Big Lunch returns to Savernake Social Hall

Doing your bit for the environment is now everybody's responsibility.

It's why I applaud all of the great cycling networks around Swindon that are actually getting people away from our clogged and polluted roads and onto a more healthy and sustainable form of transport.

This month for Heart of Swindon we interview Becky Cox about Swindon's cycling system. It's an interesting read.

One aspect she mentions is how the town centre has a protection order banning cyclists from entering the central area for anti-social reasons.

This is a huge backwards step and only serves as a deterrent to anyone wanting to commute or travel to the centre by bike and also means they have to circumnavigate the entire centre to get from one side to the other. Other towns manage quite well with having bikes and pedestrians safely in the same space so why can't Swindon?

And if they're worried about BMXers (like my son George) why don't they go for it and welcome them by building a managed town centre skatepark - giving them somewhere to go and bringing a bit of life to the area?

Plans are in place at Savernake Street Social Hall for the Eastcott Community Organisation’s Big Lunch.

The annual event, taking place from noon on Sunday June 2nd, includes circus performances and workshops, face-painting, music and great food contributed by those attending the event..

Visitors will be entertained by Darryl J Carrington’s amazing circus tricks, and music from Richard Wileman.

Caroline Davies-Khan, chair of Eastcott Community Organisation said: “We’re really thrilled to be putting on this event, to encourage the community to come together.

Hopefully the sun will be shining as well, but whatever the weather, it’s going to be a fantastic occasion.”

The Big Lunch first took place in 2009, when the Eden Project

Happy to help: experts were on hand at last month's repair cafe wanted to put on an event to improve the health and wellbeing of the community.

Since then, it has grown, with 2017 seeing more than 9 million people take to the streets, at over 90, 000 events.

Eastcott Community Organisation have been organising Big Lunches for the past 5 years.

Last month saw the return of the Repair Cafe where

volunteers were on hand to help help breathe new life into previously defunct objects.

The event featured live music from Jol Rose Music, Richard Dawes and David Woodford.

Cakes and savouries are being sold by V-Cuisine.

Transport planner Becky Cox: looking at the town centre's transport challenges "It’s like putting a new hole in your belt buckle to fight obesity building more roads will produce more car traffic."

Transport planner Becky Cox and former Swindon Borough Council cycling coordinator is passionate about the need to provide alternatives to car travel.

She argues that making cycling accessible for a wider demographic and supporting people to change their transport habits is key to this.

Becky, who volunteers for the Swindon Cycle Campaign, spoke to the Swindon Link about how promoting cycling as a realistic alternative to car use would not only help to breathe new life into the town centre but also support healthier lifestyles and improve the wider environment.

Becky explained that central government had previously backed a myriad of initiatives aimed at both promoting cycling and developing alternative transport infrastructure - but that sources 4

of funding seem to have been dramatically cut back since 2017.

“Between about 2012 and 2017 the council had a stable sustainable transport team.

There were quite a lot of projects and events running to encourage people to make a behavioural change by promoting cycling in the workplace and schools. An example being bike breakfast events, where children are offered a free, healthy breakfast if they have cycled into school.

“There were also other behaviour change initiatives like personalised travel planning where we would work with individuals and explore various options for them. And the Active Swindon Challenge where residents would be awarded points for using alternative transport instead of driving.

“The Flyer cycle routes were put in place as part of the infrastructure running along

with the work that was done with behaviour change. They developed the Western Flyer first then the Southern Flyer and then the Eastern Flyer there isn’t a Northern Flyer but there is a recommended route.

“However, at the moment it just feels like a desert and central government seems to be more focussed on road building and not on sustainable transport so there are not those opportunities to apply for funding that were previously available. All of that promotion with employers and schools has mostly ended and a lot of that momentum we built up seems to have been lost.

“One of the challenges that we face in encouraging people to cycle is that they need to see it as convenient and to feel safe out and about on the roads.

“It’s hard to encourage cycling to be an everyday thing for everyone. Ideally it needs to be so that your 80-year old grandmother is as comfortable

with cycling as your eight year old son.

“It’s been shown in studies that women are a lot more conscious and fearful of cycling in traffic. It has been shown that some ethnic minorities and disabled people also are less likely to cycle. But with the roads as they are it’s very difficult to encourage people to get out there. If you can provide routes that are convenient, attractive and direct then people are more likely to use them.”

Becky explained that as part of the drive to support changes in travel behaviour, the council still supports weekly drop in Learn to Cycle sessions at the County Ground on Friday mornings from 10am - noon.

“These free sessions are there for those who perhaps have not cycled for years or those who never learned at all. A lot of the time it’s people who tend to be older and who have lost a bit of confidence and maybe haven’t done it for

a long time. They also have a range of adapted bikes almost anyone can ride some sort of bike. There are not just standard two wheel bikes, there are recumbent bikes, hand cycles, even bikes that are adapted for wheelchair users. We need that diversity, you don’t often see disabled people cycling in the UK." One fifth of the population have some sort of disability.

In places such as Holland and Denmark more children and elderly cycle. As you get older you are more likely to acquire disability so the fact that the Dutch elderly make 24% of journeys by bike compared to the UK which is less than 1% is something to aspire to.

“We mainly got the money from central government for the projects that we did - we would apply for funding and it would run for a certain time.

"In March 2017 it all ran out - we had been doing really well but then it fell away. That’s

why I got involved in the cycle campaign on a voluntary basis, basically trying to fill in a little bit about what’s been missing.

I really enjoy empowering people to make changes.

"There are new roads being built - but for me we should be looking at the alternatives - why aren’t we looking at improved rail services?

"It’s like putting a new hole in your belt buckle to fight obesity - building more roads will produce more car traffic.

"The problem with getting into Swindon town centre by bike is that you have a network of dual carriageways surrounding it which makes it difficult to get to if you are on a bike. Commercial Road and Faringdon Road are dual carriageways with a one-way system. Two lanes going in the same direction... it’s not really needed.

"Also signage is unclear when you are cycling, it’s difficult to know what is the best way to

get into the town centre unless you have local knowledge.

So wayfinding needs to be improved.

"I think the Kimmerfield development is addressing this to some extent. They are planning a route to connect the east and west flyers and there is also a bus boulevard.

"But to do this properly, it involves taking space away from cars. There’s so much room being taken up by cars. On the street where I live, it’s a really tiny pavement and when the cars are parked and bins are out there’s barely any room to squeeze past on foot."

Becky also identified the ban on using bikes in the pedestrianised areas of the town centre.

"There’s a public space protection order - the idea is to reduce antisocial behaviour but from my point of view, the people that are causing that behaviour are still there because they ignore rules

anyway but it just makes it more difficult for people who want to use their bikes to get through the town centre, a much safer route. it makes it much more difficult.

"I gave up my car last year.

As a society we worry so much about not having a car and not being able to get to places.

You have to take things more slowly - if we do want to go out further afield we don’t live too far from the train station.

"I know it’s not for everyone but we are very concerned about environmental impact.

The things I have learned about, doing my degree, I just can’t ignore the facts.

"I’ve realised that there are always going to be critics but you have to practice what you preach.

Swindon town centre to host regular new monthly street market

Swindon's town centre is set to be filled with fresh food, handcrafted goods and live music as a new street market launches this month.

As part of a collaborative scheme between inSwindon BID and The Anonymous Travelling Market, the Sunday Street Market launched on Sunday 26 May in Havelock Square and will be held on the last Sunday of every month. inSwindon BID CEO, Di Powell said: “We are very excited about this new event and hope to build a Sunday Street Market culture, with support from the community. We would encourage local traders, craft makers and groups to get involved.

"The new market will give visitors another place in which to browse and enjoy everything the town centre has to offer on a Sunday.”

In addition to consumer goods,

the Sunday Street Market will also provide a platform for local live buskers for visitors to enjoy.

The Street Market will take place in Havelock Square from 10am to 4pm every last Sunday of the month until October 27.

Mayor Junab Ali looks back at an 'amazing year'

I was worried what people would think of my speeches.

Did I say the right things? This always played in my head.

After few weeks I had to stop thinking as to what other people think about me, because I am the Mayor not someone else, I started giving my speeches from my heart and in my own words.

I stopped being nervous and now I am confident, and people appreciated what I had to say.

Whatever engagement I attended, I always gave

When I reflect on my civic year there are many words and phrases that spring to mind.

These include: “celebrating diversity”, “the Windrush generation”, “regeneration”, “recognising and celebrating the contribution of women”, “people working together”, “volunteers making a difference” and “100 years of remembrance of end of First World War, 100 years of founding of RAF, 100 years of struggle of Suffragettes”. The energy and inspiration driving all of these and all that is good about Swindon are the people, many of whom I have had the privilege of meeting during my civic engagements.

When I took office of Mayor last year I thought I knew what I had put myself in for. Having lived in Swindon for more than 40 years and being councillor for over 10 years I thought I knew Swindon quite well, but nothing had prepared me for what the office entailed.

I started my first engagement the very next day, I was still pinching myself to check that it wasn’t a dream that I was the Mayor of Swindon representing 230,000 people!

I was very nervous and terrified when I started my Mayoral engagements. How I would speak to people? I was especially terrified of giving speeches.

Bringing communities together was an important subject for me. I knew there were communities who are living in communities within communities, so my message to all of them had been 'Yes be proud of your heritage and culture from

18 months ago to get active and see if this would help to reduce my medication dosage and my sugar levels. Since becoming the Mayor in May last year I have managed to run 5K, 10K, 15K, Swindon Half marathon and finally a Swindon marathon which involved 28 schools, businesses and ordinary people from all backgrounds and all ages in order to raise money for all my charities. This sent out a powerful message that “If I can do it anyone can”.

Now I have acquired the title of the running Mayor.

I wanted to inspire people of Swindon. I had such a wonderful time of hosting over 30 schools to visit the Mayor's Parlour, I would talk to them about the history of Swindon and the office of Mayoralty since 1900 and what the council does for the residents of Swindon.

Then I would always get a question from the school children “can I be the Mayor” and my answer always would be “yes you can, not just the Mayor but the Prime Minister of this country or anything you want to be."

I have had the most amazing year of my life, I have met such wonderful people and organisations small and large, people of all faiths and of none, people of diverse cultures and people from all over the world.

"I am so proud of Swindon and all its people and businesses and I am so proud to call Swindon my home. It has been truly an honour and privilege to have served the 230,000 people as the Mayor of Swindon 2018/2019.

My advice if any future Mayors want it would be always remember that “the office of the Mayor you hold in trust for the people of Swindon for 1 year, and that it is the people’s office and you are the people's Mayor.”

Highways England pours £4 million into canal restoration

A mile-long stretch of canal that disappeared more than half a century ago is a step closer to being restored, thanks to £4 million of funding from Highways England.

In the late 1960s the construction of a motorway and a roundabout in Gloucestershire meant the Stroudwater Navigation Canal was effectively split in two.

Since 1972, volunteers from the Cotswold Canals Trust have been working to restore derelict sections of the canal route.

And now Highways England, the company responsible for managing and maintaining England’s major A roads and motorways, is contributing funding towards the restoration of the final ‘missing mile’.

Sean Walsh, route manager for Highways England, said: “We are delighted to support this project which will restore the missing mile to the nation’s inland waterway network.

“When the work is finished there will not only be a restored canal, but also a great walking and

cycling route, and environmental improvements, all of which will attract more visitors to the area, and so help the local economy."

Jim White, Chair of Cotswold Canals Trust, said: “The Highways England award is extremely welcome and will significantly progress the overall project by bringing forward several of the major engineering tasks in the programme.”

The project, led by the Cotswolds Canals Trust and involving Stroud District Council, will restore the waterway, locks, bridges and wetlands west of Stonehouse in Gloucestershire that were lost

when the M5 and a roundabout linking the A38 and A419 were built more than 50 years ago.

The work will restore historic features near to junction 13 of the M5 including new bridges and a new lock and improve more than 30 hectares of wildlife habitats.

The project is also part of the Cotswold Canals Trust’s bigger project, which aims to restore the Cotswold canals as a navigable route from the River Severn to the River Thames.

This was awarded a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant last year to prepare surveys, detailed designs, costings and plans.

Honda 'body blow' Honda’s confirmation that it will close its Swindon manufacturing plant in 2021 - with 3,500 workers being made redundant, has been met with anger by Union officials.

Unite national officer Des Quinn said: "We have this body blow which is nothing short of a betrayal of the workforce, customers and the wider supply chain which relies on Honda Swindon for work.

Reacting to the latest announcement, Paddy Bradley Director of the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership (SWLEP), said: "Swindon has a growing, vibrant economy and we are committed to working with local businesses, partners and Government to ensure the economic shock of this announcement is minimised.

Honda’s South Marston site is perfectly suited to an advanced engineering manufacturing plant, providing high value jobs.

Honda’s workforce is well trained, highly qualified and will be a skilled workforce in high demand.”

Awards for children Young people under the care of Swindon Borough Council came together to mark their achievements at two special events.

Swindon’s Children in Care Awards recognised the hard work and success of hundreds of young people.

Awards were presented for school achievement, involvement in community projects, creativity and art, and overcoming challenges in their personal lives at two events - a party for younger children at Kidz About and an ‘Oscars’ style event at Blunsdon House Hotel.

In total, 270 children and young people were invited to collect their Achievement Awards.

GWH skin cancer warning for sun seekers

To mark Sun Awareness Week, a Macmillan Skin Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist based at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, is urging local people to stay safe in the sun and be aware of changes to their skin.

In 2018, 1,336 patients were diagnosed with skin cancer, with 91 being diagnosed with life threatening melanoma.

Specialists say that the majority of skin cancers are caused by sun damage and are using this week to share advice about the importance of protecting your skin.

Tina Phillips, Macmillan Skin Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, said: “Most people only think about sun protection when they are on holiday, or when the weather is hot, whereas it should be part of your daily routine- especially if you work outside, as you can

get UV damage on a cloudy day. Sun screen should be applied at least 20 minutes prior to going outside and the average adult should apply at least a teaspoon of sun screen to each arm, leg, and front and back of body, not forgetting half a tea spoon to the face. No matter what the sun screen directions say, sun cream should always be reapplied every two hours.

“People should also check their skin from top to toe, including nails, on a monthly basis and seek medical advice if moles change shape or colour, have an irregular outline, get bigger, start to itch or bleed. There are lots of small changes a person can make to their skin care routines which can make a big difference.”

Stuart Plane, 40, from Old Town, Swindon, was diagnosed with melanoma in 2015. He underwent three months of treatment before being given

the all-clear. Stuart receives regular check-ups at Great Western Hospital to ensure the melanoma does not return.

“My wife noticed that a mole on my leg had changed. I went to the doctors and was referred to Great Western Hospital by the end of the week. I had the mole removed under local anaesthetic and confirmation that it was a malignant melanoma.

“I then had a wide-local excision and a lymph node removed. This involved general anaesthetic but I was home the same day and it was confirmed this had not spread.

“There was no specific cause given for the melanoma other than I am a redhead and burn easily. I have always been very careful around the sun, apply plenty of sun cream and generally keep covered up.

“I cannot speak highly enough of the care and information that I have been given through this.”

From grime to shine in Swindon town centre

A campaign to bring a shine to the town centre was launched in May through a new ‘Keep it Clean’ campaign.

The cleansing of Swindon town centre is maintained daily

by Swindon Borough Council, with an additional service provided by inSwindon BID’s Caretaker, funded by town centre businesses.

The ‘Keep it Clean’ campaign is an ongoing initiative with multiple projects throughout the year with an aim to achieve long term sustainable reduction in litter in the town centre.

It includes two community clean-up events - one in May and one in September, to which, Swindon town centre businesses, visitors, residents and community groups are encouraged to come together to change behaviours, do good and raise civic pride.

The May events included litter picking, washing street

furniture, graffiti removal, housekeeping of planters and a general car park tidy up.

Other annual projects provided by inSwindon BID, include hanging baskets, vacant unit window dressing reviews, chewing gum removal and the role of the Caretaker to help continually uplift and improve the town centre.

Di Powell, Chief Executive of inSwindon said: “We all want Swindon town centre to be as welcoming as possible and we all have a role to play – as individuals and businesses. Yet we face a constant battle to keep our streets clean, and it’s a battle we cannot win without help from the public and town centre businesses.

“In 2017 we installed 64 new bins throughout the town centre, and we want to encourage everyone to think twice before throwing litter on the ground, and to take action if they see litter. Our caretaker can easily pick up five bags of litter per day, and a team from Wilko’s recently joined the inSwindon Street Team on its own town centre clean-up and collected 18 bags of litter and even a discarded Christmas tree in just one single afternoon. It was fantastic to see the team out and about, taking pride in the town centre they work in. And now, by bringing the community together, we’re hoping it will remind us all to keep our town centre clean.”

A fish and chip shop is coming to East Wichelstowe

A fish & chip shop is to open at retail parade, created as part of a new residential area.

Wichelstowe Fish Bar will open in East Wichelstowe after signing a 10-year lease for unit D, a 906 sq ft shop.

The business will join MidCounties Co-op store, which occupies the 3403 sq ft unit at the retail parade, and Wichelstowe Dental Care, which opened to patients in November last year.

James Buchanan, investment director at national commercial property and investment company LCP, which manages the five-unit retail scheme on behalf of Sheet Anchor Investments Limited, said there has been significant interest in the remaining two units.

He said: “Since SAIL acquired the retail development in August last year, we’ve been working to attract occupiers

to the development and have been pleased with the positive response and are looking forward to welcoming new tenants.

“This is a significant development in Swindon, which has been ongoing for about ten years, so the arrival of local retail facilities, which will also create local jobs, is very much to be welcomed.”

Miles Cross, Whitmarsh Lockhart, which was appointed marketing agent, said: “This is an opportunity to secure attractive retail space in the recently completed neighbourhood centre located not only close to Old Town but also on the doorstep of 880 existing homes, with a further 1,620 following closely in the next few months and years.”

GWH is inclusive

Members of the LGBTQ+ community are being represented and supported at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust thanks to the NHS Rainbow Badge Project.

Staff across the Trust are signing up to become Rainbow Warriors, and receive an NHS Rainbow Badge to wear.

The Great Western Hospital offers open, nonjudgemental and inclusive care for all staff, patients, and their families including those who identify as LGBTQ+.

The rainbow badge identifies that the wearer is there to listen to an individual without judgement and can signpost to further support if needed.

The project, originally initiated by Mr Michael Farquhar from Evelina London Children’s Hospital, is being rolled out across the NHS nationally, and Great Western Hospital is proud to have adopted the scheme.

Anyone for croquet?

Swindon Croquet Club is inviting potential new members to join in the fun.

The club is based at Moredon Playing Fields, Cheney Manor and boasts three full, immaculately maintained lawns and modern, fully equipped clubhouse. The club is Sports England accredited and holds the Clubmark.

Club members enthusiastically play both Association rules croquet and Golf croquet, socially and competitively. 2018 was the Club’s most successful golf croquet season ever, with the team becoming proud Champions of the Northern Division.

Glitter and glitz as students showcase their skills

Media Makeup students from New College showcased their skills at an exhibition in the town centre as part of a month long campaign - Love Fashion Live.

Students, joined by Deputy Mayor Kevin Parry, New College Principal Carole Kitching and course leader Gemma Mulrooney invited visitors to delve into the world of media make-up at a ribbon cutting ceremony. inSwindon BID CEO, Di Powell said: “It’s a fantastic addition to our month long campaign Love Fashion Live and is sure to entice visitors and aspiring media make-up students to experience a variety of different make-up and hair looks which can be seen across film and TV.” Love Fashion Live is a month long campaign and was first produced by The Brunel Shopping Centre in 2018.

Since then inSwindon BID and The Parade have been working in collaboration with The Brunel to bring the event to the whole of the town centre.

Other events in the month long fashion promotion included the Personalisation Station returning for a second year to The Brunel, offering 10 minute makeovers with Boots and Aqua-G offering free express treatments on The Brunel Upper Plaza from 11-3pm.

Also taking place as part of Love Fashion Live was the

Secret Style night at The Crossing, where beauty expert Gina Akers shared style and fashion tips.

Old Town’s first drink carton recycling point launches at The Core

Kris Talikowski, the owner of The Core juice bar in Swindon’s Old Town, has announced that the juice bar is now Swindon’s first recycling point for all food and drink cartons, such as those made by Tetra Pak, Elopak, and SIG Combibloc.

Until now, Swindonians have been unable to easily recycle food and drink cartons as they are not included in the town’s kerbside collections.

Kris, who created The Core 6 years ago, felt it was time to do something about it.

“Here at the Core we have always been committed to being as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible.

Through our workshops we encourage people to swap to dairy-free milk, as it is better for your health, however, these healthier products often come in cartons which cannot be easily recycled. We felt there was a disparity between

advising people to consume a product which is healthier for your body, yet not helping the environment.”

Kris contacted a company, ACE UK, the Trade Association for the UK food & drink carton industry, who can recycle this type of container and has arranged for collections to begin from The Core.

“Since we opened up a section of the cafe to launch the 'Nude Foods' Zero Waste shop, I have become even more committed to creating solutions for reducing waste and to offer better recycling.”

“This seemed like a positive thing to offer the people of Swindon and it won’t cost them anything apart from the time it takes to wash, flatten and bring in the cartons.”

Food and drink cartons are made from two or three main materials, depending on whether the carton is for short or long shelf-life products: - paperboard made from wood fibre (typically 75%)

- low density polyethylene (typically 21%) - aluminium foil (typically 4%, only in long-life packages) The collected cartons will be recycled at a dedicated facility in West Yorkshire where they are made into coreboard which is converted into tubes and cores, such as hot chocolate and gravy granule containers.

People should bring these cartons into The Core when the juice bar is open and the team will take them and ensure they are recycled. The Core is open for collections Monday to Friday 8am - 3pm & Saturday 8am - 4pm.

St Leonard's Academy 'inadequate'

St Leonard’s CE Primary Academy has been placed into special measures by education watchdog Ofsted following an inspection in March which highlighted failures of the school’s governors and leadership team.

The school, part of the Diocese of Bristol Academies Trust, was given an overall rating of ‘inadequate’ (the lowest rating) by inspectors.

Inspectors said effectiveness of leadership and management, quality of teaching, learning and assessment and outcomes for pupils was inadequate with personal development, behaviour and welfare and early years provision being identified as ‘requiring improvement’.

On the positive side, inspectors said most pupils were polite and respectful, showed a good attendance

record and understood current affairs well. The teaching of phonics was also singled out for praise by inspectors.

Inspectors said the school’s governing body had failed the school, having not provided challenge and strategic leadership.

It was also said that the governors, chaired by Clare Lindley, failed to provide appropriate leadership training for head teacher Nicky Mills.

An external review of governance should be undertaken to assess how this aspect of leadership and management could be improved the report concludes.

St Leonard’s CE Primary Academy, which has 206 pupils aged 4 to 11, converted to an academy in February 2012.

Prior to its conversion, the school was graded outstanding

by Ofsted who visited in 2010.

Headteacher Nicky Mills was appointed in September 2017.

Water lotta donations...

More than £13,000 has been given to community groups all over the county thanks to the Wiltshire Community Foundation and Wessex Water.

The community foundation was enlisted by the water company to process applications for the first round of its Community Fund and distributed £13,500 to 12 groups.

One of the recipients of the grant was Alzheimer’s Support, which was given £1,440 for its seven memory cafes across Wiltshire.

Stephany Bardzil, of the group, said the money was a huge boost for the cafes. “We are really grateful,” she said.

“We have decided we can use this to buy all the food for our cafes for the whole year.”

The cafes provide a safe space for dementia sufferers and their families where they can meet friends and enjoy entertainment and talks.

Volunteers and staff from the group ensure everyone is

made welcome. “It’s a very buzzy atmosphere just like any other cafe,” said Mrs Bardzil.

“The staff work hard to make sure the families can feel comfortable and supported.”

Other groups to receive money were: Trowbridge Arts Together (£1,500); Kington St Michael Autumn Club (£650); Flying Monk Community Projects (£1,335); Homeless charity Doorway in Chippenham (£1,088); Trowbridge Community Area Future (£1,382) ; Pound Arts Trust in Corsham (£1,462); Help Counselling Services in Trowbridge (£1,000) ; homeless group Devizes Opendoor (£1,500); Devizes Play Parties (£1,500); Young Melksham (£1,500) and Compton Bassett Cricket Club (£643) to upgrade its clubhouse and tea room.

The Wessex Water Community Fund opens for applications once a year and the next funding round is planned for January 2020.

Swindon Reds Volleyball Club celebrate a season of glory Swindon Reds Volleyball club are celebrating a successful season, with the Ladies team led to victory by Captain Joanna Moroz.

The team snatched the Ladies & Junior Wiltshire league title and were crowned champions in April 2019. Coach Maciek Kwiecien, said: “I am very proud of their achievement and am looking forward to coach them next year.”

The team made up of Karolina Krizan - Setter; Joanna Moroz - Libero; Karolina Krystofiak, Sylvie Darrieumerlou, Gergana Marinova and Magda Tylutkaoutside hitters; Nicoleta Bratescu, Sylwia Wiszniewska & Ola Moroz - middle hitters remained in pole position throughout the season.

It was a close 1st place fight with Salisbury team.

After battling the title against Pewsey, Swindon Reds A came very close to win the league.

They managed to secure a superb 2nd Place in the

Division 1 league.

They played their last match of the season at home vs Calne with a very convincing 2:1 victory.

Swindon Reds A team recently recruited new players and is very much looking forward to next year’s season.

The league season was

wrapped up by Swindon Reds B, winning the title of Wiltshire league champions Division 2.

The team led by Captain Magda Tylutka was unbeatable this season with no sets lost all season.

Volleyball is a ball-based team sport, where two teams of six players compete to win the match. Points are scored by hitting the ball over the net and grounding the ball on your opposition’s side.

It is a great sport that foster team spirit, improves hand-eye coordination, and strengthens and develops fast reflexes.

Swindon Reds Volleyball Club is Swindon’s volleyball club established since 2016.

They currently train at Abbey Park secondary school, North Swindon and have ladies, mens & mixed teams.

Plans are also in place to develop a junior team.

Theatre and roundabout light up for Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month

Swindon’s Greenbridge Roundabout and rooms at Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre were illuminated in in pink and green last month to raise awareness of Huntington’s disease.

The two Swindon sites were among many other sites such as Blackpool Tower, Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower and Althorp House, the home of Earl Spencer, to be illuminated as part of theHuntington’s Disease Association's #LightItUp4HD campaign.

The Huntington’s Disease Association is a national charity supporting people affected by Huntington’s disease across England and Wales. Huntington’s is a rare neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system and is caused by a faulty gene passed down through families with each child of a parent with Huntington’s 16 swindonlink.com n June 2019 S June Master pages.indd 16

having a 50% chance of inheriting it. Described as having motor neurone disease, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease all at the same time, Huntington’s disease causes changes in the brain affecting movement, feelings, thinking, eating and speech. There are around 8,000 people in the UK with Huntington’s and around 32,000 at risk of developing it.

“We are more than happy to facilitate this for The Huntington’s Disease Association and I’m sure it will be a brilliantly eye catching

lighting display.”

Paul Wyse, Building and Technical manager at Swindon’s Wyvern theatre said, “As part of our community spirit we’re always eager to help worthwhile causes whenever we can. Huntington’s affects so many families, including many in Wiltshire that we were more than happy to Light Up the internal rooms of the Wyvern theatre.

Studley Grange puts the spotlight on British farming and food production

As the need for food increases and people become more aware of where their food comes from, the demand for locally produced, high welfare standard, meat products is ever growing.

Studley Grange Butterfly World & Farm Park, are playing their part not only to support British farming but also to educate visitors on the importance of high levels of animal welfare and knowing where their food has come from.

So far this year Studley Grange Butterfly World & Farm Park have had 2 successful lambing periods and are also just coming to the end of a very successful kidding period.

The Dorset ewes were sheared last month.

The Politics Page Tories keep control of council as Labour fails to make gains Swindon Borough Council stays blue after Labour failed to make headway in the local elections.

Swindon's Labour Group will be licking their wounds this morning after failing to make any gains at the borough council elections. The Conservatives even managed to increase their majority from three seats to five after a shock gain in Penhill & Upper

Stratton. This came after former Labour councillor Teresa Page stood for the seat as an independent having left the Labour group in protest against the leadership.

Labour had stood Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Kate Linnegar in her place and were expecting to win the seat but this only served to split the vote meaning that Tory candidate David Oladapo was able to

gain the seat.

In total 19 seats were up for grabs with the Tories able to hold onto 12 of their seats with Labour making no gains on the Tories and the Conservative gain in Penhill meant they increased their majority.

Although Swindon remained under Conservative control two former Lib Dem Eastcott councillors Dave Wood and Mike Evemy made headlines in being elected in their

new home towns with Dave becoming the councillor for none other than MP Jacob Rees-Mogg as the Lib Dems

took control of Bath and North East Somerset Council for the first time. Mike Evemy is now on the Cotswold District Council overturning 16 years of Conservative rule.

One of Swindon’s greatest annual events happened in May namely the Old Town beer festival which took place in the wonderful surroundings of Christchurch. The festival, now in its seventh year, saw 40 cask beers and 30 ciders.

Our town’s amazing history is no better illustrated than through its cemeteries.

Scheme to help support town's homeless was a success Swindon Borough Council Leader Cllr David Renard (Con) After a significant number of years sitting on the council, I can say with confidence that the vast majority of people who run for public office do so for one reason: to make a positive difference to peoples’ lives.

It is therefore extremely rewarding when something that helps our town’s most vulnerable people is deemed a success.

Temporary Winter Housing Provision scheme, which took an identified group of homeless people who had been unable to engage with the support we offer all year round, and gave them shelter and intensive support with the aim of securing permanent accommodation for them.

The project was located at The Haven at the former Riverside School site off Queens Drive, and has been run by the wonderful people at Swindon Night Shelter.

I am pleased to say that some of the guests who took

part in this year’s project have already found secure accommodation.

Six people have successfully been housed and a further two have even managed to find their own accommodation.

I am also pleased to report that six people who took part in last year’s scheme have managed to maintain their tenancies. I would like to thank everybody who was involved with the scheme, especially Cllr Cathy Martyn, the Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Safety, who, along with her colleagues in Housing, have put in an enormous amount of time and effort to ensure the scheme could be a success.

A poetry column by Maurice Spillane: a poem from Bhutan I’m running a Marathon in Bhutan and, believe it or not, a postage stamp was the catalyst.

When I was young I came across stamps from Bhutan, which were colourful and all shapes. My favourite was a circular stamp that looked like an old penny. In the centre was a hole so you could put it on your record player, drop the needle and it would play the national anthem of Bhutan.

I told my grandchildren that story recently and they thought it was hilarious.

Anyway, I’ll be in Bhutan as you read this. First, a week of trekking in the Himalayas to a remote temple each day and camping at 4,500m.

A week should cover acclimatisation, then down to 2,500m for the Marathon.

Bhutanese are the happiest people in the world, smoking is banned, men and women are equal, and visitor numbers are limited. I’m lucky to get a visa. So many positives, it could be Shangri-La. Here are a few lines to set the scene from Ap Chuni Dorji, a yak-herder: If I were to explain my place and paths, It is on the high snow-capped mountains And the highland meadow of sershog flower Where flower buds blossom.

There, my home is.

I graze on mountain grass,

And drink fresh water of glacial lakes.

Swindon Lives WITH: Ultra cyclist Ian To

Swindon Wheelers ultra cyclist Ian To was gearing up this month to beat the world record for riding the 838 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats the ultimate challenge in British cycling.

Following an abortive attempt last year, Ian is currently training in Croatia to beat the incredibly challenging current Guiness world record of 44 hours 4 minutes, set by Gethin Butler 17 years ago.

His attempt is slated for some time from mid May to July 1st.

Gethin Butler's time was beaten on June 17th 2018 when Michael Broadwith cycled the route in 43 hours, 25 minutes and 13 seconds, and although that set a new Roads Record Association - it does not count as a Guiness record because he had to change bikes during the attempt. The Guiness rules only allow for a single bike.

Taking on the challenge is very much a team effort, with members of the Swindon Wheelers Club throwing their weight behind Ian’s attempt and providing a support crew and helping to crowdfund for the bid.

Ian, a 39-year-old business strategist from Liddington, said: “I'm proud to announce that my club, the Swindon Wheelers Cycling Club, will be crewing, preparing, publicising the club's attempt at LEJOG (I'll have the simple job of riding the bike).

All things being well, we can be confident of success with

a strong, large and coherent team, although it will be an extremely tough ordeal, with many sacrifices - world records don't fall by trivial efforts!

“Coming up to the Club's centenary in 2023, it will be a great way to create a new story, new history, and take new records, to add to its prestigious past, such as the 1956 and 1958 24 hour records by Swindon Wheeler, Den White.

Breaking the record is only possible by cycling non-stop, with Ian aiming to cover the 838 miles in less than 43 hours and 25 minutes - riding at an average speed of more than 20mph without sleep.

During the gruelling ride, Ian will climb more than the height of Mount Everest and burn 35,000 calories. As part of the bid, the father of three will also be attempting to break the national 1,000 mile record which currently stands at 55 hours and 59 minutes.

Suzuki Jimny: More fun than it should be

The Suzuki Jimny has been around since 1970 in various forms, originating as the diminutive LJ10, and is beloved of off-road enthusiasts the world over and largely ignored by the general public. If, in this modern era, we are still allowed to have fun with motoring then the general public don’t know what they are missing, especially as this little beauty won the Urban Car of the Year accolade at this year’s World Car Awards among other garnered gongs of approval.

The Jimny is not big and it is not clever. It has the basic technology we have come to expect but no more than that. It is not by any means a motorway cruiser. What it does have in spades is the DNA of a mountain goat and the rugged performance reliability of Brian Blessed.

On And Off The Road Built around a robust ladder frame with a wheel at each

corner allowing for three ample body angles, the Jimny comes with an ‘AllGrip Pro’ switchable two/four-wheel drive system with a low-range transfer gear.

Power comes from a 1.5L petrol engine. Off road the car is supremely agile and will deliver the goods when you need it most. On the road things change a bit, it has to be said. You simply cannot engineer that level of gnarly, mud-plugging ability without compromise. Emissions of 154g/km or fuel economy averaging around 37mpg for the manual gearbox (there’s

an auto too) cannot match the best of the family hatchback crowd and the ride is best described as rugged.

That said, the Jimny could make for a quirky left-field urban car choice.

The small size, high driving position and chunky bodywork all make navigating an urban environment a piece of cake as the Jimny shrugs off speed bumps, potholes and awkward kerbs, as you would brush away a fly.

On The Inside Although having a slightly shorter wheelbase than the previous model, the space

inside has been well utilised – in the front. There’s as much room as any small hatch and the hard-wearing interior and simple controls can take a beating.

Where things fall down is in the back. The rear seats are fine for children and for adults over shortish distances but the boot space with the rear seats up is laughable.

A decent-sized baguette and that’s your lot. With the seats down, there’s much more space for luggage for two. Of course, a roof rack could be used, which would make the car more versatile.

There are two levels of trim: SZ4 and SZ5; the latter having a few more conveniences and connectivity plus alloy wheels instead of the ‘steelies’ on the base model.

Prices start at £15499. Take the rough with the smooth. It’s more fun than it should be.

Music, mythical creatures and family-fun set for Stratton Festival East Swindon's biggest day festival is set to return next month at Grange Leisure Centre.

Stratton Festival will be back for its seventh year, Saturday 7 July from midday to 10.30pm. The festival has proven popular with locals over the years but also attracts residents from all across Swindon for a day of family-fun, furry entertainment, activities for children and a cider and gin tent accompanied by local live bands. Street food will also be available throughout the day including a butcher's BBQ, Jamaican curry and fresh samosas.
