Climbers ready for Kilimanjaro in aid of genetic eye disease

Three intrepid treckers set off for Tanzania in mid-October to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money and awareness of the genetically inherited disease Retinitis Pigmentosa, for which is there is no cure or treatment.

Ian Lawrence, Becky Prince and their friend Daniel Hopkins who has RP have been training hard over the last year as well as raising money to take part in the expedition.

Dan has been climbing the stairs of his house as well hiking up hills around Wanborough where we live.

“We’ve also been doing specific exercises, though you never know how the altitude will affect us.”

Dan has quite limited peripheral vision and is registered as SSI (severely sight impaired), struggles in crowded environments and is virtually blind in the dark.

Ian said: “We went to Ben Nevis which was incredible preparation for both of us. Because of RP, Dan found the terrain really difficult.”
