Only a few homes unsold in new development bordering Old Town Taylor Wimpey says time is running out for people wanting a home at its Ambrose Gardens development on the edge of Swindon’s Old Town.

Ambrose Gardens, the firm says, brings a mix of 62 high quality homes to Croft Road.

The development launched in June of last year and the first family moved in at the start of November - but now only a handful of plots remain.

Among the first residents to settle into their new home was Kelsey Bird, 26, who moved into a two-bedroom Belford house in January with partner Adam Bright, 22, and their dog, Luna.

The first time buyers were both living with their parents in Swindon before their move, but were very keen to find a place they could call their own.

Kelsey, who works in the construction industry, said: “We had come to the next chapter in our relationship and felt it

was time to move into our first home together.

"We chose a new build as we found it easier to get on the property ladder using Help to Buy, and we loved the idea of being the first to live in the home and make our own mark on it before it was even built.”

When Kelsey and Adam started their property search at Ambrose Gardens in March of last year it was their first look at a new build development.

They were impressed with what they saw.

Kelsey said: “Taylor Wimpey was recommended to us through a family friend, and when we looked at the twobedroom show home we loved the specifications and the options available.

“We knew we didn’t want anything too big for us and we had to keep to our budget, but we loved the fact that the Belford offered open plan

living, with the kitchen and living room in the same space.

"We also loved the front porch, the downstairs cloakroom and separate utility area for a washing machine and tumble dryer.”

could have been difficult, but the Taylor Wimpey team at Ambrose Gardens were on hand to make things as simple as possible for the young couple.

Being back amongst people does seem a bit weird after the horrific year we've all had.

We're now so conditioned to keep our distance and to not be amongst the crowds that it's easy to feel suffocated by it all as things start to open up again.

This pandemic and all that it has done to change our society will have ramifications for years to come when it comes to public health, the economy, arts

and culture and even simply socialising.

But one of the biggest unknowables will be its impact on mental health.

As a society we have all been through a very traumatic experience. Some of us have lost loved ones, others might still be suffering from the effects of long covid, and some still be suffering from the long months of loneliness and isolation.

It is up to all of us now to help put everything back together again, to mend the fissures caused by the pandemic.

Swindon cautiously enters the next stage of the roadmap From 17 May Swindonians were given a lot more freedom as the country entered the next stage of the Government's roadmap out of lockdown.

The next phase is due to start on 21 June with what had been promised to be the end of social distancing guidance.

But because of the rising numbers of coronavirus cases attributed to the Indian variant The Government has sounded alarm bells and have said they will not be able to make a clear decision on that stage until 14 June.

17 May: What’s changed: - You should continue to work from home if you can. When travelling within the UK, you should aim to do so safely and plan your journey in advance.

- You should get a test and follow the stay at home guidance if you have covid-19 symptoms.

- Gathering limits have been eased. Outdoor gatherings are limited to 30 people and indoor gatherings are limited to six people or two households (each household can include a support bubble, if eligible).

- New guidance on meeting friends and family emphasises personal responsibility rather than Government rules. Instead of instructing you to stay two metres apart from anyone you don’t live with, you are encouraged to exercise caution and consider the guidance on 4

risks associated with covid-19 and actions you can take to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

- Indoor hospitality venues such as restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes can reopen.

- Remember that the risks of close contact may be greater for some people than others, and in some settings and circumstances there will be specific guidance that you will need to follow even when you are with friends and family.

- Organised indoor sport can take place for all. This includes gym classes. It must be organised by a business, charity or public body and the organiser must take reasonable measures to reduce the risk of transmission.

- Indoor entertainment and attractions such as cinemas, theatres, concert halls, bowling alleys, casinos, amusement arcades, museums and children’s indoor play areas are permitted to open with covid-secure measures in place.

- All holiday accommodation can open, including hotels and B&Bs. This can be used by groups of up to six or two households (each household can include a support bubble, if eligible).

- People can attend indoor and outdoor events, including live performances, sporting events and business events.

Attendance at these events is capped according to venue type, and attendees should follow the covid-secure measures set out by those venues.

- Funeral attendance is no longer limited to 30 people, but will be determined by how many people the covid-secure venue can safely accommodate with social distancing. Limits at weddings, wakes and other commemorative events have been increased to 30 people.

- Other significant life events,

such as bar/bat mitzvahs and christenings, will also be able to take place with 30 people.

- The rules for care home residents visiting out and receiving visitors have changed, allowing up to five named visitors (two at any one time), provided visitors test negative for covid-19.

- All higher education students are able to access in-person teaching.

- Support groups and parent and child group gathering limits have been increased to 30 people (not including under fives) - There is no longer a legal restriction or permitted reason required to travel internationally. A traffic light system for international travel has been introduced, and you must follow the rules when returning to England depending on whether you return from a red, amber or green list country.

Conservatives make gains and retain power in borough council election The Conservatives convincingly won the 2021 local elections.

The party has a 15-seat majority in the Swindon Borough Council chamber after what turned out to be a bad count for Labour and disastrous for the Liberal Democrats, who were left with no councillors at all.

Independent Priory Vale councillor Emma Faramarzi has resigned ahead of the end of her four-year term, meaning a by-election must be held in the ward.

PCC election must be rerun after winning candidate disbarred A new Swindon and Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner election must be held following poll winner Jonathon Seed being disbarred.

The Conservative Wiltshire Council member is ineligible to hold the office because of a driving conviction dating from the early 1990s.

In the election held on Thursday, 6 May, he gathered a total of 100,003 first and second choice votes, placing him firmly ahead of other candidates.

LibDem Liz Webster won 35,013 votes, Labour's Junab Ali won 34,147 votes, independent Mike Rees 31,722, Green Party candidate Brig Oubridge 16,606 and Reform UK candidate Julian Malins QC 4,438.

In accordance with electoral regulations, as Cllr Seed secured more than 50 percent of first and second votes another election must be held.

The Conservative candidate has insisted via his legal

representatives that he has always been open with his party about his conviction, and had been told by the party he was eligible for candidacy.

It was subsequently announced by Wiltshire

Police that the neighbouring Thames Valley force had been called in to lead an external independent investigation into the election.

Wiltshire Police said in a statement: "We have asked another police force to lead on this work to ensure independent oversight and to remove any potential conflict of interest."

The statement added that as a result of this development, it would not be appropriate to make further comment.

Swindon Council get behind national campaign to find new foster carers Swindon Borough Council supported Foster Care Fortnight, a national campaign from the Fostering Network, in the hope of inspiring more people in the town to become foster carers.

The theme of this year’s Foster Care Fortnight campaign was #WhyWeCare, which encourages anyone involved in fostering to share why they are involved in fostering and why supporting local children and young people is so important to them.

Over two weeks starting from 10 May, the council made its mission to inspire people of all backgrounds and lifestyles to take the first step in becoming a foster carer, and to help provide more local places for children who need them.

Throughout the campaign, the council shared content across various channels, including its Facebook and Twitter pages and through its residents newsletters. This content

included videos featuring genuine foster carers and care leavers, who recounted their personal experiences of fostering, to show the lifechanging impact becoming a foster carer can have on children and young people in their town.

Additionally, the council hopes the campaign was able to dispel common myths around fostering, which can often prevent people from enquiring.

Regardless of background or lifestyle, the council is looking for people who: - have a wish to support children to have positive opportunities, whilst keeping in touch with their family and friends - have time to support a child in their family home - have a spare bedroom As a local authority, the council is able to offer support, training and a local fostering

community to work closely with applicants throughout the programme.

Reflecting on her time as a foster carer, Carol Watts, who has recently retired as a foster carer in Swindon, said: “The best thing about becoming a foster carer is helping each child and knowing you did your best for them. Even if they don’t keep in touch as much, I know we gave them a lovely secure home and helped them as much as we could.

“It’s so rewarding to see them flourish and hopefully go on and live an independent life and remember us with fond memories.”

Coun Mary Martin, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “Providing foster care for children in Swindon and keeping them close to their support network of family or friends is so important to their wellbeing. But in order to provide foster care close to home, we need more foster

carers in the borough.

“I would encourage anyone who is considering becoming a foster carer to make the first step and get in touch with the council.”

Prospect Hospice supporters smash 36-hour fundraising target A total of £170,000 was raised by Prospect Hospice as it began a new challenge to fund end of life care in the community.

The Wroughton-based charity, which serves people throughout the area and beyond, is grateful to all who helped and continue to help with its efforts.

Prospect Hospice kicked off its Thanks a Million fundraiser with an online challenge to raise £150,000 in just 36 hours, with people donating online.

It was overwhelmed when so many donations poured in that the target was not only reached early but beaten by £20,000.

Prospect Hospice chief executive Irene Watkins said: “What can I say other than thanks a million to everyone who has donated over the last couple of days to help support end of life care in this community.

“When we embarked on this ambitious project we had no idea what the response would be.

"It was something new to us but we had confidence that our supporters would be there for us when we needed them.

"We knew the support for Prospect Hospice in the area was strong but I’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of donations we’ve received in such a short space of this.

“As a charity, we’re only able

to deliver our specialist care to those who need it thanks to generous donations of local people.

"Because of those donations, all the care we provide is free of charge to whoever needs it, whenever they need it.

"Every penny really does make a difference to our patients and I want to thank everyone who has donated as part of this Thanks a Million challenge.”

The charity has also

announced that following the successful re-opening of its charity shops in April, it is opening a selection on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays.

The Gorse Hill, Old Town, West Swindon and Cricklade shops will be open on Sundays, with the Regent Street shop open on Sundays fortnightly.

Royal Wootton Bassett pupils will be racing prototype cars thanks to a Rotary donation Year 7 pupils at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy will be immersed in world-leading engineering technology by Bloodhound Education, who will be bringing the excitement of the Bloodhound Land Speed Record Car (LSR) to the school, thanks to a donation from the Rotary Club of Royal Wootton Bassett and District.

Across two days in June, around 230 pupils in Year 7 will take part in hands-on engineering challenges, putting learning into practice and developing skills confidence with interactive workshops and presentations. The pupils will be working as engineers to design and race their own prototype cars.

Bloodhound Education is a charity which brings STEM subjects to life and makes the link between the classroom and careers. The Bloodhound Land Speed Record project is a pinnacle of British

engineering and innovation. It is helping to push boundaries and demonstrate pioneering new technologies, requiring engineers to think in new ways – and it is these new ways of thinking that inspire young people in these innovative sessions that develop their skills in design and technology, as well as other STEM subjects.

Swindon near top in eco-friendliness poll

People living in Swindon are among the nation's most waste-conscious according to new data.

A survey conducted by up-cycling furniture firm The Hairpin Leg Company has revealed that Swindon residents are behind only those of Bristol and Wick in Scotland when it comes to Google searches relating to environmentally-conscious waste disposal.

£3,000 top prize in air ambulance raffle

Wiltshire Air Ambulance has launched its 2021 summer raffle.

The top prize is £3,000, but there are also runners-up prizes of £500, £100 and one of five £25 prizes.

Supporters who enter before 11 June can also win a £100 Marks & Spencer voucher.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance critical care paramedic Sophie Holt said: “I’ve been working at the charity for three years and it’s fair to say the last 12 months or so have certainly been the most challenging for the aircrew.

“The statistics show the need for our service has never been greater, as we were called to a record 1,238 incidents during 2020."

Tesco community grants available Tesco is encouraging charities and community groups in Swindon to apply for funding for local projects that matter to them.

The Tesco Community Grants scheme will award funds to charities and organisations helping children and families access food and support.

Eligible projects include breakfast or holiday lunch clubs, food banks, youth clubs and schools.

Magic number is 80 for Swindon charity fundraiser A Swindon 80-year-old is walking 80 metres in his garden 80 times a day for 80 days in aid of charity.

Michael Thomas, a retired civil engineer who lives in Pinehurst, plans to finish on 26 July - shortly after he turns 81.

By that time he will have covered 320 miles, or roughly the distance from Swindon to Glasgow.

The 80-metre stretches are the distance to the end of his garden and back.

His walk is in aid of Cameroon Global Rehabilitation Services (GLORES), which helps children with disabilities.

Mr Thomas said: "It was probably Captain Tom who inspired me. I thought about how I could raise some money and this might be an opportunity.

"Walking up and down the garden is something I can manage, although it takes me quite a while!

"I do like walking and I like cycling. I've been cycling since I was four. Not for sporting purposes, just to get around."

GLORES was started in 2004

by Cameroonian Alfred Wingo, after he received prosthetics training in the USA. Mr Thomas encountered him in 2009 during his own work with Freedom in our Hands, an international movement committed to safeguarding

the environment for future generations and a fair distribution of wealth globally.

Star children's author in virtual Swindon visit Anthony Horowitz virtually visited schools across Swindon to encourage reading for wellbeing.

The visit by the author of the best-selling Alex Rider and Power of Five book series was part of the #Take10ToRead challenge and Connecting Stories.

Connecting Stories is a new initiative delivered by the National Literacy Trust and led by the trust's Swindon Stories.

The Arts Council Englandfunded project aims to increase children's and young people’s access to literary experiences and books.

Children and adults across Swindon stopped what they were doing to pick up a book and read for 10 minutes.

The author told his audience he found reading “...a wonderful way to escape from the world into a safer, happier, more enjoyable place.”

In a Q&A session with the children, Anthony revealed his favourite place to read was in bed, and added: “I start each day, every morning, I read a book – or part of a book, a chapter or page of a book, depending on how I’m feeling.

Lawn Manor Academy students take action on Earth Day 2021 Staff and pupils at Lawn Manor Academy put the planet at the top of their priority list on Earth Day as they committed to taking practical steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

Lawn Manor Academy, which is part of the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust, is already an established Forest School – with a dedicated outdoor learning area that allows children to develop a range of skills that cannot be taught in the classroom.

Pupils are encouraged to be active and explore nature working in the school’s outdoor small-scale eco-system, which was developed by head of geography Guy Henderson and some of his Forest Schooltrained colleagues, as research shows that being outside helps improve mental health, communication and social relationships.

area, both during lessons and at the Lawn Manor Forest School after-school club.

Guy led the Earth Day initiative by first splitting students into groups to brainstorm various ways they could do their bit to reduce climate change.

“As a school we decided to pledge to change the way we do some everyday things, so we looked at how we could do that realistically,” said Guy. “We started off by looking at the history of Earth Day, which is 51 years old this year, and then explored how much difference relatively small changes in behaviour can

have when they are adopted by many people. One of the simplest things is not to charge mobile phones overnight. Most phones only need an hour or two to recharge, so if I put mine on to charge while I’m asleep I’m wasting perhaps six or seven hours of electricity, every night.

“We also marked earth Day with a ‘no lights’ day – all lights in classrooms and corridors were left off, and although corridors did feel a bit dark it was a stark reminder of how we don’t need to have lights on all the time, all year round.”

Years 7 and 9 spent the day

carrying out environmental quality surveys around the school, looking at how outside areas might be improved and checking whether there was any litter on the site, while Year 11 pupils worked in the outdoor eco-system area.

Teachers also contributed to the day, by initiating a No Screen day. Instead of using whiteboards, they issued pupils with a single A5 sheet to log tables to capture research.

Guy Henderson said the day couldn’t have gone better.

“We’re hoping to repeat the No Screen days and we all learned a lot about how we can conserve energy and recycle everyday goods, but for me the best thing was hearing several pupils describe what they were doing as ‘awesome’.

"It was great to see them getting so involved, and clearly caring so much. I think they can’t wait until Earth Day 2022!”

Bus firm sells face coverings for air ambulance Swindon’s Bus Company is celebrating its latest round of fundraising.

The company has been selling Wiltshire Air Ambulancebranded face coverings to people visiting its travel shop in Fleming Way. The charity approached the bus company to see if it could offer the masks to customers, with the entire amount raised being returned.

“We have been fundraising for Wiltshire Air Ambulance for several years - raising thousands of pounds - and this was our latest effort,” said Swindon’s Bus Company’s Lucy Humphrey.

“The charity is a critical resource which exists simply to save lives, and it relies heavily on donations to carry out its vital work. The past year has been incredibly difficult for us all and our region has never been more in need of this wonderful service.

"We know that many of our team at Swindon’s Bus

Company have been or will be helped in some way by Wiltshire Air Ambulance, so we remain committed to raising more funds and awareness over the coming weeks and months.”

Established in 1990, Wiltshire Air Ambulance needs to raise £3.75m a year to keep its lifesaving service operational.

The charity relies on generous donations from the public, as it receives no regular direct Government funding or National Lottery grants.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance fundraising manager Des Regan said: “It's been a really tough time for all charities as the pandemic forced us to cancel all fundraising events in 2020, costing us around £500,000 in income.

"That said, we have been taken aback by the response from the public and locally based businesses like Swindon’s Bus Company, who we can't thank enough for deciding to support our charity."

Sprucing up Swindon Croquet Club

Swindon Croquet Club members gathered to spruce up the clubhouse and equipment store with bright white paint.

A spokesman said: "It was definitely a case of ‘many hands make light work’ and, following successful completion of the project, Chairman Clive Smith joked that the Clubhouse can now be seen from outer space!"

Following relaxation of covid restrictions social play has restarted with league matches and club tournaments commencing in June.

The club is always keen to welcome new members and free trial sessions, with equipment and tuition provided, are available.

Thames Water employees have chosen Dementia UK as their new charity partner for the next two years.

Britain’s biggest water company announced the partnership in time for the charity’s national ‘Time for a Cuppa’ Week in early May. The charity will receive donations collected via activities organised by Thames Water and mass participation events such as the London Marathon and the Thames Path Challenge.

The company’s staff recently raised more than £1.3m to improve access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene in Malawi.

Lights of hope for people with Motor Neurone Disease Greenbridge Roundabout will once again be lit with the colours of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Each year, MND Associations across the globe mark 21 June as a special day of recognition, acknowledging the impact that MND has on people around the world.

This date is selected as it marks a solstice seen by many as a turning point in the year, the start of a new season of hope.

MND Associations around the world undertake a range of activities to express their hope that this day will be another turning point in the search for cause, treatment and cure of MND. A spokesperson said: "Many iconic buildings and bridges will be lit in the Association’s colours. In Swindon the North Wiltshire Group, who have supported local people with MND and their families for

the past 33 years, have arranged for the Greenbridge Roundabout lights to be in the recognisable colours of blue and orange too."

The roundabout was also lit in the organisation's colours in 2019.

MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, and attacks the nerves that control movement so muscles no longer work.

It can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk and eventually breathe,

and more than 80 percent of people with MND will have communication difficulties, including for some a complete loss of their voice.

A person’s lifetime risk of developing MND is around 1 in 300, and six people per day are diagnosed with MND in the UK. The illness, for which there is currently no cure, kills nearly 2,200 people in the UK every year.

Swindon’s Steam Museum reopens with two new special exhibitions Steam – the Museum of the Great Western Railway reopens its doors to the public on Thursday 27 May. The Swindon Borough Council-owned and operated museum has achieved the UK-recognised ‘Good to Go’ certification and safety measures have been put in place, including enhanced cleaning, reduced overall capacities, one-way systems, and plenty of hand sanitiser stations. As per government guidelines, visitors will need to wear a face covering, unless exempt, and will be requested to respect social distancing measures.

All visitors will be required to book a timed slot in advance via the Steam Museum website.

Once on site, visitors are welcome to stay as long as they wish until closing time.

In addition to Steam’s award-winning permanent displays and galleries, the

museum will also be launching two new special exhibitions when its doors reopen. ‘GWR Shipping’ explores the history of the company’s ships at sea, including the important role which the GWR played in the evacuation of Dunkirk during the Second World War. ‘Through the Window’ showcases stunning artworks from Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, alongside travel posters from Steam’s collections.

Let's make the most of Old Town

Hopefully, by the time you read this the weather will be warmer and we will be making the most of our outdoor spaces.

All through the pandemic residents in Old Town have been taking advantage of the facilities in the wonderful Town Gardens and this spring they have looked truly magnificent with the blossom on the trees and the colourful beds.

Over the Easter weekend the Rotary Club took over the café and made over £3,000 for the Brighter Futures appeal, before the café underwent much needed repairs and refurbishment. It is now open commercially again.

The Town Gardens have to be one of the gems of Old Town, because they form an oasis of colour and greenery in the middle of a fairly densely populated urban residential area, but we are currently discussing other ways to make the whole area more attractive and to create positivity. The small, scattered garden areas

are part of this, having been transformed from neglected overgrown patches into interesting and attractive little gardens, but we would like to extend the idea to perhaps make some of the rich history of the area more accessible.

One way of doing this might be to incorporate some of the sites of interest, particularly on the Lawns, into a new app which is being developed to support the Green Corridor stretching from Shaftesbury Lake through Coate Water to Wichelstowe and beyond. We welcome any other suggestions on the Old Town Residents Facebook page.

Residents in the streets of terraced housing in Old Town have for many years had parking issues and recently the residents of the Croft area, including St Margaret’s Road, Winifred and Evelyn Streets, have been consulted on a Road Traffic Order (RTO) that proposes changes to the double yellow lines, enabling more night-time and weekend parking on some corner areas, where this can be achieved

safely. Many residents have asked for this to be extended to Bank Holidays as well.

From the end of April we have welcomed some new people to the Wednesday morning gardening group.

This has enabled us to achieve more each week, especially at this time of year, when we are putting in new plants and tidying up the beds. This is a

Wiltshire-wide Dog Watch scheme launched

A new Dog Watch scheme has been set up by Wiltshire Police to help reassure owners regarding the safety of their pets.

Over the past few months there has been a rising perception and concern that more dog thefts and attempted dog thefts are taking place across the country. This has primarily been driven by social media comments and reports.

As a result, the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners, supported by forces across the country, carried out a national survey on dog thefts in March this year.

Wiltshire, so far in 2021, officers haven’t received any reports of dogs being physically stolen. However, they have received reports of a handful of attempted dog thefts which we are investigating.

The Dog Watch scheme will be driven through our Community Messaging site.

Wiltshire Police's Assistant Chief Constable Debs Smith said: "As a dog owner myself, I appreciate the concern and worry owners have around dog thefts.

"Despite there being no reported cases of thefts here in Wiltshire so far this year I can understand why the perception

is worse than the real picture.

"We are currently investigating reports of a handful of attempted dog thefts as well as being made aware, via social media, of some suspicious activity by some individuals around dogs.

"We do take this type of crime seriously and want to be proactive in helping dog owners protect their much loved pets - and so I welcome the setting up of Dog Watch.

"This scheme has two major benefits: it helps with the sharing of information amongst a dog loving community and also helps us, the police, build up an intelligence picture of potential issues in a particular

Sheltered housing residents fearful after warden service changes Residents of a Swindon sheltered housing complex say borough council cuts to full-time warden provision threaten their health and wellbeing.

The senior citizens who live at Charles Macpherson Gardens in Eldene are demanding the policy, which means their warden must cover other complexes, be reversed.

They have begun a Facebook page to recruit residents of other complexes to the cause.

The council insists that key components of the service remain, but this is rejected by the residents.

One of the most vocal protesters is Francis Smith, whio has lived at Charles Macpherson Gardens for more than a decade.

Mr Smith, a wheelchair user, said: "All of the 32 sites had a live-in warden at one point.

"The council have been getting rid of them quietly. The live-in warden - the council is saying it's difficult to retain them and that's why they've

made the change."

Residents are full of praise for their warden, and credit her with having helped them through issues ranging from health crises to an incident when an out-of-control car careered through a fence and struck the wall.

When the warden is not available, vulnerable residents can use personal emergency call buttons to alert the council's Homeline service and summon help, but say this is still inferior to having a warden permanently on site.

Mr Smith said: "The council is saying that a telephone call and a lanyard will help, but the reality is that when a car crashed into our fence and hit the wall, the warden who lives on site was here within minutes and the police, fire and ambulance within 10 or 20 minutes, so the warden being on site, although they're not paid for 24-hour coverage, it is 24 hour coverage.

"That's what I was used to."

The residents' Facebook group is called Charles Mac Fighting Back, and is open to

all.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: "The key components of the service remain, such as daily weekday calls, emergency cover when staff are not on site, health safety checks, etc.

“Prior to the implementation of the review officers visited every sheltered housing scheme, collating feedback and have updated our tenants consultative group TASH about the progress of the review.

“It has been agreed that TASH and Tenants Security Panel will receive regular feedback and we have set up a process whereby we can be notified of specific concerns or enquires relating to the review.”

The spokesperson added: “We would never put residents in a less safe position and all our residents have access to our Homeline service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, when Sheltered Staff are not working in the building."

Grant helps adults with learning difficulties overcome covid fears A Swindon day resource centre for adults with learning difficulties is set to launch a new outreach programme.

The Open Door Centre has been awarded almost £11,800 from Wiltshire Community Foundation’s Coronavirus Response and Recovery Fund to cover the cost of an outreach worker.

The fund has distributed more than £1.5m through more than 300 grants. A £100,000 donation to the fund from the Oakfield housing development in Swindon, sponsored by Nationwide, was used for the Open Door Centre grant.

The centre, which meets at St Barnabas Church Hall in Gorse Hill, is eagerly waiting to see if all lockdown restrictions are lifted in late June.

The centre team are eager to welcome back every member five days a week.

Until then it is only allowed to have 21 of the 120 members on its books in for just a few

hours each day - but even that is a source of joy according to fundraiser Claire BouverieBrine.

She said: “I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to hear that those people feel they have got their lives back. It makes you appreciate how much they enjoy and rely on coming here.

“When we had to tell them we were closing due to the covid restrictions there were tears, despair and even anger because they found it difficult

to understand why they weren’t allowed to come.

"We were obviously concerned about how they were going to cope without coming every day so we began making regular phone calls and set up a hot meal service.”

The centre has been producing hot meals every day, even when the centre was closed, to either be delivered to members living on their own or made available as a takeaway.

“By doing that it has also helped us keep in touch with them to check on their wellbeing, answer any queries they might have or just give them some reassurance,” said Mrs Bouverie-Brine.

Once the centre is back to normal the outreach worker will target members who are worried about returning to the centre because many of them have been alarmed by covid.

"You have to tell them in a way that they can understand."

The outreach worker will be able to see people at home and help to deal with their fears.

The role will also involve supporting members who go out on work experience or into jobs by being there to assist with paperwork and make sure they settle in.

Public to play vital role in deciding fu

Landscape architects Cookson & Tickner have been appointed to prepare a Conservation Management Plan for the GWR Park on Faringdon Road.

Swindon Borough Council says the recent pandemic has highlighted how important parks and green spaces are to the people of Swindon.

One of the most popular parks over the past year has been the park on Faringdon Road, which was bought by the Great Western Railway in 1844 to provide a cricket pitch for its employees.

In the 1870s extensive formal flower beds and greenhouses were provided, and in 1904 it was estimated that 38,000 people managed to cram into the park for the annual Children’s Fete.

Cllr Dale Heenan, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration of Culture, Heritage and Leisure, said: "The GWR Park on Faringdon Road has played an

active role in the town centre's social and leisure life for over 170 years.

“Historic England and Swindon Borough Council are delivering the regeneration of the Railway Village, and my priority is the restoration of the Mechanics Institute, just a 60 second walk from GWR Park.

“Any person who has an interest in GWR Park should complete the survey so that Swindon Borough Council and the Parish Council can make this area the best that it can be."

The plan will identify ways

to preserve and enhance any remaining historical features and help tell GWR Park’s story to visitors.

Residents are being asked for their views on the park via the short survey so it can be preserved and enhanced for future generations.

Vice-Chair of South Swindon Parish Council, Janine Howarth, said: “Since South Swindon Parish Council took over the running of GWR Park they have made great progress beginning to care and restore it to its full potential.

“GWR Park is not only the oldest park in Swindon but its history is steeped in Swindon’s railway heritage and its people.

“We are therefore pleased to be working on this project to further develop the park by listening to you, the people, who use and care about the park, making it a great place for future generations to enjoy.”

Ipsum Youth develops creativity through therapeutic Music and Art, and is to receive £184,749 over

three years from the National Lottery Community Fund Thanks to the support of the National Lottery Community Fund, Ipsum intends to build upon the interventions already offered and increase opportunities for ages 11 years upwards.

Julie Mattinson, Ipsum Director, said: "We are excited to now be in a position to offer creative arts-based activities for those of our community’s younger generation struggling with their mental health.

"We want to make sure young people don’t miss out on creative arts opportunities because of who they are, where they live, their background or what they are going through.

"The project will allow IPSUM to reach more of our younger generation, giving the opportunity to access a well-equipped music studio, the chance to get involved and encouragement to find their creative side within digital audio workstation or create through the medium of art.

"At the core of our work is the belief that all ages should have access to safe ways to

express themselves, especially those from areas of social deprivation and poverty.

"These programmes embrace the power of music and art to engage children and young adults in learning music production, DJing or creating the art of their choice.

"We are finding this is a particularly effective way to reach troubled young people facing challenges relating to their mental health, lack of confidence, self-worth, and a wide range of social and environmental issues.

"It is an accessible route into creativity for many, and involves young people engaging in an art form they are familiar with and are fond of.

"The programme will also offer the opportunity to learn to play keyboard, bass guitar or drums.

"We are excited to introduce our new art therapist, who has a wealth of experience with young people and is looking forward to working with our younger generation.

"We will be offering

two evenings a week and Saturdays.

"The programmes will allow access for 50-plus young people a year.

"One in 10 young people will experience a mental health problem and, sadly, 90 percent of those young people will experience stigma and discrimination.

"Covid has impacted greatly on young people, increased feelings of Isolation and loneliness while away from their peers, self-harming, depression, low mood and self-esteem - which, as the

lockdown continues, we predict will continue to increase the need for our new services."

Sunshine Window Cleaning owner Lance Tucker has been involved in the industry for more than 15 years.

During that time he has seen his business go from strength to strength.

He recalled: "I stumbled across window cleaning back in October 2005, when I was working at Warm Space, doing cavity wall and loft insulation.

My girlfriend at the time knew I was looking for a change and spotted an ad in the paper.

"The guy who had the round took on me and another experienced cleaner - he already had one cleaner, so three helpers altogether.

"The other two moaned about

my speed and pay, as I was a complete beginner, so I left to start up my own round. I'd got the bug for it.

"I never even had my own ladders when I started, but drove to my brother's in Haydon Wick, my mum's in Cheney Manor and my grandma's in Ferndale Road to pick up their ladders, so I could service the work I had gained locally to them.

"I could see the potential straight away and went and bought the roofrack, ladders and all the equipment I needed after about the first week.

"I acquired the initial work from printing around 5,000 homemade leaflets and

delivering them myself, with the help of my mum, who likes keeping fit!"

The workload steadily grew as Lance made sure to keep up with the latest methods.

He said: "I was able to take on my first two franchisees in February 2015, joined Checkatrade and grew quite quickly again.

"The third franchisee, Louis, joined in August 2015.

"My sister-in-law took a franchise in August 2016, but unfortunately got carpal tunnel syndrome and had to stop.

Her franchise was taken over by new franchisee Darren in March 2017.

"Stuart joined in January

2019, shortly followed by Chris in October 2019.

"The latest franchisee, Tim, has started recently and is still under my guidance, where I demonstrate every aspect of running and operating their own franchise model.

"I still enjoy the cleaning side of things, so stay working side by side with them until they're fully competent. This can be for up to two months until they're fully competent. The result?

A bright future for Lance and Sunshine Window Cleaning."

Jasmine continued: “I did a lot of research into the flora and fauna that would work for our premises and looked at plants that would attract bees and butterflies. I also looked at other ways we could achieve our aim of substantially reducing our environmental impact.

“The insect hotel seemed like the perfect idea as it offers a sanctuary to beneficial insects, especially pollinators. It is the urban solution to a declining population of beneficial insects in human environments.

“The herb garden is an especially attractive part of the renovation. Not only does it mean the hospital is growing its own produce of herbs but it’s also our way of reducing the carbon footprint that would have otherwise risen driving to and from supermarkets, along with packaging.

“The management team at Eastcott has been extremely supportive throughout this project and we are really looking forward to the next phases of our business plan.

“Over the course of the next few months, we are hoping to install bird boxes and water baths that small animals can use. We are also hoping to have more seating areas around the garden which staff and patients can enjoy.”

Swindon-based Eastcott Veterinary Referrals has recently spruced up its garden premises and announced the opening of its very own insect hotel as part of the animal hospital’s ongoing biodiversity projects.

Eastcott’s dedicated ‘Green Team’ led the renovation project and have created a lovely green space to offer a welcome and cheering refuge not only to insects, but also a relaxing area for staff to enjoy their lunch.

The new design includes seating areas surrounded by bright and cheerful planting, a herbal garden and an ‘insect hotel’. The borders have been designed to complement the existing planting, while also increasing biodiversity on the site as part of their ongoing sustainability aims.

Jasmine Kilpatrick, Emergency and Critical Care Nurse at Eastcott, was the mastermind behind the project. She was responsible for drawing up plans, getting them approved and implementing the changes around the facility.

She said: “I’ve had personal struggles with mental health in the past and found that being outside and gardening really made a positive difference to my stress levels, anxiety and mental wellbeing.

“I wanted to share this experience with everyone at the hospital, particularly with those who don’t necessarily have a garden of their own to retreat to after a hard day’s labour.

“Our line of work can be quite strenuous and mentally draining, so it’s incredibly important to be able to take a few minutes every day to get some fresh air outside. Where else better to do that, than in our own front yard!”

Swindon welcomes the music back... finally Words by Jamie Hill

For Swindon's musicians it's been a hard ol' year what with not being able to play anywhere except for a sprinkle of socially distanced gigs between lockdowns.

So you can just imagine that the town's music scene is champing at the bit (or at least biting down on a drumstick) to get back in front of the crowds.

And for music fans it's also been a long wait to be able to lose themselves amongst the guitar chords and vocals of the very talented musical geniuses that this town has more than its fair share of.

Here's a couple of gigs that we're particularly looking forward to....

Will Gould from Creeper and Matt Reynolds of Howards Alia joined forces for the side project, and the Swindon appearance is part of a newly-announced tour.

They described their self titled debut EP as “spooky, silly, romantic punk rock songs” when it was released through Roadrunner in October of last year.

Renowned alternative folk act Wildwood Kin will head to Swindon for the final leg of their newlyannounced UK tour.

The powerhouse family trio, made up from sisters Beth and Emillie and their cousin Meghann, will be performing a headline show at Christ Church in Old Town on Saturday 25 September at 6.30pm.

Tour support is singer-songwriter JAKL plus more acts to be announced.

The gig launches a new festival brand, Swindon Folk & Blues Festival, which was due to hold its first festival this year but due to the pandemic has decided to organise the event for 2022 and until then host this concert.

Anne-Marie and Dizzee Rascal to headline Live at Lydiard

The organisers of the Live at Lydiard festival have announced the final line-up and it's a doozie.

Grime's grandmaster Dizzee Rascal has now joined the line-up as a headline act making the event a truly 'Bonkers' time.

Dizzee joins chart-topper and The Voice judge Anne-Marie as well as a Clean Bandit DJ set as the headliners, while other major draws include Pete Tong, Joel Corry, Sean Kingston, Mistajam and Arielle Free.

Swindon has some great characters. One of them is my friend, Swindon’s pop-up poet, Tony Hillier.

Tony’s been Swindon’s Community Poet since he devised the role himself in 2010. You couldn’t make it up.

You’ll see Tony, usually with a funny hat, chittering around the periphery of every event in the town. One minute he’s keenly listening, another making notes, and another stirring up enthusiasm for rallies. He has a considered opinion on every local issue and is active on campaigns, multiples of them over the years.

I’ve written in this column many times that poetry has to be accessible and at the same time have multiple levels that invite you back for a second and a third look. That’s how Tony writes.

MOTORING The Audi A3 has just celebrated its 25th birthday. Yep, it’s been around since 1996 which was when Audi decided that they should take on the VW Golf, and this model is the fourth generation. And like all Audi models the A3 is another top of the class winner.

Prices start around £25,000 and you can get either a five door sportback or four door saloon with four equipment levels.

There is both petrol and diesel available - the petrol is a 1.0-litre unit with 109bhp and a 1.5-litre engine with 148bhp. The 2.0-litre diesel powerplant has two separate power outputs - the 30 TDI with 114bhp and the 35 TDI producing 148bhp.

speed manual gearbox as standard, the powerful types have the sevenspeed S tronic box.

While I was lucky and and managed to get my hands on the A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e S line S tronic.

This is the start of the electric tomorrow where the motoring future lies and naturally Audi are right at

the front of the queue.

This plug in hybrid is not a cheap car and prices start at £35,000.

The engine is a 1.4-litre 4cyl plus e-motor with power/torque at 201bhp/350Nm. It’s front wheel drive with a six speed dual clutch auto box and power to die for.

Top speed is 140mph, 0-62mph in just over seven

seconds and you easily get 50 miles to the gallon.

This can give you a top 200mpg if you use the electric system properly, and 37 miles to the gallon using just the electric alone.

You can top up the car’s 13kWh battery with a wallbox in around four hours so an overnight session is easy peasy.

And on taxation you are in the 12 per cent tax band. An electric-only mileage is eight per cent.

The A3 pulls away in EV mode by default and up to 30mph means quiet driving.

The motor’s ability to power torque when the engine is still getting up to speed makes for bags of punch.

And when you are just using petrol the A3 is one of the great smooth operators. The A3 handles like a dream.

Swindon Link's Jamie Hill headed to the Doubletree Hilton just off Junction 16 to find out about their food offering during the pandemic.

We are living in strange times. At the time of writing this pubs and restaurants could only offer tables outside due to the coronavirus guidelines. Obviously that has changed somewhat now with restricted dining allowed inside again.

But this pandemic has made finding somewhere to eat a minefield of trying to book in advance, when everyone has had the same idea, or just showing up with your fingers crossed. Do you feel lucky?

My partner and I were lucky to discover the 14Twelve Brasserie at the Doubletree Hilton, just off Great Western Way next to the M4's Junction 26

As a hotel during lockdown it was only open to essential workers but opened its doors fully when the guidelines changed on 17 May. But for that pre-May 17 period when I visited I was welcomed by a lovely sun terrace as part of its 14Twelve Brasserie to tempt any lockdown weary foodies across its threshold.

First of all, I would like to say that as far as covidsafety is concerned, everyting possible has been done to ensure customers feel safe with one-way systems and the tables nicely spaced out.

We arrived on a very sunny Friday lunchtime and were welcomed by the very friendly staff.

Sitting in the sun on the new terrace, which is very elegantly done, it was

definitely an escape from the rigours of another lockdown lunchtime. We were also told that the terrace would soon have state-of-the-art canopies installed with heaters.

The lunchtime menu was perfect, offering a selection of bloomers, wraps, salads and a delicious looking burger. The evening menu offers an even greater selection with everything from sea bass to pizzas.

I opted for a cheese and ham toastie. I love my cheese and ham toasties as they have become a bit of a simple lockdown treat. I've got to say, I wasn't disappointed as it was cooked just right. It was accompanied by some really good home-made slaw and tasty chips.

My partner, who is a coeliac, was really pleased to find out

that all of the bloomers and wraps on offer were able to be prepared using glutenfree ingredients. She went for a chicken bloomer and waxed lyrical about how tasty it was with every bite.

Overall our lunch was fab and we couldn't fault the service, the food or anything.

The 14Twelve Brasserie is definitely a spot worth discovering and we will definitely be heading there again very soon.

Deaf cat saved from going blind by Swindon vets

The future is looking bright for a cat who recently received sightsaving surgery from a leading ophthalmologist at Swindonbased Eastcott Veterinary Referrals.

Owners James Dickenson and Jo Brydon adopted Kafka in July 2020 when she was just three months old and diagnosed with cerebellar hypoplasia, an incurable neurological condition that causes her head and body to involuntarily twitch.

Not long after this, her vets and carers also noticed Kafka was deaf.

Her physical differences meant that Kafka’s owners communicated with her through sign language, so when they noticed a white mistiness in her eyes at the start of this year they were naturally concerned.

James said: “Kafka has always been a very happy, loving and personable cat, right from when she was born. Despite her physical differences, she has always enjoyed jumping and bouncing about everywhere and she really loves being outdoors with us.

“Her understanding of sign language has come leaps and bounds since she was born and she often treats us to some lovely tricks, knows the sign for food and comes running when you call her.

“They even told us when Kafka was being anaesthetised, so we weren’t worried about how long she was in the operating theatre for.

“At the start of this year, however, we noticed a few changes in her behaviour and also noticed there was a kind of white mistiness right in the middle of both her pupils, which seemed to be compromising her ability to follow our sign language. A trip to the local vet informed us that she may have cataracts in both eyes.

“The aftercare has been fantastic as well. Not only were we given detailed instructions on how to administer the drops she needed and the dos and don’ts regarding her aftercare, but we are seen very regularly by the surgeon who looked after her case, Ida Gilbert, for follow-up appointments.”

“We were referred to Eastcott Veterinary Referrals, in Swindon, and got an appointment to be seen quite quickly. Due to restrictions, we were asked to stay outside the hospital and the ophthalmologist did a phone consultation with us, after which they came out and took Kafka in for her examination.

Ida Gilbert, head of ophthalmology at Eastcott, which is part of Linnaeus, said: “We always recommend that cataracts are seen quickly so they can be managed appropriately with antiinflammatory medication and scheduled for surgery as soon as possible. Ignoring cataracts can lead to inflammation of the eye (uveitis) which can eventually lead to glaucoma and retinal detachment and in some cases may become inoperable.

“We were invited in at a social distance and the veterinary team informed us Kafka needed double cataract surgery in order to avoid completely losing her vision due to progressive cataracts.”

James gave a glowing review of the expert team, who explained all the details of the procedure that was needed and provided an excellent level of care to Kafka.

James said: “We went away and came back about a month after raising the money we needed for the surgery with the help from Battersea, the animal charity we adopted her from. The team at Eastcott were exceptional and kept us informed and assured at every stage of the entire process.

“When Kafka came to us, she was not fully blind, but had progressive cataracts in her central axis, therefore reducing her vision quite significantly.

“The surgery was a massive success and Kafka came out with flying colours. All her follow-up appointments have gone very well and we are over the moon that we were able to save the sight of yet another adorable kitten.”

I love helping people discover (or re-discover) the wonderful freedom of cycling. This month I thought I’d share the story of Nadia, a lovely lady who I met through my role as a volunteer ride leader.

Nadia hadn’t cycled for decades, not since she was a child. She had dabbled in bike riding again after a friend donated her daughter’s bike to explore a local country lane. Unbeknown to her at the time, the bike was too small and caused her knees to hurt – a pretty common problem.

Eventually she was gifted a bike that was a much better fit, a trusty Claud Butler hybrid.

But, while still nervous of traffic and lacking confidence, Nadia was cautious of exploring further a field and the bike

SPORT The 2020/21 season won't make pretty reading for all Swindon fans. Relegated with a measly 43 points, the most goals conceded in the football league, managerless and court battles over ownership. The club is in utter disarray. But who is to blame for this mess?

Most people will be quick to point the finger at club owner Lee Power. Power, who has owned the club since 2013, has often been unpopular among fans.

However, after providing funding for last season's success, many fans including myself believed that he had learned from previous mistakes and was now a better chairman. But this season Power didn't invest in the squad during the transfer window which arguably led to Town's downfall this season.

After achieving promotion it 28

was consigned to the shed.

A few years later she made a reluctant move to Swindon to support her husband’s job relocation as well as to help care for elderly relatives. She was choked to move to the town, which she viewed as industrial and uninviting.

Desperate for some freedom and time for herself, she started walking and running after noticing a nice path behind their new house. Very soon she discovered that the area had quite a few cycle paths which reignited her interest to explore and to dust off her neglected bike. With a little searching, she found the Let’s Ride programme of free guided rides and plucked up the confidence to join me on a guided ride from Oasis to Lydiard Park. She describes this ride as a real turning point.

On our ride, Nadia discovered a whole new side to Swindon, full of green nature corridors which she never knew existed. She remembers thinking, “Oh my goodness, this is what I’ve been looking for."

Overwhelmed with the kindness and support of the ride leaders, she was soon a regular on rides. The leaders shared their knowledge and helped to nurture her love of cycling, build her confidence, and teach her everything from signalling to changing inner tubes. In her own words: “Cycling has been a real saviour for me. Riding a bike makes me happy and gives me such a wonderful sense of freedom and independence. I love nature and enjoy walking, but I don’t always feel safe walking alone as a woman.

STFC - the post-mortem was a prime time to invest in the squad and look at giving league 1 a real go this season.

Instead of going out and recruiting a really solid squad, in my opinion barring one or two exceptions Town brought in league 2 standard players.

As well as a poor transfer window Power has also found himself in court regarding the ownership of the club. It's all a bit of a mess with no one really understanding what deals have been done behind closed doors.

This has undoubtedly left a scar on the club financially and it's also proven to be the final nail in the coffin of the relationship between the Town fans and Lee Power. Hopefully Power will sell the club soon and allow a fresh face to take over the club. Because in my opinion it's the only way for the club to move forward.

With a fresh face the club can rebuild and start again and most importantly engage with the fan base and get them on board with the club.

Although it can be argued that the players who were recruited weren't good enough, you can still make a firm case to lay the blame on the playing and coaching staff.

At times under John Sheridan it seemed that some players just weren't trying and there was no cohesion among the team. It really did appear to be an unhappy camp. The tactics were also baffling at times and towards the end of the season it was just a case of relying on moments of magic from Scott Twine and Jack Payne. Perhaps with a better manager who could get the best out of the players and tactically organise the team, the Robins might have survived.

Cycling feels safer and it really lifts my spirits.”

Despite this dreadful season one player really stood out.

That player was Jack Payne.

The 26 year old has four goals and six assists to his name this season and at times he was the only man trying for Town. He worked hard every game and single handedly tried to fight relegation with some spectacular strikes and admirable performances.

The attacking midfielder featured the most out of any player for Swindon this season and it's no wonder considering what a hard worker he is.

Should he not be poached by a team in a higher division Payne will be an indispensable member of next year's team.

He could definitely be the best player in the division.
