Call for caring Christmas volunteers Swindon Christmas Care will again provide temporary shelter for homeless and lonely people and those in need over the Christmas period from 11am on Tuesday 24 December until 11am on Saturday 28 December, at Queen’s Drive Methodist Church Hall, Park South. Volunteers, who must be over 16 years old, and shift leaders are needed to help run the project. Preparation

The mistake here is that the two current detailed planning applications were not ‘called in’ so that they could be decided by councillors. This is fine for small applications such as household ones, but all big contentious applications with far-reaching consequences - such as Ridgeway Farm - should automatically be brought before elected councillors for scrutiny. The detailed applications are being decided by Wiltshire Council officers. It is now just a mess. And there is the land off Hook Street near Lydiard Park. After a two-year battle by community groups, councillors, residents and the local MP, the developer has won, again on appeal, the right to build 73 houses close to the park. Not far away, in Purton, Widham Farm has just completed its third appeal. Over the years, the house numbers have been steadily reducing from the initial 146 down to 50.

Following the ruling to allow the development, Lydiard Fields Action Group issued a statement: ‘We are very disappointed. The community was united in its objection to this development out of a genuine concern for the future of Lydiard Park and West Swindon. ‘All the land around Lydiard Park is at risk and more applications for development will no-doubt follow, taking advantage of the Council’s lack of evidence for a five-year housing supply. We might as well say to the developers: “here, take everything, build where you like.” ‘The draft local plan includes 26,000 new houses. This is going to have a colossal impact on the town and needs to be strategically planned with the community’s needs and aspirations at the forefront of every planning decision. We cannot therefore allow developers to have free rein. Why do we still not have a local plan, which if implemented would have protected the land in question? ‘The Lydiard Fields Action Group has worked hard to protect this land. We would like to thank everybody for their support.’

BBC innovation award for breaking new ground Graphic designer/animator Robin Littlewood, who lives in Oakhurst, received an award at the first ever BBC Production Awards in September for developing new ‘time-slice’ techniques for GoPro cameras. Learn to sing carols, but not as you know them If you're tired of the commercialisation of Christmas, and think nostalgically of the way it used to be, this may be something for you. Join in with a group of like-minded people from 5 November and learn to sing a variety of ancient carols from the West Country, both sacred and secular. You don't need any musical experience - just to enjoy singing. The carols will be taught by ear, although sheet music will also be provided for those who would like it. Some songs will be sung in unison, but most in three or four part harmony, either without instruments, or with a musical accompaniment. There will be six sessions on Tuesday afternoons from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at Rodbourne Methodist Church. The course is run by Swindon WEA (Workers' Educational Association). Important information relating to TCS Children’s Centres In July Swindon Borough Council consulted on changes to all the children’s centres in Swindon, including The Children’s Society children’s centres at Eldene, Croft, Robert Le Kyng and Salt Way. Their decision means that 80% of funding will be allocated to disadvantaged children, and the remaining 20% for universal family services. As a result the Croft and Eldene buildings will no longer operate as TCS Children’s Centres from January 2014. Reception children at Abbey Meads Primary School had a surprise visitor on 26 September when The Gruffalo emerged from their story books. He was invited to Swindon after author Julia Donaldson’s popular character was declared a favourite by the children when teachers made home visits earlier in the year. Although taken aback, even the wariest child soon became great friends with The Gruffalo who recognised masks of different characters in the story made by the children.

Appeal for real life childhood stories for new book supporting Wiltshire’s youth The Youth Life Project is looking for people of all ages and backgrounds to submit stories, poems or artworks that reflect their own young life experiences for inclusion in a compilation entitled Our Story. The project aims to restore the faith lost in young people and equip them with the skills required to make positive life choices. Profits from the book will support the charity’s activities on behalf of Wiltshire’s young people. Explaining the idea for the anthology, Youth Life Project founder Danielle Brown, pictured, said: “Our Story is part of the YouthStories campaign, providing a channel through which people can communicate their thoughts, feelings and experiences. “Our Story will help bridge the gap between young people and adults, and give the young people a platform to have their voice. “The stories from older people will show the youth how they have dealt with things in the past and

When Link publisher Roger Ogle visited the Far East, he took a copy of the summer edition of Swindon Heritage with him, featuring Diana on the cover, and just had to make the connection with one of the local landmarks in Kowloon. Founded in 1918, the Swindon Book Co changed its name in 1936 when it became fashionable for Eastern companies to incorporate the name of Western cities. The shop is close to a major railway terminus and its owner saw the connection with Swindon’s GWR heritage.
A Swindon shop much closer to home will feature in the winter edition of Swindon Heritage due for publication in mid-November. McIlroy’s department store closed in 1998 after 123 years of trading in Regent Street, and the magazine will include memories of its heyday, including from its last manager. The 84-page magazine, which costs £4.99, will be available at local outlets, including the Central Library. Back copies and subscriptions can be bought online via www.swindonheritage.com

inSwindon BID is a Business Improvement District, set up in 2007, which promotes, manages and co-ordinates operations and events in the town centre. It is mainly funded by the retailers and other businesses within the town centre area. In February 2012 the Company was successful in a renewal to secure the future of the company for a further five-years at a vote taken by the Business Improvement District investors. The Company manages the Street Team Ambassadors, the Security Radio Network, major events and campaigns such as the Christmas Lights Switch On and Armed Forces Day, as well as providing business support and training to investors.

Chloe, 9, was diagnosed in 2012 with the rare condition Coffin Lowry Syndrome characterized by craniofacial (head and facial) and skeletal abnormalities, learning difficulties, short stature, and hypotonia. As members of the public, we ask the leaders of Swindon Borough Council, Councillors Renard, Grant and Pajak and CEO Gavin Jones to fully support a full and credible review of Swindon's Standards Committee procedures. Standards of behaviour by those in public office are fundamental to an effective council. Recent serious events have rightly led to significant public concerns about the way that official complaints are being handled by SBC. A full review is needed to ensure major improvements are made and to rebuild public confidence. We believe that a working group needs to be established to undertake the important task of both scoping and conducting this review. We believe that this group requires a new and different approach to that previously endorsed by SBC’s Office of Law and Democratic Services. As MP Robert Buckland has already raised concerns on behalf of his constituents, it seems important that this is undertaken as a priority. Until this occurs, there can be little confidence in the existing process. The current proposal to slot this into the existing
standards committee programme (March 2014) could be perceived as a conflict of interest. We ask instead that it is addressed separately to encourage greater priority and transparency. To ensure balance, we propose a working group is set up comprising 8 individuals, including a chair, 3 members of the public, 3 SBC councillors and a member of the Office of Law and Democratic services. Public representation will ideally be members of the public who have experienced the way that their complaints were handled and who have views as to how to improve the process. We recommend participation from a councillor from each political group who has no connection to any recent complaints. The objective will be to create a process that ensures higher levels of openness and transparency and greater accountability, to benefit the community and our council alike. It is our intention to contact potential candidates for these positions and the role of Chair and trust that this will be supported by the leaders of our council. 45

Church coffees raise cash for Macmillan Freshbrook Church’s coffee morning on Saturday 5 October in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support proved a huge success. The church was busy with visitors who contributed £576. An area representative for the charity also gave a talk to the church’s youth group, and personal stories of how Macmillan’s support had helped families gave extra focus to the church’s fundraising efforts.

Dark nights are coming!
Winter is on its way, and with that comes the darker nights and adverse weather conditions. Many people are able to carry on walking and cycling through the winter months; it just requires some basic equipment. It’s important to be seen in dark or gloomy conditions, so bright, preferably high visibility, outer layers are recommended. Fluorescent cycle helmets, gloves and slapbands are also available to buy from bike shops. Please make sure you have good lights on your bike as pedalling without being lit up in the dark is asking for trouble. A set of waterproof over trousers can make the world of difference for rainy days and can be picked up quite cheaply. Good news for West Swindon residents who need to have the use of a car, but don’t want the expense of vehicle tax, insurance, servicing, fuel and MOT. Swindon car club now has a vehicle based at Welton Road in Westlea, near Delta Tennis Centre, available for hire by the hour by club members. Co-wheels operate the car club on behalf of Swindon Travel Choices. It costs nothing to become a member of the club, and you will also get £20 driving credit to get you started. There are now nearly 100 drivers making use of the car club scheme in Swindon town centre, where cars can be hired at the railway station, Princes Street and Old Town. Hourly weekday rates are £4.50, plus 21p per mile, but there are discounted rates during the evenings, overnight and at weekends. The hire charge includes EVERYTHING such as comprehensive insurance and fuel.
