“Time flies. It’s up to you to be the navigator.”

A: Khloe。

A:有啊。

1/F Bryan Siu 2/F Marcus 8/F Forest

All:識。

New Restaurants in HKU

Pan Asian strEAT Food

Pan Asian strEAT Food restaurant is located beside Run Run Shaw Tower and is a newly built on-campus canteen that serves Singaporean, Malaysian and Thai cuisine. The dishes served include dinner specialties and afternoon tea; special Southeast Asian flavours are available here. By ordering anything from the main menus, rice plates, or noodles, you can add a drink at a discounted price of 10 HKD. The indoors are quite large and very clean as it is newly built. The restaurant uses a self service system. When you order your food, you are given a vibrating coaster so that you can collect the food at the counter once it’s served. Also, after finishing the food, you must not forget to clean your surroundings before you leave. If you prefer to sit outdoors, there are also tables outside the restaurant where you can enjoy the fresh air while you indulge in your food.

OBC Grill

46

Another restaurant that recently opened at HKU is OBC (Original Burger Company) Grill, located right at the entrance of Lower Ground Street, Central Podium. As the brand name indicates, the restaurant specializes in burgers with freshly grilled patties, along with other menus such as fries, pasta, and salads. On weekdays, the cafeteria opens from 7:30 am to 10:00 pm and on weekends from 8:00 am to 9:30 pm. The canteen also serves a special breakfast menu from opening hour until 11:00 am, which includes omelets and scrambled eggs with roasted tomato, hash brown and baked beans. In and out, this canteen is simple yet modern, giving its customers a very diner-like feel. Although the menus provided are quite expensive, compared to those in other on-campus restaurants, the quality of food is also deemed to be higher, thus matching its price range.

Running in Hong Kong The pursuit of happiness is an elusive endeavour but science has been shedding light on some ways to guarantee that you feel better, at least for the short term. One of these is running- a sure-fire way to release some of the much needed feel-good hormones (which you really need with all the deadlines pulling you down). There are as many reasons people run for, as there are people running. Some do it for fitness, some do it as part of an overall training routine, some do it to lose weight and some do it because they are addicted to the runners high (a feeling of elation and euphoria similar to a drug-induced high). I personally started running a couple of years ago, mostly as a way to regulate my fitness and monitor it- namely what distance can I run in what time. Running in Hong Kong has been a very fulfilling experience, with very little barriers to running and the presence of numerous routes. Admittedly, with the hilly terrain, it is not the most conducive to 47

people not used to running up slopes (myself included), but there are plenty of options for flat surface running as well. If you want to run a trail, there are trails all around Hong Kong and if you like the pavement, there is absolutely no shortage of that either. Importantly, if you prefer a view with your run, Hong Kong is a great city to run in, with roads and trails overlooking some of the most beautiful views, distracting you for a moment from the agony your body might be in. In addition, the transport system is great, so if you want to go run in the remote parts of New Territories or want to try out a cool route you spotted on the internet, you can always get there easily and back, with time to continue the rest of the day undisturbed. It really is hard to make excuses to run in Hong Kong and there’s no way to justify skipping that morning run that you have been promising to go on. As a student at HKU, especially living in one of the residential halls, running is very accessible, given our proximity to some great running routes around Hong Kong island as well as Flora Ho and Stanley Ho Sports centre with their treadmills. Do keep in mind that the treadmills can be busy during the busier times and so you need to be strategic about your schedule. 48

Among the myriad of available running routes, my personal favourite is running along Victoria Road. It is a moderate stretch of around 3.5-4 km depending on where you start and end and has a breathtaking view of the sea. Quite conveniently, if you are tired and do not want to run back to the start you can grab breakfast in Kennedy Town and take a bus back home (as I almost always do).

Another route I like is the Bowen Road Fitness Trail, located on a slope above Wan Chai and Happy Valley, which starts from Magazine Gap Road and ends at the junction with Stubbs Road. Getting there takes a bit of effort given its elevation but the path itself is relatively flat and provides a breathtaking view of the racecourse, the skyscrapers and the rest of Hong Kong Island. Just beware of the many dogs out and about and make sure you do not bump into them.

I admit that I am by no means the most experienced runner and have to look things up on the internet rather constantly. The internet is a great place to learn about running, read about other people’s inspiring stories and improve your own running. I appreciate the advice on websites like https:// www.runnersworld.com and other blogs by the veterans of the sport. I would recommend people look into them and other such resources to learn more about running and how to start out. Some of the more Hong Kong-centric running websites include: https://www.hkrunners.com http://www.hkrunning.com/

You can join one of the many running groups that train together, all around Hong Kong, which you can find online and use running as a great way to meet new people and make friends. Hopefully, this will encourage you to try running out, be it for a light morning run to wake yourself up, or maybe to embark on a personal fitness journey leading to much more. Whatever your goals and motivations are, running welcomes people from all walks of life and of all levels of fitness. Finally, remember that it is not about counting the miles but making the miles count.

How to take good photos? It’s important to take nice photos when on vacation or visiting new places because photos are vehicles of collecting memory; photos can help one recall the jubilant memories of the past and thus it’s always good to have quality photos in your album to look at and reminisce happy moments from time to time. However, you may face some difficulties when taking photos of yourself or for other people upon their request. So here are some tips on how to take good, aesthetically pleasing photos to step up your gallery—or Instagram—game.

Tip1

If you want to frame a photo so as both the person and the background is shown, place the camera at an angle that puts the person at either the left or right end of the grid as shown in the image above. This provides you with adequate spatial ground to highlight the backdrop as well as give the photo a balanced structure with the person in-frame. This tip can be useful when taking photos at exhibitions, cafés or basically anywhere with a pretty interior.

52

Tip2

If you want to take a picture where the focus is mainly on the model, then try this trick! Position the model in the center of the frame and, as the photographer, make sure the model’s body is positioned right in the middle. Close-up shots work better in this case, so if you’re going for that aesthetic look, crop the body at the torso. It’s also easier for the model since they only need to pay attention to their facial expressions and upper body rather than try to pose from head-to-toe. Also, if the lighting is dim, don’t forget to turn on the flash on the camera!

Tip3

Everyone can look like a model with this tip! When taking photos of the whole body, make sure the bottom of the camera is aligned with where the feet of the model are, so that the length of the legs looks longer and slimmer. If you use this trick, the face can also seem smaller! An additional tip: if there are evident vertical or horizontal lines in the background, make sure to frame your photo so that the grid is parallel with those lines. 53

Tip4

IMPORTANT: Please turn on the gridline mode on your camera!! The most important elements in the scene should be placed along the gridlines or at the intersections where the lines meet. For a more naturally balanced composition, it’s best to place the horizon on or near one of the horizontal thirds lines!

GOING STRAa W-FREE After the launching of the “UNIfy: Skip the Straw” campaign in March 2018, the eight publicly-funded universities in Hong Kong has made a commitment to reduce the use of disposable plastic straws on campus. When some of us are already used to being straw-free, some are still reluctant to the establishment of these campaigns. So, why do we need to go straw-free? And what are the different views towards this issue?

Why no straw?

It was estimated that the world’s oceans are polluted by 8.3 billion plastic straws, greatly affecting marine life. A plastic straw would take 400-500 years to be completely broken down, and toxins and chemicals from the breakdown of straws would accumulate along the food chain. Years ago, a video showing a sea turtle with a straw stuck in its nostril triggered a wave of plastic straw bans in various countries. With environmental protection becoming increasingly important, environmental groups in Hong Kong also joined the trend of no straw. 55

Supporting views: 1. A chance to raise the awareness of the public towards plastic waste reduction 2. Easy replacement of plastic straws with reusable straws like stainless steel straws and glass straws 3. The pollution problem caused by plastic waste will eventually harm human, as micro-plastic from degradation of plastic waste would be passed along the food chain 4. Restaurants can benefit by reducing the costs on purchasing straws

Opposing views: 1. Restaurants that do not provide straws cannot cater the needs of elderly, children, and patients with swallowing difficulties 2. Disposable straws only comprise 0.025% of the total plastic waste disposed in oceans, reducing plastic straws does not contribute much to the waste problem 3. Even when the use of plastic straws is reduced and replaced, the use of paper straws still contributes to the waste problem 4. Inconvenience caused while drinking beverages like slush or milkshake without a straw 56

In Hong Kong, debates sparked off in the society after fast food restaurants like KFC and McDonald’s stopped providing plastic straws. Thinking of how an easy action of finishing a beverage can cause long-term harm to our environment, is it really that difficult to ditch plastic straws? It is actually quite simple to bring your own straw and say “no straw please” when you make an order. Whether it is possible to promote straw-free in Hong Kong depends on how willing the public is to bear with little inconvenience for a better future. Therefore, think more about the environment and start taking action today.

Space Invaders project?

When was the last time you stopped staring at your phone, and took a moment to observe the little details surrounding us instead? Ever noticed these colorful pixelated street arts on the walls, pillars and shops of Hong Kong? What are they? “Not everyone goes or can go to museums or galleries, but everybody walks or drives in the street going through their daily lives.” They are creations of a French urban artist who identifies him/herself as the Invader. Invader remained incognito so that he can visit his own exhibitions without being noticed. His idea is to decontextualize art, that is to free arts from their usual locations and to bring them to the streets. He started the Space Invaders project in the 1990s and began making mosaics in Paris, and soon all around the world. Up till today, there are 3728 pieces in 77 different cities. How does each invasion work? Little by little, Invader organised a detailed process by which he explore international densely populated urban areas and “invade” them. He stays in each new city for 2-3 weeks to scout for suitable locations for his art pieces, then uses a week to install them. He likes to call each batch of deployment an invasion wave. 64

Situation in HK? Invader visited HK for 7 times, and installed 132 invaders. The handling of his art pieces is quite a controversial topic here. Some Hongkongers may think that they are a superb artistic addition to the city. Seeing such interesting pieces on the streets do put a smile on our faces after all. However, to the government, public safety is their major concern. “To ensure safety of road users,” a number of pieces were removed quickly after they were installed. Some think it is disappointing to see the government spend billions on cultural projects such as the West Kowloon Cultural District, yet fail to recognize the value of these little pieces. The most interesting places invaded/interesting facts? We probably won’t be able to see all the invaders with our own eyes. The highest invader is in space. It is installed in the ISS (International Space Station) since 2015. The lowest ones are located well below sea level in the Cancun Bay in Mexico. Only experienced scuba divers can see them. Want to find out more about the project? 1) You can find out a lot more about the project at www.space-invaders.com 2) You can even track the current location of the ISS on the map.
