Haydon Wick by-election held following the death of Conservative ward councillor Rex Barnett. He increased the winning margin in the ward receiving 1,376 votes, with Labour’s Maura Clarke gaining 887. UKIP candidate Ed Gerrard took 426 votes while Liberal Democrat Sean Davey picked up 83. The turnout was 30.17 per cent. Toothill stalwart passes away About 150 people paid their respects at the funeral of Denis Mackie, 62, on 13 August. Denis, right, who died suddenly on 1 August, was a major figure in the Toothill community - volunteer chairman of the junior youth club, one of the first involved in the Toothill lottery million pound project, and a supporter of the community cafe founded by his wife Tina, as well as her night time carer. They moved to the area with their young children in 1978, two years after building in West Swindon started. Tina said she and James and Louise were totally devastated by their loss. At his funeral Rev Anne Carter said Denis was one of those people who saw the good in other people and wanted them to understand what they could achieve. Denis trained as an architectural welder. His work can be seen over the entrance canopy at Watt Tyler House on Princes Street in the town centre, at Madam Tussards and the Royal Mint.
After early retirement he dedicated himself to the young people of Toothill and in the late 1990s campaigned for Toothill Farmhouse to become a permanent base for the junior youth club. Club coordinator Caroline Bosley said Denis’ will be missed greatly by staff, volunteers and the children. “He did so much to keep the club going; it was his passion and the kids loved him for it. “We’re planning a party to bring everybody together at halloween to remember Denis by.” Caroline added the club is also looking for more volunteer help. Lydiard Fields again in the balance
The fate of the last field between Grange Park and Lydiard Park will be considered at a planning appeal hearing on 3 September. Swindon Council planning committee rejected an application to build on the site off Hook Street in 2011, and it was later blocked at a planning appeal in 2012. However the planning inspector gave enough scope for a revised proposal which could not be seen from the park. Swindon rejected a second application for 73 houses by Persimmon Homes in March and the appeal will hear objections from Lydiard Fields Action Group and the Friends of Lydiard Park, as well as the developer’s justifications .

Greater pressure could be imposed on North Swindon after planning consultants DPDS revealed proposals for up to 350 houses at Abbey Farm, Blunsdon. This is to the north of Lady Lane and St Andrews Ridge, between the A419 and the agreed site for 1,700 houses at Tadpole Farm. It includes 17 acres of open space and one shop. Les Durrant, managing director of DPDS said: “Abbey Farm is being brought forward as a small scale residential neighbourhood of outstanding quality. “We’re conscious that our proposals must be sensitive to neighbouring communities. Our draft scheme has been subject to extensive engineering and environmental investigations and we have given a great deal of care to ensure it maintains and enhances the high quality character of nearby areas.” However the lack of a school within the plan has caused worry as children will have to walk or be driven to primary schools across North Swindon, the nearest being at Abbey Meads, Bridlewood or the yet to be built Tadpole Farm. Crest Nicholson South West showed off the layout for the first 120 houses proposed for the 1,695 home development at Tadpole Farm at North Swindon Library on 22 July, following discussions with councillors and community groups about the design codes to be followed when detailed planning applications are submitted. The 143 hectare site also includes 5ha of employment land, a local centre, primary school, public open space including a common, cricket pitch and three access roads. The plans are designed around the idea of a ‘garden village’ where housing is framed by green spaces which will cover over 60 per cent of the site. Crest showed tree lined avenues and generous parking for each house across the site. One of the first aspects of the build will be to insert access points to the housing area on Tadpole Lane which will reduce vehicle speed. North Swindon secondary school crisis will hit children now in Year 5 Parents expecting a place at a school of their choice close to their homes will soon be in for a shock because 1 in 3 families will have to send their children outside North Swindon. The stark situation was spelt out at Isambard Community School on 15 August by a group that wants to make a bid for central government funding to set up a entirely new free school providing 240 places a year. It would be an independent school with its own headteacher, management team and governing body but
operate within a federation with Isambard so it can share resources and skills. There is very little time to avert the crisis which by September 2016 will see 237 children attending schools outside North Swindon, compared with only 31 in 2012. The free school group is proposing to assemble and submit a bid in mid2014 with a view to a school opening in September 2015. For the bid to be successful, at least 360 parents will have to sign a form
stating they will send their child to the new school. However there is no obligation for them to do so. The most viable development sites in North Swindon are at St Andrew’s Ridge close to Abbey Stadium or the proposed housing area at Abbey Farm, off Tadpole Lane. They are close to where places are needed and away from other secondary schools. Isambard parent Kevin Gray said: “Many parents of younger children don’t realise this is a problem when in fact they might not have a choice

North Swindon bus alterations Thamesdown Transport passengers in North Swindon will see changes to some of their bus services from 2 September. Service 15a, covering Haydon Wick, Redhouse, Oakhurst and Taw Hill, is to be renumbered 15 and extended beyond the town centre to Old Town and East Wichel. It will run every 20 minutes, Mondays to Fridays, and every 30 minutes on Saturdays. Service 12 will start at St Andrews Ridge and run into town every 30 minutes via Abbey Meads, Haydon Wick, Haydon End and Akers Way, replacing Service 15. It will then carry on as now via Old Town to the Great Western Hospital. The new service 24 will connect Blunsdon and the town centre via Cricklade Road and Tesco Extra on Ocotal Way. This will be an hourly service and provide a quicker travel time. Service 11 between Haydon Wick and East Wichel will run every 15 minutes, terminating at the bus station. Passengers travelling to the south of the town centre will need to change to services 12 or 15 from Fleming Way. Youngsters had to pull water in a bucket to the first floor then carry it to the other end of the school where it was used for washing up to demonstrate the difficulty of accessing water in poorer countries. There were workshops to make shadow puppets, martial arts, African singing, a Turkish cookery class, Kabadi sports from Pakistan and dancing from Nicaragua. In Maths students used real world data to compare incomes and the cost of living between the industrialised world and less well off countries. They also discussed what the United Nations convention on the rights of the child means around the world, the impact of unfair trade practice and child exploitation in producing
clothing for High Street chains. The academy, which has a long history of links with South Africa and more recently The Gambia, has been involved over the years with campaigns to provide education to every child on the planet. South Swindon MP Robert Buckland, who has been lobbied by students in the past, said he continues to be impressed by the academy’s commitment to global understanding. “It is essential that we are all aware of human rights and trade issues. The young people will be moving onto higher education and work in just a few years and Lydiard Park Academy is equipping them to understand the issues that affect us all in an interconnected world.”

Not only have the contractors built the flood defences throughout Haydon Wick on behalf of Thames Water to prevent houses being flooded when there is heavy rain, they also donated £250 to the school which has been used to purchase board games for use during playtimes when it rains. Site quantity surveyor Philip Player said: “The team won the health and safety award for the quarter out of all Galliford Try sites. We decided to pass on the bonus for the disruption the work has caused to the community.” The £2.4 million construction work is due for completion in September. Haydon Brook has been re-profiled in some places and three bridges have been rebuilt. Mum raises money to buy a cold cot for GWH Vicky Pullen, a mother who went through the tragedy of a still-birth, has raised over £5,000 to purchase a refrigerated cold cot for the maternity unit at Great Western Hospital. Cold cots delay the physical deterioration of still-born babies so that grieving parents have longer to say goodbye. Caring teacher retires Parents and former pupils, some who are now parents of children at Oliver Tomkins Primary School, Toothill attended a party on 23 July to say farewell to long serving teacher Janet French.

Local history lovers – don’t forget your Swindon Heritage Learn about baby Prince George’s Lydiard Park connection The Autumn 2013 edition of Swindon Heritage will be dropping through letterboxes across town as subscribers receive their copies before the magazine goes on general sale at the end of August. The number keeps on growing which is music to the ears of editor Graham Carter who said: “The commitment of our subscribers to buying advance copies enables us to plan ahead and ensures the future of the magazine. It’s really important for our not-for-profit social enterprise.” The team is making plans for a busy year in 2014 to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. They are working with schools and hope to produce spin-off publications. Magazine executive editor Mark Sutton said: “We’ve already delivered presentations and exhibitions to Goddard Park Community Primary School and St Joseph’s Catholic College about local men who fought in the war. “We’re hoping to find the funding to produce a special Great War edition.” But what can subscribers expect to find in the third edition of Swindon Heritage? The cover story is the continuing tale of William Blake, a Swindon man whose wartime service saw him at the forefront of a military innovation. Prolific local historian Mark Child has published three books this year, and his latest offering is another must for students of the town’s heritage, and anybody else keen on snippets of information, writes Frances Bevan. The Swindon Book is a veritable encyclopaedia, a fascinating conucopia of references. Written in easily digestible segments, The Swindon Book has been many years in the making. Her afternoon course, 1.30pm to 3.30pm, focuses on making beautiful mosaics by using small cut-out paper shapes to create images. Last Night of the Proms Swindon town centre are proud to announce that the Big Screen at Wharf Green will be broadcasting yet another Last Night of the Proms LIVE for the sixth consecutive year! Tickets to the Royal Opera House are naturally very expensive; yet you can witness the outstanding performances from the comfort of your very own town centre; which has proven to be a great hit in previous years due to the excellent turnout and fantastic atmosphere from preceding showings! Last year we housed an excellent crowd, yet could this year’s festivities top that of 2012? About us - What is inSwindon BID?
The UK’s National Fitness Day is happening on Friday 27th September this year! Whether you want to tone up, become more energetic or simply try something different; this day could be the kick start to a new you!
inSwindon BID is a Business Improvement District, set up in 2007, which promotes, manages and co-ordinates operations and events in the town centre.
The day encompasses an ‘empower half hour’ at 1pm- which involves partaking in 30 minutes of physical activity from taking a walk, jog, run or bounce on your lunch break to playing sports in the playground or wherever you may be.
It is mainly funded by the retailers and other businesses within the town centre area. In February 2012 the Company was successful in a renewal to secure the future of the company for a further five-years at a vote taken by the Business Improvement District investors.
You won’t be alone! There will be people across the nation taking part in the ‘empower

Jack and the Green Stalk This summer staff from Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre have been supporting The Wilts and Berks Canal Trust in re-opening the canal route and providing wildlife habitats, cycle ways and routes for walkers along the restored towpath. Jack and the Beanstalk tells the story of a boy who plants a magic bean which grows into a beanstalk, enabling him to save his community from a terrifying Giant. The story of this year’s pantomime encouraged the Wyvern to consider how the theatre’s staff could have a positive effect on both the environment and our local community. “Swindon’s number one entertainment venue will see a beanstalk grow on stage more than fifty times throughout the festive season,” said Theatre Director Derek Aldridge. “Like the magic bean in this year’s panto, we hope that our seed of support will sprout and, from it, the trust will harvest many new local businesses and individuals who wish to show their support by volunteering their time.”
Swindon is mid-point of the waterway which linked the Thames at Abingdon with the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham. A variety of members of staff have given up three working days, over a three month period, to step away from the glitz and glamour of theatre and step into the historic canal. “It has been really interesting,” said Ticket Office Assistant Julie Ireland. “It’s really engendered a team spirit, we’ve found a lot of humour in it and it has been so refreshing to be outdoors!” For more information about Wilts and Berkshire Canal Trust, visit wbct. org.uk Jack and the Beanstalk will run at the Wyvern Theatre from Sat 7 December 2013 to Sun 5 January 2014. When Lydiard Park was a PoW camp A fascinating exhibition at Lydiard House illustrates how the events and sports pitches in the park were covered in huts and used as a hospital for up to 200 German prisoners in the latter part of World War II. Thanks to a recent loan of documents and photographs by Elaine Newcombe-Jones, the story of 160 Camp, a hidden part of West Swindon’s history, is on display until mid-November. The large hospital camp was originally established for US servicemen injured during the D-Day Landings and was adapted to hold the growing numbers of prisoners of war as Allied armies pushed towards victory. The first to move in, 91-year-old Amy Jones, still lives there. She said: “I moved from Lechlade to be closer to the church I attend in Walcot. I still go there every week, it’s my family really. “My husband Albert died, aged 92, a couple of years ago. It was terrible for me as we didn’t have children and I don’t have any close family, but other residents helped me.” The oldest resident, Michael Mycroft, 92, has been at Gainsborough Court since 2000 and lives a very independent life, even helping out at his daughter’s stables. The complex of 34 flats was opened
in July 1983 by Rev Derryck Evans, chair of Thamesdown Housing Association and is now owned by Sanctuary Housing Association. Carolyn Davies is the first and only warden and continues to live on site. She said: “When we moved in Gainsborough Court was surrounded by fields; I had a clear view across to Lydiard Park from my flat. With 39 residents to support here, life is never dull.” Amy added: “Over all the years Carolyn has been a wonderful warden. We couldn’t have had a better person looking after us.”

Chapter and now verse for literature fans The organisers of this year’s Swindon Festival of Literature and last October’s fabulous first Festival of Poetry have announced a second offering of verse – complete with a big name. The Swindon Festival of Poetry will run from 3 to 6 October, and poets already booked to appear include Liverpool’s Poet Laureate and presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Poetry Please, Roger McGough, right. Mick the Rocket’s cycling heyday
Eighty-year-old Mick Fisher from Rodbourne has fond memories of the sport of cycle speedway which gripped the town after World War II – and even has a county champion’s trophy to show for it. “Cycle speedway started in London after the war, racing around the bombsites,” said Mick, a rider for the Rodbourne Rockets. “We built a track in 1948 at the bottom of Morris Street, where Mannington Rec is now, using ash from the railway.” Rival clubs in the town included the Kingsdown Aces, Purton Panthers and Gorse Hill Foxes. He also has memories of numerous friendly matches such as one against Rodbourne’s Monkey Club, and Photo: Richard Wintle www.calyxpix.com said one of their riders was so heavy that he needed a reinforced bike. Mick said: “We raised £21 at that match, which was two weeks’ pay in those days.” Competitions were sponsored by the News Chronicle, a national paper, with a silver helmet awarded to county champions and gold to the national winner. Mick, who is pictured holding the silver helmet he won in 1950, said: “I was presented with it by Zena Marshall, the British film actress who went on to play Miss Taro in the James Bond movie, Dr No. Barrie Telling, who won it the year before me, got his from Petula Clark.” Sadly, Mick missed out on the chance to win the gold helmet. He said:“I went up to London for the national finals, but I was disqualified for breaking the tape on the starting line.” Mick’s cycle speedway career came to an end when he started National Service in 1954. Hockey students thriving on ice and at West school The first year of the partnership between Okanagan Ice Hockey Academy at Link Centre and Lydiard Park Academy - the unique educational project between a sports club and a school - has been a huge success

They quickly became young men who bonded as a team with great camaraderie, and an incredibly high work rate and pride. “With the intense hockey training every day the lads worked harder than some professional teams.” The squad covered over 20,000 miles travelling to matches and tournaments in UK, Austria, France and Belgium, playing 60 games between September and June. Despite competing against teams with a higher average age, the squad came fourth in the English Ice Hockey Association southern league. In September players who have left LPA will attend college and progress to the new Prospects Programme, training with adults and playing in the Under 18s English National League. At the same time 27 youngsters will return or join the ice hockey programme and Lydiard Park Academy. Expressing his satisfaction with the first year of the partnership, LPA
headteacher Clive Zimmerman said: “The year went remarkably smoothly. The players worked very hard to fit in; they’re all leaders with a clear vision of their future. The example they set was a major asset to the school.” Hungarian teenager Istovin Dragomir came to Lydiard Park with no English, but with extra lessons and help from his peers, he quickly became a top student, particularly in physics. “It took me about six months to feel comfortable speaking English although I could understand a lot earlier,” he said. Simon Kunin from Berlin and Daniel Stattersfield from Newcastle lived with the Llewellyn family in Lydiard Millicent. Simon had been attending an English school in Germany so the transfer was straightforward. Daniel said he had gained a great deal: “Living with another player in the academy has helped me a lot. Simon and I are both in the defence so we’ve built a very good understanding. I’m a year younger than him and he would help me with school work if I got stuck. Also, Simon is Jewish and I’ve learnt a great deal about his heritage.” Mac Howlett, 13, the youngest and smallest in the squad said: “It’s all worked out well. My school work improved a lot and I hit my targets. My ice hockey is much better; I don’t bounce off the larger players any more, and I had a strong team around me.”

The newly formed Swindon Under 10’s girls hockey team won the 2013 county competition to represent Wiltshire at a tournament at Millfield School in Somerset, eventually finishing fourth out of 16 county teams. Swindon Hockey Club offers a healthy and thriving junior hockey scene, providing high quality coaching in a safe and encouraging atmosphere, with an equal emphasis on developing new skills and having fun. Orphans to benefit from Tibet to Nepal ride With Chris Froome’s Tour de France victory fresh in the mind, Taw Hill’s own King of the Mountains Brian Mildenhall will cycle 1,011km along the Friendship Highway from Lhasa in Tibet to Kathmandu from 31 August to 23 September to raise funds for Angel’s Orphanage in Nepal.

A keen supporter of the orphanage since 2010, Brian hopes to raise enough money to provide food for the 21 children at Angel’s home for fifty days. Explaining the economics, Brian said: “It costs £1 a day to feed a child a basic breakfast and dinner of rice, lentils and curried vegetables. Every penny I raise will go to feeding the children, with no hidden admin costs.” Apart from the distance Brian will be cycling most of the time at over 4,000 metres, 17,000 feet. He will have to take on hill climbs over distances of up to 25 km, with all the
attendant breathlessness of thinner mountain air. Commenting on his training schedule Brian said: “I’ve only been cycling for enjoyment for about five years; I don’t do races and I’m not a member of a club. London 2012 – A year on
This time last year Olympics Games Maker Claire Purnell from North Swindon had just completed two weeks of an amazing journey. She was one of thousands of volunteers who ensured the games was an incredible experience for visitors and a brilliant showcase for Britain. The Swindon College student services manager wrote of her immediate reaction in the October 2012 Link. Here she takes a long look back. Reflection
A year on from the London Olympic Games and the euphoria and spirit that brought the nation to an amazing fortnight of success is still so fresh in my mind. The moments of tension, emotion and insane excitement for me as a games maker within the Olympic Park was special, I loved every minute. To have witnessed world class performances in the
aquatics centre and in the Olympic Stadium was a great joy; we showed Britain’s best face to the world and I was privileged to be part of it. Highlights for me are still so vivid - from attending the opening ceremony rehearsal, watching the GB welcoming ceremony, meeting over 50 Olympic athletes and spending time with gold, silver and bronze medallists, to running a lap of the

The great wave of Zaha Hadid’s aquatic centre roof has now been revealed. It will reopen to the public in Spring 2014, with its spectator capacity having been reduced from 17,500 to 2,500. The Olympic Stadium was recently featured in the anniversary games and will be in use for the rugby world cup in 2015 and perhaps be rebuilt for football after that. The north side of the park near the velodrome is now open and it is free to enter, with a great play area for children. We were lucky enough to be there for the official opening on 27 July. Locally our school ran a poem competition on Your Hero and my nine year old daughter wrote a poem based on her inspiring Paralympian hero Ellie Simmonds who I tweeted so that she could read it. For me, the memories and friendships will always be there and, as a competitive swimmer in my youth, I am now being badgered to get back into my cossie to start training for the Masters World Championships in 2016 to be held at the London Aquatics Centre. Last year Christian Aid West asked local churches to raise £5,000 in support of disadvantaged families in Sao Paulo’s city centre slums. The Gaspar Garcia project, backed by Christian Aid, is helping tenants use their legal rights to challenge unscrupulous landlords, and to develop recycling projects. It’s all part of the regeneration efforts ahead of the World Cup in Brazil next year. Fundraising events and special
collections have all helped to meet the total. And Christian Aid has arranged for the European Commission to match fund, bringing the total gift from the churches in the West of England up to £20,000. Bishop Lee Rayfield, Bishop of Swindon said: “In the lead up to the World Cup and Olympics in Brazil we have been hearing a lot about the difficulties faced by poor communities. It’s great to have played a part in what Christian Aid is doing to help overcome these.”

Swindon Travel Choices Swindon Travel Choices aims to make it easier for those living or working in Swindon to get around without clogging up the road network. We believe that by giving people proper travel choices, many everyday journeys can be made by bus, bike and foot rather than by car.
September is Travel Choices Month
Swindon Travel Choices runs a lot of walking and cycling events, but we’re not just about getting around on foot and two wheels. During September we’re bringing together transport roadshows that will promote innovative car transport, electric vehicles, public transport offers and our popular prize draws. Hopefully you can come and see us at the Link Centre, Wharf Green or the railway station. Western Flyer Wander Join a two-mile walk, led by a small team of local historians, artists and volunteer walk leaders, along the Western Flyer cycle and pedestrian route on Sunday 15th September, starting at 11am. The free walk organised by Create Studios and Swindon Borough Council’s Walking for Health campaign, is part of the ...marking time...along the Western Flyer participatory arts project. Led by artist Scott Farlow, the project is part of the new enhancements to the Western Flyer cycle and pedestrian route. Meet at the entrance to the Sheppard Street underpass. The walk will last approximately three hours with stops on the way to learn more about the heritage and social history of this fascinating route and to get involved in fun and imaginative activities. The Western Flyer tricycle machine will be part of the outing - a sound gathering, three wheeled contraption, on which are stored all sorts of gadgets and equipment to use and play with. It will be a surprising, entertaining event for families and people of all ages! Bring a picnic for a lunch stop en-route where there will be a chance to record your thoughts and responses to the walk using cutting edge digital media equipment on board the Createmobile, and to pick up related health, historical and environmental information.
