The waiting list for a specialised wheelchair from the NHS and Social Services is a long one and Sally needs to maintain her contact with the outside world. After she's paid back a loan from the sale of her car, she will have some money to put towards a pow ered chair, but needs help to reach her target. Dealing with the difficult questions of life Susan White met the Bishop of Swindon Rt Revd Dr Lee Rayfield for the September edition. This month she asks why Swindon needs a bishop and gets Bishop Lee's views on a range of controversial topics in the church and in society A 'missionary bishop'? What's that all about? In a BBC Radio Swindon interview soon after I arrived I was asked why the town needs a bishop if most people don't go to church. My reply was: 'Well, that's why you need one!' Many people don't understand about the life and teaching of Jesus and especially the significance of his death and resurrection for their lives. We need to show them that the Christian faith is a vibrant thing that speaks to all ages and all peoples.

Mission is a big area. It includes social justice, the environment: our concern for the world and its needs. We have lots of opportunities to bring something fresh. Life has been described as a series of overwhelmings - like when the news of the Olympic bid was followed by the London bombings. People are living with this kind of thing every day and they can become desensitized. Our role is to provide support - to hold the tensions of the world - celebrate with them and be mournful too.

Bypass enquiry gets going A public inquiry to consider the arguements for and against the long awaited Blunsdon bypass is planned to start on Wednesday 26 October at King Edwards Place. Foxhill, Swindon. The 3.3 km £65 million Highways Agency scheme involves realigning the A41 9 and getting rid of Turnpike roundabout, the filling station and Happy Eater restaurant. The new road will then run to the west into a cut between Abbey Stadium and the houses fronting the existing road, avoiding the traffic lights at the top of Blunsdon Hill. It rejoins the existing road at the bottom of the hill by Chapel Farm. Leaving or joining the new road is complicated. On the north bound route access is at the Turnpike junction close to Cricklade Road. Going south vehicles will cross the carriageway at the B401 9 road to Highworth, half a mile away. Should the planning inspector agree the road goes ahead, building work is likely to start in Autumn 2006. To see the plans for the road they are on display at the bypass information centre at Durban House, Tadpole Lane, Blunsdon on Wednesdays 1 Oam to 4pm.

His work experiences and the death of his partner five years ago combined to give him a vision. "When I left Westlea I realised what a privilege it is to teach in Britain, but I was ignorant of education elsewhere,” he said. "Story hacks have taken me all over the planet, mainly to wealthy countries like the USA and United Arab Emirates, and also where education is developing. After my partner died I realised I had to offer my passion for education to somewhere which is struggling to improve. Neil made contact with the Marlborough Brandt Group which has built close links with the village of Gunjur in the Gambia over many years. But setting up Corner to Learn and back problems prevented him from going there until last year. The decision to make a commitment was not difficult explained Neil. "It was an amazing experience to meet people who have so little, but make you feel they have everything. It is such a close knit society where family is very important. Yet the average life span is 47 years and many children die from preventable diseases before they are five. Nevertheless there are around 300 pre-school children in Gunjur." Neil is aware that a sudden injection of sponsorship will raise expectations which cannot be sustained when children go on to primary school with poor resources and very high class numbers. Youngsters at Bridlewood Primary School returned to school in September to see felt art work they helped to create in June on display. Artist Hilary Clash from Common Platt spent two days at the school showing children how to turn sheeps wool into felt. "They all loved splashing up to their arms in soapy water to wash and tease out the wool fibres into shapes to be included in the final work; the teachers enjoyed themselves as well," said Hilary. Over the summer holidays Hilary formed the pieces made by children into large wall hangings which she brought back to a school assembly before hanging them in classrooms and corridors.

The Evening Star Quilters, named after the last steam engine to be built at Swindon Works, is organised by Joy Jansen from Westlea who said the long running Poppydown Quilters had become so popular that she offered to launch an offshoot. "The waiting list for Poppydown was getting longer and people were getting frustrated because they couldn't join. There is a lot of enthusiasm for quilting and patchwork and we're keen to attract experienced quilters and newcomers. Work has begun at Lydiard Park on the £5.3 million historic restoration project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, but children still have time to vote for the equipment they would like to see included in a brand new play park to be built between the visitor centre and the playing fields The Lydiard Project Team have identified a range of fun, new play and climbing equipment, which they hope will keep boys and girls happy and active for hours. Designs showing the play equipment have been on display in the visitor centre over the summer and 200 children have expressed their preferences. Eighty-nine per cent say the new play area will be 'very good fun.'

The designs receiving enthusiastic reactions are the Triaction Special, the Miram, the Giant Octonet, the Birds Nest Swing and the Large Cableway. It's not too late to have your say. The plans are on display at the Lydiard Park Visitor Centre until 1 6 October when the project team will tot up the results. The chosen equipment will be reported later in the year.

Swindon Wide September surprise for Shaw reader Maurice Cole from Jersey Park was taken aback when he opened the September Link to see a photograph of his father, also called Maurice, pictured playing with the Swindon based Johnny Stiles Big Band. "I was really delighted to see my dad in a photo I'd not seen before," said Maurice. 'He ran his own bands during the 1950s then joined Johnny Stiles on trumpet for about five years in the early 1960s.

"Big band music was really popular in those days with lots of competitions and dances. I used to go to quite a few as a teenager and helped carry the equipment. "I recognise many of the faces of the players in the picture, but cannot remember their names." The Link has provided Maurice with copies of the picture, one of which he will be sending to his sister in Australia.

Povey clan grows The Povey family of Grange Park turned out in force on 3 September to celebrate the wedding of Charlie, 21, to Craig Preston. Sue and Ian Povey's 14 other children were all bridesmaids and ushers at St Mary's Church, Lydiard Park, whilst their four grandchildren were also there, including one born five days before the big event. Great grandparents John and Sheila from Old Town and lots of friends also squeezed into the church for the ceremony which was followed by a reception at Freshbrook Community Centre. "It was a lovely church service, following an exciting week with the arrival of Hannah's baby daughter." said Sue. 'The weather was very kind to us, so it was also a great opportunity to be able to take photos of the whole family together."

Loxton, 1857 to 1922, was based in Bristol and trained as an architectural draughtsman then became a prolific book and newspaper ill ustrator. Asia on show Swindon Libraries has just revamped its Asian film collection with some exciting new titles, full of drama, music and fun. The films are housed at Central Library but titles can be reserved with cost and collected from any Swindon library. Librarian Joanne Richardson said the new films had been ordered after a survey of users. "Many of the people who sent us their comments are West and North Swindon residents and I would particularly like to thank them for their views and helping us improve the collection." Back on the astro turf Swindon Hockey Club's Saturday morning training for juniors has restarted and children are invited to try the game at the Greendown School all weather surface in Grange Park. Despite negative publicity about Swindon Council's wheelie bin experiment in West Swindon - where recyclable materials are collected weekly and waste for landfill is collected every other week the majority of people living in the area have enthusiastically embraced the scheme and are recycling more than ever before. Since 6 June when the experiment started the recycling rate has shot up from 20 per cent to 27 per cent and waste collection managers at the council hope this will soon achieve the 30 per cent target. If this is not met next year, the government will hammer the council and its taxpayers with fines for sending too much waste that could be recycled to landfill sites. Recycling officer Andrew Cook said, "the dry materials collected for recycling make up 32 per cent of total household waste. So reaching 27 per cent in two months of curbside collections is a remarkable performance by West Swindon residents." Recycling - no problem Claire and Colin Winslow from Corfe Road, Toothill cannot see why there have been complaints about the introduction of wheelie bins. With two daughters of 13 and 10 years, and two dogs, they produce a pretty average amount of waste, but don't have a problem with the two weekly bin collection. Claire, the Oliver Tomkins Junior School cook, said, "one recycling box was not big enough so I went to the council and bought two more. And when we go to the West Swindon Centre it's one of the chores for the girls to take plastic to the bank. "We're a typical family, so I really cannot see why people have been having problems with the new system."
