Beim Tauchen sah er die Verschmutzung der Meere. Heute räumt er als «Trash Hero» diesen Müll auf. Mit Herz und einem Lächeln. «In Thailand war es so schön, dass ich länger blieb!», erinnert sich Roman Peter. Auf einer kleinen Insel tauchte er tagsüber im Meer und arbeitete abends als Musiker in einer Band. Und weil er dem Ort etwas zurückgeben wollte, machte er sich mit seinen ein heimischen Freunden daran, die Strände vom an geschwemmten Zivilisationsmüll zu säubern. «Es waren alle so happy dabei!» Die Idee der Trash Heroes war geboren. «Wir räu men so lange auf, bis die ganze Welt sau ber ist!», sagte Peter damals aus Spass. Heute bewegt es den Innerschweizer sichtlich, dass nach gut vier Jahren welt weit 42 Gruppen in 9 Ländern jede Woche «Clean-ups» organisieren. Aus der Idee wurde eine Freiwilli genbewegung, die immer motivierend agiert. Statt Vermüllung zeigen sie die positive Veränderung. Rund 46 000 Menschen aus bis zu 20 Nationen haben bis heute mit ihnen aufgeräumt. «Unser Antrieb sind Glück, Freude und Hoff nung!» Dafür lebte der Informatiker drei Jahre ohne Salär, aber mit immer währender Motivation. «Wenn aus et was Freudlosem etwas Freudiges ent Roman Peter, 34 steht, gibt es Hoffnung. Eine Kraft, die trashhero.org uns antreibt.» facebook.com/trashheroworld Derzeit schwimmen 150 Millionen Tonnen Plastik im Meer, 333 Tonnen da von haben die Trash Heroes bis heute gesammelt und recycelt. «Manchmal sind es Menschen, die daheim Krieg miteinander führen. Sobald sie aber gemein sam am Strand Ordnung schaffen, sind sie in einer Mission als Helden vereint.» Das Aufräumen ist damit auch ein Friedensprojekt. Und eine Herzens angelegenheit. «Unsere Herzen sind alle aus demsel ben Material.» Roman Peter schmunzelt. «Und sie sind sicher nicht aus Plastik!»

Roman Peter was amazed, while diving, to find how polluted the sea had become. Today this “Trash Hero” helps clean the waters up. “Thailand was so wonderful that I decided to stay,” Roman Peter recalls. He lived on a small island, diving by day and earning his keep in the evenings playing in a band. He loved the place so much that he wanted to give something back. So he teamed up with locals he’d befriended to clean the beaches of man-made garbage. “Everyone loved it!” he says. The Trash Hero was born. “Let’s clean the whole world up!” this native of central Switzerland joked at the time. And he’s vis ibly moved that, four years later, there are 42 groups in 9 countries conducting weekly clean-ups of this kind. Roman’s original idea has blossomed into a highly motivated (and motivating) volunteer movement that has already involved some 46,000 people from up to 20 nations. “Happiness, enjoyment and hope,” Roman says. “That’s what makes us do it!” It was enough to keep him going for three years without his usual salary as an IT specialist. “Turning the joyless into joy will always give you hope,” he explains. “And that’s the fuel we run on.” There are currently some 150 million tonnes of plastic floating in the world’s oceans. And 333 tonnes of it have been collected and recycled by the Trash Heroes to date. “Some of our people are even at war with each other back in their homelands,” Roman notes. “But as soon as they start cleaning up the beaches together, they’re united in their new heroic mission.” So the project is a peacemaker, too. And a passion. “All our hearts are made of the same stuff,” Roman observes. “And it definitely isn’t plastic!”
