The weather has definitely turned colder as we head into the festive season.

In this edition we have an interview with Michael Keenan, the head of Threshold Housing, who has put his annual call out for us to remember the homeless this Christmas season.

This year the impact will be even more severe as so many people have been struggling with the never-ending cost of living crisis.

The annual Threshold Big Sleepout has been postponed from early December to 8 March next year.

For us at Swindon Link it has definitely been a busy year especially with the launch of our sister publication The Ink. The paid-for news subscription service specialises in long-form journalism and goes out four days a week to our subscribers.

A very special birthday cake lit up the faces of some very important guests at a party to mark the 175th anniversary of the birth of Swindon nature writer Richard Jefferies.

The mammoth task of blowing out all the candles fell to two actual descendants of the Victorian author, greatgranddaughter Lucille Kelleher and great-great-grandson Ken Taylor, both over from Canada specially for the occasion.

They were joined in the celebrations by Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire Mrs Sarah Rose Troughton, Swindon Mayor Cllr Barbara Parry, SBC Lead Member for Culture, Cllr Marina Strinkovsky and a large crowd of friends of the Richard Jefferies Museum, volunteers and well-wishers.

As a bonus, there were even two guests called Bevis, named after one of Jefferies’ most famous characters. Bevis

Watts, CEO of Triodos Bank, and fundraiser Bevis Gillett both travelled from Bristol to celebrate the creator of their namesake, and meet his descendants.

With the special guests, a barbecue in the garden, classical music from trio Musicalitea, a poem from community poet Tony Hillier, and of course the spectacle of 175 candles, Cllr Strinkovsky declared the party “...a roaring success”.

Supporter of the museum Royston Cartright said: “What a night we all had, so many friends new and old turned up.

All to celebrate the world’s first and still the greatest nature conservationist who is known throughout the world. A huge thank you to everyone that came but most importantly to the volunteers who make this museum a living breathing community every week of the year.”

The event marked the end of six months of activities to commemorate the anniversary, with much of the year devoted to a 175 mile ‘nature trail’ from Swindon to Worthing, via London, joining all the places where Jefferies lived, plus the cemetery where he is buried.

Over the months, hundreds of people have walked, cycled or run parts of the route, looking at the nature as they went, and helping to raise over £5,000 towards plans for a new visitor centre at the museum.

Council faces difficult decisions on services Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet will face some difficult decisions when it meets to review budget proposals for the next financial year (202425) at its next meeting on 13 December.

Last month (15 Nov), councillors met to discuss a provisional £16.4m budget gap for 2024-25. Details of draft savings proposals will be published on 5 December ahead of the meeting.

As councils across the country look to set their budgets for next year, the Local Government Association (LGA) has said that 'the financial resilience of the sector is low' following a long-term reduction in council funding.

The proportion of central Government funding that makes up the council’s day-to-

day budget has fallen from 29% in 2013/14 to 3% in 2023/24. In a submission last month to the Chancellor ahead of the Autumn Statement, the LGA warned: “The ‘easy wins’ and ‘low hanging fruit’ in terms of savings have long since gone. Instead, councils are almost immediately faced with hard decisions about cutting valued services, along with increasing council tax and fees and charges during a cost-ofliving crisis.”

Ongoing inflation and demand pressures combined with market issues in specific sectors such as children’s and adult social care mean that costs are outstripping available resources. The council is already taking action to balance the books in 2023/24.

Ways to save energy and money this winter

Eligible children invited to book four free activities over the Christmas holidays

With the chill of winter in the air, many residents may be worried about the cost of having the heating on.

SBC has put together a free energy-saving guide that covers heating, lighting, appliances, and more. Tips include: • Using energy-saving light bulbs, which last up to 10 times longer than the old incandescent bulbs, could save around £55 over the life of the bulb • Taking a shower instead of a bath, which will save money as there is much less water to heat. If you don’t have a shower installed try using a mixer unit that attaches to your bath taps • Lowering your combi boiler’s flow temperature could save up to 5% of your gas use and turning off your boiler’s pre-heat setting could save another 10% • Washing clothes at 30°C uses less electricity than higher temperatures For the full guide, search ‘Energy Saving’ on the council’s website.

When schools break up for the Christmas holidays, some children will struggle with loneliness, poor diets and inactivity. To tackle these issues, the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme was introduced by the Government, a scheme which runs across major school holidays.

Thousands of children in Swindon are eligible to take part in this programme, which also provides them with a healthy hot meal each day. Children can get involved in activities such as cheerleading, fencing, football and arts and crafts, to keep their minds and bodies busy during the break. But most importantly, the HAF programme lets them have fun, giving them the opportunity to make new friends in their local community.

Those who are eligible include children in receipt of

Laila, aged 13, was one of the children who enjoyed cheerleading at Swindon Lightning Cheerleading Club throughout the summer holidays. She said: “My mum signed me up for the summer camp at Swindon Lightning Cheerleading Club which meant I could try cheerleading, which is a sport I had never done before."

To find out if your child is eligible, then search ‘HAF’ on the council’s website. Parents should also check emails for the electronic vouchers from their child’s school.

Councils across the country have spent the past decade managing a drastic reduction in central government funding, but that challenge is getting harder and harder. Particularly with the ongoing impact of inflation and growing demand for Adults' and Children’s services, which accounts for around 80% of the council’s total budget.”

This Christmas, be sure to plan your shopping and think about what you’re going to eat so you waste as little as possible.

You can also set your fridge to 5°C or colder to make food last longer.

Food waste collections were due to be rolled out to households across Swindon from 27 November, which also brought in other changes to how the council collects waste and recycling. Special gathering to mark Swindon Link's 45th anniversary Swindon Link founder editor Roger Ogle delivered a talk to mark the magazine's 45th birthday.

The well-attended gathering, upstairs at The Hop Inn, was the first of a series of quarterly community events planned

by Swindon Ink, the curated community subscription news service delivered by the same team of experienced journalists as The Link.

Roger, who remained in charge of the Link until the middle of the last decade, talked the audience through the early years of the publication, which was founded as a community news source for the then-new West Swindon development in 1978.

Current Link and Ink editor and publisher Jamie Hill introduced Roger, whose detailed talk was greeted with enthusiastic applause.

Jamie told the audience afterwards: "I have never met such an inspirational,

passionate, campaigning journalist as Roger.

"He is someone who cares so deeply about the community he works in. He has affected so many lives."

Jamie noted that even now he encountered people who remembered having been featured years ago in the

magazine, some of them as children.

Roger's talk covered a wealth of subjects, ranging from Royal visits to the early history of the Western and Northern expansions of Swindon, and from the changing face of local politics to campaigns to save beloved local amenities such as

Shaw Forest Park.

Roger's latest project is a book called West Swindon - What the Eye Doesn't See, written with fellow local history experts Angela Atkinson and Frances Bevan.

Book launch marks Swindon Hub birthday

The launch of a special book helped to mark the second anniversary of the Swindon Hub community space.

'Words From the Hub' is the title of a new anthology featuring work by members of the venue's Creative Writing Group.

It was launched as Swindon Hub celebrated its second anniversary.

Based in The Parade, the Hub is home to a variety of local groups as well as offering visitors an affordable cafe, a community bookshop, items for sale from local retailers, upcycled furniture from Renew Men's Shed and surplus stock items donated by shops, with profits going to Swindon Night Shelter.

launch was attended by contributors along with Hub volunteers and guests including Deputy Mayor Cllr Imtiyaz Shaikh, Swindon Borough Council Cabinet Member for Heritage, Art and Culture Cllr Marina Strinkovsky, Artswords' Matt Holland and community poet Tony Hillier.

The Deputy Mayor said of the Hub and the writing group: "It's amazing, it's beautiful. How

they are encouraging people to come forward and helping to support them to write their heart out, and putting that into a book, is fantastic."

Artswords, an offshoot of the Swindon Festival of Literature of which Matt Holland was organiser for many years, is a strong supporter of the Hub. Mr Holland said: "My words spoken here will disappear like smoke in the wind, but one

thing about the written word is that it's immortalised."

He added that a century from now, people would be able to read the book and know what was going on in the town when it was put together.

Cllr Strinkovsky described the occasion, the book and the Hub itself as awesome. She praised the Hub, which began in the shadow of the pandemic, saying: "One of the few good things that comes from adversity is creativity."

The launch ended with a fundraising auction of a copy of Words From the Hub which had been signed by contributors and Hub personnel.

The winning £80 bid for the book - usually priced at £3 - came from James Davies, partner of contributor and fellow bidder Julie Lang.

Both praised the creative writing group and the Hub for its crucial role in the community, as did many other Hub users who shared the celebration.

Thousands of pounds raised in tribute after death of Bob the beloved Taw Hill cat

By Amanda Wilkins amanda@swindonlink.com A wave of sadness swept Taw Hill with the announcement that much-loved community mascot Bob the cat had died.

The friendly animal had been a familiar and welcome part of the Swindon neighbourhood's daily life for almost two decades, famously patrolling the shops and bringing cheer to local people.

He even had his own Facebook presence, Bob Life, with 3,000 followers from all over the world.

His countless local fans would share photographs and report on their encounters with the friendly cat.

Bob was even immortalised in wool as a post box topper.

He had been unwell for some time but chose to spend his final days at Taw Hill Village

Centre, where he was looked after by shop staff and customers.

On 4 November his death was announced by owner Claire Edwards, who wrote

on Facebook: "I am deeply saddened to share the news that we lost our beautiful Bob today. We are incredibly upset but also know that there will be many people who took Bob

to their hearts that will also miss him greatly. I would like to thank everyone, who over the years, have cared and loved Bob and have looked after him and for all of your comments, messages and photos. Fly high Bobby."

Many of those who responded said Bob deserved a statue or other permanent memorial, and Claire announced a fundraising appeal with a £250 target.

Within days, it had reached more than 10 times that amount, and there may also be a book about Bob. Tributes poured in from hundreds of people who shared pictures and fond memories of Bob. One wrote "Rarely can a little cat mean so much to so many a true legend."

Another wrote of him as a sort of honorary sheriff.

I really enjoyed the tree switch on events, and I hope everyone who attended did too. It was pleasing to see the various communities across South Swindon come together for these events. Thank you to the local community groups and choirs who helped put these events on and performed so well.

Community Defibrillators Six new community defibrillators have been placed across the parish. These lifesaving devices are placed at the Town Gardens, Queen's Park, GWR Park, Broadgreen Community Centre, Badbury Park Community Centre, and Lawn Community Centre. The safety and wellbeing of our residents is one of our top

priorities as a parish council, so the installation of these devices goes a long way to safeguarding our residents should an incident occur.

wins Swindon firm's Christmas card design competition

Swindon firm AMS accountancy has announced the 2023 winner of its annual Christmas card design competition.

The young artist is Lydia Keogh, a Year 6 pupil at Lawn Primary school, whose design is titled Christmas Celebration.

Lydia won a £25 Amazon voucher and AMS donated £250 to the school.

An AMS spokesperson said: "Thank you to Emma Jelley, Deputy Head Teacher, for allowing us to run this competition again this year."

The boys' football team from Highworth Warneford School had an unforgettable trip to FC Bayern Munich.

It saw 50 boys and six staff members stay in the Olympic Park region of Munich and participate in four training sessions with Bayern coaches.

Three of the sessions took place at Säbener Straße, the first team training ground. On the first day, the boys trained on a pitch alongside the first team, who were preparing for their game the following day.

Harry Kane was even spotted on the pitch.

The other training session took place at the Bayern Munich Campus, the home of the club’s academy.

In addition to the training sessions, the boys also had the opportunity to watch two professional fixtures: Bayern Munich's second team against Eintracht Bamberg (Bayern won

6-3) and RB Salzburg against LASK (LASK won 1-0). As the Bayern first team were playing away, the boys travelled to Austria to see a top class professional fixture at the Red Bull Arena.

The boys also played three fixtures against German sides, all held at the first team training ground. The U13s won 6-3 against Interkulturale, the U14s won 7-1 against Interkulturale, and the U16s lost 4-0 to the Bayern Munich Global Academy.

Despite the loss, the U16s' performance was particularly impressive, as their opponents

were a year older and consisted of boys who had been scouted from all over the world.

The boys also had the opportunity to tour the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich's home ground, and visit the museum, which is full of the many trophies Bayern have won over the years.

The trip to FC Bayern Munich was a rare experience which helped to develop the boys' teamwork and communication skills as well as leaving the young footballers with memories to last them a lifetime.

Keep warm with Welcome Spaces Residents can keep warm, meet others in the community and find advice in one of Swindon’s many Welcome Spaces.

Toothill Church opened as a Welcome Space last winter.

Those visiting can come in and enjoy drinks as well as soup and a light lunch. They can chat, complete a jigsaw, read a newspaper, take part in a craft activity or just sit and be.

This Space was established in co-operation with other Welcome Spaces hosted in Gateway Church, Holy Trinity Shaw Church and Freshbrook Church. This means from Monday to Friday, there is always a Space open in West Swindon.

Swindon Borough Council has around 40 Welcome Spaces across Swindon for residents to visit or spend time meeting other people, feeling safe, and find warmth in cold weather. These spaces are open to anyone. Visitors won’t be asked why they are there and won’t have to take part in any activities if they don’t wish to. A charity night at Bengal Square in Peatmoor on 30 October managed to raise £447 for Prospect Hospice.

The restaurant is offering good causes the ability to use the venue on Monday and Tuesday evenings, giving organisers the opportunity of a value for money set menu and the ability to sell tickets to the event.

Swindon's newest secondary school branded 'inadequate' by Ofsted The Deanery CE Academy in Wichelstowe has been judged to be 'inadequate' in an Ofsted inspection which was carried out in September.

Following the inspection the Chief Inspector of Ofsted said: "This school requires special measures because it is failing to give its pupils an acceptable standard of education and the persons responsible for leading, managing or governing the school are not demonstrating the capacity to secure the necessary improvement in the school."

At the time of the school's first ever inspection Dan Neal was the head teacher but he has since resigned, meaning the school has now had four headteachers since it opened five years ago in 2019. The interim headteacher is now Kelly Osborne-James.

The report said: "Pupils at this school do not receive an acceptable standard of education. Gaps in the curriculum and frequent staff

changes mean that pupils do not learn well enough over time.

Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) do not have their needs understood and met.

"Parents and carers do not feel listened to and communicated with. This has led to a feeling of mistrust and being ‘let down’ by the school.

The trust has an overgenerous view of the school’s strengths and weaknesses. This means that not enough has been done quickly enough for the school to

improve.

"Cover staff and nonspecialists teach a high proportion of the lessons in this school. When pupils are not taught by the same person over a series of lessons, content is sometimes repeated or missed.

"The school does not accurately understand the needs of pupils with SEND. This means that teachers cannot provide the adaptations that pupils need order to learn."

The Deanery has been approached for comment.

People have their say on future of Swindon’s heritage Swindon people were invited to attend a special public event aiming to start a borough-wide engagement on heritage.

The ‘Swindon’s heritage: Celebrating the past, investing in the future’ event featured inspirational guest speakers and dived into the history of the town and what the future may hold for it. The event was held at UTC in the Carriage Works on Monday, 27 November.

Attendees got the chance to learn about the history of Swindon’s landmarks including the Town Gardens, the Mechanics’ Institute and the Health Hydro, shared their thoughts on how they wanted these key sites used in the future and found out how they could become actively involved.

Cllr Marina Strinkovsky, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Heritage, Art and Culture, said: “This is an important event that showcases our commitment to working

collaboratively with residents and being a listening council.

"Wide participation will help us kick-start the process of making positive plans for our heritage sites and buildings.

“We have so many places in Swindon that hold a special place in the hearts of people, and we want to have conversations with residents to understand where we need to be prioritising our efforts when it comes to heritage."

The council is already progressing with the ambitious

regeneration projects of two key heritage sites in the Railway Village – the Health Hydro and the Carriage Works. The next phase in the engagement exercise will be a survey asking residents more detailed questions about the heritage assets in the town and how they feel about them.

The data from this survey, the live event and the questions asked as part of the Resident Survey earlier this autumn will inform a Heritage Action Plan for Swindon.

They are proud to be 95% paper free, having made a number of changes to their operations and in the last few months, they have begun planting a tree for every funeral conducted, which adds up to between 700 and 800 per year.

Its services and resources range from more than 80 beds in 18 addresses to an outreach service whose missions include identifying and supporting rough sleepers, helping people to retain their accommodation, signposting people to other agencies and supporting people needing to access state benefits, medical care, drug and alcohol services and mental health services.

Both men strongly dispute recent official figures suggesting Swindon has only a handful of rough sleepers, and say that the sheer scale of homelessness generally is grossly underestimated by the public at large.

Jason explained: "My team will see around 12 to 15 unique individuals in the week at the moment, and that's only because we're not spending as much time on the streets we're not funded to do street outreach, but it's something that

The team spends a significant amount of its time in car parks late at night, where homeless people often seek refuge and leave before the public begin to arrive in the morning, unaware.

Jason added: "We've got tents up at the back of Tesco; we've got tents up in the Lawns.

"The emergence of numbers, and certainly the calling and the buzzing of our door, is back to pre-pandemic times. The numbers are increasing and the stories are horrendous."

Part of that, certainly in Swindon, is down to the sheer cost of securing accommodation, with the availability of social housing hugely limited and even a basic single person's basement flat in the private sector coming in at about £700 a month. Even if a person is able to afford such a sum, the chances are that they will be obliged to come up with a deposit amounting to a similar sum or more.

Both Michael and Jason can list an additional litany of factors they say make things worse for homeless people and those at risk of homelessness or trying to avoid lapsing back into homelessness.

Changes in benefit rules, funding allocations - or the lack of them - to local authorities and national and local government initiatives which have already been tried and failed are prominent on the list.

Their message to those in authority? Jason put it simply: "I would like to see a genuine engagement with the Third Sector."

With a fully equipped animal hospital and six local branches across Swindon, including Marlborough and Wootton Bassett, the team at Drove care for beloved pets from Hamsters to Huskies, whether they require complex surgery or just a routine health check.

Veterinary services offered range from cold laser surgery to treat arthritis, to full MRI scans. Patients in need of dental treatment are also catered for and the team are always more than happy to provide owners some sound advice for keeping furry family members happy and healthy.

LINK POLITICS Our mission continues in spite of severe challenges A column by Swindon Borough Council Leader Cllr Jim Robbins December is a time of fun and celebration for many, but for councillors it also marks the first time that we must table the budget for the next municipal year at our Cabinet meeting.

Since 2010, austerity has meant that this isn’t a time for celebration as the Government has looked to reduce funding to local authorities and forced councils to cut services.

I know many people have a view that the public sector isn’t as dynamic or efficient as the private sector, but the sheer scale of the cuts that we have faced over the last 13 years have meant we are a much leaner organisation, and the cuts that we face this year will inevitably have an effect on our front-line services.

In 2010, Swindon Borough Council received almost £90m from the Government each year.

Now that is down to less than £35m despite a large rise in demand for the statutory services that we have to provide in adult social care and our children’s services.

Council tax-payers have taken on some of the brunt with the rate that you pay often rising by the full amount

allowed.

When the Labour group took control of the council in May, we were offered some support by the Local Government Association and asked to identify two areas where we thought we needed some help.

We immediately picked Children’s Services as we knew of the challenges that we had inherited as shown by the Inadequate Ofsted rating, and also asked for some support with our finances to ensure that the information we had was accurate and if there were any measures we could take to improve the situation.

As a result of this, we have just had a Peer Review of our finances carried out by an experienced team of experts who confirmed that we are facing unprecedented challenges, and gave me the unwelcome news that "...this is

The site will take many years to complete, but to succeed it is critical that employers are encouraged to take advantage of the site before looking at destroying more countryside for employment needs.

Our existing and future ‘Local Plans’ guide where all development should take place and there are already substantial (approved) allocations for tens of thousands of homes at New Eastern Villages, Kingsdown and Wichelstowe which will provide all the required housing for decades.

Therefore, at the council meeting on 23 November I submitted a motion, seconded by my colleague Cllr Vijay Manro, which asked the Labour administration to prioritise

development of brownfield sites, before greenfield.

We need the equivalent of a ‘greenbelt’ wrapped around our more rural communities (who have already accepted substantial housing allocations), so that they don’t disappear.

On housing development, it is important to set the tone, and Swindon Borough Councilowned sites such as the former Windmill Hill Primary School that have sat empty for over a decade should be actively promoted for housing (which would be welcomed by Freshbrook residents) before additional bites are taken from farmland around Blunsdon, Highworth, Wanborough and Wroughton.

I have continued to support getting the leisure facility refurbished and re-opened and the Conservative administration had agreed a deal with £15m coming from the sale of the land around the Oasis.

Now Labour have agreed a revised deal with only £6m coming back and the council’s own legal advisors saying that their decision would be unlawful.

At the time of writing, I believe Labour will ignore the advice and face future legal challenges – which may once again delay the re-opening of the Oasis, whilst also leaving the council in a much worse financial position than we had negotiated.

Gearing up for best Enchanted Gardens Light Trail yet

By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk South Swindon Parish Council has revealed more information about this year's Enchanted Gardens Light Trail at the Town Gardens.

From Friday 1 to Sunday 31 December, the trail promises to demonstrate Swindon’s creativity and love for the arts through graceful display of woodland lights and interactive illuminations.

The parish council has partnered with Friends of Old Town, who are organising wonderful food and drink vendors for visitors to the trail to sample.

Stockers, Mamas Desserts, Sugar Shack Bakery, The Tuppenny and Town Gardens Café will provide a variety of food, such as sandwiches, burgers and a selection of desserts.

In addition, there will be local entertainment throughout the event at the Town Gardens bandstand, with performers including Revolution Performing Arts, Commonweal School, Rhythmix Goa and SALOS. Members of Swindon Makerspace, a not-for-profit based in Cheney Manor, are collaborating on a design for a unique selfie spot in the bandstand area.

Matt Bentley of Swindon Makerspace said: "Several of our members joined together to make this project happen with skills across many of the disciplines we have at the Makerspace from wood work, metal work, laser cutting,

electronics and craft to name a few.”

The creative talent amongst South Swindon’s young people will be on full display in the Rose Garden, with their handcrafted lanterns exhibited above the flora. Students from Lethbridge, Croft, Lawn Primary, Holy Family, Badbury Park, as well as residents of Bow Court, have participated in half-term workshops created and facilitated by South Swindon Parish Council’s Youth Worker.

The workshops have focused on Swindon’s diverse community and the cultural celebrations that the local community engage in. Young people have been encouraged to decorate their lanterns in response to the question: "What do festive celebrations mean to you?"

Parish council youth worker Loreli Huntley said: “Over the past two weeks I have engaged with five schools and the youth club in the parish with lantern workshops for the Enchanted Garden Light Trail. The theme for the lanterns is ‘Festive Celebrations’ and children are asked to draw designs that they connect with around this festive time.

"There are designs around Christmas, Diwali, Hannukah and fireworks and all are very brightly coloured. The children were excited to take part in the activity and can’t wait to see their designs installed in the Rose Garden.”

It adds an agreeably unusual and homely aspect to the inside of a building whose exterior is unmistakably of the 21st century Visiting for lunch one day, some of our group (mostly me - there, I admit it) were so enthralled by a 1940s exercise book whose original owner had diligently filled it with the specifications of steam locomotives that we almost forgot to look at the menu.

We sat in four of many seats in the pub/restaurant which originally did years or more likely decades of service in

long-vanished cinemas.

I am pleased to report that the food more than did the place justice.

We dined the day before the menu was due to be changed, but so long as the same team is doing the cooking, it's a fair bet that the new range of dishes is every bit as good.

Poetry and profundity in the Garden of Dreams Maurice Spillane: Of Poetry Swindon

I wrote this column in the “Garden of Dreams” in Kathmandu, a glorious day during the Hindu festival of Dashain.

I’d come from 5,614m (18,400 feet), after completing the Annapurna Circuit, keen to transpose so many stories from memory to paper.

a glazed bun and barbecue mayonnaise, lettuce, cheese, pickles and fries, and was pronounced delicious, slightly spicy, juicy and an altogether good choice.

Chargrilled Steak Frites (£17.25) with Nduja butter came with watercress and arrived medium rare precisely as ordered.

The recipient said: "It was gorgeous - I loved the Nduja butter and the steak was cooked exactly as specified.

It was obviously done on a

proper griddle, and the chips were delicious."

The Nourish Salad Bowl (£13.25), suitable for vegetarians and vegans, featured a list of ingredients including avocado, roasted cauliflower, mixed grains, roasted squash, pickled red onions and other goodies, and was greeted with enthusiasm especially the red onions. The only - minor - quibble was that the pomegranate seeds listed as among the ingredients seemed to have gone awol.

Ham and Eggs (£13.45) had two perfectly prepared eggs, a generous pile of ham slices and a goodly helping of tangy piccalilli.

All in all, I would highly recommend a visit to Hall & Woodhouse Wichelstowe, which continued to live up to the public appreciation which greeted it on opening and has continued ever since.

At the summit, Thorung La, the world’s highest pass, the snowstorm abated. Dawn lit the several 8,000m summits, slowly unwrapping the mountains into magnificence.

so much from our guide Dashrath, and later from his daughter, Elina. The Nepalis put family first, with special attention to elders. Hindu, Buddhist and Christians are in harmony, keen to share their values. We six trekkers aged 62 to 74 mirrored them in looking out for each other, and we made it to the summit.

Avebury singers to give Christmas concert at Swindon church

A rich variety of carols from Tudor to contemporary is promised by Avebury Vocal Ensemble in its Christmas programme this year.

There will be two concerts, the first at Bath Road Methodist Church in Old Town on Saturday 16 December at 7pm and the second at St. Mary’s Church, Uffington, on Wednesday 20 December at 7pm.

An ensemble spokesperson said: "The centrepiece of the concert is the joyous Jubilate Deo, an eight-part setting

by Giovanni Gabrieli, one of the most influential Italian musicians of his time and who represented the culmination of the style of the Venetian School at the time of the shift from Renaissance to Baroque idioms.

"The 400th anniversary of William Byrd’s death will again be celebrated together with that of Patrick Hadley who

died on the 17 December, just 50 years ago, and there will also be some seasonal music from Bach to Britten.

"Old favourites will include In The Bleak Midwinter using the lovely setting by Harold Darke and the ever-popular In Dulci Jubilo in Robert Pearsall’s masterful and wonderfully

elaborate arrangement.

"At the other end of the spectrum, we will be singing music by local composer Robin Nelson and Norwegian composer and pianist Ola Gjeilo together with a sprinkling of the ever-popular John Rutter’s Christmas choral music.

"We are very pleased to have Joe Barber as our accompanist, who will play solo as well as accompanying the choir and there will, of course, be opportunities for audience participation."

Whats going on in Old Town? A new Facebook group helps you find out.

Three Old Town residents passionate about the area have taken over a Facebook group to spread the word about events in the area.

The group, now named 'Old Town Swindon Events', aims to help people find out what's happening in and around Old Town - from music and theatre performances and art exhibitions, to family and community activities, fundraisers, craft fairs, comedy nights and quizzes.

Event organisers can post to the group, and there will be regular 'What's On' lists to make it easy to find events at a glance.

The group already has nearly 1000 members, and the team involved are keen to reach many more. Old Town residents Caroline Davies-Khan, Amanda Kent and Karma Wall are behind the revamped group.

They said "We love the range of events in and around Old Town and think they are brilliant for creating community connections but friends sometimes tell us haven't heard what's on

until after the event has happened, and we hope that this group will help to change that."

Jamie Hill of Swindon Link/The Ink stepped forward with an offer to take over an existing group he started about 10 years ago.

Jamie said "I started the Swindon Theatre and Music Project in 2013 to spread the word about cultural events in Swindon and created the group at that time. I'm pleased to support this initiative which highlights the events offered in Old Town" The public Facebook group can be found by searching for the page 'Old Town Swindon Events'.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust opens a new nature reserve near Swindon for the benefit of wildlife and people Bay Meadows, a new water meadow and chalk stream nature reserve owned by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, is now open to the public.

The nature reserve sits within the North Wessex Downs AONB, and is located on the outskirts of Marlborough just off the A346.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust purchased the site in 2022 to protect it from the threat of development, preserve it for the local community to enjoy and increase its biodiversity.

Bay Meadows is now both a nature park for everyone to visit and a nature reserve for wildlife, comprising 30 acres of restored water meadows.

The River Og, a typical Wiltshire chalk stream, runs through the reserve and joins the River Kennet in the town, making Bay Meadows an important wildlife corridor between Ogbourne Maisey and Marlborough.

Surveys undertaken as part of the project have revealed that more than 300 species call Bay Meadows home, including otter and wild brown trout; it is also one of the last refuges of water voles, which have decreased by over 94% nationally and are now absent from most nearby counties.

by Ninna Gibson, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Nick Fogg, Mayor of Marlborough, and Nick Holliday, Committee Member of National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Thanks to the generous support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Hills Group, Dyson, Fish in Need, Marlborough Area Board, the Town Council, and other generous donors, the Trust completed a twoyear programme of habitat restoration and community

engagement work prior to the reserve opening. Attendees of the official opening event had the chance to learn about how Bay Meadows has been transformed for the benefit of wildlife and local people since the land was purchased.

As part of the restoration project, the floodplain meadow was restored to not only improve wetland habitat to attract more mammals, birds, fish and pollinators, but to also provide a nature-based solution to mitigating climate change. A series of shallow scrapes were created to hold water back in the floodplain, allowing it to be released slowly during extended dry periods to help sustain wildlife and provide ideal habitat for water birds.

Trees and snakeshead fritillary bulbs were also planted with the help of community volunteers to increase biodiversity across the site. Grazing by a small herd of cattle has been introduced into the Wildlife Refuge area to create ideal conditions for more wildflowers to flourish.

It’s coming up to Christmas and the gift of a bike can be a popular option. Having a bike can change a life; the start of new adventures and opportunities.

It’s important to get the right bike for you or the person you’re buying for. Is the bike for cycling to school or work, going on family cycle rides or training with a local cycling club? A mountain bike may be great for off-road trails but if you’re mostly using tarmac paths it can be a bit slow and cumbersome. Most people are best suited to a hybrid bike, which is an all-rounder suited to all purposes..

Contrary to my lost column, Swindon are no longer cruising.

Instead, they’re stranded in the hard shoulder with the hazard lights on and the bonnet up.

They have effectively broken down.

The one thing that I did get right, in my last piece, was the concern regarding squad depth. However, the fact that this point has come to fruition so quickly demonstrates Town’s sudden demise. Initially I thought that we’d see Swindon’s shortcomings, in the transfer market, come to the fore during the hectic festive period.

I never thought that it’d be a factor in the shocking form of late. Yet is it the main factor?

A lot has been made of chairman Clem Morfuni’s failure to put his money where his mouth is and invest in the squad.

And yes, I do think that

the best support. If you’re on a tight budget consider buying secondhand - the safest option is to go to somewhere local such as Recycles or Bassett Bikes, who will sell you a preloved bike that fits your needs and budget, fully serviced and ready to ride. If you buy new, you need to spend over £200 to avoid getting a Bicycle Shaped Object, which won’t be enjoyable to ride and will likely break shortly after purchase.

For kids' bikes, look to buy a lightweight one from manufacturers such as Isla Bikes, Frog Bikes, Squish and Woom. There’s a great secondhand market for these bikes and you’ll get most of what you pay back when you sell it on, plus your child will have a fantastic time riding it.

There’s a range of cycles suited for all needs. As part of the drop in form, Swindon conceded a shocking 17 goals in four games.

For context that is four more than Mansfield after 16 games.

Why hasn’t Flynn changed formation or structure to counter the leaky defence? For me the blame here solely lies on his shoulders.

Since he is the man who works with these defenders each day, quite simply he should be making better strides to solve the problem.

Lastly, the players must be scrutinised.
