Here's your chance to tell them The first of four 'Partnership with the People' public consultations across the Borough takes place at two meetings to be held at the Link Centre on 8 September to gather views from Swindon residents on how services should be planned and delivered. The Government wants local people to be more involved in local government decision making, and Swindon is keen to get opinions on how services should be developed. Council Leader, Maurice Fanning, right, said the consultation is a result of a commitment made when Swindon became a unitary authority. "When Swindon Borough Council came into being just 18 months ago, we took over extremely important responsibilities, such as education and social services. "We are committed to work in partnership with the Government to ensure their priorities for education, employment, crime reduction and health are met. This means raising standards in schools, reducing hospital waiting lists by coordination between services, working with partners to improve job opportunities, and making the streets of Swindon safer.

A sad loss Our sympathy goes out to Swindon South MP Julia Drown whose new born baby Ruby died on 6 August. A statement from Julia and her partner Bill Child said that Ruby was born with heart and breathing problems. 'She died peacefully in our arms after seven hours. Ruby was a beautiful girl. Our time spent with her was very precious and will never be forgotton. 'We wish to thank all the health staff who have helped and are supporting us at this sad time.'

However keen Link reader David Thompson, Director of the Haydon Development Company, is concerned that North Swindon residents should be clear where responsibilities lie. "We are very concerned about glib statements which are critical of developers, but we should not all be tarred with the same brush," he said. "North Swindon is still in the early stage of development. We have a long term commitment to the area and it is in our interest to respond to criticism and create the right impression." On the two major problems, landscaping and school provision, he said Swindon Council should be held to account. Most of the landscaped areas created by the HDC are now the responsibility of the council. Mr Thompson said the weed growth strangling expensive shrubs beds was a major concern of his. "1 raised hell recently and have committed extra resources to landscape maintenance, even though the council should be doing the job." On school provision, Mr Thompson said a site had been made available to Wiltshire County Council two years earlier than required by the relevant planning permission. "Unfortunately the County did not have the funds to build the school, and we had to wait for action from Swindon as a unitary authority. Similarly a site for a doctors' surgery had been available to the Health Authority for several years, but building of the Abbey Meads GP practice only started in May. Mr Thompson, who is leaving the Haydon Development Company after ten years which included all the pre-construction negotiations with Swindon planners , invited residents to raise issues with Paul Springay at the HDC site office, next to the Police Station on Elstree Way. Vet Simon Cower is celebrating his first anniversary since taking over the Purton Veterinary Group. During the year, the practice has been expanded and refurbished. It now boasts two consulting rooms, an operating theatre, X-ray facilities, a new kennel room and a light airy reception area for pet owners. Practice Manager Lindsey Hall
is enthusiastic about the changes and says "the refurbishment means we have space to cope with expansion of the pet population in West and North Swindon." The practice has three vets who visit farms and stables throughout the area. However, their main

The Alpha Course made sense of life for Mandy and Keith "In the last eight months my life has changed. You see, I've found LOVE, pure unconditional love. I still have to pinch myself to believe what has happened," says Mandy. "OK. Jesus... lam ready to trust you, but to convince me I need you to do two things for me." said Keith. Mandy and Keith's problems as a young couple were all familiar ones: Debt, uprooted from their home town, a mixed marriage, etc. Mandy read a few books on religion from the library, and then took the family to Holy Trinity church, Shaw. Her interest was stirred and she joined the new Alpha course. The videos really spoke to her and she began to question her life, she became a Christian encouraged by Jesus' words, "Ask and you will receive. But she secretly longed for a physical sign from Jesus. Then a couple of weeks later, her three year old daughter was

Mandy sobbed, laughed, wailed - the feeling of relief was immense! This was her sign from Jesus. Keith was more sceptical but came on the next Alpha course. His interest grew as the videos and friendly discussion answered his questions. Having missed the session on prayer, he decided to test it anyway. "OK. Jesus, I want you to payoff all my debts and I want you to get me the Job that Is right for me. Two days later he had dream about winning the National Lottery! That Saturday he won £10. "That was it! Jesus had listened to my prayer and I could trust him, but He wasn't going to pay off my debts that way." He had three jobs in the pipeline, and on the following Monday he phoned the personnel manager of one of the companies. He was stunned again to be offered the position with a bonus. God's timing was just right, and now Keith is devoting his life to him.

diet similar to that of Hoppy, the family pet rabbit. Men find it easier to exercise as their attitude to fitness is psychologically more successful. Women think 'I want to look like a model', men think 'I want to play basketball and I want to be better than my mates'. A woman doesn't often consider whether the sport or fitness session she has chosen is going to be enjoyable, she thinks of it as a means to an end to get back into those dresses. So ladies, the answer is simple: think like a man (well, on the fitness side anyway).
Fitness should be fun and enjoyable. So forget the idea of looking like the Kellog's Special K model and start thinking about your total well being and how being fit and healthy in body and mind will help you to achieve your long term fitness goals. Remember, exercise does not have to be a chore. In fact if it's not, the chances are you'll still be doing it in ten years time. Aim for fitness and not to achieve an impossible body shape. Who knows, you may end up understanding your man and allowing the rabbit to be the only one in the house with a special diet!

GET FIT, FEEL GOOD WITH THE LINK MAGAZINE Big changes from one decision This time last year Catherine Smith from Shaw returned from holiday feeling dissatisfied with life. She was sixteen and a half stone, nearly 40 years of age and unhappy. Just at the right moment, the September Link arrived containing our Get Fit feature. The RosemaryConley Diet and Fitness Club looked attractive and instructor Wendy Cole encouraged her to come along. Catherine has not missed one class in 11 months. "Over the last few years I admit to losing control," she said. "1 tried to diet, but my weight stayed the same or went up. You get fed up so you eat a bit for comfort. My weight was rising and I was having problems with my ankles. I was in a vicious circle and getting more anxious; I'm sure lots of women experience this." Catherine resolved that she would start losing weight before her birthday and that she would get help. "I had never attended a club, but I turned up by myself, in my size 20 tee-shirt and I lost half a stone in the first week. That was it, I knew I was going to lose weight. "With Wendy's encouragement to take one step at a time, and to lose weight slowly, I'm down to 10 stone with another half to go."

Poetry in a pub Summer's end, plan a panto trip Thanks to a Burmah Castrol Arts Award, the West Swindon based Ligden Poetry Society is able to launch a series of live microphone poetry evenings. He's a soul grandad: Sam Moore with Sam Jenner and some of the Greendown backing singers The Wiltshire Festival, over the weekend of 14 to 16 August, was once again blessed with good weather. Rain in June and July and the World Cup put the dampers on sales, but the sun came out in early August and the organisers were rushed off their feet delivering tickets far and wide. The Friday night Classical Extravaganza had the 6,000 plus crowd on its feet joining in with all the proms favourites, delivered with panache by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra led by exuberant conductor Jae Alexander The Party in the Park on Saturday was opened by youngsters from Greendown School: the first school to be invited to perform on the Festival pop day. Later in the evening, fifty students with their singing teachers took to the stage to back soul legend, 63 year old Sam Moore, in a string
of his hits including Soul Man. Several thousand country and western fans turned up on Sunday 16 August for the first country music day. Top of the bill a young looking Glen Campbell wowed the crowd with a supremely professional show. Joined by his daughter Debbie for a medley of hits, he admitted to now being a great grandfather. After rehearsing and performing with the Greendown youngsters, Sam Moore said, "as a grandparent, I am just so impressed by the kid's enthusiasm; I love them
so much." The admiration was mutual. Powerfully voiced twelve year old Sam Jenner who sang alongside the member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Gemma Whitmarsh, 13, said, "he is such a nice man; he really encouraged us and made us feel good about performing on that big stage. It was a fantastic experience for all of us." Festival organiser Andy Cotton said, "the crowds seemed to enjoy the shows we put on and we'll be looking to attract equally good performers next year."
Council considers future of performance space Swindon Borough Councillors meet in September to consider whether to replace the Link Arts Suite with an Active Lifestyle health and fitness centre. If approved, West Swindon's only arts facility will be lost. The suite includes a 150 capacity venue, with lighting, sound and projection, providing an invaluable performance space for school and community projects. Greendown teacher Tim Noble who directed youngsters from Salt Way School in a demanding adaptation of the ancient Greek story of the Odyssey, said it would be tragic to lose the Arts Suite. "It is the only purpose built performance venue in the area; it cannot be matched in schools. With the autumn Shakespeare Festival and other projects in mind, a way must be found to keep the space for the arts." The venue has also attracted national and even international names in the fields of jazz, classical and rock music, comedy, dance and theatre. As well as performance area, it offers craft studios and a photographic darkroom. Julia Holbury, Swindon's Head of Cultural Services, admitted that

After seeing the item on Fieldtrack in the May Link, I made telephone contact. Ihave a 16 year old daughter who is quietly keen to follow her brother and sister in getting a driving licence (and my car). Mary Cooper and Brian Tingly were both helpful and competent with my tentative inquiries. The session Amy and I have had so far at Wroughton airfield was great fun. During the two hours we went from stalling the engine through lots of figures of 8 for systematic steering practice, to a straight line run down the main runway at 50mph. The fact that I
am writing this is proof that we slowed down to a proper 15mph and changed gear for the sharp corner at the end. For future visits, I have a plan of manoeuvres such as controlling the car at three and 10mph - something that we both realise must be addressed after the quote of the evening. "1 can see why people speed now, it is so easy to go fast." For someone underage or without a licence, off public highway experience is vital and I can only applaud the service provided by Fieldtrack. • Fieldtrack advert on page 13.

Separation Survivors A free introductory evening on 'Surviving Separation', a course for people coping on their own after separation or divorce, is being held on 16 September, 7pm, at the Friends Meeting House, 79 Eastcott Hill, Swindon. Heritage day focuses on birth of the NHS Buildings across the country will be open without charge for the Civic Trust Heritage Open Day on Saturday 12 September. In Swindon, the central theme will be the setting up of the National Health Service 50 years ago and the part played by the workers of the Great Western Railway between 1847 to 1948. Heritage cycle route On 12 September cyclists are invited to take part in a sponsored ride in aid of the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust and St Mary's Church, Lydiard Park.
