Art lovers can go behind the scenes at Swindon Open Studios

Every year at this time, the doors of artists' studios across Swindon and the surrounding area open to reveal a broad range of fascinating delights.

Behind each of those doors is a creative world waiting to be discovered, and no two of those worlds are ever the same.

A spokesperson said: "Swindon Open Studios is much more than an art exhibition.

It's a chance to meet the artists themselves, hear the stories behind their work and experience creativity in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

"You might find yourself watching a pot take shape on the wheel, chatting to a painter about their latest collection,

discovering beautiful jewellery or wandering through a venue filled with work from several local artists."

This enormous range of disciplines reflects the artistic and creative diversity not just of the annual event but also the diversity of the talents among the artists taking part.

Some of those artists work in what might be thought of as traditional painters' and sculptors' studios, while others produce their arrays of work in other settings.

The spokesperson said: "Not every artist works from a traditional studio, so alongside home studios you'll also find exhibitions in galleries, community venues and shared creative spaces.

"Every venue offers a different experience, making each visit part of the adventure.

News from SBC Volunteers help to smarten up the town centre Volunteers from across Swindon came together near the end of August to support Swindon Borough Council's Big Town Centre Clean-Up, helping to make a visible difference to the heart of the town.

The initiative saw council teams concentrate resources in the town centre, delivering a programme of improvements to enhance the public realm. Work included power washing public spaces, removing graffiti, cleaning and replacing litter bins, repairing paving and clearing weeds.

The impact of the campaign was strengthened by the fantastic efforts of local volunteers, who gave their time to litter pick, restore benches, and refresh flower beds and planters, helping to create a cleaner and more welcoming environment for residents, businesses and visitors.

To support the long-term upkeep of the town centre, the council

has also increased the fixed penalty notice for fly-tipping from £400 to £1,000, reinforcing its commitment to tackling environmental crime and keeping public spaces clean.

In addition, CCTV has recently been upgraded in Brunel North, Fleming Way and Spring Gardens car parks. New cameras have been installed on every floor and are equipped with speaker systems that enable staff in the council's monitoring centre to communicate directly with individuals on site, helping to deter and disrupt anti-social behaviour. Similar upgrades are also set to be completed in Brunel West car park this month.

Road resurfacing expanded in Swindon as programme continues Additional roads have been added to Swindon Borough Council’s programme of resurfacing work currently taking place across the town.

More than 20 locations, including Station Road and Marlowe Avenue will receive improvements before the end of September.

The additional roads, Bath Road, Croft Road, Draycott & The Ridgeway and Station Road, have been selected as a priority for work due to their importance to Swindon’s road network, having been identified as high traffic areas

in need of repair.

This programme forms part of the council’s annual roads resurfacing programme, which will see the local authority invest more than £2m into its road network this financial year.

Access will be maintained for residents and businesses where possible and signed diversions will be in place for other road users.

Cllr Nick Gardiner, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “I’m pleased to see that further roads have

been added to our current resurfacing programme, with some being a high priority for us to repair for a considerable time.

“This takes the total number of roads receiving improvements this summer to 22 and is an important step to getting on top of our repair backlog despite our limited resources.

“Alongside this proactive work, the team are still undertaking a variety of reactive work including filling potholes and repairing street furniture where necessary.

“I’d like to again extend my gratitude to the teams and our contractors for the hard work, especially during the hot summer weather.”

Swindon Borough Council is working with Read Easy to bring its free adult reading programme to Swindon Libraries, helping more residents gain the confidence and skills that come with being able to read.

Around 2.4m adults in England struggle to read or cannot read at all, which can affect everyday life, employment and independence. Through confidential one-to-one coaching, Read Easy supports adults to improve their reading skills in a

relaxed and supportive environment.

Ahead of the programme launching, Read Easy is looking for volunteer Literacy Specialists to support its team of volunteer reading coaches.

People with experience of teaching reading or literacy, or supporting learners, are being invited to volunteer for a few hours a week by e-mailing nwwrecruiter@readeasy.org.uk to find out more.

Haines Watts gives Swindon the thumbs-up for culture and entertainment “When we heard it was Swindon Film’s 80th anniversary coming up, we were very interested in getting involved.

It’s not just one of the oldest Film Societies in the country, but it also reminds people of all the great stuff that goes on in Swindon!” says Emma Skinner, a director at accountancy firm Haines Watts.

Emma, who is also the treasurer of Old Town Business Association, is passionate about supporting good causes and not-for-profits (in 2024 she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, raising funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance). She also wants more people to know that Swindon is actually quite a gem.

The cultural offer in the town – including top acts from the national comedy circuit, live music in so many pubs, two theatres and the beautiful parks such as Town Gardens, Queens Park and Lydiard Park – means we’re actually spoiled for choice when it comes to serious culture or just having a great day out.

“Whilst we are part of a national network, our focus remains on our local community.

Supporting and promoting local organisations and initiatives means a lot to us,” says Emma.

“And though we take our work very seriously, we take quality of life seriously too. So we believe it’s important to be active in the Old Town Business Association, and to support something like Swindon Film’s 80th anniversary, which really puts the town on the map.”

Experienced in managing complex assignments, Emma, an audit RI, primarily focuses on corporate engagements - from advisory through to compliance.

But if asked about what she likes most about her job, her answer is simple: “I enjoy the challenge and variety, but I’m especially lucky to work with so many great people, both clients and my team, which helps keep things interesting.”

Swimmers go to great lengths with waves of support for Phoenix Enterprises

Earlier this year we selected Phoenix Enterprises as the main beneficiary of our annual Swimathon and this month we invited their CEO, Clare McDougall, to our meeting to give us a talk and to receive a cheque for £4,500, Phoenix’s share of the £9,000 proceeds.

Phoenix Enterprises was founded in 2002 and supports

more than 120 vulnerable adults in Swindon each year.

That’s people with Autism, Asperger’s, Down’s Syndrome, depression, anxiety and other special needs.

Clare spoke warmly of her dedicated staff team, trustees, ambassadors and volunteers.

They provide a structured, supportive working environment where individuals gain confidence and employability skills through packaging and hand-assembly work for local businesses. Around 30% of Phoenix’s running costs are met through this commercial income, with the remainder raised through grants and fundraising.

Our Swimathon back in May in Highworth Recreation Centre attracted nearly 100 entrants and raised over £9,000, making it one of our most successful events. On the day

we were honoured to welcome the Mayor of Swindon, cllr Fay Howard, who presented every participant with a medal and certificate.

Also, several members of the Phoenix team were there, some swimming, others counting lengths and assisting with presentations.

We are deeply grateful to all the swimmers, supporters and volunteers who helped make our Swimathon 2026 such a success.

NHS urges people to book Winter jabs now The NHS national booking service has opened for prebooking flu and Covid-19 vaccinations ahead of Winter.

Residents in the South West who are eligible for the jabs are encouraged to tick one thing off their to do list by scheduling their seasonal vaccination appointment.

From 1 September, flu vaccinations will be available for: - pregnant women - all children aged two or three years old on 31 August 2026 - all primary school and secondary school-aged children - all children in clinical risk groups aged from six months to less than 18 years From 1 October, the flu vaccine will be available for: - those aged 65 and over - those aged 18 to 65 years old in a clinical risk group - those in long-stay residential care homes - carers in receipt of carer's allowance, or those who are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person - people experiencing homelessness - frontline healthcare workers Covid vaccinations will be available from 1 October for: - those aged 75 years plus - residents in care homes for older adults - individuals aged six months and over who are immunosuppressed Dr Matthew Dominey, Consultant in Public Health and Screening and Immunisation Lead at NHS England South West, said: “Flu and Covid-19 can be serious, particularly for older people, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems or long-term health conditions, so it is important that everyone who is eligible comes forward as soon as they can.

Swindon Shuffle celebrates 20th anniversary with a bang This year Swindon Shuffle will be celebrating its 20th annual festival and it's definitely going to be doing that with style.

The free entry event takes place over seven days in more than six venues across Old Town and this year you can get shuffling from Monday 7 September to Sunday 13 September.

This year the main charity that the festival will be raising money for is Prospect Hospice and its headline sponsor is UKRI. The venues include The Beehive, The Castle, The Hop, The Pulpit, The Royal Oak and The Victoria and all will be free entry.

There will be more than 50 acts taking to the stage throughout the festival including some of the most talented musicians around such as Modern Evils, Concrete Prairie, Subject A, JB & The Mojo Makers, Better Heaven, Airflo Viduals and the always excellent Buswell.

As if that wasn't enough, as part of the festival's 20th celebrations they will be taking over a stage at the Old Town Street Food Festival on Sunday

Council Community Hubs continue to expand Swindon Borough Council is continuing to make it easier for residents to access advice, support and council services through its growing network of Community Hubs.

The recently opened Community Hub at Swindon Central Library joins the existing hubs at Park Library and The Meadows in Penhill, bringing a range of services together in welcoming, accessible locations across the borough.

At Swindon Central Library, residents can access library services alongside Customer Services, Adult Community Learning, Employment and Skills, and the new Youth Hub, making it

A-Level and T-Level success for Swindon students Students across Swindon are taking the next step towards their futures as A-Level and T-Level results reveal another year of excellent achievement across the borough.

A total of 1,128 students completed A-Levels in Swindon this summer, alongside 454 students who achieved qualifications through T-Levels.

The borough recorded an overall pass rate of 95.4 per cent (grades A* to E), an increase of 0.3 per cent on last year, while 37.8 per cent (up 0.6 per cent on last year) of entries were awarded top grades of A* to B. The figures also include results achieved by local students attending Cirencester College.

Cllr Kate Tomlinson, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Education, said: “I’m delighted to congratulate every student receiving their A-Level and T-Level results. Their success reflects years of hard work,

commitment and perseverance “These achievements demonstrate the high aspirations of young people across Swindon and the excellent support provided by families, teachers and school communities."

Schools across the borough are celebrating strong outcomes, including at Lydiard Park Academy Sixth Form, where students achieved a 100 per cent pass rate across all academic and vocational qualifications.

The academy also reported that 76 per cent of grades were awarded at A* to C, while 63 per cent of vocational grades achieved Distinction or Distinction*.

Students are now progressing to a range of destinations including Cardiff University, the University of Bristol, the University of Reading and the University of Gloucestershire, as well as apprenticeships and employment.

A-Level celebrations at Ridgeway School & Sixth Form Sixth formers from The Ridgeway School & Sixth Form in Wroughton - part of The White Horse Federation - celebrated their A Level and Vocational qualifications results.

Some individual successes include: - Farrleigh who secured 4 A*s and has earned a place at the University of Cambridge to study Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.

- Adam received 4 A*s and leaves us to pursue

his place at the University of Oxford to study Mathematics.

- Jacob achieved an A* and 2 As and will study English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford.

- Frances achieved an A* and two As and will study Chemistry at the University of Bath.

- Evan achieved an A* and two As and will study Economics at the University of Bristol.

Bright futures ahead as UTC Swindon students celebrate success Year 13 students at UTC Swindon celebrated after receiving their A Level and vocational qualification results.

The results day was filled with celebration as students secured places on university courses, apprenticeship programmes and other post-18 pathways.

UTC Swindon is a STEM school and sixth form that specialises in engineering, digital and cyber security, and this year’s exam outcomes reflect the hard work, technical talent and ambition of its students.

LINK POLITICS Important to clearly set out what can be delivered A column by Swindon Borough Council Leader Cllr Gary Sumner As the Big Town Centre Clean-Up progresses, it is encouraging to see renewed attention being given to the appearance of Swindon town centre.

Cleaner streets, graffiti removal, repairs, stronger enforcement action and a focus on the day-to-day issues that frustrate residents are all welcome.

Improving confidence in the town centre starts with getting the basics right, and that is exactly where the new administration has chosen to begin.

Of course, residents rightly expect us to think beyond cleaning and maintenance.

Swindon needs a thriving town centre, successful regeneration projects and a

clear vision for the future.

However, we must also be honest about the financial reality facing the council.

The administration inherited a very challenging financial position, and every significant investment must now be carefully assessed to ensure it delivers value for taxpayers and is genuinely affordable.

That is why our focus is on practical progress rather than grand promises.

Ambition remains important, whether that is through Kimmerfields, the proposed entertainment venue, support for inward investment or wider regeneration opportunities.

But aspirations must be grounded in financial reality.

Residents deserve honesty about what can be delivered and when, rather than commitments that cannot ultimately be fulfilled.

Reasons to be Cheerful – Swindon Town Centre A column by borough council Labour Group Deputy Leader Cllr Emma Bushell There has been a lot of media interest in recent weeks in the dying of high streets up and down the UK, thanks largely to the spotlight shone on the issue by the Prime Minister.

Swindon has these exact same problems. Like high streets across the country, businesses have had to contend with the growth of online shopping, the rise in business rates and soaring energy bills, which have contributed to the perception of there being a decline in our town centres.

Those challenges will not disappear overnight, but in recent times we in Swindon have started to see signs of what can be achieved when there is a willingness to invest and intervene and look to the future of what we want Swindon to become.

Andy Burnham’s policy of new

powers to help communities take back control of their high streets can act as the catalyst for taking back control. Under the Labour Government’s plans, new vape shops and adult gaming centres will require planning permission, while councils will be given greater powers over new betting shops.

These new powers could make a real difference in Swindon, helping the council encourage a healthier mix of shops and ensuring that the future of our town centre is shaped by what local people actually want, which was the purpose of the previous Labour Council’s Heart of Swindon vision.

August’s Big Town Centre Clean-Up is another welcome

scheme to help turn Swindon into a town to be proud of.

Council teams, supported by residents and councillors, have been cleaning streets, removing graffiti and weeds, repairing paving and refurbishing benches, to make Swindon an attractive place to visit. This is a positive initiative from the council, which Labour councillors have been keen to support because, regardless of who runs the council, we all want the same outcome – a better Swindon.

One of the most exciting opportunities in Swindon is the proposed new entertainment venue at Kimmerfields, which the Labour-led council at the time secured £20 million of Government funding for. In the interests of all of us working towards building a better Swindon, we very much hope the Conservative Administration will take that work forward and turn the opportunity into a major attraction.

Members voted to explore changes to the borough's street-naming policy to give greater recognition to Swindon's war dead, accelerate efforts to secure Armed Forces Silver Accreditation and review the changes made to Commercial Road while maintaining the principle of limited free parking.

Swindon has enormous potential, and there are many reasons to be optimistic about the future. However, lasting improvement will come from restoring confidence, managing public finances responsibly and focusing on the things that matter most to residents.

Getting the basics right is not the end of the journey, but it is an essential first step.

This cannot stop at the boundaries of the town centre, however. The Government's £40m Pride in Place investment in Swindon has already kickstarted improvements and new community activities in the Penhill and Walcot and Parks areas.

Rather than decisions simply being handed down from above, the new Neighbourhood Boards will give residents a direct role in shaping how that investment is used.

Both boards have now met for the first time, beginning the work of turning that funding into visible improvements.

There is always more that can be done and nobody should pretend otherwise. But we should also recognise progress when it happens. Labour will support the new Administration when it builds on that progress and challenge it when it does not, because our ambition should be bigger than simply managing decline.

POETRY Maurice Spillane: Of Poetry Swindon

I was in the Albert Hall recently for a wonderful reading of letters. As we left, we bemoaned letters we’d never saved.

When I was 12 in 1961, I spent three months in the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht.

Letters from my mother and my grandfather and special letters in Irish to a headmaster.

All precious - but they disappeared.

My other regret is the loss of an eight-page letter from my eldest daughter when she was an Erasmus student in Italy.

Luckily, I published a poem

about it. Here’s an extract: Your letter was like the first draft of a poem, running with flushes, tripping around buttresses, bouncing with subplot and mixed tenses; glass-splashed like rushed varnish on a window-frame.

You were in a hurry.

Swindon had their excuses but failed to do their homework.

They were caught out early in the term, meaning that they now have time to rectify their errors.

Injuries are part and parcel of football, but not the volume which Town suffered before a ball was even kicked.

Swindon can initially place the blame at that door, and even their harshest of critics won’t disagree.

But I won’t agree with it being a reason to accept lower standards. The Robins' injury crisis exposed adequate preparation.
