Connecting people, Connecting Places is Swindon Borough Council’s way of getting elected councillors closer to voters, and to give people the chance to comment and influence the way the council operates. Every council ward across the town has been grouped into one of seven clusters and, as it’s a new policy, each cluster is developing along lines that councillors and residents feel are appropriate. The meetings are open and welcome contributions from all.

From Brian Best, secretary, Gorse Hill Community Centre I was interested to read comments from Karen Leakey in the August Link and thought, how true they are, in particular the last paragraph about councillors listening to residents. I understand that Ian Bickerton is in the chair of the cluster covering our area and he has already had three meetings with our councillors. As yet the interested public have not taken part in these meetings. Could somebody please enlighten me on when we will be considered able to participate, or do we agree with Karen Leakey that we are not to be invited? Comments from ‘those on high’ would be appreciated sometime. To finish, how well organised the North Swindon Cluster seems to be (as reported in The Link). They have had one meeting already in the Tawny Owl, in July, and another one arranged for the autumn. Perhaps we haven’t got a decent pub to meet in.

Redhouse residents say no to extending North Swindon

A meeting organised by Redhouse Residents’ Association on 8 September will voice objections to proposals in Swindon Council’s Core Strategy document that the Tadpole Farm site, north of Oakhurst, is a ‘preferred’ site for the development of another 2,000 homes.

Apart from increased pressure on infrastructure, members of the association particularly object to the extra traffic that will flow through Redhouse and Oakhurst to Thamesdown Drive. The proposed link from Tadpole Lane to Addinsell Road and Eastbury Way leading to junction 6A, and Redhouse Way leading to junction 7, would have to cope with up to another 1,000 cars a day morning and evening, says chairman David Raymond. “This traffic will cause chaos in narrow residential streets already reduced to single lane access by cars parked in front of homes. “The amount of traffic queuing at

The Save Coate coalition, which collected well over 55,000 names since 2003 objecting to development of land between the country park and Great Western Hospital, were delighted with the planning inspector’s comments that the views from Coate Water Country Park toward Liddington Hill would be spoilt. The inspector also objected to the lack of links between the proposed offices and university and the fact that no site had been identified by the developers for a teaching facility in the town centre. However he was satisfied that the plans protected the ecology and archaeological sites in the area and indicated some housing develop-

ment is acceptable. In its Core Strategy plan, Swindon Council proposes 750 houses for the Commonhead site. Jean Saunders, the leading campaigner with Save Coate, welcomed the inspector’s decision but acknowledges that the campaign will be ‘hard pushed to come up with good reasons in planning terms’ to argue against development. She is beginning to think that the campaign might have to focus on ensuring there is enough land available for the hospital to grow and ensuring that the proposed buffer land around Coate Water is turned into a nature reserve and designated forever.

Junction 16 argument continues Charmian Spickernell, vice-chair of the Wiltshire Branch, Campaign to Protect Rural England comments on the August Link article, Wichelstowe challenge thrown out of court, which reported the legal bid by the CPRE to block the use of Junction 16 of the M4 as one of the main access routes to the Wichelstowe (Front Garden) development. In the course of making this challenge, CPRE Wiltshire and Mr Yates (former chair of Lydiard Tregoze Parish Council) uncovered crucial information concerning the safety of the proposed alterations to M4 Junction 16. The lane widths that are shown on the drawing are inadequate for lorries on the bends and the design with a contraflow on the south side of the Junction appears to be a departure from the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges. The junction and the part of Hay

Lane that is in Wiltshire are outside the area that was covered by the main application for the Wichelstowe development in Swindon. The judge found that these safety issues should be addressed at the next stage of the development process, the Section 278 Agreement. It could be that Wiltshire Council could ask for a planning application for M4 Junction 16 and this will trigger the need for an Environmental Impact Assessment. So the campaign is on-going for safety and sustainability.

Parents, relatives and friends are all welcome to meet cadets and staff and learn about Air Training Corps’ activities through videos, displays and one-to-one discussions. The cadets will give a display in drill, leadership and ﬁrst aid, before the presentation of annual awards. Over the past year activities have included glider training, ﬂying in the RAF’s basic trainer at RAF Boscombe Down, and helping to organise the Kemble air show in June. Easter and summer camps have been held at RAF stations around the country and cadets have taken part in sporting events, representing squadron, wing or the region in hockey, netball, football, swimming, athletics and cross country. Adventure training in the Lake

District, kayaking, canoeing, mountain walking and climbing have all been part of the programme. Seven cadets completed their bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and two at silver, whilst two undertook the RAF Cosford Nijmegen marches. Children and staff spent the last week of term packing away their classrooms so that removal teams could transfer the boxes and furniture. The single storey circular building is constructed around a large playground complete with climbing equipment and soft surfaces. Inside are classrooms and learning spaces full of light. Designed by architects Eric Cole and Partners and built by Swindon Commercial Services, the school is faced in Cotswold stone blockwork, complemented by cream coloured sofﬁts and marine green window frames and fascias. Not only is Shaw Ridge getting a whole new school, the school is adopting a new colour scheme. After 23 years with blue and red as the dominant colours, children will wear green sweat shirts to match the look and feel of the building. Headteacher Sally Cowell said the end of term was full of mixed emotions. “The old school was our home since 1983 and we were

sad to leave it. But the new one is absolutely wonderful. After all the upheavals we’ve had over the last few years, it really is a school for the 21st Century. The children are going to love it.” She added that the design and build team from the borough council and the architects had been ‘terrific’ during the building phase. Eight children were chosen to be the first to look at the new school with The Link. Georgia Anderson said it looks fabulous. Alwin Matthew was effusive. “It’s mind-blowing,” he said. The children will also be looking forward to the return of playing fields. Because of building works their playground was used for mobile buildings and the field covered with tarmac. From September the community facilities will be on offer to local organisations and in January Upper Shaw Farm Playgroup will transfer into a purpose built room with play area.

More work needed at Bridlewood

Bridlewood Primary School was inspected by Ofsted in June, when the overall effectiveness of the school was found to be ‘satisfactory.’ The inspector was particularly impressed by the strong sense of pride and belonging amongst the pupils, and the mutually respectful relationships between staff and pupils alike. The school was commended for its sensitivity and attentiveness to vulnerable and at risk pupils, and classroom management was found to be good. Neil Griffiths, full time author, inventor of Story Sacks and former headteacher at Westlea Primary School, has come up with another book children will love reading over and over again.

Neil has dedicated it to the memory of 5 year old Dylan O’Neill, who lost his life at the end of October last year, after fighting cancer for three years. They met on one of Neil’s regular trips to the Great Western Hospital to read to children and he became a close friend of his family. Three Peaks Climb for Koalas

Ash Brake resident Rob Angus and eight friends and colleagues are set to climb the Three Peaks on 19 and 20 September in aid of the Koalas Opportunity Group based at the Salt Way Centre in Middleleaze. Koalas is a playgroup for children with special needs and their siblings, and is a source of advice, guidance and respite for parents and carers. It is managed by a parent-led committee and is part-funded by grants from Swindon Council and the Primary Care Trust. Gallery impresses parents to buy their children’s work

Youngsters at Orchid Vale Primary School in Haydon End turned their school hall into an art gallery before the end of term. All 225 children were asked to draw or paint a picture, or create a collage in the style of different artists which they had been studying. Some were abstract after Kandinsky, others followed the Lowry approach after a visit to Swindon’s railway village. The images were professionally framed and parents were invited to visit the art exhibition and buy the pictures in aid of school funds. “It’s amazing what a frame does to a picture,” said headteacher Debbie Kalynka. “The children loved seeing their work set up in a gallery and were delighted to show it off to their parents.” Orchid Vale gained the Arts Council Artsmark Gold Award in 2007 and is working hard to ensure it will be retained when they are assessed next year. Three steps from North Swindon to 1904 via Swindon’s water features

1. Need to get town centre water feature right

The New Swindon Company is proposing to replace the Jubilee Clock on Canal Walk in the town centre with a water feature. But fountains expert Stuart Tanfield, below, who has overseen the refurbishment of the jumping fountains at the North Swindon District Centre, says the idea has to be thought out correctly. “It’s great when a water feature is working, but our experience at North Swindon should prepare the town centre for problems. 2. Water to return to Canal Walk Despite economic uncertainty, The New Swindon Company is pushing ahead with a £3.9 million transformation of Canal Walk in Swindon town centre. Existing paving, street furniture and advertising hoardings will be removed to make way for new high-quality stone paving, with new benches and lighting. The overall design will have a ‘ribbon’ feature set into the paving which will run the entire length of pedestrian route, with historical text about the old canal - which used to lie along the route - set into the stones. The Jubilee Clock at the junction of Canal Walk and Bridge Street will be replaced by a speciallydesigned water feature, illustrated right, while the statue of the Golden Lion will be moved to a new location closeby. Funding to pay for the work to be done over the winter comes from the South West Regional Development Agency and a further £1 million from the government’s ‘Growth Points’ fund.

Bradon’s big top festival is a wow

A year’s hard work planning a festival that involved hundreds of children from Bradon Forest School and partner primary schools in July was a huge success writes organiser Jennifer Cady.

There are just too many highlights to mention them all. The quality of performance from all the participants was just out of this world and we were so chuffed to see everyone pull out all the stops for this amazing event. The primary schools really blew us away and we’re very much looking forward to working with the young performers when they come up to Bradon in September. The festival went off without a hitch thanks to the help and support from the staff and students at Bradon Forest, but also from the public and other performers. Everyone seemed to be willing to muck in whenever and wherever needed and it really helped to contribute to the sense of community at the festival. The feedback was tremendous. Guest judge Lawrence Wakefield said, “we had a great time and were amazed by all the talent but also by the scale of the event. I can’t imagine anything like that ever happening at the school I went to. You guys did a great job of putting it all together and the acts that stood out for me were

Tea party aims to boost Home Library

Swindon Library Service is holding a tea party on 8 October to thank volunteers for their efforts and also to recruit new helpers. Home Library is available to anybody unable to visit a library on a long term basis or due to short term incapacity. After an initial interview to establish the kinds of material clients like, volunteers visit in pairs to deliver and collect books, staying for a chat as they become friendly with the customers. New 55s+ advice service to launch

From 15 September Swindon Citizen’s Advice Bureau will be opening a dedicated advice line aimed at helping over 55s, to complement drop-in sessions in different parts of the town. As with the existing CAB free and confidential service, the Over 55s project will provide advice on a wide range of issues including money worries, debt, increasing your income, help applying for benefits, housing, employment, and immigration. Swindon CAB Project Co-ordinator Caroline Davies-Khan said, “we aim to spread the word about the level of financial help available for those over 55. We can check if there is any extra money you could be entitled to receive, for example are you paying too much rent, or too much council tax, are you entitled to a higher pension through pension credit, and should you be receiving

Athlete shows promise beyond her age Isambard Year 8 pupil Keeleigh Chapman represented Wiltshire at the English schools championships in Sheffield in July against runners three years older than she is. She took up the hurdles only nine months ago after her PE teacher Julie Lewis suggested she join Swindon Harriers athletic club. “Because I’m tall Miss Lewis thought I could do well at hurdles,” said Keeleigh. “Running in Sheffield was a bit tough because the other girls were 15 and I’m twelve, but it was good experience. I know what to do to get better.”

The Greendown Year 7 finished the year as Swindon 7-a-side champions in June and aim to start in September in attacking form. With keen coaching from PE teacher Alex Buchalik and Hywel Reese from Supermarine RFC, the team swept all before them during the season. At the sevens tournament they were losing to Commonweal at half time but some bold words from coach Buchalik brought out the best from the players. Sparks fly in Manchester

Greendown School cheerleading team - Greendown Sparks - took third place in the Key Stage 4 English Schools’ championships in June. Seven Year 11s and four Year 8s took part in the two day competition performing two minute routines with dozens of other squads from around the country. Jodie Tielemans said the cheeerleaders skate, dance or are in gymnastic clubs. “Our coach Ms Davies prepared us well, but we saw some very good teams at the competition.” With the Year 11 pupils now gone new members will be recruited after try-outs in September.

One child had to have twelve extractions at Bristol Dental Hospital and many were given glasses by Specsavers. On the fun side the children went to Centre Parcs, enjoyed a picnic at Lydiard Park, visited Swindon ﬁre station, and also went on trips with their host families. Branch chairwoman Gin McGifﬁn said, “the support of Specsavers and by the dentists, the host families as well individuals who have donated money has again

been wonderful. There is so much support in Swindon for CCLL. The children arrive grey and timid and return home with colour in their cheeks and so much stronger. Getting away from the radiation zone gives such a boost to their immune systems.” Vova Evstratovski, 15, one of ten children returning to Swindon, said, “it is very good here in Swindon and I like Centre Parcs a lot. They say she’s the ‘heart of the bar’, and believe it would close without her. Jill said she’s had her ups and downs, but it’s the bar members who keep her going back year after year. “The older members come out of a lunchtime to meet people for a chat because they’re scared to come out at night. They might only be here for an hour but it’s their day out. I’m here for people, to help them... a bit of an agony aunt really. “I said I’d give up after 25 years, but it’s a place I can’t just walk away from. I’ve decorated it three or four times, once when we had a ﬁre 15 years ago after it was petrol bombed

in the early hours of the morning by a former customer with a grudge. I set up a bar in the main hall… and then started decorating.” Jill cooks Christmas dinners for the pensioners and has even made curtains for some and decorated their homes. Phil Packer, a customer and former bar director, said, “Jill always puts Freshbrook Community Centre bar ﬁrst – it would have closed years ago if she hadn’t continued her commitment. She’s a lovely lady. Jill looks after the pensioners, they come in here to see her. It’s a community and Jill is the heart of it.”

The qualifications are being funded by the commercial arm of Swindon College, Business First, which is a training service for

businesses and can fully fund an employee on a Level 2 NVQ across most industry sectors. Linda Heap, Business First operational manager said, "it has been great to work with businesses to assist them train their staff. Funky farm life

Green fingered kids see garden flourish

Children at Oliver Tomkins Junior School will return in September to see what has been growing in their vegetable garden during the holidays.

They have enthusiastically pitched in to turn a hidden sunlit space into productive land since the school garden project was launched twelve months ago. But youngsters had to work hard to organise themselves before any gardening could take place. The school council organised a nonschool uniform day to raise funds for the project after working out the cost of wood to make raised beds and the equipment to prepare the soil, as well as the seeds they had decided to grow. With help from parents and the caretaker the beds were prepared during the winter in time for the first

sowing in the Spring. Within weeks they made their first delivery to the school kitchen and the children raised money for their Autumn crop by selling produce at an after-school vegetable stall. Taylor Loveridge has no problem about eating vegetables. “Our carrots look and taste really good. It’s much better when you eat something you’ve grown.” School council coordinator Julie Warburton said, “the pupils are very keen on their garden and were really pleased how everything has grown so strongly. Now they’ve set their minds on raising enough money to buy a greenhouse.”

Poppy Gibson from the eco-flag flying Peatmoor Primary School reports on her class visit to the Observer ethical garden of the year. On Friday 19 June Year 6 pupils from Peatmoor Community Primary School went to explore farm practices at Lower Shaw Farm close to their school.

The farm sets a great example for sustainability and has won many awards for being eco friendly. The class found out a lot in general about growing organic food and being part of a WOOF Foundation. WOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) helps people have a taste of farm life. The outside buildings were converted into little cabins providing a home for the people during their stay. The children were guided round by a Canadian lady called Melissa. On arriving at the farm they were shown the sheep that had been named Jude, Lulu and Daisy. “The sheep’s skin felt unusual and bizarre,” commented Holly Hughes, 11. The pupils got up to loads of other worthwhile activities including breadmaking, mini-beast hunting, animal feeding, a nature trail, a leaf hunt, playing in the hay barn and

vegetable picking. The farm has four different species of animal including sheep, pigs, chickens and ducks. Many people work on the farm (some permanent, other temporary, most as volunteers) and they have developed a strong relationship like an extended family. The farm does so much to help the community as well as the nation by setting a fabulous example for other farms that feel strongly about being organic and being eco-friendly as they do. The trip was really educational as well as a lot of fun and everyone learnt something new. Mr Watermeyer, our class 6 teacher said, “the trip was a great success and a good lesson outdoors.” Everyone agreed that they would definitely go to Lower Shaw Farm again and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an enjoyable day out.

The annual West Swindon primary schools Gourmet@Greendown cooking competition once again saw an excellent range of tasty dishes prepared for the judges. Children from eight primary schools were asked to come up with mouth watering recipes and ten were chosen to show off their skills at Greendown in early July. Dishes from many cultures were created during the two hour cook off, from Italian meatballs and Mexican enchilladas to South Asian curry and Spanish paellas. Swindon’s Starlight Theatre Academy is offering a free theatre workshop to all prospective students aged 7 to 17 on 12 September, 1pm to 4pm, at St Joseph’s College, Ocotal Way. Launched in September last year the theatre academy provides firstclass training to young people encompassing a wide range of performing arts skills through one-hour classes on Saturdays during term time in dance, drama and singing at the college, working towards a spectacular show for friends and family. I wish to respond to the previous comments in The Link over the last few months made by representatives of the Swindon & Cricklade Railway regarding trespassers on the line. The stretch of the railway south live in close proximity to the line of Blunsdon station has been dis- and could potentially raise a lot of used for decades. The grandparents helped in the classroom, looking at the value of cash with children and contributing to discussions about money based proverbs, wondering whether it makes the world go round, or if it’s the root of all evil. On a blazing afternoon each class laid out a money trail in the playground, competing to see which raised the most for school funds. A total of 219 metres of coins were displayed raising £220. Larry and Dorothy Roberts from Park North visited their grandchildren Olivia and Lucas and were happy to pass on pearls of wisdom. “We were their age at the end of the war, during the flying bomb raids

on London, and money was very tight in our family,” said Larry. “It’s difficult for the children to imagine not having what you would like all the time but we try to get them to appreciate how lucky they are nowadays.” Sheila Jeffcott said, “it’s important children know the value of money and how they have to earn it. Many seem to think it just comes out of the wall.” Margaret Rowlands was pleased to visit Westlea again. “The headteacher and her staff do such a lovely job to make this a special occasion for us. School is a very different place compared to our day.”

Until recently the Beavers and Scouts met at the Devizes Road Church Hall with two packs of cubs at Bath Road Methodist Church. Currently the Beavers meet on Mondays at the Moravian Church Hall in Dixon Street, while the Cubs and Scouts meet at the Methodist Church in Bath Road on Thursdays and Mondays.
