Dear Green Magpie friends, Welcome to the Winter edition of the magazine for creative young minds!

‘Bring it on Brum!’ is a programme that’s helping Birmingham’s children, young people and their families have active, fun-filled and healthy school holidays. Part of the government’s new nationwide Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme, ‘Bring it on Brum!’ is the biggest scheme of its kind in the country, and Birmingham City Council and their partners are really excited to bring it to YOU! The Winter HAF Activity Pack is filled with arts and crafts, cooking ideas and lots of sports and games to ensure a ‘fun-filled and creative time’ for young people that cannot access face-to-face provision over the winter school holidays. In partnership with Birmingham PlayCare Network the contents of this magazine and pack has been created with their philosophy at the core… championing the child’s right to play!

This magazine will provide you and your child with guidance on how to complete various activities/crafts and provide ideas and games to make use of the sports equipment included.

Please enjoy having a go at some of the activities included but REMEMBER small children will need to be supervised and older children might need a little bit of help.

So, this Winter, why not give play a go, try not to worry about what the end product will look like, remember it’s the process children go through that is the most important part of play.

We have also created an online portal packed with free ideas and resources to keep the whole family busy, with indoor and outdoor games, quizzes, dance, nature trails, park activities, food videos and so much more. We believe that everyone deserves a good break and that school holidays are better when there’s a great choice of things to do.

‘I enjoy gymnastics, playing the guitar, tumbling, trampolining, making art and eating dried mango. For this piece I was inspired by the artwork of Alfons Mucha.’

Jerome the Gnome

You will need: •

2 odd socks or old woolly tights

•

Rice

•

Stuffing or scrunched paper

• •

Fur fabric Elastic bands

1: Pop a small amount of uncooked rice into one of your socks – so your gnome will sit up. (If you are using old tights or tube stockinette – close one end with elastic & turn it inside out, before adding the rice if you need to.)

Fill the rest with stuffing from an old pillow, or use some scrunched up paper or old socks. Secure with an elastic band.

2: Where the heel of the sock comes out, pop another elastic band on to form a nose.

SCAN ME

3: Cut a keyhole shape into a piece of fur fabric. Slot it around the nose & secure with an elastic band near the top.

4: Take the second sock & roll it over to make the brim of the hat. Pop another elastic band on the tip.

5: Put Jerome’s hat on & he’s ready to party!

Fabric Tree Ornament & Christmas Wish Angel This is a lovely craft to use up any scraps of fabric you might have.

SCAN ME

1: Cut lots of strips of fabric. We used slightly stiffer fabric so that it holds its shape.

2: Tie the fabric strips onto a stick. Tie the first strip left over right, then the next one right over left. Repeat. This will stop your tree becoming lop sided!

3: Bunch up the strips tightly together.

4: Use scissors to snip the fabric strips into a tree shape.

5: Tie a piece of ribbon (or use elastic bands) onto the top of your tree to hang.

You could fray your fabric to make a fluffy tree! Or add different coloured ribbons too. Make different sizes of trees with smaller, thinner strips of fabric. Tie tightly & bunch well together to keep the shape of your tree.

Christmas Wish Angel Ornament SCAN ME

1: Fold some card in half. Draw an angel outline as shown, leaving the head joined along the fold. Cut out. Open out & write your secret Christmas wish.

2: Thread a piece of wool or ribbon through to hang.

3: Fold your card back over. Decorate the card if you’d like to.

4: Cut long thin strips of fabric (silky and floaty fabrics work best). Place them over your card as shown – either side of the head. Use another strip of fabric to tie around the waist.

5: Hang up & enjoy! Hope your wish comes true

Start with feet outside the elastic. Jump inside and outside the elastic four times.

Age 4+

Do another BUNNY JUMP.

How many can play?

This game requires 3 people

Do a TWISTER

What you will need: All you need are elastics.

Land on OUTS, feet outside the elastic

Put your feet under the elastic on one side.

Turn and do a PINGER by jumping out of the elastic.

Jump to OUTS.

Move one foot across into a DIAMOND. Do another TWISTER.

Jump out to one side.

Do a BUNNY JUMP across the other side of the elastic.

Jump out, turning as you jump and land inside the elastic.

Santa / Elf Jar 1: Clean out an empty jar, can or container.

2: Measure around the outside with some red or green material & cut to size. Stick it in place with double-sided tape or glue.

SCAN ME

3: Draw a buckle shape onto some gold card.

Cut it out, leaving a bar in the middle.

Thread some black foam strip or ribbon through the buckle and secure onto the jar / tin at the back.

4: If you would like, decorate with buttons, ribbon or anything else you can find to jazz it up!

Use your decorated jar to hold pencils, flowers, or to keep your bits & bobs tidy!

Buckle shape

Silhouette Light 1: Take a plastic cup & turn it upside down.

2: Pop a tiny bit of paint onto a sponge and dab onto the cup (Use paint sparingly so you can still see through a little) 3: While that dries, cut out your silhouette scene from some thin black sticky foam, or black paper / card.

4: Stick your silhouettes onto the cup.

5: Pop some fairy lights inside to light up your snowy scene!

Paper Butterflies You will need: • • • • •

Patterned paper / magazine pages Sticky foam pad Cassette tape Elastic bands A stick

SCAN ME 1: Cut a square & a circle of magazine or patterned paper.

(Make circle slightly smaller than square) 2: Fold both pieces of paper like a concertina as shown in the pictures.

3: Pinch in the middle as shown. Secure both together with an elastic band.

4: Open out and shape into a beautiful butterfly.

5: Find an interesting stick / twig & poke it into the sticky foam pad (sticky facing upwards) 6: Pull the tape from the cassette & decorate the base.

7: Secure your butterflies onto the twig using the elastic bands or glue.

Phone Stand 1: You will need: • Tape Cassette case • Photos or pictures from a magazine • Screen protector (optional)

2: Make sure your cassette case is clean and dry.

3: Open out the cassette case & measure the window inside the case – where the cassette would normally sit. If there is already a paper insert here, then use that as a guide.

4: Take your screen protector & peel back the protective film No. 1. Using your paper template as a guide, cut out pictures or use photos and place them face down onto the screen protector to decorate.

5: Peel back film No. 2.

SCAN ME

6: Cut your design to size to fit using your template.

7: Slide your finished design into the cassette case – where the tape would normally go.

8: Use a little Sellotape on the top edge to hold your design in place if it needs it.

9: Open out the case completely so it becomes a phone stand!

You could also glue on your photos directly to the case instead of using a screen protector.

This game requires 3 people

What you will need: All you need is a skipping rope

Two Players hold the ends of the rope and turn.

One player skips in the middle.

Everyone chants: “Jelly on the plate, Jelly on the plate, Wibble wobble, wibble wobble MIDDLE PLAYER WRIGGLES Jelly on the plate.”

Two Players hold the ends of the rope and turn.

One player skips in the middle.

Everyone chants: “Sausage in the pan, sausage in the pan, turn it over, turn it over MIDDLE PLAYER TURNS AROUND WHILE SKIPPING Sausage in the pan.”

Two Players hold the ends of the rope and turn.

One player skips in the middle.

Everyone chants: “Baby on the floor, baby on the floor, pick it up, Pick it up MIDDLE PLAYER TOUCHES GROUND X2 Baby on the floor.”

Two Players hold the ends of the rope and turn.

One player skips in the middle.

Everyone chants: “Burglar in the house, burglar in the house, kick him out, kick him out MIDDLE PLAYER KICKS AIR WHILE SKIPPING Burglar in the house”

Paper Decorations 1: You will need: • •

Wallpaper samples / patterned paper Beads (optional), string, glue

SCAN ME 1: Draw lots of circles onto wallpaper scraps using something round like a jar lid or a cup.

2: Cut your circles out & fold in half (with the pattern inside) 3: Glue one half of one circle.

Stick it to a different half of another circle.

5: Before you glue your last halves together, pass a cord along the middle – then glue together to trap the cord for hanging. Perhaps add beads to dangle.

4: Glue another half circle to that one & so on until you have built up as many as you want.

Why not make half paper baubles in the same way & stick them on to a gift box to decorate it? We used a shoe box.

You could cut strips of wallpaper scraps, then glue or staple together to make paperchain decorations to match!

Gingerbread Tag / Card Have you baked some Gingerbread People to give as a gift to a friend?

Why not decorate your foamboard Gingerbread Person & use it as a lovely tag / card to brighten their day J
