Welcome to the Summer edition of the magazine for creative young minds! ‘Bring it on Brum!’ is a programme that is helping Birmingham’s children, young people and their families have active, fun-filled and healthy school holidays. Part of the government’s new nationwide Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme, ‘Bring it on Brum!’ is the biggest scheme of its kind in the country, and Birmingham City Council and their delivery partner, StreetGames, are really excited to bring it to YOU! The Summer HAF Activity Pack is filled with arts and crafts, cooking ideas and lots of sports and games to ensure a ‘fun-filled and creative time’ for young people that cannot access face-to-face provision over the Summer school holidays. In partnership with Birmingham PlayCare Network the contents of this magazine and pack has been created with their philosophy at the core… championing the child’s right to play! This magazine will provide you and your child with guidance on how to complete various activities/crafts and provide ideas and games to get creative and make use of the equipment included. Please enjoy having a go at some of the activities included but REMEMBER small children will need to be supervised and older children might need a little bit of help. So, this Summer, why not give play a go, try not to worry about what the end product will look like, remember it’s the process children go through that is the most important part of play. We have also created an online portal packed with free ideas and resources to keep the whole family busy, with indoor and outdoor games, quizzes, dance, nature trails, park activities, food videos and so much more. We believe that everyone deserves a good break and that school holidays are better when there’s a great choice of things to do. Step by step: Summer Planter
5 cm
Step 1: Cut 3 toilet roll tubes in half. Snip 4 evenly spaced slots into each as shown. Fold in the flaps, overlapping them to form the base of pots.

Step 2: Place your mini planters into your egg box. Fill them with soil. Plant some seeds from vegetables you’ve used in the kitchen.
Step 4: Tie string to sticks. Cut 2 small slots in either end of the egg box and poke sticks into them to secure your bunting in place.
Recycle scraps of wool and cardboard
Step by step: Yarn Dolly Step 1: Use a piece of cardboard packaging approximately 24 cm long. Fold in half (12cm) Wrap wool around until you have enough for your body.
Step 2: Pass another piece of wool between card and wrapped wool, and tie tightly. Cut wool at the bottom between the card, as shown.

Step by step: Flapping Butterfly Stick the middle of the butterfly to your peg.
Cut out the butterfly templates and colour in the wings.
Stick the middle of the strip to the bottom of peg. Stick each side of strip to butterfly wings as shown (with wings partially closed). Squeeze your peg to make your butterfly flap!

Step by step: Cute Commonwealth Caterpillar Recycle some scraps of wool and a plastic or wooden fork or spoon Gather some pieces of scrap wool – Can you match them to one of the flags of the Commonwealth countries? Wrap scraps of wool around your fork and tie them, leaving extra for legs! Cut out some googly eyes from the templates in this book, or make your own, and glue them on.
The Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing butterfly lives only in the forests of Papua New Guinea. This is their Flag.

Colour wheel – flower finding
Cut out the template in the middle of your booklet and collect as many flowers or leaves that match each colour on the chart. Ask permission to pick flowers.
Draw a picture of a vase on a piece of card. Colour it in or use torn up pieces of an old magazine and stick them on to make a pattern.
Cut holes in the top and pop your flowers in to make a flower posy picture!
Leave some stalk on the flowers for the next step!

1: Collect some flowers. 2: Place flowers face down on a piece of paper. Place another piece of paper on the top and rub hard with the back of a metal spoon. Lift paper and see what’s happened! Lift off any bits you don’t want. You might want to leave the coloured petals on your picture.

Challenge yourself: Bird Feeder From this…. to this……
Step 1: Wrap a piece of card or stiff paper around a cardboard tube twice. Mark and cut.
Step 2: Cut card in 2 pieces. Place around tube and glue or staple together. Cut a pattern into sides if you’d like to.
Step 3: Make your own flowers and garden critters using scrap card and paper. Glue them onto a stick and pop them in your vase
Recycle a glass jar and scraps of wool or string and a stick Wrap wool or string securely around your jar, trapping a stick as you do, so that the birds have something to land on. Tie on more wool to hang it. Add bird seed and hang it on a tree outside. How many different birds do you see?

Collect paper, card, ribbons and shiny things!
Cut slits along folded edge as shown.

GAME: Animal Antics Balancing Flamingo: Can you stand on one leg for a whole minute like a Flamingo? Did you find it easy? Try closing your eyes!
Starfish jumps: Jump up and down, spreading your arms and legs wide in the air. How many can you do in 2 minutes?
Duck Waddle: Waddle like a duck around the room 3 times! Can you make a duck noise too, and shake your tail?
Frog Squats: Squat with your knees apart. Touch your hands to the ground between your knees. Count to 4 and then leap up like a frog!
Slithering Snake: Slither around the room like a snake. What noise does a snake make?
Elephant Stomps: Stomp around like an elephant. Use your arm as your trunk. Elephants use their trunks to pick things up. What can you find to pick up like an elephant?
