Town Gardens Christmas spectacle of light aims to draw visitors

Cllr Neil Hopkins, Chair of Leisure, Environment & Amenities for South Swindon Parish Council, said: “After a difficult 18 months for so many people, we are very excited to host Swindon’s first ever light trail, creating a new opportunity for family and friends to come together and celebrate in ways they were unable to do in 2020."

Tickets are available via event ticketing partner Skiddle, with slots available from 5.20pm to 8.40pm and some later slots available on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The event will run daily with the exception of Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Skiddle's website is www. skiddle.com/ Tickets cost £5.50 for children aged 5-17 and £10.50 for adults. Underfours and carers and assistants can attend free with a paying ticket holder. Booking fees will apply.

The Enchanted Gardens Light Trail will run from December 2 to 31, with a 1.5km outdoor trail transforming the historic Old Town gardens into a spectacle of light.

The attraction will be specially created by Light Art Pioneers, Luminism and hosted

by South Swindon Parish Council.

The Enchanted Gardens Light Trail has partnered with Great Western Hospital charity Brighter Futures, which helps the hospital trust buy equipment, provide staff education and improve the environment for staff and patients.

partnership, £1 from every ticket sold will be donated to the charity.

We can’t wait to see the Town Gardens come alive in the evenings during this festive period.

"After the last 18 months, where our charity events haven’t been able to go ahead, we’re really looking forward to getting back out into the community and being a part of Swindon’s first ever light trail.”

Residents of Swindon are encouraged to consider fostering vulnerable children

Swindon Borough Council say foster carers play an invaluable role in Swindon, by not only providing a safe home, but care and guidance to vulnerable children who deserve the chance to have a happy childhood.

For some children who have fled their homes from across the world, the safety and comfort of a foster carer here in Swindon is vital. Nikki, who fosters with Swindon Borough Council, has been fostering for eight years and has provided safety and comfort for several children seeking refuge in the UK. She said: “I have tried all types of fostering but my heart is with caring for asylum seeking children. When they arrive they are always scared and the language barrier often means they have no clue what

is happening to them.

“These young people have left their families, friends and culture to flee to the UK and they are lonely, scared and sometimes overwhelmed.

"They are living with strange people from another culture to their own - the foods and the way of life is very different to their own and they need someone there to support them and guide them through it.

“It’s a joy to see them communicate with me, say words in English and the pleasure they get by being understood. It’s lovely to see them watch TV, where once they would be just looking at the screen, now they’re laughing at the comedy and understand what the films are about. It’s an honour listening to them tell you about their beautiful countries and families

if they can.

“It is very important to take in these children, for us to be humanitarians first and try and understand what these children have been through. They have fled and crossed borders, to try and get here because they know British people have big hearts.”

Swindon Borough Council continues support for members of the public after Stoptober campaign

By Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk October marked the 10th anniversary of Stoptober, which has already helped over two million people make a quit attempt. While Stoptober may be over for another year, Swindon Borough Council says it is never too late to quit smoking and support is available all year round.

The council acknowledges those who quit smoking each have their own individual motivations for quitting, but say a lot of the time it is for those they love.

That was the case for Margaret’s husband Derek, who quit earlier this year. Margaret said: “My husband Derek has been smoking since I can remember - at least 50 years.

Earlier this year he had a heart attack which was terrifying 4

for our family. The doctors told Derek he’d have to quit smoking which he wasn’t too pleased with at first, but I think he realised how worried I was for him and that made him give it a try.

“After smoking for so long we weren’t sure if he was going to be able to do it, but the hospital referred us to the council’s stop smoking service, who gave us a call when Derek got home. They offered him some patches, which for the first time stopped him craving cigarettes throughout the day.

"I won’t lie, there were times when he desperately wanted one, but the stop smoking advisor at the council gave Derek weekly calls to check in on him and support him when he found it the most difficult.

It wasn’t easy, and there are still days he craves a cigarette,

but after 50 years he’s still not smoked a cigarette since his heart attack.

"I think the support from the stop smoking service was really important in giving him the motivation to carry on.”

Swindon Borough Council says although quitting smoking is not easy, there are lots of support options available to help

residents in Swindon or those they love to stop for good.

It is estimated that smokers are three times more likely to quit via a local stop smoking service, so residents wanting to quit are encouraged to find out more about available support and visit the council website or email: swindon.stopsmoking@nhs.net

Sounds Like Women day of music, art and wellbeing helps women and girls

By Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk MP Robert Buckland was the special guest and officially opened the Sound Like Women day of music, art and wellbeing.

The event at the All Saints Church and village hall in Liddington was in support of women and girls, through Sounds Like Women's activities and music workshops.

There was live music, art and herbs for wellbeing and stalls.

The event ran from noon to 6pm, with all funds going towards supporting SLW. All those who took part were volunteers, helping to raise money and awareness.

Sounds Like Women write songs inspired by women’s real stories, help victims of domestic violence to build their confidence, and also organise events and music workshops in a therapy capacity.

Mr Buckland said: “I’m delighted to be here to open

Sounds Like Women can provide aftercare for people and help them to gain confidence and strength.

That is what music can do.

Music, kindness, and a loving atmosphere."

Luiza said the aim of SLW is to raise awareness around domestic abuse, racial bias, and inequality.

Tracy Graham, Chief Ambassador for Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service, volunteers with Sounds Like Women and Wiltshire Police and has become a

singer-songwriter through SLW. She was also a victim of domestic abuse. She said: "I met Luiza through Sounds Like Women when I was still a bit of a broken woman. I was referred to her to take part in the free music workshops that she offers. I was the first lady that she helped around two years ago. I found my voice and my inner confidence. I was half the size I am now; I had no spirit; no soul, and no voice.

SWA saved my life but Sounds Like Women changed my life."

SLW host monthly community cafes at the Lydiard Village Hall from 1-4pm, where people can listen to live music, enjoy homemade food and browse local handmade wares. All funds from the community cafe afternoons go to SLW. Stratton Council's Senior Open Spaces Officer, Oliver Saunders, said: "Play equipment for public areas is never cheap and our excellent contractor has delivered a quality job for us, so thanks to them."

Acting Clerk Amy Loxton added: “The improvements we have made on the park have been a lovely investment into the local community.

“We held a consultation to discuss ideas, and we focused in on thinking about facilities that would cater for those with disabilities. We feel we have achieved our aims of increasing inclusivity here.”

The playpark has already been a hit with local children.

Matthew, aged 6 said: "The park is amazing because of the slide and the climbing frame. I will come back again!"

Raya, aged 9 described the park as 'funny' and 'good.'

Stratton Council improve Swindon park with £55,000 budget

By Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk Stratton St Margaret Parish Council have revamped the Addison Crescent play area to make the park safer and more inclusive.

New play equipment with new safety surfaces has been put in place with the aim of increasing the park's play value. There has also been specific focus on adapting the park equipment for children with disabilities.

Stratton parish chair Cllr Robert Jandy, who is also Swindon Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Heritage, Leisure and the Town Centre Experience, said: "It was a case of listening to what the residents wanted. We have a great piece of land here, which needed to be utilised.

The most important thing was a play area for the children.

Witnessing the use it is getting today just shows how important the improvements have been.

We will continue monitoring the park to see if this project is something we can extend, and look into facilities for older children as well."

Stratton Council's Vice Chairman, Cllr Tim Page, added: “We’ve done these improvements without raising the Parish precept. We’re improving the parish without increasing taxes."

Cllr Jandy officially opened the already busy park with a ribbon cutting.

In response, the council is switching some of its own fleet over to fully electric vehicles (EV).

Over the next few months, 17 new electric vehicles are set to arrive, ready for teams at the Council to use in place of older vans.

While electric vehicles may not be a suitable or viable option for all motorists right now, lots of drivers are already making the switch, with September seeing a record number of new EVs registered across the UK. Lots of helpful advice and support is available for those wanting to find out more. Here in Swindon, the council ran two EV Discovery Days at Lydiard Park and the Orbital Shopping Park last month, providing an opportunity for the public to test drive electric vehicles and

speak to retailers and experts about switching to an EV. By using a free app, called ‘EV8’, motorists can calculate how much money they could save by switching to an electric vehicle compared with their current petrol or diesel motor.

Heroic Swindon PCSO launches new book about his extraordinary life

By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Corie Mapp has launched a new book, Black Ice. It is the latest achievement of many in a remarkable life which changed forever on 31 January, 2010.

It was on that day, while serving with The Life Guards in Afghanistan, that the armoured vehicle he was driving under Taliban fire during an operation to protect an injured sergeant ran over a concealed Improvised Explosive Device.

Two weeks later, Corie recovered consciousness in Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham, only to find that he had lost both his legs below the knee and suffered other serious injuries.

Now a Police Community Support Officer with Wiltshire Police, Corie used his free time during lockdown to write about how his experiences on that traumatic day provided

the catalyst for him to go on to be a European and World Cup champion in para bobsleigh - as well as serving his community in Swindon with ambitions to become a full time Police Constable.

Corie said of the book, which is available via Amazon: “I want people to be inspired by it. It's a story about triumph overcoming adversity.

“It's a story about a person who has had a hand dealt that was a pretty rough one, but

that hasn't defined the person that I became.

“I spent the entire lockdown recording the story over the telephone with my co-author, Christopher Joll. We didn’t meet until after the book was finished, but it doesn’t show.

Having gone through all I've gone through, it was a really cathartic experience because I had lost a lot of memories from the explosion.

“I got to talk to my mum about some of the things that I

would have done as a kid and my sisters reminded me about things.

“I want people who are going through difficult circumstances to read it. I want it to reach them.

“It's important that people who read my book try and understand it through my eyes.

I'm not sure that's possible, but that is what I would like.

“We all go through things and it depends on how you take those things. You can take a negative and turn it into a positive and that's what I want people to do.”

The book is affectionately named Black Ice, a nod to the nickname Corie has been given on the bobsleigh circuit, a sport he picked up to give him a ‘will to live’ after leaving the army.

To his surprise, he has excelled at it, winning a prestigious contest before becoming World Cup champion in 2018 and European Champion in 2020.

Swindonian is Liverpool FC Women player and Welsh international

By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk A Swindonian who has played football since infancy has added a Liverpool FC Women place to a list of honours including being a Welsh international.

Forward Georgia Walters has also played at clubs including Swindon, Reading and Tranmere Rovers, and attributes much of her success to having to train with boys' squads when younger.

The former Ridgeway School pupil said: "I always remember being a young kid and watching dad play on Saturday afternoons, so I got into football at a relatively young age. I was playing by the time I was about four and I've loved it ever since.

"At the time I played for my local boys' team, which dad used to run, alongside playing for the girls' team as well, and I got to a certain age where 8

you can't play mixed football anymore.

"I think I was 13. I used to train at school with the lads up until 18 and I think that's what's given me the competitive edge over the years, training with the boys.

"There's nothing like it. You don't have time to be slow, or to have bad reactions or a bad touch."

In those early days, Georgia

often heard opposition players pointing out that their adversaries had a girl on the team - but when she walked from the field at the end of the match having scored more goals than anybody else they tended to think of her simply as a player from that point onwards.

When Georgia's family moved north four years ago, she got in touch with local team

Tranmere Rovers and secured a place.

A stint with Blackburn followed, and Georgia secured her place with Liverpool earlier this year.

Her personal career highlights so far are her first matches after her international call-up during the pandemic, when Wales - she plays because of her ancestry on her father's side - faced the Faroe Islands and Norway.

The sheer joy of playing has never left her.

"It's exciting. As a forward player you always want to put the ball in the back of the net. You try not to think of the pressure, the moment, as much.

It's just doing what you know best, playing to your strengths.

For me it's finding the back of the net or getting into those positions.

"I would think if you overcomplicate it and try and think further down the line, you'll mess up."

Resurrecting the memory of a forgotten Swindon literary giant

By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Two local historians have released a new compilation showcasing the work of a Swindon literary figure who fell into obscurity.

George Ewart Hobbs was born in 1883 and died in 1946.

In spite of being a Methodist preacher, a family man and a senior Great Western Railway foreman who rose from the ranks after leaving school at 12, he produced hundreds of poems, articles and stories on a wealth of subjects, which appeared mainly in what was then the Evening Advertiser.

In 2019 local historians Noel Ponting and Graham Carter released their first compilation of his work, A Swindon Wordsmith.

They have now released two follow-up volumes, A Swindon Radical and a standalone

book called A Visit to Venus, which gathers a science fiction tale originally published in weekly instalments in the 1920s.

The story of the three books in the series began some years ago when Noel Ponting found a letter from Mr Hobbs and some cuttings among the effects of Mr Ponting's greatgrandfather, Henry Day, who

was the first headmaster of Even Swindon School.

Mr Ponting and Mr Carter then began a painstaking process of combing through archives - including a newspaper archive stored in Oxford - and gathering every scrap of work and information they could find.

Mr Ponting said: "He was as Swindon born and bred as you

can get. He was born in and spent all of his life in Even Swindon and Rodbourne.

"Like many Swindonians of the time, coming from a background of relative poverty, he didn't see that as a barrier to moving up through the Great Western Railway.

"Apart from his preaching and his long hours as foreman of X-Shop, he had an absolute passion for writing.

"By the time we had finished the first book, we had been able to identify 45 poems, two prayers, 10 items of correspondence and over 175 articles."

Invitation for everybody to walk in a Westlea Window Wanderland

By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk A Westlea resident is inviting local people to bring extra festive cheer to the neighbourhood.

Last year Ian Howard led a Christmas Window Wanderland celebration, with residents invited to decorate their windows, and it was so successful that he decided to bring it back for 2021.

Mr Howard, who has lived in Westlea for 30 years, said: "Last year I organised a trail around Westlea for residents to view a range of decorated windows on the theme of Christmas.

"The aim was to get people out of their houses, visiting the roads around them and enjoying the creativity of their neighbours."

Return of Local Offer Big Fortnight Swindon Borough Council will host its annual Local Offer event from 15-26 November.

The Local Offer website https://localoffer.swindon. gov.uk/home - provides information and support for children, adults and their families living in Swindon with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The Local Offer Big Fortnight is a virtual event which will include a range of presentations and focus groups providing information on services.

Outstanding rating for Prospect Hospice Wroughton-based Prospect Hospice was rated 'outstanding' overall in a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The inspectors found that staff provided outstanding care to patients, ensuring they were active partners in their care, and patients felt that they were truly cared for and supported by staff.

The hospice was described as well led, and staff were proud to be a part of the Prospect team. Prospect chief executive Irene Watkins paid tribute to staff, volunteers and supporters.

Swindon Rotary Club game show evening Swindon North and Thamesdown Rotary Club will host a Game Show Experience event in aid of the Olive Tree Cafe at Swindon Rugby Club, Greenbridge on Saturday, 13 November The cafe helps people with mental health issues by offering supportive employment.

Doors to the Rugby Club will open at 6.15pm, and the games, including versions of classics such as Name That Tune and A Question of Sport, will begin at 7.15pm and end at 10.15pm.

Music festival raised more than £12,000 for Prospect

By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk A festival honouring the life of a key figure in the Swindon music scene raised £12,633 for Prospect Hospice.

The My Dad's Bigger Than Your Dad Festival in late August was held in tribute to David Young, the former landlord of The Victoria and 12 Bar, who died in early June at Prospect Hospice after a hard-fought battle against cancer.

The 10-hour festival was sponsored, supported and coorganised by Swindon Link.

The money raised was handed over in a ceremony at the Wroughton hospice attended by David's widow, Anna Sprawson, festival coorganiser Ed Dyer and hospice personnel.

Anna Sprawson said: "My Dad's Bigger Than Your Dad Festival was beyond all of my expectations, and the fact that

Prospect head of Income Sheryl Crouch said that after a difficult year for income generation, the donation meant even more than it usually would have done - and the fact that the money was raised in honour of David Young made the achievement all the more wonderful.

She said Prospect had been honoured to look after David, Anna and their loved ones.

Swindon teenager bids for musical stardom Lawn Manor Academy student Indiana Parsons is to take part in the Voice in a Million concert next year.

The concert will be held in March at the SSE Arena, Wembley.

Alongside Indiana, who has already performed in London, the show will feature around 5,000 children from school choirs singing together to raise awareness of the plight of children in care and the importance of adoption and fostering.

Despite covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns, Indiana has appeared on stage twice this year, having recently performed at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the West End with the Swindon Pauline Quirke Academy, and at the Hackney Empire with the Jodie Steele Associates Elite Musical Theatre Squad.

Indiana’s father, Paul Parsons, said: “Even from a young age Indiana has wanted to perform and she’s at a point now where she’s preparing for her career.

“There’s no stopping Indiana at the moment.

"She’s a natural on stage and she is determined to pursue a career in musical theatre.

Lydiard Park Fireworks Spectacular cancelled this year Swindon and North Wiltshire Scouts' annual Firework and Bonfire Spectacular at Lydiard Park will not be running this year but is planned to return in 2022.

One of the event's organisers said: "It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce that this years' spectacular has been cancelled due to multiple factors. We would like to thank our many supporters and volunteers."

Saturday 20 November will see the Mayor open the Christ Church Christmas Market at 11am and the Church choir will sing carols to close at 2.30pm.

Threshold open a new supported accommodation project to address the complex needs of vulnerable women in Swindon Threshold, Swindon’s homeless charity, acquired an additional property this year in order to accommodate and support women who, for one reason or another, became homeless, sleeping rough and engaged in sex working within Swindon’s Broadgreen area.

Threshold’s latest project house will focus on supporting women, through specialist interventions, whose complex health conditions, substance dependence, mental health support needs and other vulnerabilities had, until now, seen such individuals face enormous obstacles in finding and sustaining accommodation.

Threshold’s chief executive, Michael Keenan, said “This project house is unique in that it is the first of its kind in Swindon, established to address the needs of homeless women, with multiple identified vulnerabilities, who desperately seek to exit rough sleeping and engage with

medical and psychological treatments that address the physical and emotional trauma they have been subjected to and experienced in profoundly impactful ways. If left untreated, ill health and trauma will typically entrench these individuals in a downward cycle of misery and suffering.

We are further developing move-on and retreat facilities with partners, that will be available to all Threshold service users, that will support recovery from addiction and emotional trauma."

Michael added: “Threshold will actively address, through this and associated projects we are developing, the enormous rise over the past two years in the numbers of homeless women entering or remaining in sex work and significantly reduce the duration of time that these women spend sleeping rough. For Threshold, it was imperative to launch this initiative as the project

The Recovery Tree Charity celebrates the progress and future of its Swindon projects

The Recovery Tree Charity covers Twigs Community Gardens, The Olive Tree Cafe, and Pinecones at Pinehurst Community centre.

Several main funders of the charity were in attendance.

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson, Mayor of Swindon Garry Perkins and Wiltshire’s High Sheriff, Sir Charles Hobhouse, were also in attendance.

and Jol Rose from Voluntary Action Swindon started the proceedings with speeches on the importance of mental health and how The Recovery Tree projects help people in Swindon’s community.

Dick said: “At The Recovery Tree Charity, we are getting back into our stride as covid – hopefully – starts to recede. As we tried to continue supporting vulnerable people in and around Swindon, we in turn were supported by a wide variety of generous funders.

Some are represented here today, and I would like to say thank you to you all for that lifeline which has not only allowed us to merely keep going but also provided a very helpful window of financial stability.”

Finding festive enchantment in Old Town

Last month I wrote about the summer events at the Bowl in the Town Gardens, and thought that I would not be attending another organised event in the gardens until next spring, but I was wrong!

From 2 to 31 December there is to be an Enchanted Gardens light trail every evening between 5pm and 9pm.

Tickets are available online from skiddle.com, costing £11.45 (£6 for children).

Well done South Swindon Parish for organising this event, which also supports the Brighter Futures charity, by donating £1.00 from every ticket sold.

The OTRA gardens group is still going strong, but could always do with more recruits.

Currently, there appear to be two options to consider.

The council have proposed moving the collections to the first floor of the Civic Offices and then selling Apsley House.

Meanwhile, South Swindon Parish Council are investigating the possibility of leasing Apsley House from the borough council, for a period of eight to ten years, or until the plans for the new cultural quarter at Kimmerfields have come to fruition. As part of this plan the Old Town library would also

move to Apsley house.

Whilst it is acknowledged that neither is an ideal situation, keeping Apsley House would guarantee that collections remain intact until they can be rehoused in a purposebuilt, more central location.

It would also ensure that Old Town retains one of its major attractions and part of its character.

Most importantly it would

guarantee that the museum and art gallery collections remain accessible to the public, which currently they are not.

There is still work to be done on the costings and feasibility for each option, but we urge councillors to consider the proposals very carefully and think about the outcomes for the people of Swindon resulting from their decision. facebook.com/oldtownresidents

Swindon's Bus Company unveils plans for future switch to electric South Swindon MP Robert Buckland and Swindon Borough Council representatives got a potential glimpse into the future of sustainable transport in the region.

The bus company - which operates services across the region - had a BYD ADL Enviro200 EV electric bus on display at its depot in Barnfield Road, and there was even a chance to take the futuristic vehicle for a spin across the town.

Andrew Wickham, Swindon's Bus Company's Managing Director, said: “We were pleased to have the opportunity to demonstrate this British-built electric bus, and are excited by the potential it offers us - in terms of improving air quality here.

“Swindon’s Bus Company has been working with Swindon Borough Council on a bid for the Department for Transport’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) scheme - which could see 57 new electric buses arrive in the town.

“I’m delighted that the bid has progressed to the next stage of the process.

Swindon bellringing branch is welcoming new members

By Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk Swindon Link visited the bellringing band based at St Mary's in Lydiard Tregoze to find out about its work.

Tower captain and Ringing Master Jason Carter led a training practice for new members who had recently joined the band of ringers.

He said: "It takes about four to six weeks to handle the bell and learn the basics. I get the feeling that members of the public think that bellringing groups are a bit of a closed shop, and that you need to regularly attend church to come along. This is not the case. Some of the bellringers here at St Mary’s don’t go to church and some do."

Swindon branch has 21 towers in total.

Bellringing bands can be made up of people of all ages, but it is recommended that children start around the age of 10. This is due to bellringing requiring a degree of strength to pull and hold the bells.

Roy Sewell is a relatively new member of the St Mary's band and joined them two months ago. He said: "It was a chance meeting with Jenny Moore - the bellringing correspondent at St Mary's - that brought me to the club. Bellringing is something different, and something I’ve always thought about. She said they were looking for people and I turned up and the rest was history.

"I like the history behind the hobby too. The earliest bell is 1635 here at St Mary's.

The inclusivity of bellringing is something that Jason says he admires. He added: “One of the things I love about this hobby is that it is for people of all walks of life and all ages.

One of the beautiful things is that a 12-year-old could be ringing next to someone my age – 45 – next to someone who is in their 80s. There are not a lot of hobbies or pastimes that you can do where this happens.”

St Mary's band member and correspondent, Jenny Moore, has been ringing with the

group since 2009.

When she was asked what the biggest draw for joining a bellringing group like St Mary's was, she said: “What, apart from the fact we go to the pub afterwards? We’re a sociable group and we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

We make people welcome and I’m sure this would be the same for any other bellringing group in Swindon."

Christmas at Steam returns this December

By Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk Steam has announced that tickets are now on sale for its Christmas extravaganza, taking place on 4 and 5 December.

Visitors will have the chance to purchase festive treats and discover unique gift ideas as they browse 50 artisan market stalls displayed amongst Steam’s award-winning displays and iconic locomotives.

The weekend is aimed to be a joyful celebration of the sights, sounds and smells of a traditional Christmas.

This year, Steam welcomes many new traders, as well as those who are firm favourites with visitors. Hand-crafted items on offer range from textile gifts, greetings cards, jewellery and cosmetics, to home furnishings, artworks, Christmas confectionery and decorations.

Old Town Makers Market given go ahead The Shop Small Swindon Makers Market aims to be held each month now there is a confirmed venue.

Shop Small Swindon was created in 2019 by Lisa Lowe from OohLovelyLilo Ceramics and Dona Bradley from Dona B illustrations.

Now that lockdown restrictions have lifted, the market will be going ahead at the Hop Inn. Lisa said: "We are so delighted this artistan market is actually going to happen.

Swindon has so many fabulous makers, artists and creative talented people with no regular venue to sell or promote their work or small businesses.

"We have been overwhelmed with the response to be a trader and have added so many wonderful small businesses to our waiting list. Should these events be successful and we continue into 2022, we will ensure we have a rotation of all these fabulous

businesses."

Lisa said she had been able to book around 20 traders each month.

The stalls will be located upstairs and outside under a marquee at The Hop Inn. There will be a variety of businesses taking part in the market days, in order to show the wide range of what is on offer within Swindon.

Three 'Shop Small Swindon at The Hop Inn' dates have been confirmed for the remainder of this year: Sunday 21 November 11am-4pm, Sunday 19 December 11am-4pm.

Lisa and Dona say they are not running these events for profit, but aim to have somewhere to promote their own work, and other businesses within Swindon.

New Royal Wootton Bassett Academy building unveiled

By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Royal Wootton Bassett Academy has celebrated the opening of a much-needed new sixth form building.

Staff, students and governors gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new building, which supplements the existing provision for sixth formers with more classrooms and study space.

In addition to large new classrooms, the building has a dedicated study space for sixth form students.

There are currently about 380 sixth formers, but the number is growing.

Mr Redmond said: "Last year Year 13 were up on the top floor in a computer room which wasn't so practical, so it's nice now having a dedicated space that we can go and study in if we need it."

The Politics Page Tackling climate change is something we can all work towards Swindon Council Leader David Renard's monthly column Tackling climate change will be headline news for the next few weeks and rightly so because it is an issue which affects all of us.

At the time of writing, almost 200 countries from around the world are due to attend the COP26 global climate conference in Glasgow, which runs for two weeks from 31 October.

I will be one of those in attendance in my role as both Environment spokesman for the Local Government Association and also as Leader of a council which has responding to climate change at the heart of its agenda.

My colleague, Cllr Keith Williams, our Cabinet Member for Climate Change, and Labour councillor Jane MilnerBarry will also be representing the council and the town at this

very important summit and will be travelling up to Scotland in an electric car. Unfortunately, I am travelling to the conference at a different time so was not able to join them, but I will take the long journey by train to minimise my own carbon footprint as much as I can.

The climate talks will bring environmental experts, campaigners and heads of state together to agree coordinated action to tackle climate change. We all hope it will be a landmark moment for the world, with countries pledging to cut their emissions and to present their plans for doing so.

Let us hope in years to come we look back on COP26 as a pivotal time in the world’s response to our warming planet.Government policy worldwide will go a long way to shaping how we significantly cut our emissions over the coming years, but we still all

have a part to play in our everyday lives, no matter how small, when it comes to making the right choices to help the environment.

Last month, the council’s Swindon Travel Choices team organised two Electric Vehicle roadshows at the Orbital Shopping Park and Lydiard Park to give local people the chance to find out more about owning an electric vehicle.

Cllr Williams joined a team of experts from local retailers Cleevely EV and Just EVs, Southwest EV Owners Group, and the Energy Saving Trust, to answer any questions people had about grants, finance, charging points and anything else they were not quite sure of. There were also electric motorbikes and push bikes on show.

Electric vehicles now have a 9.5 per cent share of the UK new car market, up from 5.4 per cent last year. If this

growth continues we could see a million electric vehicles on our roads by 2025 and projections estimate this could rise to anything between 2.7m and 10.6m by 2030.

So we need to be prepared, especially when the Government has committed to phasing out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030. “We’re doing all we can here in Swindon and it was recently agreed by Cabinet that the council will provide support to those Afghans temporarily accommodated in Swindon under the national Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy as well as for up to four households being permanently accommodated under the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy.

Developer consults local people on Cricklade plans

It aims to build on land to the north of Reeds and Middle Ground, north of the town.

The developer held an exhibition at Cricklade Town Hall for interested members of the public to meet its team and find out more about the proposals.

Invitations were posted to the local community, but for those who missed the event details have been put online at www.newlandhomes.co.uk/ crickladeconsultation Tom Sheppard, Planning Director for Newland Homes, said: “Cricklade has been identified as a location for new homes and we are proposing a climate-considerate collection of new homes."

Gloucestershire-based

Newland Homes built its first home in Cricklade in 1991 and has a strong connection with the local area. One of its most popular house designs, the Cricklade, is named in tribute to the town.

It has just finished construction of 25 one, two, three and fourbedroom homes off West Mill Lane and over the past three decades the company has created and supported many local communities.

Most recently, Newland Homes made a significant donation to Cricklade Pre-

School Playgroup to enable the charity to demolish and replace its prefabricated nursery building, which was unlikely to last another winter.

The development proposals

by Newland Homes, the firm says, will be in keeping with Cricklade’s local character and the mix of properties will include affordable homes for sale and rent, starter or first homes for the under-40s, custom and/or self-build homes, as well as homes for sale on the open market.

Properties will be built

using the latest construction techniques, and Newland Homes says the provision of solar panels and air source heat pumps means the homes will be zero-carbon in terms of energy use. Diners clamouring to eat at Swindon's Pick Up Point

By Barrie Hudson Pick Up Point in Devizes Road opened at the beginning of October, and since then owner Josh West and his team have barely known a moment's rest.

"There's been loads of drama, fun and excitement - all the drama a restaurant opening brings and you can't anticipate," he said.

As of the time of writing the menu features an array of four styles of burger with intriguing names such as Orange Sunshine and Seoul Survivor, together with a variety of other dishes. A weekly special steak dish is proving very popular and there are plans to add more.

Josh is also thinking about expanding the dining area possibly in time for Christmas and enabling the restaurant to cater for larger parties.

How would he describe what Pick Up Point has to offer?

"It's hard to categorise but I suppose brasserie food accessible, bustling, noisy, with a whisky bar kind of feel to it.

"The main thing is that we are cooking accessible food, things that people like. My background is French cooking, French technique, but the food we're serving is American, really - burgers and steaks.

"We'd love to flex some culinary muscle. Steaks are going down a storm at the moment.

"It's been mental since the opening - just non-stop.

"The only thing I was nervous about before we opened was, 'What's it actually going to be like when people come in?'

Because you can't plan for that. The vibe is great - we turn the music up a couple of notches to make it more intimate.

"What I would like to see us is a bustling and slightly noisy neighbourhood restaurant. I would also love to see families come out and children here for

Saturday and Sunday lunch, especially. I think that makes for a warm and welcoming atmosphere when you see people sitting around a table with their children. It shows that they also have faith in us."

Josh was born in Swindon and grew up in a catering business in Marlborough.

"It's always been in my blood," he said. "I was quite a latecomer to the industry professionally. I went to train in France in my mid-twenties, in Paris - the Chamber of Commerce."

Fellow graduates of the prestigious professional culinary school have gone on to work throughout the world.

"I was the only English person there. I'm glad I chose that course as opposed to any others.

"Then I went to work at a bistro in London - very high pressure, old-school tough chefs. It was a horrible experience but I learned a lot. They don't teach like that anymore.

"I went to work in pubs, eventually working myself up to head chef.

"I worked in pubs for years across the Cotswolds and around Wiltshire. Then I got

an injury, broke my leg in a bar brawl! That was in the Cotswolds, I was sticking up for one of the barmen who was getting some trouble from

"We were doing stuff that people recognise and just trying to put the Pick Up Point mark of quality on it - just doing it better.

"They were hugely popular and ultimately that put us in the position to open this place, because people eventually were just having faith in what we were doing."

The dishes Josh creates use ingredients from many culinary traditions, but the chef avoids the word 'fusion' as he feels a great deal of nonsense is spoken about it, with some establishments mixing things up for the sake of it. His philosophy is to mix things only if they work.

The Pick Up Point ethos?

Mark Kenna from Bad Blood Films

Mark Kenna lives in North Swindon with his family and - together with David Creed - is a founder of the horror and thriller film studio production company, Bad Blood Films. The company's first feature ‘Sacrilege’ was released in cinemas last March. Mark discusses the journey of the film, from script to screen.

For those who have not yet discovered Bad Blood Films, could you talk a little about the company?

“It’s a British horror and thriller film studio production company, making features within the UK. We started the company back in 2013.

Our aim is to develop into a sustainable film company within the UK and to become the British Blumhouse. We want to sustain the film industry and keep using skillsets here in the South West. It's all about trying to make films that British people like as well as the rest of the world.

We also want to build our Bad Blood tribe. Members of the public can sign up and receive a newsletter from us. We will host competitions and maybe offer opportunities to come down to set. It is an opportunity for local businesses or members of the public to get involved and come along for the ride."

Can you talk about Sacrilege, and the process of making the film?

"Sacrilege is a pagan folklore, cult-horror film. It's more in your head - and about facing your fears and exploring friendships/relationships.

Sacrilege has four strong female leads which is not commonly done within the genre.

David Creed sent me the script in December 2019 and we started raising funds. By the February of the next year, we had half the budget and started making the film. The film making process felt really home-grown and there were friends, colleagues, catering companies, all helping out. We even used the word's first robot dolly!

50% of our cast and crew were female both in front and behind the camera. We really want to promote women in film.

'Sacrilege' ended up being two to two and a half years in the making. Our postproduction took around 8 or 9 months when it should have taken 3- 4, but because were low budget, we had to work around supporting ourselves.

I had to freelance and taught in film schools in Estonia and Norway. I was also working for Dolby on Venom and other films. I was with them as their senior film consultant for twelve years responsible for Dolby in Scandinavia before Bad Blood Films.”

What was the release and premiere like?

"We self-released in 43 cinemas across the UK and Ireland on March 6 2020 with Cineworld direct, and hand delivered our film to the BBFC to get our rating of a 15. In February 2020 we had our film premiere at Cineworld, Leicester Square. The VP of Cineworld said they hadn’t seen anything this big since ‘The Rise of the Skywalker.’

We put blood dripping down the steps alongside ‘Face your Fear’ posters. There were 302 people at the premiere who all felt part of the project. This was very important. It made me feel quite emotional. We've made a movie we can all be proud of.”

Being based locally in Swindon and Bristol, did you use the locations on offer around you?

"From May 6-24 we spent 90% of the filming time at the Forest of Dean in South Gloucestershire. This was the location of the lodge in the film.

look and the Forest of Dean was a great place to get that effect.

We also shot in and around my 40k bike loop from North Swindon, Purton, Minety, Oaksey, Cotswolds lakes, Cricklade and home. We shot at Oaksey Church, Lechlade Bridge, over the A419 dual carriageway bridge and the end of Cricklade High Street.

We shot the burning man scene at the Forest of Dean in December, and all our cutaway scenes within Wiltshire. The burning scene in the film is done with a real stunt man and real fire. We used David Anders who was a stunt man for James Bond. We wanted to give a glimpse of what we can do if we have a decent budget.”

'Sacrilege' has got to where it is today due to community support and funding. Has it been nice to collaborate with local people and organisations and give something back?

"Yeah, that's what it’s all about - collaboration. We have had amazing support from the local media. We have also been dealing with New College and Sam Storey, who runs media courses there.

My son is undertaking a computer course at New College, and he helped me with the digital marketing campaign for 'Sacrilege.' He did 30 posters for the 30-day countdown. He’s 14, and a social media and photoshop wizard.

I was asked if I would come

to New College to do a group session with some of the students, and of course I was happy to. I love giving back to the younger generation.

We also worked with students from Bristol's University of West England. Some of the university's students did our foley sound at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in Box. We view this as a massive opportunity for the South West and we just want to do more of that.”

'Sacrilege' won the FIFF London award for 'Best Horror' and received other nominations. Did you expect this reaction?

“Not at all. To get nominated for the South West version of the RTS awards - held down in Bristol - was amazing.

'Sacrilege’s VFX company, Primary VFX, are a local Bristol company who have worked on Netflix’s The Witcher and some of the Harry Potter films.

'Sacrilege' was nominated for best VFX. The film also received a nomination for best composer.

The film ended up being sold in 16 different territories around the world including US/ UK, Germany and Scandinavia, which is amazing. We were officially selected for 10 international film festivals, winning 6 for best horror in UK, best concept in India, two for best female director of photography out in Toronto/US. We also had a physical DVD being sold in Walmart and on Amazon.com and a Blu-ray in Germany."

New Swindon bar opens with a Boom

Swindon’s latest leisure offering opened on Saturday 16 October to a packed night of axe-throwers, crazy golfers and shuffle boarders.

The development has seen £1.5m spent on converting two of the empty units into a giant play warehouse, with arcade games, electric darts, a mini 'crazy' golf course, American pool, virtual reality, a Lebanese food hall, bar and hireable beer pong tables.

Usually seen in big University towns, Boom Battle Bar has its other venues located in Cardiff,

Norwich, Liverpool and will be coming soon to 22 other cities across the UK. The concept shifts the stable leisure model from bowling alleys and cinemas to something much more dynamic.

Natasha Bell, General Manager said: “It's so exciting to be launching something really unique in Swindon.

"The people that have visited so far have loved the venue and the different games and we're sure it's going to become a regular feature on people's night out."

By Barrie Hudson A specially designed drain cover has been unveiled by Thames Water in Swindon to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

The cover, located in Wood Street, is thought to be only the second of its kind in the UK. It has been painted in the rainbow colours which are symbolic of the LGBTQ+ movement along with black and brown to represent LGBTQ+ people from black and Asian backgrounds.

The unique design also includes LGBTQ+ symbols along with the logos of Thames Water and the cover manufacturers, Wrekin Products, and the slogan: “Every rainbow needs a little water to shine."

Swindon Pride chair Jo Sharpe said: “It’s fantastic to see Thames Water providing a visual representation and acknowledgement for the LGBTQ+ community and their

own employees. This may seem like a small gesture but it’s a commitment to equality and diversity.

Thames Water says the slogan on the cover, chosen by Thames Water employees, links to the company’s core purpose of water management and expresses how communities

shine and thrive because of the diversity within them.

The cover is an exact copy of one installed by Thames Water in Reading last month. While coloured drain covers have been photographed in other countries, including Japan and the USA, it’s thought the one in Reading was the first in the UK, with Swindon's the second.

Two further covers will be installed in London in the coming weeks.

Thames Water has been sponsoring Swindon Pride since 2016 and the new drain cover is purposely positioned on the Pride parade route.

The company is a Stonewall Diversity Champion and has been ranked by the Stonewall charity as one of the country’s top 200 employers. It aims to break into the top 100 by 2025.

A Thames Water spokesperson said the firm was committed to representing the diverse community it served and was proud to be an inclusive employer.

Review: Bat out of Hell musical storms theatre like mythical beast

Just as it's easy to understand why the late Jim Steinman's original work, as sung mainly by a certain Meat Loaf, became part of the global musical landscape and charted for hundreds of weeks, it's easy to understand why the stage version is greeted with course, the title track. open arms wherever it roams Bat Out of Hell isn't the like some enormous, deafening, only stage musical to lead its fire-breathing beast left over audience through a slew of from a mythical era. rock classics, but it's unusual in The best-loved tracks from that Jim Steinman envisioned a the original album and its musical as far back as the late sequels were all present and 1960s, long before the album correct, including Dead Ringer was recorded. for Love, Two Out of Three The musical finally came Ain't Bad, All Revved Up With together in 2017, and is set in No Place to Go, You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth, a post-apocalyptic version of Manhattan. The superb cast are all as spectacular as dancers and athletes as they are singers and actors, although special praise must go to Glenn Adamson as Strat, whose moves, looks and characterisation call to mind a sort of hybrid involving Roger Daltrey's Tommy, Peter

Frampton and a top-class gymnast.

Co-star Kellie Gnauck was making her first appearance as Raven, but so assured was her performance that it was as though she had been playing the role for years.

Other stand-out performances were delivered

by Rob Fowler as villain Falco, Sharon Sexton as his wife, Sloane, and James Chisholm and Joelle Moses as Lost members Jagwire and Zahara, although the entire cast must take credit for a show which brought a wellearned standing ovation.

The dystopian dreamscape of a set was so perfect as to be a vital character itself, and included a big screen on which were shown images captured by a videographer who discreetly prowled.

Anybody who likes the album and who has yet to see the musical would do well to track it down.

SEAT Ibiza: Fifth generation of a hardy MOTORING perennial small car The SEAT Ibiza is one of the best small cars on the road, with great handling, bags of room and low running costs.

Vanetta, wife of the great Swindonian Joel Joffe, unveiled a memorial to him in the Liddington village hall recently.

Joel lived for several decades in the village.

Vanetta gave a moving speech that broke most of us and we’ve spoken about little else since. A walking path by the River Lidd, near where he lived, was named “Joel Joffe Way.” It was also lovely to see his daughter, Deborah,

It feels as if something special is begining to brew at the County Ground. With every victory the team is issuing a statement of intent to the division. A Swindon side which many expected to struggle in its aim of staying in the league is now flourishing.

All they need to do is take their form on the road into home games and who knows how far they can go.

After back to back derby wins in October the narrative around Swindon's season changed. As football fans we can all be greedy and hungry for success.

After turning over early pace setters Forest Green at their own patch with several key players missing I thought perhaps just surviving in this league would be an underachievement. The big question going into this season was just how long it would take Ben Garner to gel this new look squad into a team. We all 28
