Fortunately for us in Swindon, events have been quite tranquil of late.

This is especially true if you compare us to Clacton which will be seeing a whole media circus over the next few weeks as a seasoned establishment politician spends his time arguing with an intergalactic spacebin.

(Sometimes life is beyond parody.)

It means in Swindon over these summer holidays we can concentrate on all the great things that are going on right on our doorstep.

And there's more going on here than you can shake a whole stick at, from Swindon Pride to food festivals to Sunday Socials to big summer reading challenges.

There are activities going on aplenty throughout the town, and on page six Swindon Borough Council outlines some of the wonderful things that we can all take advantage of.

And if it's not organised events you're after there's also the town's wonderful parks to enjoy and relax in, from Coate Water to Lydiard and Town Gardens to Stanton Park as well as the Richard Jefferies Museum and Museum and Art Swindon.

Starlight Walk raises £100,000 for Prospect Hospice

By Barrie Hudson barrie@swindonlink.com Nearly 600 supporters came together for the Prospect Hospice Starlight Walk.

The much-loved event returned, lighting up the local area in a powerful show of community spirit and support.

This year’s has already raised £100,000, with fundraising continuing in the days following the walk.

The Starlight Walk is one of Prospect Hospice’s most important community events, helping to fund specialist care and support for patients and families across Swindon, Marlborough and North Wiltshire.

Participants gathered at The Deanery School in Wichelstowe before setting off on the 10k and 15k routes, walking side by side under the evening sky.

Wearing this year’s bright pink t-shirts, walkers created a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere as they took part in the annual fundraising event.

Ben Lee, Head of Relationship Fundraising at Prospect Hospice, said: “It was fantastic to see nearly 600 people come together for the 18th Starlight Walk.

"The atmosphere on the night was incredibly special, full of energy, reflection and community spirit.

The event once again highlighted the strong connection between Prospect Hospice and the local community, with friends, families and colleagues coming together to support a shared cause.

For many participants, the walk was also a deeply personal experience. Grace Thornton, walking in memory of her grandad, said: “Taking part in the Starlight Walk

meant so much to me.

"I was walking in memory of someone very special, and being surrounded by others doing the same was incredibly moving.

"Prospect Hospice supported us during such a difficult time, and this felt like a fun way to give something back.”

Funds raised from the Starlight Walk will go towards ensuring Prospect Hospice can continue to offer free care and support to those who need it most, both in the hospice and in people’s homes.

News from SBC The Big Town Centre Clean-Up to deliver visible improvements this summer Swindon Borough Council is launching The Big Town Centre CleanUp during the final two weeks of August, delivering a targeted programme of improvements to help make the town centre cleaner, safer and more welcoming.

The initiative will focus council resources on high-impact works, including graffiti removal, street cleaning, jet washing, paving repairs, weed clearance and bench refurbishments. Increased enforcement action will also target fly-tipping hotspots, with plans to raise Fixed Penalty Notices from £400 to £1,000.

Alongside the clean-up, commercial and residential property owners will be encouraged to address issues such as graffiti, overgrown vegetation, broken windows and poor maintenance. A community action day will also give residents the chance to play an active role in improving the town centre environment.

The programme aims to deliver noticeable improvements ahead of autumn while supporting the council’s longer-term ambitions for town centre regeneration.

Residents are encouraged to report issues through the council’s

online ‘Report It’ service, helping to maintain the area and build on the improvements made during the clean-up.

Cllr Gary Sumner, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “Anyone who regularly visits the town centre will recognise that some areas are looking tired and in need of attention. While we continue to develop longer-term plans to support the town centre’s regeneration, we are determined to take practical action now and make the best possible use of the resources available to us.

“The Big Town Centre Clean-Up is about delivering improvements that people will see and feel. By concentrating our efforts over a defined period, we can make a meaningful difference and demonstrate our commitment to improving the heart of our town.”

Summer activities and support available to people in Swindon over the summer A wide range of low-cost activities, events and support services are available across Swindon during the summer holidays.

Whether families are looking for days out, indoor activities, creative opportunities for children and young people or practical support with childcare and finances, Swindon Borough Council is encouraging local people to take advantage of the opportunities available throughout the summer.

Families looking for affordable ways to keep children entertained can choose from a wide variety of activities. Local libraries are once again taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge, encouraging kids to read six books over the holidays and earn rewards along the way.

Swindon’s parks and green spaces also provide opportunities for free family fun. Visitors can enjoy Coate Water’s walking routes, café and the popular splash park, while Lydiard Park is hosting a packed programme of costed summer events, including outdoor cinema screenings, theatre performances, a Garden Party and the familyfriendly Mad4Animals event.

Residents can also explore local history and culture at Museum & Art Swindon and the Richard Jefferies Museum, which is running its popular Nature Tots sessions for young children and their carers throughout the summer.

The website ‘Do Swindon’ is a one-stop-shop for events taking place across the town, making Swindon’s cultural offer easier to find and take

part in.

As well as free and lowcost activities, support is also available for families during the school holidays. The Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme continues to provide funded holiday club places for eligible children receiving benefits-related school meals, while parents can access information about childcare support and costsaving schemes through the Government’s Best Start in Life website and Tax-Free Childcare scheme.

Residents can also access advice and services through the borough’s growing network of Community Hubs, including at Park Library. The Citizens Advice Financial Wellbeing Team will be visiting public locations across Swindon throughout the summer to

provide advice and guidance on financial issues.

To help get to all of these locations, children aged between five and 15 travelling on local bus services in England can travel for free in August. Whether it’s going on a day out, visiting family or just getting around.

Resurfacing works taking place across Swindon

Essential resurfacing is currently taking take place across 18 deteriorating roads, as Swindon Borough Council continues to take action to target roads in poor condition.

The programme of work is being carried out until the end of August to coincide with the quieter weeks of the summer holidays.

It forms part of the council’s annual major and minor roads resurfacing programme, which will see the local authority invest more than £1m into its road network this summer.

Approved through the council’s Local Transport Plan, key residential streets and important routes, including Frobisher Drive, Gainsborough Way, Colebrook Road, Eastcott Road and Marlowe Avenue, will receive improvements. are located near schools or in busy neighbourhoods meaning to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible, roads will be closed between 8am and 6pm during their scheduled repair periods. Access will be maintained for residents, and signed diversions will be in place for other road users.

This programme of work comes off the back of a three-week scheme to resurface Blagrove Roundabout. This proactive approach complements the council’s wider highways maintenance work, including reactive pothole repairs, refreshed road markings and traffic signal upkeep. Aiming to take Swindon's City of Culture bid to the finish line

Swindon Link interviews Cllr Matthew Vallender, Swindon Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Planning and Regeneration Swindon will soon make its full bid submission to become UK City of Culture 2029.

Being longlisted among a final nine in March meant the borough received a development grant worth £60,000 to help it prepare that submission, but the ultimate stakes are far, far higher.

The national competition invites locations throughout the UK to set out a vision for culture-led transformation, and whichever town or city wins will be in line for up to £10m to support a yearlong programme of cultural, heritage and community activity in 2029.

Swindon’s bid is led by the borough council and Swindon Culture Collective.

The councillor in overall charge of the local authority’s arts and culture promotion and other activities is Matthew Vallender, who represents the Stratton St Margaret and South Marston Ward and was appointed Cabinet Member for Culture, Planning and Regeneration in the wake of the local elections which saw a switch from a Labour to a Conservative-led administration.

He describes the longlisting as fantastic. “It’s incredibly rare, almost unprecedented, to be longlisted in your first-ever application.

“That’s already happened, so that’s huge, huge news.

"We’re now working through the next steps of that. We’re looking to get shortlisted.

"That’s got to be submitted in August, and we’ll find out if we’ve been shortlisted, which is the final four, in October, and then there’s another bit of work for those four to get through 6

to the final bit of the process, and there’s an announcement probably in January of next year as to who wins.

“I think it’s a fantastic thing to go for, but it is difficult. We’re up against a lot of towns and cities who have done this more than once, so they know how this process works.

“There are some that sink huge sums of money into consultants and bid packs and reuse what they’ve done previously.

"This is our first time, and it’s a really, really valuable lessonlearning exercise.”

The bid was set in train by the previous administration, and Cllr Vallender is happy that, whatever other issues might cause cross-party discord, there is backing from all political sides for the bid.

“That’s the key thing - once you have cross-party support you don’t need to spend your time reviewing it, revisiting it and adding delays.

"We’re up against the clock already to get the long list in [the next stage of the application process] and the key thing is making that bid as strong as possible and actually keeping everybody engaged together on it.”

Cllr Vallender is convinced that even being longlisted has positive implications for the Swindon arts and culture scene which go beyond the competition itself.

“It’s a national competition; it’s not just about arts and culture, although it’s the City of Culture. There’s a huge opportunity here to attract investment, raise Swindon’s profile, support businesses, create opportunities.”

By way of illustration, he highlights previous winners such as Derry/Londonderry in Northern Ireland, Hull, Coventry and Bradford.

“They’ve all managed to turn that initial spark from winning into a massive, massive investment piece and a massive boost to the town.

“It’s not just about winning and having the title, it’s actually about this huge opportunity afterwards to really, really reinvent yourself as a place and make the most of that opportunity.”

Originally from Covingham and with a professional background in planning consultancy, Cllr Vallender readily admits that he has been enthusiastically bringing himself up to speed about the arts and culture scene.

“There's a huge, huge amount of culture and art, almost behind the scenes, sometimes, in Swindon. You’ve got things like Create Studios, you’ve got Prime Theatre, you’ve got Swindon Dance, you’ve got the Swindon Culture Collective which in part, I think, was launched to help with the theatres."

A major priority in his Cabinet role is the success of the ongoing project to bring a new entertainment venue to the town centre as the Wyvern Theatre, which opened in 1971, moves toward the end of its useful life. Not long before the change of borough councils in May, that project was awarded some £20m in Government funding.

“We know the Wyvern is reaching end-of-life. It’s a 55-year-old building, and we’ve got a real opportunity with the £20m Government grant. We’re working on the business case at the moment.

"We’re hoping that will be in a place to go by the late autumn, early winter, and we will see how those numbers stack up as we try to find the rest of the money to deliver the entertainment venue.

“There’s going to be a huge piece of work over the next six months, trying to find a way of making that business case stack up.”

Cllr Vallender highlighted other projects such as the Kimmerfields development and the recently-announced town centre clean-up project as tying in with the ethos.

“It all ties into that theme of making Swindon somewhere that you’re proud to live. It takes time, nothing can happen overnight.

"Nothing ever happens overnight. Some things we’ve inherited, some things we’ve started, like the Town Centre Clean-Up. “We’re doing everything we can to keep the wheels moving in the right direction.

“The City of Culture Bid is really important for us, because even if we don’t win there’s a huge piece of work

Summer Events

This is our regular report to keep residents informed of the work South Swindon Parish Council has done over the past month and some of the events coming up across the parish. Our role is to enhance the quality of life in South Swindon by representing residents and managing amenities, green spaces and community initiatives.

Green Flag success I am delighted to announce that both Town Gardens and GWR Park have once again been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award, the international quality

We have already welcomed more than 3,000 visitors to the Town Gardens Bowl as part of its 90th anniversary celebrations.

July alone saw twelve performances, with the OASIZ tribute proving our biggest event of the year so far and selling out completely. There is still plenty to enjoy throughout August, before outdoor screenings of Fantasia and The Wizard of Oz conclude the season in September.

Community Projects South West in Bloom judging takes place on 6th August. Our gardening and street cleaning teams are preparing sites across the parish. We are proud to have achieved Gold for the past three years and look forward to welcoming the judges once again.

Our operational services have welcomed a new excavator, allowing more

groundwork projects to be completed in house, improving efficiency and reducing equipment hire costs. Planning is also progressing on the council's new depot, which will provide a modern base for our operational teams.

Work continues on plans to restore the historic Town Gardens Bowl. Following a successful first stage application, we are preparing our full Development Phase bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

More than 1,300 residents have helped shape the proposals through surveys and consultation events.

Looking Ahead There is still plenty to come this summer, including the Broadgreen Community Picnic on 5th August and the Badbury Park Summer Fest on 31st, both are free community events for residents to enjoy.

Veteran Swindon journalists honoured

Two Swindon journalists have been awarded life membership of their union as a reward for decades of support.

Between them, Barry Leighton and Paul Watson have been members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) for a total of 97 years, and during their long careers have seen countless changes across the newspaper industry.

They were honoured at a gathering of former colleagues

held at The Kings Arms in Old Town.

Barry, pictured holding his certificate alongside union branch chair Ray Tostevin, began his career in 1970, initially working in London before joining what was then the Swindon Evening Advertiser in 1976.

It was at the 'Adver' that he met his wife Pauline, herself a highly-respected journalist, who died last year.

In 1988 he moved to the Western Daily Press, working from his Swindon home and covering the area's news.

Paul Watson began his career on a Surrey newspaper 41 years ago, transferring to the Swindon Advertiser four years later.

His duties there included being education correspondent, organising contributions from local community figures and latterly working as a sub-editor. Paul subsequently moved to roles in newspapers in Gloucestershire before becoming a freelance journalist in 2018.

Inclusive theatre group backing Swindon City of Culture bid

By Barrie Hudson barrie@swindonlink.com Swindon Borough Council Deputy Leader Cllr Jake Chandler visited the Partners Theatre Company to see the work of one of the many local organisations that bring culture to the town.

The visit came amid Swindon's preparations to submit its UK City of Culture 2029 bid.

Partners Theatre Company, which is a project by Reach Inclusive Arts Charity, is an inclusive performance group for adults with a range of disabilities and health needs.

The group were rehearsing for a performance at the Signal Festival, set to run from Friday 24 July to Saturday 1 August.

The festival showcases the breadth of Swindon's growing cultural offer that forms the backbone of the town’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2029.

Cllr Chandler said: “It was a real privilege to visit the theatre group and see firsthand the dedication, talent and enthusiasm of everyone involved.

“Projects like this are at the heart of what makes Swindon such a strong and

vibrant community. Their success demonstrates the difference that communityled organisations can make when people are given the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

"From major festivals and creative organisations to grassroots groups like Reach and projects like the Partners Theatre Company, Swindon has a compelling story to tell about its ambition, creativity and community spirit."

Swindon dancer refuses to let cancer make her leave stage

By Barrie Hudson barrie@swindonlink.com Abby Daniels has spent six years facing down a rare and aggressive bone cancer.

Through surgeries, chemotherapy, a heart attack and a week in a hospice, she has kept dancing, teaching and performing. Now 26, she has one simple wish - to live.

Growing up in Swindon, Abby Daniels’ passion has been dancing and singing, and that passion has continued despite the last six years of her life being a struggle against a rare sarcoma cancer.

The cancer has returned on numerous occasions, meaning surgeries, ablations, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, but Abby has remained active and in May took part in a concert for the Sarcoma UK charity, which she organised and hosted to celebrate her life.

Sarcomas are uncommon cancers that can affect any

Abby Daniels and mum Trish part of the body, on the inside or outside, including muscle, bone, tendons, blood vessels and fatty tissues. There are about 100 different sub-types of sarcoma cancer.

Abby has decided against having more chemotherapy and instead wants to “live life for now” and spend time with her family in Swindon.

Recalling her initial diagnosis in 2020, she said: "I was devastated at the time and honestly terrified about what was to come but since then I

have managed to prove those surgeons wrong by passing my Intermediate and Dance Diploma in Education Tap exams, being part of huge dance numbers in Fame and Legally Blonde, and I have taught dance to over 100 children."

Park Community Hub helping residents access support closer to home

More than 150 people have already been supported through Park Library and Community Hub since it opened earlier this year.

Established by Swindon Borough Council, the hub brings together a range of services in one place, making it easier for residents to access information, advice and practical support closer to home. Support is available on topics including housing, employment and skills, finances, health and wellbeing, and connecting with local community services.

As Swindon's first Community Hub, the Park hub is helping to shape the future development of similar hubs across the borough.

Young readers to take on Summer Reading Challenge

Children and families across Swindon are being encouraged to take part in the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge, which is now underway in libraries across the borough.

The free annual initiative encourages children to keep reading throughout the summer holidays by reading six books of their choice. Along the way, they’ll collect stickers and rewards, with everyone receiving a certificate and medal.

This year’s theme, Read to the Beat, celebrates the connection between stories and music as part of the National Year of Reading.

Children can sign up for free at any Swindon library, where they’ll receive a Challenge Pack to help them get started.

The free entry day kicks off with the Pride March from 11am outside Regent Street in the town centre with the parade route making its way through the town to GWR Park for midday for Pride proper to

From midday the main stage events at GWR Park begin with a plethora of acts that will whet any appetite.

The day will consist of music including a Lady Gaga and a Harry Styles tribute as well as various drag acts including Baga Chipz.

Air ambulance charity reveals mission statistics

By Rufus Ellis publisher@swindonlink.com Last year, the crew from Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) were called to help 2,344 critically ill or injured people in the region, making it the busiest year on record for the charity.

The first half of 2026 has been just as busy. From 1 January to 30 June, the crew responded to 1,122 patients in need of specialist care – treatment that, for some, made the difference between reaching hospital or not.

The Critical Care Team, which consists of highly skilled Critical Care Doctors, Advanced Practitioners and Specialist Paramedics in Critical Care, responded to over six call-outs a day on average.

Across GWAAC’s region of Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, and parts of Wiltshire, medical-related incidents continued to account for a greater proportion of the crew's call-outs than traumarelated incidents, with this

proportion increasing over recent years.

In the first half of 2026, medical-related incidents accounted for 58% of callouts compared with 42% for trauma-related incidents.

Operations Officer Tim RossSmith, said: "The proportion of our call-outs involving medical emergencies has continued to increase over recent years.

"We believe this reflects a better understanding of the specialist care GWAAC can provide, supported by initiatives such as our educational work with road ambulance colleagues and embedding a Specialist Paramedic in the 999 control room to provide immediate clinical assessment when emergency calls are received.

"Together, these initiatives

ensure the patients who are most likely to benefit from our specialist skills receive them."

Medical emergencies, such as cardiac arrests and neurological conditions, continued to make up the largest proportion of the workload, while traumarelated incidents included road traffic collisions and falls.

Cardiac arrests and road traffic collisions were the two most common reasons the crew were needed, making up 23% and 15% of missions so far this year respectively.

"The next most common incidents included neurological conditions at 8% of total missions, collapses at 7% and falls at 5%.

New ‘Do Swindon’ website launches to highlight everything the town has to offer The Swindon Culture Collective network has launched a bold new brand and website to raise the profile of Swindon's vibrant cultural offer.

Do Swindon has been created as a go-to destination for residents, visitors, businesses and community organisations looking to explore what is happening across the town.

From independent events and cultural attractions to days out, local stories and hidden gems, the platform brings Swindon’s people, places and possibilities together in one accessible space.

Interview: Anastasiia Banatska, Chair of Swindon Welcomes Ukraine, is the main organiser of UkraineFest, the town's major celebration of the nation and its culture. She was forced to leave Ukraine with her children following Russia's invasion

By Barrie Hudson barrie@swindonlink.com UkraineFest 2026, the largest celebration of Ukraine’s Independence Day in Wiltshire, will take place at the Swindon Town Gardens on Saturday 22 August.

Last year’s UkraineFest, organised by Anastasiia Banatska and Swindon Welcomes Ukraine, attracted more than 4,000 visitors, and this year’s festival promises to be even bigger, brighter and more diverse.

“UkraineFest is a free event where people can experience Ukrainian culture, food and music - all in one place, at the same time,” said Anastasiia.

“It’s part of Ukraine in the middle of Swindon, giving local people the opportunity to truly dive into its atmosphere.”

Anastasiia added: “We will have a large art area featuring not only paintings, but also traditional embroidery and weaving. Visitors will also be able to take part in creative workshops for both children and adults.”

Anastasiia herself, originally from Ukrainian city Rivne, came to Britain with her children, now aged five and 16, amid the chaos following Russia's criminal invasion of her nation in 2022.

Mayor of Rivne Viktor Shakyrzian recently visited Swindon, meeting councillors, community leaders and Swindon's Ukrainian residents including Anastasiia, as discussions continued about a twinning link.

Anastasiia is also organising the documentary photo project Home with an Open Heart, which will make its debut at UkraineFest. Created by photographer Yuliia Shevchenko, the exhibition tells the stories of local families who opened their homes to Ukrainians through the Homes 20

“It’s about the people who welcomed Ukrainian families into their homes,” said Anastasiia. “We wanted to share their motivations, experiences and the challenges they faced. The project started in Swindon and will travel across the UK. "I am currently working on several other community projects, including the creation of an Art Space. However, one of my most important projects for me is the Ukrainian Saturday School, which we recently launched and are now actively looking for sponsorship.

"Many Ukrainian children who arrived in the UK at a young age, including my own son, now speak mainly English.

That’s why it is so important to help them preserve their native language, culture, and identity.”

In Ukraine Anastasiia was a business owner for more than 12 years, specialising in events organisation. Her work included everything from family centre services to organising school excursions. Today she works in promotions and sales but hopes to go back into business here when this is practicable. She has ideas for celebrations and festivals catering to people of all walks of life.

"I think that for everyone it was very hard to leave

Ukraine, but because we didn't really have a choice, within one day I think most of the families with children made this decision, and I did the same.

"On the second day of the war I heard bombs in my town.

I looked at my children; my little one was one year old. I took the children, two children, two bags and I just went. In my head it was just one word, 'Abroad, abroad, abroad!'"

An uncle arranged a move to Slovakia: "Then we felt so much pressure because people around were afraid that war would come to them. From the beginning [of the war] we thought it would be three days; no-one thought it would be four years.

"At that moment no-one knew anything. There wasn't any opportunity to stay anywhere long term, but the UK created the first long term programme, where Ukrainian families could live with a host family for six months and longer. This offered a feeling of some stability and safety."

Anastasiia and her children first arrived in Marlborough, then moved to Aldbourne, and now live in Royal Wootton Bassett. She will be eternally grateful to the hosts and sponsors who helped and supported her and her young family as she found her feet.

"Now I have an English mother

"When I arrived, I was in so much stress, and I think every single Ukrainian was the same.

When I saw these lovely people who smiled at me I couldn't believe it! 'A person I don't know at all - why are you smiling at me?"

She laughs at the memory.

“I am grateful for every smile from each person. It helped me settle in, and after some time I felt I was in a position where I wanted to share and give back."

Within three months of arriving in the UK, Anastasiia organised Wiltshire’s first Ukrainian festival, which took place in Marlborough in 2022.

Soon afterwards, she joined the Swindon Welcomes Ukraine team as an event organiser and now chairs the organisation.

“I am grateful to be part of the Swindon Welcomes Ukraine team - every single person adds something special to the team and makes a difference. Special thank you to Swindon Borough Council and the Warm Welcome Team for their continued support and for standing by our community projects."

Anastasiia recently found herself pondering what she would do if money didn't matter.

"I would do charity projects and events. At the moment it's my passion. You reap what you sow. It doesn't matter whether you're from Ukraine or from England or anywhere in the world, unite! I believe that when people unite together they can grow something, they can build something. Now I want to organise international events here, as well as initiatives that promote health, wellbeing, and sport."

LINK POLITICS Rolling up our sleeves and getting on with the job A column by Swindon Borough Council Leader Cllr Gary Sumner July has so far been a month of rolling up our sleeves and getting on with the job of making the right choices for Swindon, both for today and for the years ahead.

As a council, we are facing some difficult realities. Like local authorities across the country, we continue to experience rising demand for services alongside significant financial pressures.

That is why I was pleased to see the first meeting of our new Financial Recovery Advisory Group take place this month.

Bringing together representatives from across the political spectrum, the group has a clear purpose – finding practical ways to put the council's finances on a firmer footing while protecting the

services residents depend on.

One of the biggest pressures on local government finances is the increasing cost of caring for vulnerable children and young people.

Behind every budget figure is a child who deserves safety, stability and the opportunity to thrive. A particular challenge for Swindon is recruiting enough foster carers locally.

Too often, young people have to be placed far from their schools, friends and support networks because suitable

placements cannot be found closer to home. If fostering is something you have ever thought about, even briefly, I would encourage you to find out more about the support available.

At the same time, we are continuing to plan for Swindon's long-term growth. Work on the emerging Local Plan is progressing, helping to shape how our borough develops over the next two decades.

Growth must be accompanied by the infrastructure and services people need, while also creating opportunities to strengthen our town centre and attract further investment.

Alongside these strategic decisions, we must not lose sight of the everyday environment people experience. Residents rightly want clean streets, well-maintained public spaces and a town centre they can feel proud of. That is why at

Power closer to home, not further away A column by borough council Labour Group leader Cllr Jim Robbins Politics can sometimes feel like a series of disconnected debates. But two issues currently facing Swindon are actually about the same thing: who gets to shape our future, and how we make sure decisions are taken openly and in the interests of local people.

The first is the ongoing discussion about devolution across the Thames Valley.

For the last two years, councils across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Swindon have been exploring a devolution deal that would bring power and funding out of Whitehall and into our region. Government ministers have described a Thames Valley deal including Swindon as a "strong and compelling" proposition, with the potential to create a regional economy worth

£97 billion and unlock new powers over transport, skills, infrastructure and housing.

As Labour and Co-operative politicians, we believe decisions should be taken at the most local level possible. We know that people understand Swindon's challenges better than ministers in Westminster ever will. That's why we've consistently supported a devolution deal that includes our town and recognises the role Swindon plays in the Thames Valley economy.

Swindon's economic output per head is among the highest in the region, and our links with

Oxfordshire and Berkshire already underpin thousands of jobs and businesses.

It was therefore deeply disappointing to see negotiations hit a significant obstacle last month, and it appeared to be for political reasons, rather than people working for the best for their areas. However, I remain convinced that the economic and social case for Swindon's inclusion remains overwhelming, and I hope all partners can return to the table in the months ahead.

At the same time, there is another debate taking place much closer to home.

The council administration is proposing to abolish the Build a Greener Swindon Policy and Performance Committee, the body responsible for developing new policy and scrutinising progress on climate action and commitments.

This comes despite the

Three free festivals set to bring thousands of visitors to Old Town Old Town is preparing for a big month of events, with three major free to attend festivals set to transform the area throughout August.

Building on the success of last summer's hugely popular Summer Socials when the gas company closed Devizes Road, organisers are expanding beyond Wood Street, with this year's events taking place across both Wood Street and Victoria Road, creating more space for visitors, entertainment and local businesses.

The programme includes the return of the Beer & Country Festival, UkraineFest and the World Street Foods Festival.

The events have been organised by Old Town Business Association, alongside local partners South Swindon Parish Council and sponsors Deacons Jewellers, and are expected to attract thousands of visitors across the month.

With visitor numbers continuing to grow, organisers have also made the decision to expand the footprint of the street events.

Kris Talikowski, Chair of the Old Town Business Association, said: "The response to last year's Summer Socials exceeded all of our expectations.

"They showed just how much people enjoy spending time in Old Town when the streets are filled with music, food and

Organised by Swindon Welcomes Ukraine, the festival has become one of the borough's most important community celebrations, bringing together Ukrainian families, local residents and visitors to celebrate Ukrainian culture through music, dance, food, crafts and performances.

This year's event carries even greater significance as it also celebrates the twinning of Swindon and Rivne, recognising the growing friendship between the two communities and the positive contribution Ukrainian families continue to make across Swindon.

Running from noon until 7pm, the event promises a full afternoon and evening of entertainment in one of Swindon's most historic parks.

While each festival has its own identity, they all share a common purpose, supporting independent businesses, creating opportunities for local traders and community organisations and encouraging people to discover everything Old Town has to offer.

A global feast finishes off the month - the Street Foods Festival The celebrations conclude on Sunday 30 August with the World Street Foods Festival, running from noon until 5pm across Wood Street and Victoria Road.

The festival celebrates the incredible diversity of international cuisine available both locally and beyond, with traders serving dishes from around the world alongside live music, family entertainment and artisan stalls.

There’s no TH sound in Irish.

Yet it’s strange that English people say River Thames without TH. Don’t say “Top of the morning to ye!” or “Sure and Begorrah” – those are hated Hollywood fabrications.

Greet people as you pass on country walks and expect to be asked “Where are you from?” as a conversation opener.

Ask for directions if you’re lost. However, watch out, as “not far” can mean 10m or 300m.

Don’t ask about Leprechauns! Better to wreck your head deciphering this Sixth Century Druid prophesy:

Looking to get back on your bike or build your cycling confidence?

Swindon Cycle Campaign has a packed programme of free cycling events throughout July and August, funded by Cycling UK's Big Bike Revival and Swindon Travel Choices.

The Big Bike Revival is a UKwide initiative helping adults discover (or rediscover) the benefits of cycling.

Whether you're learning to ride, improving your confidence, or getting your bike checked over, there's something for everyone.

Children are welcome to attend with an accompanying adult.

It’s time for my favourite column of the year.

After a fantastic footballfilled summer, it’s time to turn our attention to the roots of the game. The EFL is back.

So many of England’s stars were raised in the EFL, now let’s look at who might rise from League 2 in 2026/27.

The most expensive British player of all time, Elliot Anderson, played a key role in Bristol Rovers' last promotion in 2022.

Now, Town’s neighbours are my favourites for promotion.

Steve Evans, not for the first time, has transformed his team.

The Pirates have gone from staring down the barrel to having the wind in their sails, finishing last season in fine fettle.

They appear a tantalising prospect which could be mouthwatering should they get

to refresh their cycling skills in a relaxed, supportive environment.

- Cycling Confidence Sessions, Thursdays, 6:30–pm. Build the skills and confidence needed to make everyday journeys by bike.

- Dr Bike 'Fix It' Sessions, Wednesdays, 10am–1pm from 22 July. Bring your bike along for a free safety check and minor repairs by experienced mechanics. They'll also advise if any major work is needed.

- Free Dr Bike sessions at Badbury Park. Drop in between 10am and noon on Sunday 26 July, Tuesday 11 August and Thursday 27 August These sessions are ideal if your bike needs a quick service, puncture repair or safety check before you head out riding.

What to expect:

Dr Bike Fix It sessions - Free safety check by an experienced mechanic.

- Minor repairs, including puncture fixes, carried out free of charge.

- Advice on any further maintenance your bike may need.

I felt Will Wright was hard done by when released; Town’s loss could be Barnet’s gain as he offers experience at the back.

York City will be hoping to go one better than Barnet and

win promotion at the first time of asking. After amassing 108 points in a thrilling National League title race, I believe they can bridge the ever-shrinking gap. The teams which come up must be at such a consistent level, they seamlessly swan into the EFL. From looking at those coming behind, to one who used to be ahead. Each of the four who join us from League One arrive with their houses far from in order.

I think Port Vale are the most suited to a successful return, manager Jon Brady has a League 2 promotion on his CV with Northampton, Town’s opening opponents.

So, to our own, Swindon.

What can we expect? I’d hang my hat on Ian Holloway not lasting the season. Patience is thin, a fast start is a must.
