The children of Peatmoor School, together with Swindon Family Church raised over £1,000 through their Long Neck Appeal earlier in the year. This was used to purchase much needed educational resources for Dihlabeng, a township school, serving mainly deprived and disadvantaged children. The visit had a threefold purpose: leadership and management, creative arts and citizenship. Freshbrook School have temporary senior management in the Autumn term after headteacher Bob Pattenden was appointed as head of Powells School near Cirencester and deputy Jan Parsons left after 14 years to teach at an international school in Holland where her husband is based. "It was unfortunate that our separate decisions coincided," said Mr Pattenden. "It's been a very enjoyable four years at Freshbrook. I have worked with some excellent teachers and committed parents." Jan, who joined when there were 800 children, agreed. "I will miss the lovely children at the school." David Benton will be acting head until January when Steven Luke, headteacher at Hilmarton, near Lyneham, takes over.

The recently formed parents committee at the Jigsaw Day Nursery in Abbey Meads has been tasked with their first assignment - transforming the garden into something more adventurous but safe for children aged between 3 months and 5 years. Ideas so far include pipes for tunnels, raised flower and vegetable beds for the children to have their own planting area, and a wild plant area to attract a variety of insect species. Following her exclusive article in the May Link about the bold initiatives taking shape at Lydiard Park, Sarah Finch-Crisp, Keeper of Lydiard House, provides more details of a £5.5 million project to restore the park for local people, true to the spirit of David Murray John. n 1943 Swindon Corporation led by the dynamic town clerk, David I Murray John, purchased Lydiard Park for £4,500. A world war, an impending national housing crisis and post war rationing of supplies did not weaken the council's resolve to acquire a site of immense quality, beauty and rich history for the benefit of local people. Swindon's rescue of Lydiard Park is now the stuff of history. Virtually single handed and with great resourcefulness, the corporation's Direct Labour Organisation provided the manpower and skills to restore Lydiard House in the 1950s. And whilst the house benefited from the countless individual efforts of local labour, the park became home to hundreds of young Swindon families in the post war years. The Lydiard Estate occupied what is David Murray John now the events field and for many young couples it provided their first marital home and is remembered with fondness. The rapid growth of West Swindon in the late 1970s and the opening of the visitor centre in 1985 created a huge rise in the numbers of people visiting Lydiard Park. Today around 250,000 people choose to come to the park each year. Meeting their needs and the needs of future visitors is part and parcel of the Lydiard Restoration and Development Plan which has been funded by the Countryside Agency. Rescue and revival of a unique legacy Lydiard Park, once a medieval deer park and later providing an early Georgian landscape of gardens, lawns and lakes as the setting to the Palladian house, is Swindon's foremost historic park. The state of the historic landscape, which once boasted ten acres of water, a huge castellated dam wall and an ornamental fruit and flower garden, is now a major cause of concern and action is needed if this unique piece of nationally significant local heritage is to be saved from further decline. The aim of the £5.5 million Lydiard Park Plan is to preserve and enhance the historic landscape whilst upgrading visitor facilities and improving access, leisure and educational opportunities on the site. Community involvement will be a key part of the project from the outset and there will be a wide variety of opportunities for participation as well as associated events and activities. The project will take approximately seven years to complete and major funding will be sought from the Heritage Lottery Fund to achieve the full restoration. West Swindon based energy supplier Innogy have generously matched Swindon Council's initial commitment of £70,000 towards the development stage of the project. Together this represents the twenty-five per cent contribution required to make an initial application to the Heritage Lottery Fund If successful this will enable a series of detailed surveys to begin in the Spring,

Vacancies on Blunsdon Parish Council A new structure for Blunsdon Council came into effect last April when the Local Government Boundary Commission for England decreed membership should be increased from 11 to 17 mem-
bers. The area covered has also been divided into four wards. Filling all positions is proving a problem. Most of the old village remains in the Blunsdon ward which has its full complement of six councillors. Kingsdown ward, in the Hyde Road area is entitled to one councillor, but the position is vacant. This is the same in Baxter ward, a ward of just 97 voters located between Thamesdown Drive and Elstree Way. Abbey Meads ward is entitled to nine councillors but currently has only four. Clerk to the council Rachel Smith says that parish councils have an important role to play on behalf of their communities, not least in the consideration of planning applications affecting their area. And it is the parish council rather than Swindon Borough which is responsible for the provision of dog waste bins; seven have been installed and another four are planned.
