West/North team inspector Adrian Burt and PC Paul Matthews holding up the exclusion order with George Tweed Garden residents Young people have gathered in large numbers, kicking footballs at the church and shop windows, being abusive to passers-by, throwing bins and rubbish around, attempting to start fires, shouting, threatening, intimidating and physically assaulting people entering and leaving shops, fighting amongst themselves as well as riding pedal cycles and mopeds on the pavement. People living in George Tweed Gardens have been terrorised, stones and mud have been thrown at their flats from the adjacentplay area, they have had to put up with screaming late at night and mopeds being ridden up and down their road. Resident Cheryl Orton said, "there is a group of mindless idiots who don't give a damn for the community." The dispersal order means the police can order two or more peoplc who are intimidating, harassing, alarming or causing distress to members of the public to leave the area and not return for 24 hours, Anyone who fails to comply can be arrested. The order covers the village cen-

tre and the surrounding area, including George Tweed Gardens residential home and Ridge Green Medical Centre. Newly arrived team inspector Adrian Burt said, "the dispersal order surrounding Shaw Village Centre gives us more powers to move on people intent on causing problems. "The dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team will increase patrols in this area. Those refusing to disperse will face arrest and prosecution." The Link has reported annual meetings since 2003 between the police, local traders, councillors and George Tweed Garden residents to discuss the problems. Exact details of the design are not yet known, but as an indication, Karen Jones of npowerrenewables said, "a 2.3 megawatt turbine would produce 1,000 homes-worth of energy and would prevent the release of 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually." She is optimistic that the proposal will be well received as sur-

Coun Gary Perkins said he had heard the rumours as well and agreed that Link Centre was both well used and highly regarded as both a local and regional sports facility. "The council is reviewing its leisure and recreation strategy and we are very keen to find out what the people of Swindon want. We are not going to consider knocking Link Centre down unless it is to be replaced by something better. "Swindon Council is keen to contribute to the 2012 Olympics and we are under a lot of pressure from the swimming clubs to build a 50 metre pool for the talent in the town and perhaps as a training venue for teams for other countries in the run up." However Steve Spence from Middleleaze expressed dismay about the secretive consultations on future recreation provision carried out by the council over the summer. "I stumbled across the recreation survey on the council's web site, but don't recall any publicity for it through other means. It referred to a supercentre but did not ask for views on the future of Oasis or Link Centre. "I have grave worries about the council's intention."

First day of calm at Orchid Vale Just under 100 nursery, reception and older children arrived at Orchid Vale Primary School in Haydon End, one of three brand new primary schools which opened on 11 September. Dressed in smart blue jumpers emblazoned with a circular logo portraying the rare Ordiis Morio, the green winged orchid, which

Mystical King helps Red Oaks have a fantastic opening King John the Eleventh was discovered asleep in a room by children soon after they arrived on their first day at Red Oaks Primary School at the North Swindon Learning Campus. Within moments they were enthralled and engaged in a day long story that culminated in the planting of a magic silver acorn - a seed of learning - at the school's front entrance which, next morning, had grown into a 12 foot tree of knowledge. Schools come together at Moredon Moredon's separate infant and junior schools reopened on 11 September as a combined primary school with nursery, under one head teacher Lauren Connor. There were cheers when Ms Connor asked the 388 children in the first assembly if they were the luckiest children in Swindon. There was a big thumbs up also for being the smartest children in Britain. The August Link explained the symbolism behind the school's new balloon logo which represents the ideals and principles that are being strived for at Moredon. After the assembly the children celebrated with an extra long break so that they could discover all the features in their new playground, which includes use of an enclosed all-weather pitch. No longer will there be boys rampaging around a shared space chasing a ball. The school also has a counselling room and its own counsellor Tracie McGrory who will help children overcome barriers to learning and will work with families in need of support. Ms Connor said she was delighted to be in the new building, to the north of the old school on Moredon Road. "It's a wonderful day for the whole community."

Kid-Ex is supermum's new baby So many people ask Swindon supermum Sue Povey for advice about bringing up children that she's organised a mother and baby show to answer some of their questions. With 15 children and 26 year's worth experience of motherhood, ' Sue admits that she takes her childrearing knowledge for granted now. "I can remember way back when I was firstpregnant. As a nevv mum it was daunting; f getting the right information and products can leave you bewildered and confused." Working with her sister, Barbara Paul, she has organised a mother and baby show called, Kid-Ex. The event will be a one stop shop, information and entertainment show for all mumsto-be, parents and carers with babies and children of all ages. Headstarts Nursery, based in Westlea, has expanded to open a nursery at the new Barnado's Childrens Centre at Robert le Kyng Primary School, off Westcott Place. Headstarts were asked to branch out at very short notice but rose to the challenge and the nursery was ready to welcome children at the start of term in early September. Owner Sara Vare congratulated her staff for all their hard work. "We were invited by Sure Start to take on the contract to run the nursery at the children's centre very late in the day. The staff have done a fantastic job and I'd particularly like to thank Alison Barrett for all her hard work developing the new nursery, as well as managing Westlea." Exhibition on offer to spread town's history A remarkable set of photographs first publicised in the April Linkis now available in exhibition form and can be borrowed for display at venues around the town. The pictures taken by Roy Nash portray the last 20 years of the town's railway works before it shut in March 1986. Most remained in Roy's archives until he was persuaded by West Swindon librarians to put on a display which was a tremendous success. Twenty years on, Swindon Ocotal Link (SOL) is still dedicated to offering support and friendship to the town of Ocotal in Nicaragua. Bruce Clarke was part of the original group and has been involved with SOL since formaly twinning took place in 1990. He explained how donations are used to give practical support in Ocotal. "Initially we were attempting to direct cash to projects we felt were beneficial. We would send money for various groups but had no representative there. This wasn't very successful in terms of the impact of our funding.

In 1986 a small group from Swindon interested in Central America had a vision to raise awareness of the situation there and show solidarity with the people.

"About 8 years ago. we decided to set up Fundacion SOL and pay a worker in Ocotal. From then on we have deferred to their judgement, we raise the money and they decide how to spend it." A number of key projects are run in Ocotal. Bursaries are given to buy clothes and books for children so that they can go to school. Education is free in Nicaragua but only those with clothes, shoes and books can attend. In addition. SOL supports a kindergarten, which also serves as a feeding station for the poorest children, and an old people's home. SOL's mission is the development and maintenance of lifelong friendships between the people in Swindon and Ocotal. Bruce said that they have found that the best way to get real interest is to take people to the town. A group from Swindon will be travelling to Ocotal in 2007 to visit projects and stay with local peo-

Netballers search for sponsorship to build on success Since The Link publicised the formation of an Abbey Meads netball club in 2004, membership has grown from seven players to nearly fifty.

And after a first year in theSwindon netball league which resulted in promotion from the fourth to the third division, the club is now running three competitive teams. Training takes place twice a week come rain or shine on the all weather court at Abbey Meads Primary School. Thursday mornings during term time from 9.30am to 1lam is more of a stretch-out session for women who want to get fit and return to the game in the company of others who want to have fun. There is

also a free creche which has to be booked. The competitive teams practice on Tuesdays, 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The cost of either session is ÂŁ3. Relaying message of hope for cancer cure

Over 200 people are expected to take part in Swindon's first Cancer Reseach UK Relay for Life at Lydiard Park on 30 September starting at midday.

MASSAGE THERAPY

Teams of between 8 and 15 will take turns to walk round the relay track for 24 hours to celebrate the lives of people touched by cancer and the funds raised before the event. The first lap of the day will be completed by cancer survivors who, as honoured guests, will be treated to a special reception at the end of their walk. By taking part they will be marking the progress made in cancer treatment thanks to research. Organisers are looking forward to a day and night packed with entertainment and activities with a real party atmosphere and want as many Swindon people as possible to join in.

After dark, candles will be lit in a poignant Candle of Hope ceremony. Placed in small bags bearing personal messages, the candles will line the track and spell the words 'hope' and 'cure.' Walkers on the track will pause to hear a reading and observe a one minute silence. Salsa and supper at Supermarine Live music from Latin American bands will have everyone swaying to the beat and shaking all the loose bits at an event on 21 October. "My Salsa, Merengue, Tango and Salsa fit classes have been attracting more and more people. It's popular because it makes you feel very happy inside. You smile, you're more relaxed — and it's sexy! "Salsa is for all abilities; you need the same basic co-ordination as for walking. Some people are still a bit reserved about trying it out, but after four years teaching here I think I know how to get self-conscious English people up and enjoying themselves." Swindon Dolphins received an early season boost at the start of a new campaign with Commonwealth swimmer Chris Jones putting pen to paper in the latest transfer coup for the Milton Road-based club. In March this year, Jones, 24, represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Australia. Preparations took him to the US Open in Alabama, where he claimed bronze and silver in his first international meet, before moving to Perth, Australia for three weeks acclimatisation last Christmas. In Melbourne, Jones came tenth in 50 metres breaststroke final and took a bronze with the men's 4 x 100 metres medley relay team. He has set aside a promising accountancy career to train full time in order reach the 2008 Great

Britain team. Scotland coach Chris Martin believes the Dolphin's training programme under coach Andi Manley will see him realise that dream. Scottish Swimming will continue to support Jones in his quest to reach the top with training camps and overseas competitions, whilst he provides Dolphin with a power swimming in domestic competition. As Swindon's only Swim 21 club, the standards set by Jones will help the Dolphin progress from Skill Development level to the highest accolade, Performance.
