Dissident speaks about human rights A prominent Burmese dissident and human rights campaigner Wai Hnin will be in Swindon on Thursday 21 October for this year’s One World Week Amnesty International Talk. She will speak about the dreadful human rights situation in her country and the action that can be taken by people in the UK to support those fighting courageously for freedom and democracy in Burma. Wai Hnin has first hand knowledge of the struggle for democracy and human rights. She is the daughter of a political prisoner and Amnesty Prisoner of Conscience Ko Mya Aye, one of the organisers of the 1988 pro democracy uprising. The first time Wai Hnin saw her father was in a jail cell. He was arrested again for his role in the 2007 uprising and is serving a 65 year sentence. Terry and Theresa Davies were the first people to move to the area in March 1976. They had hardly any time to settle in when West Swindon’s first baby Janice arrived three weeks later. The Davies household, and those of their neighbours who arrived that summer, were surrounded by a huge building site as houses in Markenfield and Longthorpe Close were being built. A mobile shop would stop by several times a week before one opened in a hut, and a church worker would bring a typewriter to help send letters on behalf of families. Residents without a car faced a trek to the nearest bus stop on the old A420 Swindon to Wootton Bassett road on the other side of the present Tewkesbury Way. Thirty four years later the Davies clan is much bigger. Two daughters and a son followed Janice and in time four grandchildren appeared. A fifth is on the way. Theresa said they’ve enjoyed living in Toothill and the need to move somewhere else was never that great. “We’ve thought about going from time to time; we were quite a long way down the line in 2008 but the recession started and we decided we were happy to stay in Swindon where the children are.” Christine lives at home whilst Kate, Janice and Michael live closeby. Family get-togethers are a regular feature for the Davies family. “This part of Toothill built in the first few years is a good area. It’s quite settled and like us some of the original families are still here,” said Terry. “There isn’t trouble but we’re not very impressed by the condition

of the play parks. They used to be around every corner but most have been removed or not looked after.” Terry and Theresa welcomed the allocation of £1million by the National Lottery through the Big Local fund. Toothill is one of the first fifty of 150 areas identified as having obstacles towards community improvement. Both are taxi drivers for V cars and are in a good position to hear comments about the area. “It’s now quite old and needs improvements but nowadays I get very few negative comments, not like in the first few years when many Swindon people didn’t have a kind word to say about all the expansion going on,” said Theresa. “In fact it’s amazing how West Swindon as a whole has developed. We’re very impressed by the range of groups we take people to by taxi.” But she’s worried that the council will try to get hold of the lottery money to pay for things that it’s responsible for, like cutting down hedges or picking up litter. She said, “we’d like to see more spent on young people at Toothill Farm youth club and perhaps improving play areas. It’s important that residents have a very clear say about how money is spent. “It’s important the right projects are chosen; the last thing you want is money being spent on the wrong things and creating resentment in the community.” The Big Local funding will start in 2011 after a trust has been chosen to administer the money which includes setting up a process of local discussion on projects that will benefit the community in the long term.

JK Rowling’s £10million donation to Edinburgh University to set up a research centre in memory of her mother Ann, who died after suffering from multiple sclerosis, has been acclaimed by the manager of the Swindon MS Centre. “Her gift is incredibly generous,” said Jackie Wray. “JK Rowling has been a friend of the Swindon centre in the past, when on two occasions she has donated signed copies of her Harry Potter books. Before the jump mother of two Jane Gray, 53, said the thrill overcame her fear of heights. “I read about the jump in the MSRC newsletter and thought, ‘why not – it’s something a bit different.’ “Whilst I’m quite disabled by the illness I like finding things to keep the brain going. It seemed fun at the time. I’ve got lots of friends and family coming to watch the jump. My three carers have a dark sense of humour; they said they’re going to be there to ensure that they have a job afterwards.” Jane, of Old Shaw Lane, was diagnosed with MS in 1995 and has been in a wheelchair for the last 13 years. She only has the use of her left arm, but it has not stopped her living life to the full. Young neighbour Michael Doust, 12, was impressed by Jane’s commitment and contributed his pocket money to her fundraising. He said, “I think she’s very brave and wanted to help her get as much money as possible.” Jane’s fundraising has taken on an international flavour with oldest daughter Bec galvanising friends

The 20 year old playgroup moved from the now closed Upper Shaw Farm social centre into brand new community rooms at the school earlier in the year and was rated good by Ofsted in May, even though it temporarily had only two members of staff. Toy library and toddler group opens

Phoenix Toy Library, a Swindon charity which has been running for 26 years, feared they would have to close earlier in the year when they struggled to find a venue willing to include storage. But with the reopening of Freshbrook Community Centre their troubles were over.

Phoenix Toy Library chair Lysanne Dorrell, said, “the community centre was a last minute lifeline, and they’ve been great – nothing’s been too much trouble.” The library has over 500 toys on offer, ranging from baby equipment to products aimed at eight year olds including large items like slides and ride-ons. British Pathe ‘filming Swindon and the World’ Mayor to welcome historic newsreels about the town at library talk organised by The Link on Thursday 14 October, 7.30pm

The Mayor of Swindon coun Rex Barnett will officially launch the initiative by British Pathe to provide easy online access to the news reports and introduce Mark Harris, head of digital marketing, who will talk about British Pathe and its contribution to 20th Century British history, illustrated by newsreel reports from Swindon. The British Pathe films reported in the September Link impressed the mayor as many showed scenes from his boyhood and time working in the town’s railway works and he agreed to host an evening for anybody interested in the town’s history in the movies. He said, “the famous crowing cockerel at the beginning of a film show heralded the start of a night out at the cinema, featuring important news from around the world, some tragic, some interesting and nearly always ending with an amusing item.

A giant collage by children at Shaw’s Brook Field Primary is now on display in the corridor next to the offices of Swindon Council’s top councillors and officials. Eight classes using different media illustrated the 3 metre high work which interprets David Hockney’s painting Going Up Garrowby Hill. Art coordinator Claire Calthorp said Brook Field has a long tradition of displaying very large artworks in the school hall and her husband Gavin, the council’s communications director, had suggested it could be mounted at the Civic Offices. “They’ve asked me to coordinate displays of school work in different areas of the Civic and I’ll be contacting other art specialists about the opportunity to showcase their school’s work.” Alexander Sullivan said he was impressed to see the work on display. “There is colouring with pastels, tissue, glitter, mosaic, felt and quilling. It looks very bright where they’ve put it. We all feel privileged the council asked us to show it off.” The collage is behind a secure door. Call the council switchboard on 463000 to ask to see it. Swindon schools’ cycling success

As British children become more inactive, pupils in Swindon are bucking the trend by cycling to school. Nearly 35 per cent of children at schools in the town that work with sustainable transport charity, Sustrans, regularly cycle to school – over 17 times the national average. More cycling sessions for the over 50s Free cycling courses for the over 50s have proved so popular in Swindon that organisers are adding more sessions to cope with demand. The Saturday morning sessions run over 8 weeks at the County Ground by CTC Cycle Champions and Swindon Council have seen many people continuing to cycle in their groups long after their courses have finished. The courses provide a gentle introduction to cycling and are aimed at those people who have never ridden a bike before or those who haven’t ridden for many years. Plucky MS sufferer Samantha Mulvey certainly likes a challenge. Since she became the 250th member to join the Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclorosis in May, she’s been busily fundraising with a tandem parachute jump and being carried for 13 miles across the Brecon Beacons. In October she’ll pull on a toga to be pushed by a troop of Roman legionnaires from the Les Slinn All Stars running team. In the last year Les, running for five days across the Sahara desert in April, and with members of the Les Slinn Fitness Studio, has raised nearly £5,000 for the therapy centre.

Weekly walkers wanted

Volunteers are being sought to lead weekly walks for people of all ages and abilities. Swindon Health Walks, run in conjunction with Walking for Health and Natural England, aim to make it easier for people to access supported walks in their communities. There are nine free weekly walking groups in the town running from Monday to Friday and everyone who takes part can walk at a pace to suit them. Each one is led by volunteers who have previously attended a free walk leader training day, but more are needed. The next training session takes place on Monday 27 September at the County Ground Lifestyle Centre, from 10am until 3pm. Palna, run by the Delhi Council for Child Welfare, looks after about 2,500 homeless, physically disabled and mentally challenged children. So far he has raised £5,500 for Palna which has paid for vaccines, a new roof for the orphanage and a range of medical and educational equipment. Over 2,000 people made the trek to Wichelstowe on 12 September to celebrate the Wilts & Berks Canal’s 200th anniversary and discover the 4km of brand new and restored canal to the south of the town.

Canoes and kayaks were busy in the canal as well as the Wilts & Berks Canal trust’s brand new trip boat providing visitors a glimpse of what it might have been like to travel into the town in the 19th Century. One day the volunteers working on different sections of the canal hope to join the Kennet & Avon Canal to the River Thames. Trust chairman John Laverick, said, “our vision is to restore the whole waterway, and what Swindon Borough Council is doing with the canal at Wichelstowe is tremendous.� Ray Aldridge, chair of Swindon Branch of WBCT said, “it was a fantastic event. It was a real family outing and everyone enjoyed the day. She said, “we reckoned we needed about £10,000 to be able to create the garden, and with the very generous help of so many businesses and private donors we’re going to be well on the way to planting the garden at the beginning of October. “There are so many people to say thank you to. A team of volunteers came from Zurich on the wettest day in August and worked all day in the driving rain. “We’re so grateful for their commitment and they did a brilliant job. They also gave us a £3,000 grant for all the ground work. “Garden designer Jill Blackwood donated her design services, and

as we do the planting we’ll really start seeing her work come to life. “We also want to thank Sodexho who laid the path for free, and John O’Brien at Education Support Swindon Ltd who arranged for the paving and sleepers for the garden. “BBC Radio Swindon, Purton in Bloom, the 147 Snooker Club in Swindon and John Lewis have also supported the cause very generously. We know times are tight but the willingness to help has been phenomenal.” Artist Gordon Dickinson is completing a memorable sculpture representing two children supporting each other. Rotary to bring support to epilepsy sufferers in Swindon

The first meeting of a three year project to support a group for sufferers of epilepsy and their families was attended by twenty five people, 9 of whom suffer from different forms of the disease. The project being led by the Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown aims to raise awareness, provide advice and information and point of communication between people affected by epilepsy. Rotarian Paul Parfrey said he and fellow members were struck by the energy and enthusiasm for the initiative. “We had a four year old boy with his parents and a retired gentleman at the meeting. It was very moving

how people spoke about how epilepsy affects their lives, particularly the loneliness many experience as a result of the epilepsy. “Many ideas were put forward which my Rotary colleagues are looking at, but the lack of awareness of epilepsy, its symptoms and effects must be one of the priorities for this project.” Future plans will be publicised in The Link. Fairtrade business lunch to promote better deal for the less well off Local businesses and schools are being urged by the Swindon Fairtrade Coalition to stock or use Fairtrade products to make a difference to the life chances of the world’s poor. To help get the message across the coalition is holding a Fairtrade Business lunch on Thursday 28 October, 12.30pm to 1.30pm at St Joseph’s College hosted by the Mayor of Swindon and Lord Joel Joffe, a founder of Oxfam. Attendees will be treated to a Fairtrade lunch served by local caterers and listen to Ben Speed of the Fairtrade Foundation talking about the benefits of Fairtrade for businesses and how making a commitment directly helps the farmers who grow the foodstuffs.
