Cash hopes for new museum and art gallery dashed

Director of the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery Trust Rod Hebden remains upbeat in the wake of the news that the bid for £12.7m from the Heritage Lottery Fund had fallen through – and determined to build on the momentum of the project.

Under the proposed scheme, Swindon’s nationally important collection of 20th century art would have been housed in an iconic, purpose-built ‘winged’ design building on the site of the Wyvern Theatre car park.

Mr Hebden said: “I’m still smiling, but it’s been so difficult to keep this under wraps,” adding that he had received the disappointing news 11 weeks ago and had been forced to remain tight lipped ahead of the local elections.

“I have to admit that part of me is gutted at the news, that’s the word that a lot of people have been using, but it’s now important to move on positively.”

He explained that feedback from the HLF had been “glowing” and that the cooperation between the Trust and Swindon Borough Council and the strength of the bid had been praised.

“We knew that it was going to be difficult – I personally estimated that we had a 1 in 3 chance of securing the money. It was an ambitious bid and everyone involved put their heart and soul into it. We have been in contact

He said that the news, while admittedly a set-back, did not mean that they were back to square one.

“There’s been a lot of work that has been done in the background into the collection and the audience, and we need to build on that. We should celebrate everything that’s been achieved and build on that.

“We have already got talks lined up with the council and the lottery fund. We are not taking a breather, it’s full steam ahead.”

And on whether a less

ambitious bid would have had a greater chance of success Rod said: “There is no way of knowing, but we felt it was important to create the best bid we could. I don’t think that cutting corners is the way forward.”

Addressing the vocal campaign against the proposals, Rod said: “The good thing is that it shows that the people of Swindon are passionate about their heritage and to engage in that debate.

"We have had some people who signed the petition against the proposed art gallery in the first instance but then changed their mind about it when they found out more about it. We are keen to continue to talk to everyone – it’s important that we keep

having those conversations.

One of the positive things about this whole process is the level of debate. It shows that people care about heritage.

Most people want the best for Swindon. It’s passionate people who care about the town that will help bring about change.”

Sitting alongside Rod Hebden was Swindon Borough Council leader David Renard, who explained that there was a pressing need for the town’s art collection to be housed in a more suitable building.

“This building is not fit for purpose. When it was opened in 1964 it was only ever going to be a temporary site. But temporary buildings have a habit of becoming permanent.

We are going to look at all the options open to us.”

Collectors show Lechlade Collectors Club are set to take part in the 4th Annual Lechlade Vintage Rally and Country Show.

Penhill and Upper Stratton borough councillor Theresa Page has resigned from the Labour group.

She will now be serving her ward as an independent until she is up for re-election next year. Coun Page was unavailable for comment.

Rain on the parade: Swindon and Wiltshire Pride cancelled for 2018

Festival-goers have been left disappointed after the Swindon and Wiltshire Pride Committee announced the parade will not be taking place this year.

Swindon and Wiltshire Pride has been a cultural highlight for many residents over the years but due to a lack of funding and committee members, organisers have had to cancel the parade and festival, which would be in its tenth year.

Lee Clarke, the Pride Chair, said: “This decision was not arrived at lightly and we appreciate the disappointment not only from the LGBT community but by the many Swindon residents who have come year on year to support us.

“We will be holding a Pride Day at the Regent Hotel on the

11 August with our headline act to raise funds for an event in 2019 to celebrate LGBT diversity but given the location it won’t be on the scale we have been able to enjoy in previous years.

“The Committee would like to thank all those who have supported this event over the past 10 years, including the many sponsors and local

businesses who have given their time and donations plus the talented artists who have performed.

The Committee will work hard to create an event next year which everyone can enjoy and be welcomed to.”

Iconic railway works building to become new church for Swindon The former Pattern Store in Swindon is to be turned into a new church for the town, the Diocese of Bristol has announced.

It is part of a plan by the Diocese of Bristol to support the regeneration of railway works area.

The Pattern Church, as it will be known, is part of a major strategic initiative by the Diocese of Bristol to support its ‘creating connections’ vision.

It will be a Resourcing Church; resourcing church partner with other churches in the area to offer support and resources.

The team at Pattern Church will be led by Revd Joel Sales.

Joel worked as a pastor at churches in Bath and Cape Town.

It is planned that Pattern Church will open around Christmas 2018.

The Pattern Store is a Grade II listed building constructed in 1897 for the Great Western

Railway in Swindon at a cost of £4,000. The building held the drawings and papers for the designs associated with the railway and remained in use until the railway works closed in 1986. The basement was used as a mess room during World War I, as a canteen between 1939 to 1960 and more recently the building has been a bar and Italian restaurant.

Joel, who is married to Cath and has two young sons, said: “Cath and I feel deeply privileged to be invited by the Bishop of Swindon to take part

in this exciting new initiative.

We look forward to working alongside all the other churches in loving and serving the people of Swindon.”

Rt Revd Dr Lee Rayfield, Bishop of Swindon, said: “This is set to become the home base for providing fresh energy, people and approaches which will resource other churches across the town and contribute to social transformation. Wichelstowe Guides put gender on the agenda As part of their study of journalism, members of the 1st Wichelstowe Guides asked 'is Swindon's school system gender biased?'

The youngsters were supported by Nadia Al-Sakkaf, the mother of one of their members.

More than 77% of school children in Swindon believe that they are treated unequally by their teachers based on their gender. This was the main finding in a small survey conducted by members of the 1st Wichelstowe Guides unit.

The guides asked a total of 35 children between the ages of 8 and 14 in 4 primary schools and 5 secondary schools about their impressions. This survey was part of a two-day session on introduction to journalism organised by the unit's leaders.

"We brain stormed with the guides on a topic that they felt was relevant to them. We referred to the Girlguiding's Girls Attitudes Survey 2017 on gender stereotypes," said Lorna Warrington-Gallienne one of the leaders of the unit.

"The guides acknowledged that as they went from primary schools to secondary, they

became more aware of the gender stereotypes and recognised that in school sometimes these stereotypes were indirectly perpetuated by the school system itself," added Hannah Wells, another leader in the unit.

Each of the guides had to survey the opinions in schools on the children's experiences based on their gender.

Out of the 35 surveyed children 27 remarked that their teachers treat boys and girls differently, while only eight, disagreed. The children explained that the most visible difference is related to the uniform, as the teachers are

more strict with girls' uniforms than boys'.

"Boys are allowed to go home in their PE kit but girls have to change back into uniform because the teacher say it is inappropriate," said a ten year old girl in year six.

However, an eight year old boy explained that during PE girls have the advantage of changing in the classroom while boys have to change in the school corridor.

The other issue where the survey respondents disagreed on was consequences of misbehaviour. A 12 year old boy in year 7 explained that teachers expect boys to

misbehave more than girls and treat them accordingly. A year six boy complained that "boys get blamed for everything."

Moreover, according to a 13 year old boy: "Girls get away with things by blaming stuff on having 'girl issues'."

On the other hand girls said that they were expected to work more in class, and that "teachers consider girls as more of a role model for boys," said a 12 year old girl.

Of the 23% who said that there is no visible inequality among boys and girls in school, an 11 year old boy explained that the teachers try their best to show that no one gender is better than the other.

The findings of this local survey agree with the larger Girls Attitudes Survey 2017, which stresses the importance of taking girls' voices seriously in the things that matter to them.

Organisers are all set for launch of Old Town Festival

Organisers are putting the finishing touches to the Old Town Festival.

The annual week-long event, which has been running since 1991, kicks off with the Old Town Festival Parade and Lawn Family Fun Day on the 10 June.

Other events include a pub quiz and live music at The Tuppenny, a jazz evening at the Royal Oak, the Lethbridge 10k Run starting from the Croft Sport Centre, tours of Christ Church bell tower, a piano recital, live music at The Castle Inn, a concert at The Bowl in the Town Gardens and a Grand Final Street Party in Wood Street.

Soak up the World Cup atmosphere at the Bowl

As the excitement for the World Cup starts to build it’s time to start thinking of where you’ll be watching England’s games.

Well, no need to look any further as there will be special outdoor screenings of the England games at the Old Town Bowl in Town Gardens.

The venue is a natural bowl located within the gardens and is the perfect setting to soak up the atmosphere as Swindon gets behind England during their 2018 World Cup campaign. It’s a family event, with a fully licensed bar, BBQ and face painting.

The games will be shown on a big LED screen and there will be extra sound installed for the commentary.

It’s a ticketed event with

a limited capacity which is likely to sell out quickly so don’t delay in purchasing your tickets. There are family

offers as well as cheaper tickets options for adult ‘season tickets’ which covers all three group games.

The group games are

England v Tunisia (7pm kickoff) on Monday 18 June; England v Panama (1pm kickoff) on Sunday 24 June; and England v Belgium (7pm kick-off) on Thursday 28 June. There is no car parking at the venue so people are advised to use public transport or use local car parks that are only a few minutes walk from the venue.

The closest car parks are Britannia Place, SN1 3RA or Prospect Place, SN1 3LJ. Due to licensing restrictions alcohol cannot be brought on the site, however there is a fully licensed bar. Flares and pyrotechnics are also prohibited.

Get set for fiery flavours and cheesy moments

It's time to get your taste buds at the ready as the Chilli and Cheese festival makes a comeback to Swindon’s Lydiard Park, Saturday 7 July to Sunday 8 July.

The event is set to provide an array of tastes, colours and experiences for all the family to enjoy, from 10am to 5pm.

There will also be a variety of chillies and cheeses from previous traders to keep returning visitors up to date with the favourite flavours.

The entertainment includes Daniella D’ville Freak Show, chilli eating competitions and cooking demonstrations along with magic shows and falconry flying displays for children.

supported by a beer festival running all weekend from the Downton Brewery with an additional inflatable pub provided by Dorset’s mobile Bar and Worley’s Cider bar serving a wide selection of ciders.

Get in the running Aldbourne village is set to host a 5k Fun Run on Sunday June 10.

The event is being organised in aid of St Michael’s School to raise much needed funds for an all-weather running track that will be used by the school and community alike.

This will mean that the pupils’ daily mile run (that each child does already) will be enhanced in wet weather and local running groups are excited about the potential to be able to train there all year round. Fun in the Sun for Old Town residents

June is often a quiet month for the residents association when we meet for the first time as a new committee after our AGM. We also can look back on our Spring Planting with some satisfaction, thanks to all the volunteers, we are improving six local beds to be judged in the RHS Community Gardens competition later in the year. We are also interested to hear of gardens in the area and any volunteers to help with the work.

In the Eastcott part of Old Town we have a new Borough Councillor, Imtiyaz Shaikh and a new Parish Councillor, Patrick Herring and it certainly seems there is a lot for them to do. There have been certain concerns about fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour, but also there are growing concerns about planning applications for significant new housing in Old Town. It might seem that Old Town is very built up but there are applications currently pending for development of the Pope Cranes site opposite Christchurch and for the Advertiser Offices building on Victoria Road/ Albert Street. Each of these are large developments and will increase the number of people and the amount of parking needed significantly.

We also see the creeping changes of Home of Multiple 10

Occupation applications.

Eastcott has seen a lot of challenges from HMO developments now there are prospects for large HMOs at the top of Eastcott Hill, Croft Rd and several smaller ones spread around Old Town.

Overall we understand that the area cannot stand still and that housing and redevelopment of brownfield sites are relevant, however we are asking both Borough and Parish Councillors to pay significant attention to the level of development of each site and the ongoing effects on parking, rubbish, traffic, etc. It is important that the life and amenity of existing residents is safeguarded against the wishes to make profit from the area. We are waiting for a blueprint plan to tackle parking in old town and now we ask is there a plan for development of the area overall to define what can work for new and old residents alike.

South Swindon Parish Council Summer 2018 newsletter

Chair's report: The Parish Council held its first Annual Parish Meeting on 3 April 2018.

This is part of my speech to the meeting: "The parish was born out of difficult circumstances, but I am pleased to report that councillors have worked together and the parish has functioned as a collective for the greater good.

"We set a precept to include contingency to invest in improving services such as additional grass cutting and litter picking. The belief of this parish is that we should enhance the services provided by the Borough Council, not fall into a trap of a race to the bottom. The precept was set at a comparable rate compared to other parishes.

The size of the parish allowed for economy of scale to ensure that the precept did not rise this year.

"We have been successful in our primary aim to hit the floor running with frontline services, protecting community centres and formal parks from the risk of closure. The StreetSmart agreement working with North and West Swindon Parish

Councils has proved successful.

"Moving forward with StreetSmart services, we need to ensure value for money, whilst considering job security and the dignity at work to earn a real living wage.

The parish plans to become an accredited living wage employer in the next municipal year."

Broadgreen Street Food Festival

The weather has been a major factor with the grass cutting at the beginning of the season.

The continual rain has meant that the cutters were not able to get out early and some areas have had to be left because they were too wet for

Parish Ranger to take on maintenance tasks South Swindon Parish Council has employed a Parish Ranger to help look after the parish.

The main task will be to inspect play areas and allotments. That should still leave time for additional maintenance tasks which fall outside of the StreetSmart contract.

If you have seen an area that

looks untidy and needs some work, please contact the Parish Office. The Parish Ranger will investigate and provided it is council land, he will do his best to make good. At the moment, the Parish Council has one Parish Ranger, but as this is already proving to be very valuable, the Parish Council may consider employing more.

Old Town Library competition

The Parish Council staged a competition at Old Town Library in April 2018 to coincide with the appearance of Nick Sharratt at the Art Centre.

It followed the theme of the book 'Shark in the Park' and asked children to provide a picture of what they

could see from their imaginary telescope.

The winner was Sophie Teslar who received a signed copy of Nick Sharratt's book, presented by the author.

The Parish Council plans to hold another

competition for the summer holiday based on the mural in Old Town Library. The

world, along with other stalls and entertainment from local musicians. This is the first time the Parish Council has staged such an event and we hope it will be enjoyed by parishioners. It may then become an annual event.

New councillor South Swindon Parish Council has welcomed Cllr Patrick Herring as the new councillor for Eastcott Ward.

He was elected on 3 May 2018 following the resignation of Dave Wood who has moved away from the area. A list of current councillors and their contact details are available on the parish council website.

Conservatives retain control of Swindon Borough Council

In Swindon's local government elections, the Conservatives held on to the Borough Council having fought off Labour in a close contest.

Before the election there was talk of no single party having an overall majority but The Conservatives managed to only just retain control with a majority of one.

Overall Labour actually took slightly more of the vote share than the Tories but not in the seats where it would have made a difference.

Labour needed four gains to take control of Swindon Borough Council.

They took their target seat of Eastcott from the Lib Dems, but the two

key Labour/Conservative marginals of Lydiard & Freshbrook and Stratton St Margaret both stayed in Tory hands.

It was the Lib Dems, not Labour, who ate into the Tory majority with their surprise win by just seven votes in Wroughton & Wichelstowe.

Stephen Taylor, Swindon Borough Council’s Returning Officer, said: “The Government-funded trial of voter ID ran extremely smoothly overall and we estimate that turnout is up compared to previous years by around six per cent to 40 per cent. Our figures show that of the 62,166 people who voted, only 60 were asked to return to the polling station having not brought their poll card or alternative form of ID along with them.

"Thirty-five of these were either attested or later returned with the appropriate ID leaving just 0.04 per cent of eligible electors who did not either return with alternative ID or seek a replacement poll card.

“A huge amount of work went on behind the scenes here in Swindon to raise awareness of the voter ID trial and we carried out extensive engagement with local groups following a detailed equality impact assessment, which was scrutinised by the Cabinet Office, the Electoral Commission, the Association of Electoral Administrators and the Council itself.

“The Cabinet Office and Electoral Commission will now carry out a thorough evaluation and lessonslearned exercise.”

‘Swindon Treasure’ still motivates efforts to reach £1m for Breast Cancer Now

Swindon Treasure Shirley Garman continues to motivate friends and family to raise £1m for charity after she lost her battle to breast cancer.

In 1995 Shirley Garman pledged to raise £1m towards fighting breast cancer after founding the local group Wiltshire Breakthrough.

Unfortunately Shirley lost her battle with cancer in 2009.

Since then her friends, family, and fellow campaigners have vowed to reach Shirley’s target and continue to fundraise in her memory through Breast Cancer Now. For the charity’s next fundraiser the group will be hosting a Mamma Mia singa-long Saturday 16 June.

Celebrating in true dancing queen style the event includes a Greek island dress code as well as a Greek buffet, followed by a raffle after the

film screening.

Shirley’s friend and fellow fundraiser Eunice Salmon said: “We started campaigning many, many years ago – when we started we wanted to raise £1m, and since Shirley’s passing have vowed to carry on in her memory.

“We are £44,000 off our target and want to invite anyone to help us achieve this challenge. Next year will be the tenth anniversary of Shirley’s death.

“It’s funny because the day we announced this fundraiser was the day ABBA announced they would be releasing new records, and then of course the new movie will be out this July – so we’re hoping this will help push our cause.”

The sing-a-long screening of Mamma Mia will take place at Old Town’s Christ Church from 7.15pm.

Swindon Link photographer snaps up national award

Swindon Link photographer, Rachel Davis, 20, snapped up The UK Picture of the Year award last month in London.

Rachel, who works for Calyx Multimedia in Swindon, was unanimously chosen as the winner against three other competititors. She is the first woman to win the award.

Rachel said: "I can't believe it at all. The other photographers were from bigger publications - one of the images was on the front page of The Sun, and I thought 'Of course that's going to win' - and the photos were really good, so I honestly didn't think I would win.

"When they called my name my mouth just dropped. When I told my parents the next day they thought I was tricking them."

The picture, selected by a

panel of judges was taken last year in July at the Royal International Air Tattoo.

Alongside her job working at McDonald's Rachel has been working part-time in between at Calyx for nearly two years.

She said: "Afterwards I was so busy back at work I forgot about winning the award when people congratulated me. It still doesn't feel like it's happened."

Rachel was asked to join Calyx by the agency's

owner, and national photographer, Richard Wintle after he saw some of her photographs at a New College end of year show.

He said: "She's improved dramatically - taken everything on board - and is now a good press photographer.

"When I first saw her images at the exhibition I thought 'there's something about these'.

Richard, who has been mentoring Rachel, attended the

awards with her.

He added: "The look on her face when she won was amazing. Everyone was saying it was the best picture.

"For her to be nominated was good, but for her to win the prize was outstanding."

Pride of Swindon plaque unveiled

Swindon Mayor Maureen Penny unveiled a plaque to commemorate the 2018 Pride of Swindon award winners at Swindon Central Library on Tuesday.

After an introduction by Swindon 105.5 Community Radio manager Shirley Ludford, the mayor told a crowd of winning and nominated groups and individuals: “I think you are all terrific because of the positive contribution you make in the community.”

With a flourish, she lifted

a cloth to reveal the 2018 plaque – joining other recognised winners on plaques dating back to 2009.

Those listed on the plaque are: Richard Hazell, Jo Sharpe, John Holmes, Ernie Quince, William Gulliver, Tracey Bijok, Pradeep Bhardwaj, Mike Baxter, Tony Martin (posthumously) The Christchurch Building Committee, The Royal British Legion information and caseworker volunteers, Swindon Seniors Forum, Swindon Night Shelter and Hometruths.

Swindon artist pays tribute to one of the UK’s most iconic stars, Diana Dors Swindon artist Anna Mazzotta presents “Bold, Bad and Beautiful” – a new and exciting look at Diana Dors.

Anna Mazzotta is fast becoming one of the most talked about and respected artists in the region and is hosting her exhibition at Swindon Central library.

Swindon Festival of Literature celebrates 25 years of wonder

“There are premiership footballers and authors who are the same age as the Swindon Festival of Literature!� marvelled event director Matt Holland at the launch of the 25th annual event.

And what an event it was.

A wide range of authors shared their ideas, attitudes and writing with visitors encompassing such diverse subjects as space travel, running, ecology, philosophy, parenthood, poetry, identity, art and artificial intelligence.

In keeping with festival tradition, the two week long celebration of the written word began at the crack of dawn on Monday May 7 with a celebration of songs, performance and readings at the Lawns in Old Town.

For once this year the dawn event was a huge success with

not a cloud in sight.

And over the following 14 days, event organisers staged more than 50 events at venues around the town including the Arts Centre, Wyvern Theatre, Lower Shaw Farm and Lydiard Park.

Among the authors and guests at this year's event were runner Jo Pavey, philosopher A C Grayling, poets Ben Okri and Michael Rosen, punk turned author Viv Albertine.

Other names included nurse turned author Christine Watson, tennis coach turned author Judy Murray and politician turned author Harriet Harman.

In the words of event director Matt Holland: "I've been running this thing for 25 years and I've noticed that something amazing happens when you get people in a room and you allow them to talk.

"It's just people sharing ideas - it sounds simple but it just works."

Swindon Lives IN CONVERSATION WITH: Dave Young

By Claire Dukes claire@swindonlink.com After being treated for throat cancer, Dave Young is gearing up for a motorcycle ride 'Road to Recovery' to Cyprus in aid of Brighter Futures.

Dave, 56, from Walcot - known to most as the former landlord of The Victoria and 12 Bar in Swindon - was diagnosed with throat cancer in March 2016. As the closest hospital with a radiotherapy unit, Dave recieved treatment at Churchill Hospital in Oxford.

Now in remission Dave and his wife Anna Sprawson are raising money to help Brighter Futures' Radiotherapy Appeal reach their target to build a radiotherapy unit in Swindon. Anna said: "One thing we noticed was an endless stream of Swindon taxis outside the hospital, dropping people off for a five minute treatment. It would help a lot of people to have the unit here."

Luckily for Dave and Anna they were able to park their mobile home in Churchill Hospital's car park during David's six weeks of treatment, but they explained that this was still tough.

Dave added: "It's only when it happens to you that you're aware of what's going on - the realities of it all."

A motorbike enthusiatic and engineer, he has been planning a road trip for some time. He explained: "I had a hankering to do a long trip on the bike, and now I'm able to use it to do some good and raise some money."

For someone who has undergone extensive surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, you would expect to meet someone quite disheartened. Dave and Anna however feel more motivated and upbeat than ever. He explained: "I had to wear this mask over my face which was then bolted down to a table - because of my claustrophobia, this was my worst nightmare. The treatments felt like the sun burning your throat and food tasted like metal. But up on the ward people were dying, and that kicked me up the arse."

As part of his treatment Dave was fed through a nasogastric feed for four weeks. "That made me miserable," he explained "I didn't like that at all, so we took it out ourselves - I said 'I give up! I will try and eat'." As Anna had medical training they were able to stay at home for this part of the treatment.

For the ride itself Dave has purchased a second hand motorbike from Ebay, which is now 26 years old. He said: "It's the opposite of what I go for in a bike - smooth, reliable, quiet but it's the perfect bike for this trip."

The details of the route are still being finalised, with Dave open to suggestions of places to visit along the way, which includes Swindon, Channel Tunnel, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Tasucu Ferry to Kyrenia, North Cyprus, and finally Cyprus. "It's a loose plan," he said, "I've never done anything like this before - I've never ridden a bike outside the UK! But I'm quite happy to go on my own - couldn't imagine going with someone else. I can go when I want, stop when I want, and leave when I want. I'll be

riding for 11 days, but it could be less - it could be more.

I'm ever the optimist - I know it'll be harder than I think, but I'll find a way round it."

As well as the ride David and Anna have other fundraising events in the pipeline. Still on the music scene as a DJ and band member of Chaos Brothers, Dave and Anna will hosting music gigs to continue their fundraising efforts.

In order for the radiotherapy unit to go ahead, the Radiotherapy Appeal needs to raise £2.9 million by November this year - so far more than £2,200,000 has been raised.

Through Dave's Just Giving page he and Anna have already raised more than £700 (not including gift aid). He said: "We're funding the ride ourselves - everything donated will go to Brighter Futures - but we're hoping to give to the appeal and raise awareness."

Anna added: "It affects a lot of families - three members of Dave's family have cancer - but it's not the death sentence it used to be. Hopefully we'll make a difference."
