Community News Promoting Swindon as a welcoming, supportive place to all A evening of talks and moving poetry, music and dance from around the world and frantic samba driving on 13 October was attended by 200 people to launch a campaign to make Swindon a City of Sanctuary (CofS).

The aim is to raise the profile of the town as a place that promotes a culture of inclusion and hospitality towards refugees and asylum seekers.

CofS chair Nicola Johnson said: “People have come to our country to escape persecution but in troubled times there is uncertainty and fear here. There are good and kind people here who want to do what they can to create an atmosphere of welcome and harmony for people on the margins of society. Refugees and asylum seekers are not faceless or nameless, they all have their own stories like everybody who reads this article, people who all have so much to contribute, no matter where we are from.”

South Swindon MP Robert Buckland addressed the launch event saying: “This is such a brilliantly supported event, a great testament to the town we live in.

without the inflow of people from all over the world during the last 175 years.

“As solicitor general for the government I’ve seen the rise in hate crime - it has no place in Swindon or in the country. We must support the victims and prosecute the perpetrators.

“I’m proud there are willing people involved in organisations like the Harbour Project promoting inclusion and support of people who have come to our town in need of help.

I would urge everybody to support the City of Sanctuary movement and make a practical contribution wherever they can, however small.”

Panto star Ryan Thomas announced to turn on Swindon’s Christmas Lights inSwindon BID Christmas Lights Switch On will move this year from the traditional Thursday night to a weekend of free activities on 19 and 20 November.

Swindon’s Enchanted Christmas will launch on Saturday 19 November from 11am.

The Main Stage in Wharf Green will be live from 5:15pm.

Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas, who is starring in this year’s Wyvern Theatre pantomime Cinderella, will switch on the town centre lights at 6pm, illuminating the town centre.

Community News Council compromises on parishing boundaries Swindon Borough Council’s cabinet approved the final plans for the town’s new parishing boundaries at their meeting in October.

They were modified after a consulation. Critics have consistently argued against changes to specific boundaries between areas of Swindon and the financial implications of the council parishing proposals.

The latest version of maps show the South Swindon area proposed in August has been scrapped in favour of a much larger Central South Swindon parish covering six ward areas; Old Town, Central, Eastcott, Park South and joint wards of Walcot and Park North as well as Lawn and Badbury Park.

This means only three new parishes are now planned for Swindon, with one large parish covering all areas south of the railway line.

Nythe parish will still be asked to take on the areas of Eldene and Liden, whilst Blunsdon St Andrew parish will be split to form a new St Andrew Parish Council and Blunsdon Parish Council.

As Swindon Borough Council seeks to reduce their costs by 2020, parish councils will be

asked to take on services such as grass cutting and street cleaning, which could expand to include management of community centres and libraries. £3 million of resources are to be made available to these new authorities to act as transitional funding, although increases to precepts will probably still be a key financial talking point.

One of the main concerns in August was that the Central South Swindon parish would incur a much higher precept due to maintenance of the retail centres in the area. The council had been in talks with local business representatives in the town centre to secure a voluntary contribution of £400,000 to offset a potentially higher parish precept cost, but it appears this could not be agreed.

As such it has been proposed that Swindon Borough Council maintains its contract in the town centre for maintenance.

The council still have to approve existing borough councillors to be appointed to run the new shadow parish councils which will be actively taking on services from 1 April 2017.

The boundaries for Swindon’s new parishes

This will be followed the month after with elections for parish council members, which will be distributed as 15 councillors for the West Swindon parish, 15 for Central North Swindon and 23 for the larger Central South Swindon parish.

Community News SWADS group receive community funding for addiction bereavement service

Swindon’s Supporting Well-being and Developing Stability group, known as SWADS, has secured funding from the Wiltshire Community Foundation to run a Bereavement by Addiction group, starting on 1 November.

The new service has been created to give local people suffering bereavement through addiction a place to express their thoughts and feelings in a safe and supportive environment.

Community News Ball record attempt raises £7,000 for charities Make The Dock connection An attempt to break the record for the number of people taking part in a Swiss Ball exercise class was almost achieved on 30 September.

Whilst the 407 packed into the David Lloyd Club in North Swindon exceeded the previous highest number, raising hopes that they had captured the world record, there was dismay when news came through that a gym in Ireland had attracted 433 participants.

However the Swindon event raised more than £7,000 for three local charities, chosen by the newly established Younite Foundation: • Jessie May, a home based hospice which supports children and their

families; • Bios mobile youth work project; • Melon Mission, an outreach project supported by Swindon volunteers helping to build a school for orphans and destitute children in Kenya.

“Everyone had a great time in what was a terrific turnout by the people of Swindon”, said James Phipps, CEO of Excalibur Group which organised the event. “Whilst it’s great to try and set records, this second event brings the total raised to more than £15,000 which will go such a long way to helping people who really need support, in many cases this can be life changing.”

Ten years since Swindon community farm threatened with closure The November 2006 Link magazine reported that the Swindon Borough Council member responsible for finance had proposed terminating the lease agreement with Lower Shaw Farm in Old Shaw Lane, West Swindon in order to ‘develop’ the 3-acre site for executive housing.

The farm’s directors, workers, and users were unhappy and there was immediate public outcry, and a flood of angry emails and phone calls to councillors across the town.

Lower Shaw Farm had been a centre of educational, cultural and community development, with a particular focus on being environmentally-friendly since 1975, but always on uncertain short team leases.

Matt Holland and Andrea Hirsch have run the farm since 1980. Matt said: “In any kind of relationship, whether personal or business, you need stability and security to allow imagination to flow and ambitions to grow, for plans, investment, and commitment to be made.

“Ten years ago, the farm’s future looked in doubt. We understood the problems facing a cashstrapped council. Both we and they recognised the need to look closely at things, to consider the pros and

cons, to consult and negotiate in civilised fashion, and not confuse the notional development price of the farm with its real value and its role as a community asset. It was a question of long-term use and value, or short-term profit from development.”

Slow negotiations went on for five years and it emerged that the actual development value was far less than the council had at first thought after English Heritage indicated that no new houses could be built close to the Grade II Listed farmhouse.

“From that point on, good sense prevailed,” said Matt. “We would like to thank the then council leader

Rod Bluh for his open mind, his foresight and wisdom for seeing long term possibilities for the farm.

And he did so by taking action.

“After years of consultation and reports, he made the time to visit the farm with the then council chief executive Gavin Jones. After a good look round and lengthy discussion, I recall Rod saying: ‘You know, I’m beginning to see things in a new light’; to which Gavin added: ‘There is something magical about this place.’ That was a turning point.“ It was in November 2011 that agreement was reached, and the farm’s trustees and Swindon Council signed a 25 year lease.

With security, Matt and Andrea and an army of helpers and co-workers have invested time, effort, and money into improving outbuildings, general facilities and increasing the range of courses, all available to people both from Swindon and further afield.

The farm is also used for meetings and conferences, a weekly walking group and a community cafe as well as the base for a children’s project and the long-running Swindon Festival of Literature.

Notwithstanding its urban location, Lower Shaw Farm retains a rural charm with a red tractor in the yard, ducks and hens free-ranging, sheep grazing in the paddock, and pigs rooting about in the orchard.

Matt commented: “Despite the farm’s outwardly ramshackle appearance, it is run with an inner military order. We are direct service providers. We aim to serve people well, particularly serving Swindon well. And the fact that our courses are so popular suggest that we may be getting things right.”

Stagecoach have announced that changes are coming to bus services 6, 8, 9, 10, 71, 80 and 81 with a new route, service 4 from Tadpole Garden Village to the town centre.

The new route will run via St Andrew’s Ridge and Cricklade Road.

Buses will run every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday during the day.

Police launch ‘One-Team’ approach to neighbourhood safety Wiltshire Police is rolling out a new policing model across the county and Swindon which is designed to improve the service the public receives, writes Siobhan Stayt from the constabulary press office.

The Community Policing Team model, which has been successfully trialled in towns across Wiltshire, combines the officers in the separate Neighbourhood Policing and Response teams, so that communities benefit from a ‘One Team’ approach.

It also brings together staff and officers from other departments, such as local crime investigators, 101 and 999 call-takers, and officers from the Special Constabulary. This means crimes will be investigated effectively and efficiently from the moment they are reported.

The new model also encourages teams to share information about cases, improving communication and local intelligence gathering.

The decision to introduce Community Policing across Wiltshire and Swindon was made by Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson and Chief Constable Mike Veale.

Mr Macpherson said: “My role is

to give the people of Wiltshire and Swindon the best policing service possible. I set the strategic direction with excellent professional advice from Chief Constable Mike Veale.

“Community Policing builds on the success of Neighbourhood Policing Teams. It adds to the local community team resources such as local crime investigators, case file builders and call handlers.

“By bringing these teams together, we will provide an improved service to our communities. Another crucial aspect is that the public will have a single point of contact should they become victims of crime.”

He added: “I am keen to receive feedback from the public about how Community Policing is working for them. I can promise that I will listen carefully to the feedback and take action as required.”

The Community Policing Team model has made the most of investment in new technology, such as 3G laptops and smart phones.

This means officers can work outside the police station and maintain a strong visibility and community presence in the villages, towns and cities they serve.

Mr Veale commented: “When we

Residents of Toothill were given the chance to comment on proposals to improve community facilities in the area at a series of consultation events in September and early October.

The ideas have been developed

by Toothill Big Local, the committee responsible for spending £1 million of lottery money allocated to the area. They are based on consultations over the last four years which show that residents want more things to do and places to do them, and the opportunity to do them with other people.

Those who attended the presentations at Toothill Community Centre and West Swindon Library were asked to comment on four options: 1. Replace Toothill Community Centre, which opened in 1984 at the village centre, with a new, energy efficient modular building next to Toothill Farm on Bodiam Drive. A basketball half-court and an all weather 5-a-side football pitch on the site of the old scout barn are also proposed; 2. Replacing Toothill Community Centre on its present site at the village centre with a new, energy efficient modular building; 3. Rebuilding the existing community centre, reconfiguring the internal layout and making it more energy efficient; 4. Refurbishing, improving the facilities and redecorating the existing community centre.

None of the above include the licenced bar that is presently

available in the existing building There is also a fifth option of doing nothing, but TBL chair Kareen Boyd said the committee is concerned that progress on spending the million pounds needs to be made. “We know residents want us to provide the area with community facilities which are fit for the 21st Century that will both improve the life of residents now, and will be sustainable beyond the 10 years of the big local project.

“We’ve been doing this by funding small projects, events and scholarships, and putting forward options for a major investment in community centre facilities.

“No decisions have been made and we have clearly set out a series of stages where everybody can have their say and will be able to vote for their preferred course of action.”

TBL will be sending a newsletter to all residents in December reporting on the recent consultation and setting out the next steps which will lead to a public vote in March.

TBL committee member Peter Egan added: “I’d like to think we have come up with proposals for a flexible community building that is fit for purpose for another 30 years.

“Whatever is decided will require approval by Swindon Council and also the Big Lottery. But we are nearly at a point of using the money or losing it if we are unable to make progress.”

Write a novel in 30 days Swindon Central Library is hosting a month long challenge to help as many people in the town as possible to write an entire novel during November.

This personal challenge is organised nationwide by non-profit organisation Office of Letters and Light and is run by volunteers in each town across the country.

Participants aim to write 50,000 words of original fiction (usually a novel) between 1 November and 30 November, with free events running throughout the month for people to write alongside other participants and offer each other support.

Swindon based volunteer Victoria Boulton says: “Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel.

“Nobody looks over your shoulder.

Your writing can be as rubbish as you like. All you have to do is write 50,000 words in one month (that’s roughly 1667 words a day) and at the end … you’ll have a book.

“If you stop to think about it, writing a novel in a month might be crazy– but it’s a genius kind of crazy. It’s brilliant. It’s a lightbulb pinging on in your brain.

“NaNoWriMo is a fun, seat-ofyour-pants approach to creative writing. It needs work for sure, but you’ll have written it. And earned bragging rights for being a novelist, which is a nifty title.”

The project launches at Central Library on Sunday 30 October, 12pm to 3.30pm. There will be writing workshops at the library every Saturday in November from midday to 3.30pm.

West youngsters challenged to write about their community for a new Darkmouth book BT and Barclays are giving budding young authors in West Swindon the chance to co-write a new book by the end of November with bestselling author of the Darkmouth series Shane Hegarty.

In partnership with HarperCollins Children’s Books, Shane has written the first chapter to kick-off the competition and inspire the rest of the story. Set in the Darkmouth universe, heroes Emily and Damian set-off on a whirlwind adventure in pursuit of a mythical monster.

This is a chance for under 18s to receive guidance from a local Barclay’s Digital Eagle, to continue the story, writing a 500-word chapter about Emily and Damian’s monster-hunting exploits in their local area.

or memories of their hometown.

This competition encourages young people to share their experiences of growing up in Swindon and include everything they love about the area - its quirks, local landmarks and unique history.

Social activities for the over 55s is a good way to boost better health Researchers at Harvard University have discovered that having few or no friends could be as deadly as smoking, according to Martin Preston of U3A Swindon.

They’ve found a link between loneliness and the levels of the blood clotting agent Fibrinogen which can cause heart attacks and stroke. Social isolation is believed to cause an increase of the clotting agent which could lead to higher blood pressure and a build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries.

The study found that people with just five others in their social network had 20 per cent higher levels fibrinogen than those with 25. The loss of 10 to 12 friends had the same impact on levels as taking up smoking.

Martin commented: “The British Heart Foundation say we cannot conclude definitely that social isolation directly causes heart problems and say more research is needed to look at the link.”

He agrees it will be some time before firm conclusions can be reached, but this research suggests there’s good reason to take steps

to fight loneliness and isolation by finding out what an organisation like U3A can offer you, or somebody you know who does not have much social interaction.

He added: “The underlying aim of U3A is that companionship and social interaction are key benefits of taking up new interests and sharing them with like-minded people.

Music, exercise, learning languages, visiting places of interest and many other activities make joining one or more of U3A’s 140+ groups possibly the best thing a retired or semiretired person can do.

“We all know life changes as we get older. We also know there are a lot more older people than ever before and fewer services available to help us. So it is vital to stay active in mind and body as well as socialising. U3A is a member driven organization which allows people to connect with others, to challenge themselves, to help others, to have fun and a lot of laughs to stay active in mind and body.”

Time to put pupils above politics says head

North Swindon headteacher Jo Garton has announced her departure from Bridlewood Primary School, citing the government’s ‘hopeless’ assessment system, narrowing curriculum and the impact of using children as guinea pigs for political ends.

In a letter to parents in late September Mrs Garton writes: ‘The continual criticism of schools by the media and the government, encourages a small minority to expect more than can possibly be given, particularly with the shrinking amount of money coming into the service.

‘Children with special needs have to wait years to be diagnosed, putting unmanageable strain on teachers and their parents. Added to which the mental health and social care services for children are completely inadequate through underfunding.

‘Most of all I do not believe that the government have the correct curriculum. How can it be right in the twenty-first century that children are wasting time on Roman numerals, but are not able to use calculators?

‘The National Curriculum is 50 per cent English. I have two English degrees, but even I think that this cannot be considered broad and balanced. Added to this the interim assessment framework in year six is absurd and further narrowing the primary curriculum.’

The confusion in assessment of Year 6 last year and early Summer 2016 draws her particular criticism.

“I do not object to assessment, let us be clear,” she said. “But the last straw for me has been the unreliable and inconsistent testing procedures which has put enormous pressure on teachers and children. We had children anxious and sobbing which upsets the atmosphere in school and at home.

“Government says there isn’t a problem, but experienced teachers are leaving in their droves. It’s

so terribly sad that our children are tested at every turn and the system is geared to follow processes when primary school, where the foundations of a child’s education takes place, should be focussed on teaching and learning.

“To illustrate the effect on Bridlewood, we were in the top 6 per cent of primary schools in the country for reading last year, yet this year only 50 per cent of our children met the expected standard in reading.

“This is not because the children are not able or because our teaching was any less good, but because the government set a standard for tests which is completely unreasonable. In writing, there is no way that using hyphens, dashes and semi-colons should be more important than the actual content of the writing. I suspect than almost all great writers would fail the government’s standard.

“What is shocking is that secondary schools are telling us that they largely ignore the results of all this testing and conduct their own assessments so they can find out about the children who start in Year 7. Even Ofsted have issued guidance that the data from writing assessments should be ignored because it is unreliable.”

Mrs Garton and her staff were ready for an Ofsted inspection in the last school year, but as it has not yet happened and it is five years since the last, she has committed to lead the school until next Easter in order to ensure that Bridlewood retains or exceeds its good rating.

In her letter to parents, she commented: ‘I have always said that the children of Bridlewood are wonderful. Thank you for sharing them with me - they have been a complete pleasure.’

She also expresses her thanks to the teachers and support staff who make Bridlewood a happy school and the governors for their great support of the school. swindonlink.com n November 2016

Volunteers at Citizens Advice Swindon are providing advice and support for around 150 people per week and the number needing their support continues to grow.

Giving something back to your community is just one reason to volunteer for an organisation that nationally involves 23,000 unpaid support staff.

Volunteers at Citizens Advice Swindon receive full training and support in a range of subject areas.

This includes training in benefits, debt, employment, housing, immigration and other legal matters, as well as interviewing, negotiation and customer service skills. This means that there is something for everyone who wants to learn new skills, develop existing ones or find a new challenge.

make a huge difference to people’s lives. From helping a family facing eviction to supporting somebody to claim the benefits they are entitled to because of a disability. PAT dog Ted is a perfect volunteer A friendly four-legged visitor to the Children’s Unit at Great Western Hospital is helping some of Swindon’s youngest patients forget about their illness for a while.

Sarah Merritt, divisional director of nursing for paediatrics and gynaecology, said golden retriever Ted brings smiles to young faces. “Behind Santa Claus, I think it’s safe to say that Ted is the most popular visitor to the unit.

He’s a really playful character and

it’s easy for us to see the difference he makes to the children.”

Hilary Coates of Wagging Tails dog care said she gives Ted the chance to enjoy doggy downtime. “He takes everything in his stride; he’s perfect as a PAT dog. We have the pleasure of looking after Ted and his owner Gill has written a nice testimonial for our website.”

Swindon film-makers launch funding campaign Swindon film-makers Alex Secker and Marcus Starr have launched a funding campaign for their debut feature film, Follow The Crows.

The film, produced by Rrats Kram Films and Infinite 8 Productions, as well as Secker’s own 22six Productions, is the first of its kind in the Swindon area.

The pair are running the campaign in the hopes of raising enough money to complete postproduction on the project and enter it into international film festivals.

As well as the usual thanks and gratitudes on social media, the film-making duo are offering some unique perks for benefactors, including figurines of the key cast, as well as posters, DVDs and access to a wealth of behind the scenes content.

Set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, which was filmed in and around the Wiltshire area, using locally sourced actors and crew.

Follow The Crows tells the story of a small group of a survivors who wander the world, searching for

purpose. It stars local actors Max Curtis and Daniella Faircloth, as well as a host of local people in supporting roles.

It is the first independent feature film to be shot in Swindon.

“I’ve been making shorts for years,” says Alex Secker, the film’s writer and director, “but, aside from Silent Assassin, I’ve never really been that successful in having festivals accept them.

“It’s very competitive, the advent of digital cameras means that almost anyone can make a short film and enter it into a festival, it’s harder to get your work seen.

But there’s a smaller market for independent features, a lot of effort goes into even just getting the people available, let alone then making the thing.”

Filming finished in May of this year and post-production has been underway ever since, in order to release it into the world of international film festivals to find a distributor. /followthecrowsmovie

Swindon film crew brave Hurricane Matthew Two film-makers from Swindonbased Firebird Films have braved the ravages of Hurricane Matthew in Orlando, Florida to prove they can overcome a category four storm and still deliver.

Ross Mackenzie and Hugo Beanland have been working for US client Freeman and used the

oncoming hurricane as part of their shoot rather than shy away from it.

Ross said: “As a film company this isn’t the first time we’ve dealt with natural disasters. We got caught out in Nepal during the devastating earthquake two years ago but this hasn’t stopped us delivering either project on time.”

guide to Live Music in Swindon for November Swindon’s live music scene is as diverse and widespread as any in the country. Whether you like chilled out acoustic music, blues, folk, pop, dance, electronica, rock or any other genre you can think of, the scope for musical entertainment is endless.

We will start things off with a bit of underground desert rock shall we? If you’ve heard of a group called Queens of the Stone Age, then you won’t be expecting any of their members to leave their stadium rocking circuit and play in Swindon any time soon. So the next best thing would be some former QOTSA members right?

Former Queens drummer Alfredo Hernandez glues this underground supergroup together and collectively they produce a sound that is psychedelic, raw, melodic and has something to say. Their musical bond comes from years of playing in their respective bands often together in California’s desert cities, Los Angeles and on many European tours, so catching them in Swindon on 1 November is a rare treat indeed. Local support comes from Rewire the Time Machine and Phoxjaw.

If that doesn’t provide your rock fix, underground legends Solemn Sun are coming to Level III on Commercial Road on 25 November.

Swindon has local rockers All Ears Avow to thank for this incredible show, as they continue to build their national market share as one of the best up and coming acts in the UK. They have befriended Solemn Sun’s driving force, Jim Lockey, and are able to pull in this high calibre act to the town seemingly at will. Couple this with

stars in the making Polar Front and you have one of the best shows the south west has seen this winter.

We thoroughly recommend getting down to Level III for this!

If you’re looking for something a little more refined, dignified and delicately beautiful, the musings of Shaun Buswell may be just the ticket. Mr Buswell has toured the nation on multiple occasions, creating pop-up orchestras from the general public to perform at the Shephards Bush Empire and

Glastonbury Festival to name just two.

The utterly chaotic genius of the man is almost indescribable, yet his music ebbs and flows like the calmest of tributaries into a sea of serenity and thought. If this sounds like your kind of show, you can see Shaun Buswell at Baila Coffee and Vinyl in Old Town on 13 November.

And finally, as Monty Python used to say, time for something completely different. The Teddy White Band perform rhythm and blues in an aw-inspiring display that was once described by our group editor as “like walking right into the Louisiana bayou.

The musicianship on display was extraordinary. A quality on show in the live set of this band is hardly seen in this day and age.” So if they have a seal of approval like that, you know they must be doing something right. You can check out the Teddy White Band at The Victoria on 18 November.

Charity nights still going strong at Swindon restaurant

Started in 2008, popular Indian restaurant Bengal Square in Peatmoor has consistently run charitable fundraising nights donating all profits to worthy causes across the Swindon area.

Now, the restaurant is expanding this charitable evening to their newly reopened sister site Mantra in Old Town.

Held every Monday and Tuesday at Bengal Square, and every Tuesday at Mantra, the charity nights have raised over £100,000 to date which has been shared amongst local causes from youth football teams to Macmillan cancer research.

Owner Hanif Robbani said: “We

donate all profits raised on the evening to the cause of choice, and this can be further added to if the organisers hold a raffle, quiz or auction.

“Donations from ourselves of £350+ are not uncommon and the best night we’ve ever had raised a grand total of over £3,000.

“We are happy to host events for any worthwhile cause and it doesn’t necessarily have to be a charity.”

Swindon engineer receives deserved royal recognition Daniel Gooch, the great engineer of the Great Western Railway, largely overshadowed by IK Brunel, is the unsung hero of Swindon, the man who identified in 1831 the fields below the village on the hill as the ideal location for a locomotive maintenance works which grew to a sprawling factory and drove the town’s economic success for more than a century.

On 20 October he received due recognition when HRH Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall unveiled a locomotive engine plaque naming the forecourt of Swindon railway station Sir Daniel Gooch Place.

She went onto meet VIPs and people involved in the organisation of Swindon175, the year long series of events during 2016 marking the start of new Swindon.

Project manager Caroline Black said: “We were thrilled and honoured that the Duchess of Cornwall agreed to attend our event and unveil the plaque and the gateway to our town.

“In all honesty, the event could not have gone better. The Duchess

was so gracious and put everybody at their ease, particularly Alex and Jaydon from Robert Le King Primary School who presented flowers.

“It was so exciting that she was here to draw attention to our important celebrations to honour a great man and raise the profile of Swindon.

“The plaque on the wall next to the entrance of the railway station looks fantastic, really eye catching.”

Graham Carter of Swindon Heritage added: “It’s great Camilla came to the town to highlight the father of Swindon. For anybody interested in the history of the town, the recognition of Daniel Gooch has been a long time coming.

“I was really impressed by how long she spent with the people she was introduced to. I told her all about Swindon Heritage magazine and the several hundred editions we need to tell all the stories about the town which we have lined up.”

Butternut fennel and cumin soup In the third of a new series of recipes designed to be easy to cook but tasty and convenient the Link Magazine’s new cookery consultant Angela Barlow shows how to make a delicious dish for this time of year.

After the arrival of Halloween, Guy Fawkes night and with the nights drawing in we are reminded that whether we feel ready or not we are relentlessly sliding into the festive period.

But before we get all spruced up and tinsel tied, I wanted to offer a little culinary comma between October and December hence my recipe for butternut fennel and cumin soup.

It’s not only warming and cost effective but is a simple dish to prepare and due to the spice element gives a little kick.

It is also great for vegetarians or those with diabetes.

Firstly I prefer to roast the butternut squash on a baking tray as it gives a richer flavour and also

makes peeling much easier. l Preheat oven to 190C/170C fan l Cut the butternut squash into large chunks keeping the skin on but removing the seeds. Place on a baking tray and drizzle with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. l Roast in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove and let it cool.

When cool enough to handle remove the skin and cut into 2cm cubes. l Add a tablespoon of olive oil to a large saucepan or stockpot. Add the onion, ginger, garlic, fennel and cumin seeds and fry gently until soft, taking care not to burn the onion and garlic. Add the roasted butternut squash and stock. Bring to the boil and then reduce the heat and simmer for approximately

Ingredients for butternut fennel and cumin soup One large butternut squash - Olive oil - Salt and pepper - One medium red onion chopped finely - One thumb length piece of ginger peeled and finely grated - One clove of garlic crushed or finely grated - 1 tsp fennel seeds - 1 tsp cumin seeds - 800ml chicken or vegetable stock

15 to 20 minutes making sure the squash is tender. Remove from the heat and blend until smooth adding a little more water if the consistency is too thick. Season with salt and pepper.

l When ready to serve garnish with coriander and a swirl of single cream if desired.

This soup tastes delicious and is a hearty meal with or without a hunk of bread or croutons.

Billy Elliot comes to Commonweal Commonweal School continue their annual tradition of hosting a West End musical from 23 to 25 November as they bring Billy Elliot – The Musical to Swindon.

Ali Sutcliffe, head of expressive arts at Commonweal, said: “After our last production of West Side Story, we were keen to continue to do a musical with a gritty storyline.

We also wanted to choose a production with an emphasis on dance as we have such a strong dance contingent within the school.

“Approximately 90 students are involved in the production and with staff are going well above and beyond the call of duty rehearsing every day during lunchtimes and after school and also giving up their weekends to hone their skills prior to show week.”

Billy Elliot the Musical is based on the 2000 film Billy Elliot. The music is by Elton John, and the book and lyrics are by Lee Hall, who wrote the film’s screenplay. The plot revolves around motherless Billy, who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes during the miners’ strike in North Eastern England.

Swindon Wide Swindon shines at successful poetry festival Poetry column by Poetry Swindon’s Maurice Spillane

Swindon can be proud of itself after ten days of The Swindon Poetry Festival.

We had six days of poetry around the community – Central Library, Savernake Street Social Hall, Community Centre, Museum of Computing, Arts Centre, Sun Inn at Coate and Lower Shaw Farm.

Every evening we had local people join us, many of whom would not

normally go to a poetry reading – and they loved it and I love that.

There were over 100 at the Childrens’ Day alone and that was special. Swindon could yet be the epicentre for the revival of poetry in the UK. The final four days were in the Richard Jefferies Museum where we had the “Tent-Palace of the Delicious Air” as Jefferies himself described the sky. The tent was humming with workshops, and readings and music.

One of the big London publishers, Todd Swift, emailed me with this:

‘I have been attending festivals as a poet for over 25 years, and this was surely the best I have seen, in terms of spirit, friendliness, audience engagement, and general sense of a poetry friendly environment.’

All the visitors and poets said on social media and email that it was the friendliest festival in the UK, a reputation that Swindon well deserves.

To end on a high note how about these lovely lines from visiting poet, Cliff Yates, from his poem ‘One More Time’. It captures the high that we felt after a successful

festival with a down-to-earth celebration: The kite’s caught the wind, I’m hanging on, top of the cliff, just one more time.

Help commemorate Swindon’s Diana with a blue plaque Swindon has plaques, some might even be painted blue, but until this year the town did not have a scheme to install the traditional, standardised blue plaques commonly used in other towns and cities to mark historic sites.

This changed in early 2016 when Swindon Heritage launched its blue plaques project and paid for the first of what they hoped would be many across the town.

The honour of being the first went to Edith New, the Swindonborn suffragette who was at the forefront of the campaign for votes for women. The plaque was unveiled at her birthplace in North Street, Old Town.

Then, in September, there was a double unveiling of plaques dedicated to brothers Harold and Norman (‘John’) Starr, pilots who were both killed in the Second World War, at their birthplace - the former Regent Hotel, now the site of the Savoy in Regent Street.

These plaques, which cost more than £300 each to cast and install, were financed by crowdfunding.

Now Swindon Heritage are seeking support for a fourth plaque, dedicated to actress and movie star Diana Dors, born in Swindon in 1931.

Project manager Noel Beauchamp explained that before a funding appeal can be launched the permission of the property owners is needed. “Our experience so far is homeowners are enthusiastic and proud to have one on their wall,” he said. “There was an added complication with Diana Dors as nobody was quite sure where exactly a plaque should be mounted. We know she was born in the Haven Nursing Home in Kent

Road, but it is long gone and none of our sources could pin down where in the street it had been.

“So we had to do some detailed research to prove the correct address.”

There was a reason for choosing Diana Dors for plaque number four.

Noel added: “We want to celebrate the impact on Swindon and the world that a range of people have had; we also thought it was important to reclaim our international star, as ‘Our Diana’.”

The response to the latest appeal has been excellent, and Noel is on track to meet his target of unveiling it before Christmas.

But he is keeping the location close to his chest, as well as the identity of the person who has been lined up to unveil it. So watch this space for details, as well as news of future plaques, in 2017.

Youngsters at Bridlewood looking forward to their new exercise track

Bridlewood Primary School in Ash Brake has received a national lottery Awards for All grant of £9,500 to pay for an all-weather running track around the edge of the school field to be installed during half term at the end of October.

Jenny Hulse, Bridlewood PE coordinator who secured the money, said: ”We’re really excited by the award as I’ve been concerned that children get the chance to enjoy exercise as early as possible so that they continue when they’re at secondary school and college.

“The idea is that each class will jog around the track for 10 minutes every day. My class trialled the daily run in the summer term and

it was both a test of fitness and endurance, and also teamwork so that the whole group completed the challenge rather than see it as a race against each other.”

Jenny also arranges a wide range of sporting activities at the school and is looking forward to more children joining lunchtime and after-school clubs.

Headteacher Jo Garton said: “Children who enjoy exercise early are less likely to have health issues later in life. This lottery money will make this more fun for everyone.

And of course we’ll see the benefits in the classroom as it’s well known that aerobic exercise stimulates brain activity.”

I’ve been having to drive to work a bit more frequently than I have over the last 10 years.

Why do so many people put themselves through that when there is a good alternative for a lot of them?

There are roadworks all over the place, the queues form in exactly the same places at the same times every day and still people drive the 3 or 4 miles to work or to the shops or even shorter distances to drop the kids off at school.

One day, my journey to work (that usually takes just under 30 minutes on my bike) took me 57 minutes.

So, realistically, could you ditch the car for a small percentage of your journeys?

Think how great the roads are during the school holidays, when it’s estimated that traffic levels drop by 20%. To put that in to context, that same level of reduction could be achieved by people committing to not travel by car just once a week.

I know this is a cycling column but could you walk, take the bus or

car-share for just one day a week?

Of course, there are many people who cannot do this due to their schedule, or that they need to carry lots of things for work. But if only 50% of drivers could commit to cycling (or using any means of non-car transport) just once a week, we could reduce traffic by 10%.

That would help everyone get round quicker and maybe we wouldn’t then need all these roadworks that are trying to increase the capacity of the roads.

In other news, it has been announced that HSBC are the new sponsors of British Cycling, taking over from Sky who have done a lot of good work to encourage more cycling. Let’s hope HSBC can pick up where Sky have left off and improve things further.

Wildcats player-coach Aaron Nell insists his side are working harder in training in a bid to maintain their consistency over the festive season.

“It’s always an exciting time for everyone and I think it is periods like this that make English ice hockey so great,” he said..

Over the years, the coming months have been considered a time where the hard work really begins as teams up and down the league close in on the half way mark of the campaign and traditionally, the Wildcats begin to find their form, but this season the Cats came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and with the games coming at a relentless pace, this year is a little different.

“We’re looking forwards to a good run of games,” Nell continued.

“There are some tough games in there, but they are games that we are really excited for.

“It’s always an exciting period for everyone and I think it is times like this that make the game so great.

“The disappointment in the locker room after last season’s play offs defeat has carried over to this campaign and the entire roster are working towards gaining some long overdue success for the club.

On 14 October youngsters at St Francis Primary School celebrated the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, the last time a foreign power successfully invaded Britain.

Earlier in the term the children compared Saxon life under King Harold and the invasive Normans led by William, designed shields and learnt a war cry to show how the attackers and defenders kept their

spirits up.

To help children imagine the carnage of battle Premier Sports came into school to teach the skills of archery.

Classes also learnt more about British history since 1066 to create their own St Francis tapestry, illustrated by key events through the ages including the Brexit vote to break with Europe.

Runvember returns for 2016

Plans are underway for the 2017 Swindon Charity Ball, with organisations based in Swindon and around Wiltshire encouraged to apply to be a beneficiary.

Dashing through the snow for Swindon’s annual Santa Run Swindon’s premier Santa fitness event is back on Sunday 4 December to get you fit for the holiday season when the fifth Santa Run around Lydiard Park takes place in aid of Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Swindon Carers Centre.

Organised by Rotary Club of Swindon Phoenix, the 5km course includes a shorter routes of 2km and 3km and for those pushing a pram or who have very young children, you can run, walk, jog or stroll.

Last year’s event raised almost £6,400 for local causes including Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Breast Cancer Now. Santa suits for the adults and youths are provided on the day, and children will receive Santa hats.

There is a Zumba warm up at 10.45am and Father Christmas aboard his trusty sleigh will fly in before the event start at 11am.

Entry fees are adult: £15; youth: £8; child: £5; infants are free, as is the family dog who must be on a lead at all times.

Swindon environmentalist achieves Countryfile experience on offer BBC TV’s Sunday foray into the Woodland Group, which was set UK first to help prickly creatures Alexandra North, who grew up in Highworth, has been appointed to a unique job as Britain’s first hedgehog officer.

She took a degree in zoology at Exeter University before undertaking postgraduate research and working for Birdlife International.

Nationally the number of hedgehogs is declining rapidly. It is thought there are now one million of the nocturnal mammals compared to 30 million in the 1950s.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust identified the need for a specialist to work in and around Ipswich which apparently is a hedgehog hotspot.

Ali, as she’s known, is employed to sustain the unusually high number of hedgehogs in the town by raising awareness of residents.

She said: “Everyone loves hedgehogs which are incredibly important to the biodiversity of our landscapes and our wildlife.

“My role is to excite people in Ipswich to do all they can to

sustain the hedgehog population and help them to thrive.

“This includes practical steps which people everywhere can take. Hedgehogs cannot climb fences and walls so making holes the size of a CD is a good idea so they can forage for food in different gardens.

“They are lactose intolerant so please don’t leave out milk. They’ll eat cat or dog food, but they love slugs the most. So obviously slug pellets will harm them.

“If you have a pond, make sure there is a ramp for hedgehogs to climb out if they fall in when having a drink. It’s also really important to have a wild patch in your garden.

“It would be great if Swindon also became a hedgehog friendly town.”

If you’ve ever wondered ‘I could do that,’ the Peatmoor Community Woodland Group offers you the chance to have a go.

For almost 30 years the group has looked after the six acre copse close to Peatmoor Lagoon. It’s a remnant of the ancient royal hunting forest that covered North Wiltshire and has existed since ancient days. It was never cut down and turned into farm fields because of the boggy ground conditions due to the unusual geology of the area.

Up to World War I wood was used extensively for fuel, in construction and in agriculture. When Swindon Council purchased the land for the western expansion, the copse was a dark and overgrown area of trees of uniform size, left largely untouched probably since the second world war when wood is likely to have been used as a fuel source.

The copse is now an important ecological site yet very much a secret oasis in the town. Contrary to the idea that trees should be preserved at all costs, during winter months Peatmoor Community

Hazel in particular benefit from regular coppicing (cutting), regenerating over a seven year cycle. The copse is divided into seven compartments with a large area left untouched where nature takes its course. This old management technique encourages and sustains a wide variety of bird, mammal and insect life.

Doing practical things outdoors has been shown to improve mental and physical well being; think of Peatmoor Copse as a green gym. The group meets on the first Sunday of the month, 10am to 1pm, and newcomers who want to do something for the environment, try something practical outdoors and learn about woodland management are always welcome.

Children are welcome to come along and learn woodcraft skills but they must be accompanied by an adult. The site is not easy for people in wheelchairs and there are no toilets on site.

Look out for thrushes during the Autumn David Hawkins Matt Prior, Wiltshire Ornithological Society conservation officer, says Redwings and Fieldfares are now much in evidence.

If you stand outside after dark at this time of year there is a very good chance that you will hear a high pitched ‘seeep’ overhead.

This is the flight call of the redwing and you are witnessing migration happening right over Swindon. Redwings are a thrush, slightly smaller than a song thrush and they breed across Scandinavia.

They then migrate south for the winter and are present in very good numbers across the UK. They feed on berries, especially hawthorn and can be found wherever there are natural hedgerows. They also like other berries and are often found feeding on pyracantha and rowan. All of these trees and shrubs are suitable to be planted in gardens.

The best local places to look for redwings are Mouldon Hill Country Park and the adjacent Purton Wood, as well as Sevenfields Nature Reserve, because these locations have many high quality hedgerows containing lots of berries.

Redwings can form large flocks and they are often joined by another thrush called a fieldfare which also breed across northern Europe. Redwings are slightly smaller than fieldfares that are about the same size as a blackbird.

Fieldfares are much more a bird of open fields and hedgerows but occasionally one will take up residence in a garden, especially if it has a tree laden with berries.

Fieldfares give away their presence with a harsh ‘chack chack’ call as they fly overhead and they are more often encountered in large flocks early in the morning.

A great way to attract thrushes to gardens is to put apples out for them to feed on. This works especially well in cold weather when natural food is harder to

come by. Apples can be fed in a couple of different ways, either by scattering whole or cut in halves on the ground, or by cutting them in half and then sticking them cut side upwards on thorns or branches of trees.

Some people feed thrushes by scattering raisins or sultanas across the ground but this is quite an extravagant way of feeding birds.

Soft foods are also suitable: suet pellets are very successful and stale cakes crumbled up are good alternatives. Putting them out for the birds is much better than binning them.

Redwings and fieldfares migrate back to northern Europe between February and April, so enjoy them whilst they are here.
