Running for my life

I thought I'd use this space for something a bit more personal this month.

As I'm writing this I'm still recovering from the hardest physical thing I've ever done and something that I don't think I'll ever do again.

But I'm pleased to say I completed my first ever 26.2 mile slog on Sunday 15 October when I took part in the Birmingham Marathon.

It was definitely absolutely exhausting but I managed to drag myself over the finish line.

I was running in aid of ICP Support, a charity that is very close to my heart as it helps research and support women who suffer from intrahepatic cholestasis during pregnancy.

ICP as it's called causes the liver not to function properly in pregnancy leading to premature births and even stillbirth. Without this charity I don't know if my three children would be alive today.

Swindon funds search for life on Mars

The UK Space Agency, based in Swindon, has awarded more than £3 million to UK academics and scientists to support the exploration of life on Mars and examine the polar regions of the Moon.

A further £230,000 of funding has been awarded to studies into experiments designed to be carried out on board the International Space Station (ISS), which could potentially support future human exploration of space.

The £3 million from the UK Space Agency Aurora Science programme, which is exploiting the data from robotic exploration, including our major investment in ESA’s ExoMars mission, will target questions of past and present life on Mars, investigating the presence of water and the geochemical environment as well as atmospheric trace gases and their sources.

Science Minister, Jo Johnson, said: “Science enables and shapes the UK’s future in space exploration.

This government funding will play a vital role in ensuring UK academics can continue to study the secrets of our solar system, from the polar regions of the Moon to the potential of life on Mars.

“Research and innovation are at the core of our Industrial Strategy, and by investing in these

types of projects, we are reinforcing our position as a world leader in these important and exciting areas.”

The funding has been allocated to 17 academics and individual scientists working at UK research organisations. The scientific objectives of the first mission in the Aurora programme, ExoMars, are to understand Mars’s environment and its atmosphere.

In addition, £230,000 will fund four studies to design ISS-based experiments as part of a national science programme.

British ESA astronaut Tim Peake was involved in many experiments during his sixth-month mission on the ISS from December 2015 to June 2016, including several with contributions from UK scientists.

Libby Jackson, Human Spaceflight and Microgravity Programme Manager at the UK Space Agency, said: “Microgravity science in the UK has grown rapidly since we joined the ISS programme back in 2012.

Any future mission to the ISS represents a really exciting opportunity to build on this and to ensure that the UK science community is properly placed to capitalise on the research opportunities that such a flight would offer.”

The studies undertaken will address how high quality science can be implemented within the constraints of the ISS and provide an accurate cost for the full flight experiment.

New £10m health centre opens doors to patients

Swindon’s new NHS Health Centre has been officially opened by Swindon Mayor, Cllr Maureen Penny.

The £10m facility first opened its doors to patients in June 2017 and includes a pharmacy, two GP practices (the Whalebridge Practice and Carfax NHS Medical Centre), the walk-in centre, dental and podiatry, and other NHS services.

It was delivered by NHS Property Services on behalf of NHS England, NHS Swindon CCG, Public Health Swindon and Swindon Borough Council.

Cllr Penny unveiled a commemorative plaque and officially declared the new Health Centre open at a ceremony attended by project partners.

The centre replaces the Carfax Medical Centre and serves a local population of 22,000 registered and 36,000 unregistered patients.

Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “The new Health Centre is a key part of the first phase of the Kimmerfields regeneration scheme and it is fantastic to see it up and running.

"We will now move ahead with the demolition of the old building in Carfax Street which will unlock a key parcel of land as we look to progress with the

next phases.”

Paul Vater, Chief Operating Officer for NHS Swindon CCG said: “We are delighted to have this excellent facility in the heart of our town centre, providing high quality services to the local community which patients and staff are already very much enjoying.

Could the 1968 vision for 'Super Swindon' come true?

With the inexorable expansion of Swindon in all directions, Roger Ogle speculates on the future.

Over the last few years permission has been given to build at Tadpole Farm in the north, Bagbury Park next to Coate Water and in and around Wroughton. The development of Wichelstowe is still far from complete, and building has yet to start on the 10,000 houses proposed for East Swindon.

More recently, the 1968 'Silver Book' study of town expansion envisaged Swindon absorbing Purton, growing a town of 100,000 to a city of 400,000 by year 2000. This target was scaled back by central government to around 4

250,000 people but we’re still well short of that number.

Currently there are around 220,000 people living within the boundaries of Swindon Borough. The 11,000 homes in West Swindon as we know it now is on the edge of the urban envelope. In 2009 a joint report by Wiltshire and Swindon planners considered a range of sites beyond the town's western boundary illustrated right. Pry Farm (10) was identified as the preferred place for future large scale house building. This could provide space for 3,000 houses, though access could see a road built across the edge of Mouldon Hill Park to join with Thamesdown Drive.

While the agreed current Local Plans for Wiltshire and Swindon outlines long term

development until 2016, house building companies have been able to gain permissions on sites not in the plan by appealing against rejections by both Wiltshire and Swindon's planning committee.

Two such are the 150 homes at Mouldon View (9) off Purton Road, now completed, whilst the 700 houses at Ridgeway

Farm (8) are well underway. A new application for 81 houses off Purton Road, opposite Moulden View, has been submitted to Wiltshire.

The next Local Plan is not due until 2026, but the pressure from central government for new houses may encourage house builders to try and secure permission well before then. There are rumours that Hook Street South (1), could soon be subject to a planning application for up to 2,000 houses. If Pry Farm was to be permitted in the next eight years, it's a short step to the 2026 Local Plan identifying even more green fields close to Cricklade and Purton as ripe for development. The vision for Swindon outlined in 1968 could be achieved in the next twenty years.

Olive Tree cafe staff spread a smile

Staff from the Olive Tree cafe spent the day at Halifax Building Society to talk to visitors about mental health and wellbeing.

The event, at the Bridge Street branch in the town centre, was arranged to mark World Mental Health Day. The cafe’s general manager Phillida Richards, said: “It’s important to realise that everyone has a mental health and needs to look after it.

This year the theme of World Mental Health Day is being in the workplace – we are here to reach out to people in the community. It’s interesting to note that people seem a lot more willing to talk about

mental health than they ever have been. It’s really encouraging.”

Halifax invited the team at the Olive Tree to speak to customers and hand out cupcakes with positive messages on them, having adopted Mental Health UK as their charity this year. The Olive Tree Cafe, a registered

Local vet urges early detection of heart disease in pets

Local veterinary practice, Drove Veterinary Hospital based in Swindon is helping pet owners to recognise signs of heart problems in their cats and dogs, and urging them to seek prompt attention.

Heart disease affects around 10% of cats and dogs in the UK. Early detection is a major factor in helping to manage the condition and increase life expectancy.

Heart problems sadly affect pets as well as people.

However, heart disease in pets tends to result from problems with the heart valves and muscles, rather than coronary artery disease.

Some of our most popular breeds are prone to heart disease, with the trend towards ownership of smaller dogs highlighting the problem.

Amongst the most at risk are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, 90% of which will have heart disease by 10 years of age.

Pugs, Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers also carry a higher risk.

“Coughing, or a change in your pet’s ability to exercise, can indicate the heart is struggling. Breathing can become laboured, or fast and shallow, and your pet might appear tired or less interested in playing or interacting with you.

Baha'i anniversary

The Baha’is of Swindon have marked the bicentenary of the birth of Baha’u’llah, founder of the faith.

The celebration took place on Saturday night, on October 21, at Christchurch Community Centre.

Members of the Baha’i community gathered with friends, neighbours and colleagues to celebrate the birth of this global figure.

Adult Community Learning Courses by Whitehead Ross

Whitehead Ross was formally established in 2012, and has been active in Swindon since September this year with Swindon Borough Council.

The Educational programme assists adults with improving their learning skills. This scheme aims to improve their employability. Since their foundation Whitehead has helped 79 individuals into work.

Whitehead's Swindon branch offers three taster sessions which will enable local residents to explore career paths and opportunities across various sectors including Health and Social care, Hospitality with food safety, Business Administration and Retail and Customer Service.

Also on offer are digital short courses which engage

with modern learning methods involving technology including iPads for Beginners, Microsoft Office and Exploring the Internet.

Also available are skills for life which includes Math, English and ICT support.

Courses are fully funded for those who meet the eligibility criteria thanks to funding from the European Social Fund and Education & Skills Funding Agency. Funded childcare can be provided to assist parents to attend.

Matt, who sits on the West Swindon parish council and represents the Conservative party, was invited back to the

school he left in 2006 to give a talk to the youngsters about the importance of political engagement as they voted for their own school councillors and eco councillors.

Thamesdown unveils luxury buses

Thamesdown has unveiled 13 new buses for Swindon residents and visitors.

Swindon Robins are champions

Swindon Robins put on an incredible display at Speedway Grand Final, 4 October, making them the champions of the Speedway Great Britain (SGB) Premiership.

The final saw the Robins championing over Wolverhampton W47-42, their first win since 2012.

Highlights came from Nick Morris and Jason Doyle harbouring unmatchable speeds on their final laps, who, after a shaky start from Swindon, secured the squad’s victory.

After their win Robins boss, Alun Rossiter, said: “It’s unbelievable. Make no bones about it, everybody wrote us off both at the start of the year, and also tonight when they said we had no chance at Wolves.

“But what a team of riders we’ve had this year. They’ve had that something about them, and that’s why they’re champions.

“It starts from Jason as

captain, but also with Nick who has been absolutely outstanding this year. I had people telling me they didn’t want Nick in the team, but we stood our ground and he’s ridden superbly this year.

“Adam is riding with a broken scaphoid, but what a start he gave us in Heat 1, and he was unfortunate with the crash in his last ride which could have made things a bit easier.

“In Heat 15 I would have been expecting Rory to have been climbing all over Jason and Nick, but he wasn’t and it

took the pressure off a bit – it was just a case of hoping for no engine failures, there was all sorts going through my head!

“I’m so proud of all of them, including Zach (Wajtknecht) who was here again tonight. He was beating heat-leaders before he had that injury in what looked a simple slip-off.

“It’s an emotional night, but I’m doing well, I’m holding it in!

I do have to say a big thankyou to my family, and my wife Julie has been immense. It’s an amazing night for everyone at the club.”

Rowing for charity The Wiltshire Treehouse charity has received an £880 donation from The Midcounties Co-operative after colleagues brought the gym in-store for a bike and row-athon.

A 25-strong team of supermarket workers from the Old Town, Crossways and Beachcroft Midcounties Co-operative Food stores, cycled and rowed for 12 hours in tag-team style challenge, clocking up a combined total of 237 miles at the Old Town store.

The money raised from the event will help the charity to continue to provide bereavement support to young people up to the age of 25.

Diabetes advice There were 160 diabetesrelated amputations in three years in Swindon, according to newly released figures.

Data for 2013-2016 shows an increase of 44 on the 116 procedures carried out in Swindon between 2010 and 2013. Diabetes UK has produced a new video showing people with diabetes how to check their feet at home, and urging them to do it daily, to identify problems early.

Dance sessions are the best medicine Staff on the Trauma Unit at the Great Western Hospital are holding weekly Movement to Music sessions to get patients on their feet for half an hour of exercise to old radio hits.

Physiotherapists created the treatment session in June 2017, inspired by the success of the ward’s weekly tea parties, to get patients to socialise and enjoy their physiotherapy during their stay.

Another outstanding result for Uplands School

Uplands School is celebrating after being graded as ‘outstanding’ for the second successive time by Ofsted.

The report highlights numerous strengths of the school, including the teachers’ determination to provide the best education and care for their pupils to allow them to flourish and make excellent progress.

Uplands School is for students aged 11-19 years with severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties, and/or Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), meaning they often have additional complex needs.

The report says that the school has acted upon the only recommendation made at the previous inspection in July 2014 which was to build stronger links with businesses in the community.

The school showed evidence of this during this year’s inspection when pupils showed off their

knowledge of money by helping out at one of the Uplands charity shops.

Fiona Clark, acting headteacher at Uplands School, said: “We are absolutely delighted and it is a testimony to the fabulous young people, their families and our amazing staff that we have retained our ‘Outstanding’ judgement.

“It’s a huge team effort and

we are immensely proud of the part that everyone plays in this success. Our young people are inspirational and it is a privilege to work with them and help them prepare for adulthood.”

Parents were said to be overwhelmingly positive and appreciative of the school’s provision of quality education and care.

The school’s consideration of safeguarding was also praised by inspectors, stating that the school has a strongly embedded culture of safety and security with staff receiving regular training on keeping pupils safe. The report recommends that the next steps for the school should be to ensure that the most able pupils fulfil their academic potential.

Family had lucky escape after poison gas leak

A family of six say they are lucky to be alive after a gas leak at their home.

When ambulance crews arrived at their Toothill home they were told it was food poisoning and advised to sleep it off. And despite having informed Southern Housing Association, they had to wait for more than two weeks for the dangerous boiler to be replaced – living in a home without heating or hot water.

Lorry driver Moses Semakula explained that he had moved to his housing association home in Toothill about five weeks ago with his wife Tracy and his girls; Jemima, 3, and Jabirah, 7 and boys; Jebran, 11, and Jebril, 13.

He said: “It was a normal Sunday evening and we had just come back from church.

Tracy, who was cooking tea, started to complain that she wasn’t feeling too good, she was saying that she was suffering from a headache. I just thought that she had been working too hard, she’s a taxi driver working for Uber. I said that she should go and have a lie down and get some rest but it did not get better.

“She went upstairs to put the children to bed but said that her legs were feeling weak and that she was finding difficult to walk.”

Shortly afterwards Moses said that Tracy collapsed while she was attempting to walk from the bedroom to the bathroom.

“I was really worried and confused – I didn’t know what was happening. And then my eldest daughter Jabirah came out of her bedroom saying that she didn’t feel well either.

Tracy’s speech had gone by that point – she was just lying there unable to speak or move, she was just breathing.”

Moses called 999 and an ambulance crew turned up at their home less than 10 minutes later, but in that time everyone

else in the family started to become ill, with the children being physically sick.

And Moses said he also began suffering from the effects of the gas.

“I felt very weak and everything was blurry. I thought I should open up the front door because I wasn’t sure that I would be able to answer it when they arrived – it was really frightening. I slowly started to feel better when I was out in the fresh air.”

When paramedics arrived at their home, they found it difficult to diagnose the nature of the problem – deciding

that the cause of the illness affecting the whole family was food poisoning and supplying Moses with rubber gloves and cardboard boxes to be sick in. Moses, suspecting it might be a problem with the boiler, opened all the windows in their home while they slept off the effects. In the morning, the whole family attended Great Western Hospital’s emergency department where medics said that they could have suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning and told the family to immediately inform their housing association.

The faulty boiler has since

been repaired.

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: “Paramedics operate with the information and symptoms they are presented with, in regards to this incident the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are very similar to those for flu and food poisoning including persistent headaches, sickness and tiredness and a definitive diagnosis is very difficult.

“Another crew revisited the family the next day after a call came in the following morning but they declined any further treatment.”

After being contacted by the Link Magazine, Rachel Bancroft, Head of Contracts and Compliance released the following statement: “Southern Housing Group takes the safety of our customers very seriously and we’re committed to carrying out regular gas safety checks at all our properties. We understand that the National Grid were notified of a possible leak at Cowdrey Close. The National Grid engineers found that a one-off gas escape may have happened. By the National Grid’s safety standards the situation at Cowdrey Close was deemed ‘Not immediately dangerous’ and accordingly the engineer did not report this as

an incident to the Health and Safety Executive. The engineer capped the gas at the meter to prevent further escape of gas.

“We understand that our customer reported to our gas contractor, TSG, that she had visited hospital in relation to the one-off gas escape that may have happened. Southern Housing Group has procedures which are followed in the event of any incidence of carbon monoxide poisoning to one of our customers. However, the situation at Cowdrey Close was deemed ‘Not immediately dangerous’ by the National Grid engineer.

“Following a phone call from our customer, our contractors, TSG, visited the property on 20

Eyesore office block set for a new lease of life

Swindon Borough Council is in talks to breathe new life into a six-storey eyesore that has stood empty and neglected for 12 years.

Falcon House, a former office block, that sits on top of the Debenhams store in Fleming Way has deteriorated since being left vacant.

In partnership with the building’s owners, Standard Life Investments, plans are being discussed to replace the interiors and exteriors – leaving the original concrete framework – to create a 90flat apartment block.

Under the proposals, Standard Life will fund 50 per cent of the development cost in return for the council entering into a 47-year lease – with 18

net rental income being shared equally.

According to the developers, New Falcon House will command a dominant position above the Parade Shopping Centre and Swindon Town Centre and will become a distinctive landmark on Swindon’s townscape.

The residential accommodation extends to approx 45,000 sq ft (4,180 sq m) arranged over six floors of approx 7,500 sq ft (697 sq m) each together with the potential to provide parking for over 150 cars.

New Falcon House will be stripped back to its frame and comprehensively refurbished to provide 90 apartments inside a new façade.

Academy tops out as building hits milestone

A ceremony to celebrate the ‘topping out’ of Swindon’s new £21m Great Western Academy school took place today – highlighting the progress of the new school which is due to open on September 3.

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson joined representatives from New College and Swindon Borough Council at the event to officially mark the reaching of the highest point of the threestorey building.

The new school, designed by award winning architects Scott Brownrigg, will provide new facilities for a full secondary and post-16 curriculum in North East Swindon with a major focus on business, enterprise and technology. Graham Davis, the first Principal of the Academy, said: “We are excited to see the progress that is being made to the Academy and have been encouraged by the positive

engagement with the families of prospective students at our open events.

"We look forward to welcoming our new students next September and to seeing Great Western Academy become a centre of excellence and a key asset to the local community.”

The building work is due to be completed in July 2018,

Design & Build Workshops The National Self Build and Renovation Centre (NSBRC) hosts the UK's only permanent exhibition for self builds.

On 25 November, from 10am to 5.30pm, the centre will be hosting a free design and build workshop aimed at companies and homeowners looking to construct a property from the ground up.

The aim of these workshops is to offer professional advice, accurate cost summaries and an array of design ideas to suit individual tastes.

Secondary Director appointed at The White Horse Federation

The White Horse Federation (TWHF) has appointed Helen Glass as Secondary Director.

Helen joins with 11 years’ experience in leading secondary schools.

From 2006 until 2010, she was the Headteacher at Gloucester’s Central Technology College. In her first 15 months at the school she took it from ‘Notice to Improve’ to being rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted.

Helen will be working with all secondary TWHF Principals to

continue increasing the success of each school and providing students with a first class education.

New images of proposed gallery unveiled as lottery application deadline approaches

The latest architect’s images have been released to show how the proposed new museum and art gallery could look.

And now the Trust and its team are in the final stages of consultation and engagement before they complete their application for stage one of Heritage Lottery funding for the new building in the town centre.

Trust director Rod Hebden said the plans have evolved thoroughout the summer as a result of feedback he has received.

One of the most striking adjustments is

that the position of the building, originally planned for the site of the old multistorey carpark next to the Wyvern, may now change to the opposite side of the carpark, bordering Princes Street.

“People began asking us why we weren’t showing the building off more to traffic and pedestrians passing through on Princes Street. This landmark building needs to be as prominent as possible, showing off the emerging cultural quarter and bringing people and much more investment into our town centre.”

The Trust have also been liaising with

teachers and lecturers about what schools and colleges might need to have configured in the new building to get the most out of the facilities, and have asked employers for their input too.

Meetings with neighbours to the site and a stakeholder workshop are also taking place in the coming weeks, and the competitive bid for Stage One funding will go in to the Heritage Lottery Fund in late November 2017. Wiltshire-based Dyson plugs into electric car market Wiltshire-based inventor and entrepreneur Sir James Dyson has unveiled plans for an electric car that will be on sale from 2020. Sir James has revealed that 400 engineers have been working on the £2.5bn project at his Malmesbury headquarters since 2015.

Although no prototype has been built, the car’s electric motor was ready with two different highly efficient battery types under development.

Dyson announced that it

would be investing £1bn into battery technology last year – one of the key areas considered vital for the future development of electric vehicles.

The £2.5bn total is made up from a further £1bn in designing the prototype and another £500m in associated costs.

Research and development will take place at Hullavington, close to Dyson’s HQ, although it is thought that the product will be manufactured overseas.

Swindon welcomes newest kids on the blocks

For the last 15 years, in partnership with The Brickish Association, Steam Museum has been hosting incredible displays for Lego fanatics.

Last month's Great Western Brick Show was no exception, exhibiting models both old and new.

Steam was packed out by the thousands admiring the impressive hand crafted models. The Brick Cafe and Lego shop also proved popular as ever, offering fantastic finds

unavailable on the highstreet.

Higlights saw the return of Lego robot wars as well as debuting models including the Palace of Westminster, glass structures, the Keko factory and the Scottish Highlands.

For film fans there was spectacular movie models from Aliens, War of the Worlds, Robo-Cop and Predator.

President of the association and co-organiser, Martin Long, said: “This event attracts visitors from all over the UK and our aim is always to inspire children and adult Lego fans to get building themselves."

hitting venues all across the UK including Edinburgh, Manchester, Cardiff and Nottingham. It’s basically an enormous pop-up bar of gin that rides into town offering gins from down the road, and nation-wide. So, it was wonderful to hear that the sellout show was also hitting the smaller towns like Swindon.

On arrival I was presented with a free goody bag which consisted of a free Gin Festival Copa Balloon Glass, a top-up credit card for drinks and a map to the gins or ‘The Gin Explorer Book’.

My friend and I were then escorted through Steam’s foyer and pointed in the direction towards the maze of wonder, and it was wonderful.

From Portugal to Italy, Spain to Belgium, it was made nearly impossible to not find something that quenched your spirted style. The Gin Explorer Book became less of a souvenir and

more of a survival guide as we wandered around the horse shoe of bars in a somewhat disorientated fashion. Luckily we caught the engaging eye of a representative from Tinker Gin, Bernadette, who hollered us over.

As our bubbly host explained, Tinker is a rather exclusive British gin having only launched last February. Since April only 1500 bottles are circulating the UK which on a gineric scale, and observing the other hundred gins around the room, is a relatively small operation.

Bernadette did confidently assert that it’s been a “strong and steady start”.

Tinker is definitely on my gin list for next summer – it tasted like a fruity botanical garden.

Sold.

It went without saying that this festival was a marathon not a sprint, so we needed fuel. Thankfully there was a marquee on site, inhabited

by The Striped Pig Company.

Initially the sizzling smells were enough to draw me in, but having seen the gin-soaked lineup of meats I joined the queue and ordered the gin and sausage wild boar bun.

On the sharing tables, as we semi-dined together, gin lover and Swindon resident Ian Matheson said: “Well my wife and I are big fans of gin, so that’s why we’re here. ”But yes the technology with the cards is very impressive, it’s so quick and easy to use at the bars.”

His wife, Rosa, added: “It is a good use for Steam, and the décor is also wonderful."

Needless to say there was an abundance of merry faces in the esteemed museum’s Western Hall carrying around goblets of exotic and classic gins, participating in gin master classes and snapping themselves with the festival’s photo booth.

Busy goings on in the cycle world

On Two Wheels

There have been some improvements to the cycle network in Swindon over the last few months.

We’ve now got two “Flyers” in town – the Western and the Southern Flyer. The Eastern Flyer is under construction with alterations being made to various paths.

These routes are a great way to get in to town on a bike on traffic free paths in the main.

Where they do touch roads, these are minor roads so they are perfect for the whole family to ride on.

The Southern Flyer stops at the old Brunel car park and the Western Flyer ends on Station Rd. One of the biggest issues that we at Swindon Cycle Campaign almost unanimously agree on is how to navigate in and around the town centre on a bike. There is no obvious

way to get across the centre as cycling is prohibited in the retail centre, leaving Commercial Rd, Manchester Rd, Corporation Street, Fleming Way, Farnsby Street and Princess Street as the main routes. These are one way, very busy and take high volumes of buses and other large vehicles. As we know, large vehicles and cyclists sometimes don’t mix well.

Good news: Swindon Cycle Campaign members are involved in the beginnings of a consultation to look at solutions to this problem.

We’ve all talked about this for a long time, we’ve got ideas from cyclists and others and we have had conversations with council officials about the problems.

Community bar to close

Toothill Community Centre’s bar will be forced to close - after trustees agreed to cease their relationship with the Toothill Community Centre Trading Ltd. Announcing the news, the charity said: “The Trustees of the Toothill Community Centre wish to announce that, with regret, due to our requirement to adhere to Charity Law we have ceased our relationship with the Trading Company who currently manage the Community Centre Bar.” Member for governance Jane Francis explained that the decision had not been undertaken lightly: “There were issues of profitability and it was with deep regret that we made this decision. We understand that there will be a lot of people who might not agree with this decision but we felt that we were left no choice in this case.

“We are committed to ensuring that the community centre serves the whole of the

community - there are roughly 4,500 people who use our facilities and we have to make sure that we are serving all of the people of Toothill.”

The community centre bar has been running since 2010 under the charity’s trading arm - Toothill Community Centre Trading Ltd. In their statement, the charity adds: “The community centre however remains fully open and very much open for business and we will be pushing forward with plans to have the centre refurbished next year and with our exciting plans for its future.”

Swindon’s war heroes to be recognised in book by Libraries team

Staff from Swindon Libraries' local study team set out to formally recognise more than 600 people from Swindon who lost their lives in WWII. Currently more than 1000 entries have been collated.

The list also includes more than 200 prisoners of war and 135 servicemen who were awarded gallantry medals or awards from all services and fields of combat. Of these, 20 men died during the war.

Katherine Cole, Local Studies officer, said: “I have spent the last two years creating the Roll of Honour.

“The project started after someone asked me if I knew how many men from Swindon had died in the Second World War. I couldn’t find a record anywhere so I thought it would be interesting to compile my own list. It has been truly fascinating."

Once the project is complete, the research and transcript will be published into a book.

Younite Foundation holds Sponsored Swim at David Lloyd

Younite Foundation will be holding a sponsored swim to raise funds to pay for clean drinking water for destitute street kids in Kenya this Christmas on December 2.

The sponsored swim is open to all who can raise money and can swim unaided, with slots available to book online for swimming between 12pm and 4pm at David Lloyd Health on Latham Road.

Kenya has had a drought for most of this year and the children there don’t want toys this Christmas, just clean drinking water which has become expensive.

Younite Foundation Trustee James Phipps said “We have raised thousands in the last year for local causes but we all take for granted to have clean drinking water or the ability to swim if we want to, so this Christmas we want to make sure that the street kids in Melon Mission, one of our projects in Kenya, has that basic right to clean water and we would like to thank David Lloyd for allowing us to use their amazing facility to raise these vital funds”.

General Manager Jordan McGarvie added: “We are delighted to be able to offer our superb indoor swimming facility to raise these vital funds and it’s fantastic that we can support a charity from Swindon in this way”.

Melon Mission in Nakuru in Kenya has over 450 destitute street children it tries to provide food, water, clothing and an education for but relies solely on donations to run. The Younite Foundation, a registered charity established in 2016 in Swindon to help young people in Swindon and Wiltshire and two projects in Kenya, has raised over £20,000 this year for Melon Mission. As you might expect, such perfection comes with a price tag to match - The tasting menu is £89 per person and wine pairings are available for £55 per person. But to my mind you are left with a memory that will linger with you for years.

Fantastic feast of leek and feta fritters dash of milk (if necessary) sunflower oil, for frying salt & black pepper For the dip: zest & juice of ½ lemon 150g crème fraîche sumac lemon wedges, to serve Heat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4.

Lightly fry the leeks in the butter and oil in a frying pan over a medium heat until starting to soften, about 7 minutes. Whisk the eggs and crème fraîche until light and starting to increase in volume. Sift in the selfraising flour, gram flour, if using, and baking powder and gently mix into a batter. Fold in the leeks, feta and tarragon. Add a pinch of cayenne and some salt and pepper.

You should have a consistency that

will drop slowly from a spoon. If too dry, add a dash of milk; too wet, add a pinch of flour.

Pour oil into a frying pan to a depth of about 5mm and heat until a test teaspoonful of batter sizzles immediately. Using a spoon, add three or four separate dollops of batter to the pan. Push each one with the back of the spoon until you have small patties about 8cm across.

Cook until golden, about 3–4 minutes on each side. Remove the cooked fritters to a baking tray and repeat until you have used up the batter.

When all are done, place the fritters in the oven for 10–12 minutes to warm through. Meanwhile, make the dip. Mix the lemon zest into the

crème fraîche with a pinch of salt and add the lemon juice to taste. Sprinkle liberally with sumac and serve with the lemon wedges. www.riverford.co.uk/recipes

It was a huge success but it’s the stream of dramas that go on in the background and solving them that I enjoy.

We based ourselves at the Richard Jefferies Museum this year which was a first-class venue except for the driveway.

mess with the previous week’s rain. There were muddy footprints all over Jefferies house and we reckoned the magnificent tent floor in the garden would be a disaster.

We considered gravel (no time), bales of hay (even bigger mess), every suggestion considered and rejected. Then the Eureka moment, how about carpeting the driveway.

Jamie, who is an enthusiastic woman, and I went to The Carpet Warehouse where the wonderful manager gave us access to the dumpster out back. I lifted the lid

The main event kicks off at Wharf Green at 5pm with Disney songs from Saara, who came second in 2016’s X Factor and is the voice of Anna in the Finnish dub of Frozen, and Lewis, plus dancing from Swindon Dance, Julie Scotts Dance Academy and Maisie Long. The evening event will be hosted by Ben and Mel from Heart Radio and a festive fireworks finale will bring the day to a close.

The big day is being organised once again by inSwindon BID Company.

From the RAF to writing romances

"Although she hadn't come here to look for a man there was no denying how she'd reacted to the sight of him".

Having read a small extract from Not Too Old For Love: Grace's Turmoil, I am dying to know the outcome to this endearing romance from Swindon author Peter Perrin.

Aside from dabbling in short stories and poetry, Peter earnestly clarifies that he has no background in writing.

No classes. No courses. He is "writing this for love, not money".

So, how does a retired RAF weapons engineer end up writing a book?

Peter explains: "I'm not a natural writer, but I wanted to keep my mind sharpe at 69. It became a hobby.

"I'm definitely not your typical

pensioner - I still play on the Playstation 4."

Set in a retirement village in England, Not Too Old For Love is intended to paint older generations in a different light.

Peter's point is that he believes older people can still have relationships, friendships and sex.

He insists that the book is not erotic or hot, but a sweet romance with intrigue. He's also

adament that 70 is the new 50.

The characters in the retirement village, such as Grace, Arthur and a mysterious femme fatale, are not based on anyone in particular but as Peter quite rightly points out it's hard to write about people based on nothing. He's taken dress styles and quirks from local locations, such as Coleview's Social Club.

He humbly admits: "There's a

little bit of me in there."

Taking on such a lengthy project has taken perseverance. When such blocks do occur, Peter reverts to painting or fishing which enables him to quietly think and put pen to paper. He explains how this gives room for the words to flow, as spending time solely at the computer runs the risk of the story becoming sterile.

Should that fail, Peter turns to his wife Anne.

He affirms how: "Anne's read everything. She's very sharpe at picking things out that do and don't work."

The book will be released between November and January on ebook. Peter's hoping sales will allow the book to be considered for hard copy also.

Whilst on this journey, Peter's characters have ignited so many twists and turns that there are talks of a sequel.

It would be quite a surprising revelation to find out that you haven’t heard of Janet Garret, or at least her Puppy Skool.

Janet’s business has been running in Swindon for 12 years now, from a cow shed conversion, turned family home come puppy paradise.

Naturally it is of no surprise that dogs have always been present throughout Janet’s life from a Rough Collie to Great Danes, then Deerhounds to Shih Tzus, and finally her award winning Bouviers des Flandres.

1. Choose your puppy wisely, and make sure you see the mother. Also make sure you visit several times before taking your puppy home 2. Feed your dog the best you can afford 3. Book your puppy into school as soon as you know you're getting one as classes fill up quickly 4. Rome wasn't built in a day! Dog training is a process of building and rewarding - it requires a lot of patience 5. If you have an older dog, instead of dog training classes, contact a behaviorist Despite this canine continuity, her professional life did not always revolve around dog training.

During her earlier career Janet was a bi-lingual PA at Arval for four years.

She spent a lot of her time conversing in French, so dog training in my eyes seemed to be quite a leap in career change.

This does however explain how she came across her beloved Bouvier breed, her first encounter being at a French café. As if reliving the experience, she lights up as she fondly recalls how enthralled she felt when she first met the friendly giant: "I just fell in love with him".

Unfortunately it was during this era in Janet's life that she was struck with the news that her baby grandson Jamie, who would have been 12 this year, passed away.

She graciously explained how the tragedy impacted her outlook on life: "You just start thinking to yourself 'what does it all mean?' and I wanted to know what I was doing with my life. So I went in a new direction."

With support across the board from her family, and love for dogs unquestionable, Janet soon found herself running small groups of puppy classes. Little did she know that 12 years down the line she would see 150 dogs a week come through her door.

Granted, before heading off down her new career path, Janet had already achieved various training cerftificates which settled my speculation as to how dog training was such a plausible and easy exchange.

Her impressive resume includes her Level 4 CTDI (Certified Trick Dog Instructor), Level 3 CertNut (Nutrition). She is also a published author, as well as a member of the Coape Association of Pet Behaviorists and Trainers (CAPBT) and Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).

However Janet is not the only high achiever at Skool, or home.

For those unfamiliar, Bouviers are a French breed and relatively uncommon in Britain. Janet, however, just so happens to have three of them; Mack, Gus and Riff.

But these aren't any ordinary Bouviers. I refer in particular to Mack, also known as 'the head boy'.

Mack is the first Bouvier in the world to win the Trick Dog Championship (TDCH) title in both the UK and USA. Telling tales of their life on tour, Janet brazenly admits: "I don't know who likes showing off the most, me or Mack!"

It becomes more evident how gratifying this way of life is for Janet, as she explained: "I can't see my life without dogs. It's strange when your work is also

your passion - I don't handle time off easily. I go out for the day and I feel like I've had a week off!

"But the best part about my job is when people tell me that my training has changed their life, and bond with their dog."

The latter strikes an emotional chord with Janet, but it becomes all the more apparent just how compassionate and generous she is. Amongst all her achievements, and in tune with her line of work, Janet also devotes much of her time to numerous chairites uncluding Dog Aid, Children in Need, Climb, Dogs Trust and Swindon Needy Dogs.

Never without Mack, speaking of her charitable work she said: "I love doing what I do, and seeing what joy dogs can bring. It's a huge pleasure and so much fun to help donate."

Thinking that nothing could take down this Garrett powerhouse, but I daringly breach the subject, Janet amiably revealed: "When I retire it'll be because of the weather, not the dogs."

There is no doubt in my mind that it would take extremely stormy weather to stop Janet Garett doing what she loves. swindonlink.com n November 2017

Ford Fiesta: the best bet in the hatchback race Back in the day the Ford Motor Company introduced a vehicle to get into the burgeoning small car market that followed the 1973 fuel crisis. It was revealed in 1975 as the Ford Fiesta and from 1976 began to sell like hot cakes. Many versions on, it still does.

Same as before - only better The latest model isn’t that different from its predecessor, a little sharper by design perhaps and certainly a tad bigger.

It is right on trend with current supermini thinking and looks very smart. It continues to be the most popular car in this sector but now has its work cut out as other car makers shape up for a fight.

As usual you can buy different trim levels depending upon budget, starting with ‘Style’ and followed by ‘Zetec’, ‘Titanium’ and the

posh ‘Vignale’. The vehicle seen here is in Zetec trim yet is well endowed with safety features and kit. Our test car also had an option bundle which added about £1,500 to the price but delivered a very complete package. At a total of £18,230 though, it seems to me to be getting a bit on the pricey side.

Engine Power In the engine department there is something for everyone. The star motor though is Ford’s tried and tested Ecoboost 1.0L threecylinder turbo-petrol engine.

My goodness it’s good. Maybe not the most fuel-efficient choice but it delivers on so many

levels that I’ll forgive it that.

This diminutive motor comes in three power levels: 98bhp, 123bhp and 138bhp. Our press vehicle had the 98bhp version driving through a crisp six-speed automatic gearbox and, although not officially quick on paper, proved through the gears to be lively and responsive and able to hold its own at motorway speeds.

Inside The Ford Fiesta This is the area that has seen the most change. Gone is that clunky old button-heavy dash from before, replaced by a much smarter and very well designed new layout that features (optionally) a 6.5” touchscreen set bolt upright in the centre.

Everyone who travelled in the car found this to be an excellent feature. Personally, I didn’t care for it so much. To me it seemed as if it was a last minute addition. Features included DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for those who love the new technology. For me, there was an optional CD player secreted in the glove box so my ancient and dated CD collection got a decent workout.

There’s more leg room both front and back and the seats are comfortable although it is still a bit tight in the back for big ‘uns. The boot isn’t huge and is beaten for space elsewhere.

Driving The Ford Fiesta Although the case for the Fiesta isn’t as clear cut as it once was, I’d still shade it as the best bet in the race for the small hatchback title.

The elusive cuckoo's ecological war

T

he cuckoo is one of the most iconic birds of summer and they are famed for their distinctive call, but how many people have actually ever seen one?

Cuckoos have declined by 50% over the past twenty years and they are now on the red list of birds of concern which means that they are afforded the highest conservation status.

People walking along the disused canal at Mouldon Hill should have seen them this summer because there were two males and one female present throughout May and June.

They have a fascinating life, spending the winter in sub-saharan Africa and then returning to Europe in April, they leave their breeding grounds very early because once they have laid their eggs they play no further part in

rearing the young. This year the first adult male had already returned to Africa by 17 July.

We know this because scientists at the British Trust for Ornithology have been fitting cuckoos with satellite tags so they can monitor how and where the birds migrate.

You can view this at www. bto.org/science/migration/ tracking-studies/cuckootracking The disused canal at Mouldon Hill has become overgrown and this provides the perfect habitat for reed warblers to nest in. This year there were more than 30 pairs in the canal.

Female cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and in most cases they specifically lay their eggs in reed warbler nests which is why the disused canal is so important for cuckoos.

They always only lay

one egg per nest because the young cuckoo will eject the eggs or young of the host to eliminate competition for food.

Cuckoos and reed warblers are playing out a fascinating ecological arms race as the cuckoo needs to lay its egg at about the same time as the reed warbler is laying its eggs and the cuckoo egg has to be similar in pattern to the reed warbler eggs to fool its host into thinking the egg is one of its own. Reed warblers will chase off the adult cuckoo if they see them and the good reed warblers are able to hide their nests sufficiently so that the cuckoo cannot find the nest.

Through the summer I put on chest waders and walk through the canal on a weekly basis to monitor the

reed warbler nests as part of a scheme run by The British Trust for Ornithology.

This year I found four cuckoo eggs laid in reed warbler nests, of these, two failed to hatch and the reed warbler chicks survived. In the other two nests the cuckoo eggs hatched and they managed to survive to leave the nest. I put individually numbered metal rings on these chicks so that if they are found or caught by someone else we will know where they have gone and how long they have survived.

Learning about productivity and survival in this way helps conservationists to conserve our birds.

I also managed to catch and ring one of the adult males and it will be very interesting to see if he returns next year.

It is pure luck that the canal has become overgrown in the way that it has but it is now a vitally important habitat for both reed warbler and cuckoo and it is essential that we preserve this habitat.

It would be even better if we can create some more reed beds in Swindon to try to encourage more of these special birds to our area.

Talking politics South Swindon MP Robert Buckland Swindon is a town that continues to grow and as your MP, one of my key priorities is the development of the local NHS. Alongside North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson and the late Dr Peter Crouch, Clinical Chair of the CCG I have pushed the Department of Health and NHS England for a fair share of support for Swindon to areas of comparable size and deprivation.

We also successfully campaigned for the budget period to be increased from two years to five years, ensuring that improvement plans could be made for the future, which included the building of the much-needed new Swindon NHS

Health Centre.

I recently attended the official opening of the £10m Health Centre, which serves a local population of 22,000 registered and 36,000 unregistered people in and around Swindon and includes two GP practices dental and podiatry and other NHS services. I was glad to hear about the difference that this excellent facility is having on patient health care. I am pleased that Prime Minister, Theresa May has recently announced as part of her speech at the Conservative Party Conference that a consultation on introducing an optout system for organ donation is to be held in England.

Swindon Borough Council Leader Cllr David Renard Promoting Swindon and making sure we are doing everything we can to ensure it prospers is a key part of my role.

I believe passionately in Swindon and what it has to offer to residents, workers, businesses and visitors and its potential to grow and offer even more in the future.

In recent years I found it a little frustrating to be at various meetings listening to other places shouting about how great they are when I know we are just as good if not better. So I was delighted to see the launch of the Switch on to Swindon (SOTS) campaign at the start of the year.

Switch on to Swindon (SOTS) is led by a board of members from the local business community who oversee the marketing campaign and the ever expanding ambassador network. The aim is to change perceptions to support existing businesses and attract new ones to invest.

The council is right behind this but I felt from the outset that the business community had to take the lead.

And businesses certainly have risen to the challenge with over 500 signing up as ambassadors already. Since its launch in January, the campaign team has been focussed on developing high quality material and building the ambassador network.

The underlying principle of Switch-on-toSwindon is mutual benefit.

So when the campaign produces an amazing film, a beautiful book, an image library they know that will be of value to organisations in some way.

In return the more people using those resources means that Swindon is being presented in the best possible way more consistently.

The consultation will outline ways to increase rates of organ donation and propose a new approach where every person would be deemed to have given consent unless they choose to opt out. Any changes will take place after the views of all sections of our community have been looked at.

Plans to ban the sale of ivory were also set out at the Conference.

The proposals will protect elephants and help combat poaching by removing opportunities for criminals to trade illegally-poached ivory. When I unveiled the superb life-size elephant sculpture at the late Lord Joffe's Lidington home last

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson Last month I was delighted to be invited to take part in the Topping Out ceremony for the Great Western Academy; the new secondary school at Tadpole Farm.

The topping out ceremony marks the final beam being installed on the building and I was honoured to be asked to secure it in place. In January I broke ground as the building of the school got underway, and it was very rewarding to see how much progress has been made since then.

As North Swindon MP I have been working tirelessly with The Great Western Academy, both in Swindon and in Parliament, to secure funding and ensure that the project was successful. My community office opened its doors to the Great Western Academy as it held a drop-in event for prospective parents and pupils. Principal Graham Davis was on hand to answer their questions.

I have worked very hard to do as much as I can to secure its success. It was wonderful to see the prospective parents and pupils so eager to find out more, and I share their excitement for the school opening next September.

One issue which I have campaigned for passionately is animal welfare, and I am pleased it appears the government has listened and set out legislation to improve welfare standards and protect endangered wildlife.

The RSPCA heralded ‘a fortnight of incredible news’ for animal welfare in the UK, as plans to introduce tougher sentences for animal cruelty and a ban on the sale of ivory in the UK were announced.

The maximum sentence for animal cruelty is to increase to 5 years, a significant improvement from the previous 6 month maximum sentence.

Cllr Jim Grant, Swindon Labour Group Leader I can start this article with excellent news. The planning application for four large homes within the Lydiard Park boundaries has been rejected by the council. This application was objected to by lots of residents and I congratulate Labour’s Lydiard & Freshbrook Councillor, Matthew Courtliff, for speaking out against this application in the Council Chamber.

Labour are proud to have saved Lydiard Park from being transferred to the private sector and the battle for Lydiard’s future continues. An application to build 48 homes within sight of the park by Taylor Wimpey was withdrawn earlier this year.

Opposition to this application has come for two reasons. Firstly because the application is within the essential Lydiard area and the fact these homes would be in the Wiltshire local authority area -people living in these homes would be using Swindon’s services but paying Council Tax to Conservative-run Wiltshire.

The issue of people living on the Swindon borders, paying Council Tax to Wiltshire while using Swindon’s services, is one of fairness. Two recently built estates essentially in West Swindon but in the Wiltshire local authority area- the Mustang Way and Ridgeway Farm estates off of Purton Roaduse Swindon’s services but pay Council Tax to Conservative-run Wiltshire. More land just outside the West Swindon borders will be applied for housing development and as the government forces Swindon to expand, this issue will only increase.

That is why Labour will be campaigning for action to be taken. We pledge, if we win next May’s Local Elections, to make residents living on Swindon’s borders, using Swindon’s services, pay Council Tax to Swindon. This issue of fairness has been ignored by all parties for too long and it is Labour who will tackle this.
