Windmill plans coming forward Plans to build a wind turbine at Windmill Hill Business Park should be on display to the public in October or November. npower renewables put forward the proposal a year ago and a temporary mast has measured wind levels to establish whether the site overlooking Freshbrook and Grange Park is suitable. Swindon Council is considering a major change in provision of secondary school places by stopping the provision of free transport to schools outside West Swindon. For about 25 years parents in the area have had the option to choose Bradon Forest in Purton and have their child bused there at no charge. But this could be stopped from 2009 if the proposal put before Swindon Council's cabinet at the end of July is accepted. It would mean that families selecting Bradon would have to foot the transport bill. The changes will not affect pupils already attending the school or those entitled to free transport. Terry King, who has led the antidevelopment Front Garden campaign for ten years, said, "the developers tell us that no houses will be built in the flood plain but the floods overflowed into the flood risk area. Mr King said that the two balancing ponds shown on the Wichelstowe plans will not be adequate for such torrential rain. "The Front Garden is a like bowl fed by five water sources; the area will not take the kinds of volume of water seen on 20 July. We're quite convinced that the decision to build there is wrong." However, David Evans, Project Director for Taylor Wimpey, said July's flooding was caused by watercourses overtopping their banks. This is consistent with the flood modelling which considers conditions expected to happen once every 100 years. In planning for Wichelstowe, he said a further 20 per cent allow-
ance has been added for future
climate change. "All residential development on Wichelstowe will be outside the predicted flood plain and will be built with ground floors at least 600mm above the predicted worst case flood level to give an added degree of certainty that it will not suffer in times of flood," said Mr Evans. He added that it is important to distinguish between areas of Wichelstowe that show standing surface water after heavy rainfall and areas that are covered by water that has come from overflowing watercourses. He said that the nature of the ground means that water can lie on the surface for some time before percolating away. In undeveloped areas, this will remain the case but drainage in residential areas will take away surface water and release it in a controlled manner into the water courses.

North Swindon gets up to speed at last For nearly six years, residents of Taw Hill, and parts of Priory Vale furthest from the Blunsdon telephone exchange, have been excluded from the broadband revolution. However, dial-up modems can soon be junked when the households get 21st Century high speed connectivity to the internet. The new telephone exchange on Thamesdown Drive, which was due to be operating in May, should come online at the end of September. A spokesman for BT Openreach could not give an exact date but suggested that residents contact their internet service providers for an update on broadband availability. He said that 2,500 lines will be transferred to the new exchange from Blunsdon, but customers should be unaware of any disruption. However, residents have told The Link that they are sceptical about the completion date. "We've been promised faster connections for months and months," one said. "We'll believe it only when it happens."

Getting your child a place at the school of your choice is never straightforward, as parents in West and North Swindon continue to find out. In 2001 Marc Tielemans from Grange Park was one of 109 West Swindon parents unable to get a place fortheir child at Bradon Forest School in Purton. The highly motivated and noisy campaign under the title West Swindon Parents Improving Education (WSPIE) did not achieve their primary aim of getting their children into Bradon, but succeeded in a £3 million building expansion at Greendown which increased the number of places available. Six years on Marc reflects that parents should not be overly concerned if they do not manage to get their child into their first preference school.

Toothill kids win clean up award Year 3 pupils at Oliver Tomkins Junior School were presented at the end of term with a trophy and a cheque for £100 from Swindon Lions in recognition of their hard work to clean up their local environment. The youngsters were so appalled by the state of the park next to their school in the Spring that they asked their teachers to contact Swindon Council. Parent Line, Absence Line and Student Service cards are run through Student Services. They are the interface between parents and the teams of teachers and learning support staff. The Stellar Diner and Food Store are run by Avenance a company that prepares most of its meals from scratch using fresh produce and believes that it also has a responsibility to work with us to inform students about healthy eating and lifestyle. Breakfast, break-time snacks and lunches are served daily and purchased through student service cards. Residents in Peatmoor are dissatisfied by Swindon Council's intention to deprive children in the area by closing a play area. The council say that the play park at Ratcoombe Road, built just 10 years ago, has been repeatedly vandalised and it is too expensive to repair or replace equipment and the safety surface. Parks development officer Caroline Hunt said closing a play area was not a decision taken lightly but after regular and severe damage there is little choice. Ward councillors had been consulted and supported the move. However resident Paul Davies said the decision was hasty and tells vandals that they can get away with damage. "Why hasn't the council consulted us about removing the play area? Have they tried to catch the culprits, by using CCTV or involving the police? They've just decided without involving residents in any way."

Breaking a bone for any sportsman or woman can spell disaster - think of Becks, Rooney and many others - but Swindon speedway rider Billy Legg's recovery from injury in May was boosted by sessions in the oxygen tank at the Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclerosis. The 18 year old Swindon Academy rider from Lydiard Millicent, broke a finger riding for Plymouth in April and was told he would be out of action for six weeks following an operation. But he was put in touch with the MS Centre in Cheney Manor and after just four 'dives' in their hyperbaric chamber, he was fit enough to ride again. "After just one session I could feel the strength coming back," said Billy. "1 was amazed that the bone started to knit so quickly. Young at heart volunteers needed to pass on skills With support from Swindon Youth Service, young people want to bridge the generation gap and would like to hear from older folk they could meet and exchange skills with. The idea is for each generation to learn from the other. Young people can share their skills in using mobile phones, digital cameras and email. In return older people can pass on cookery or gardening tips, or show the younger generation how to knit, sew and dance, or talk about what it was like to live in they years before they were born. There has been a tremendous response from young people who took part in a recent pilot scheme in Highworth. They are presently making a film of older people's perceptions of them which is to be shown in school assemblies to promote the project. The Ramblers' Association has already been in touch to offer its support and one older person has offered to teach card games.
