Youngsters in the Redhouse Primary School charity committee responded to the appeal for aid boxes in the October Link by holding cake sales during breaks and after school to raise £190. Teachers Maggie Hartridge and Naomi Barry went shopping at Asda Walmart to buy the requested items and the pupils packed the boxes ready for collection. Ben Freeth said, “we all saw the people who were flooded out on TV and wanted to help. We made posters to get everybody to buy cakes.” The committee presented the school’s harvest festival collection in mid-October to Swindon Foodbank which marks its fifth anniversary in November.

Curry cashback raises money for Mayor’s appeal A charity curry night at the Bombay Lounge restaurant on 29 September raised £300 for the Mayor of Swindon’s Pakistan flood appeal. The mayor Rex Barnett said, “I would like to thank all the people who came along to support those in desperate need after the floods, and also Hanif at the Bombay Lounge for holding the charity nights. “He and his staff are doing an excellent job assisting people raising money for different causes.”

Cutbacks comments wanted Swindon Borough Council is calling for feedback on the proposed changes to its services which aim to save over £20 million from April 2011, to be considered by the council’s cabinet on 24 November. West Forum to look at boundary changes, council cuts and community banking

The West Swindon Forum on Monday 9 November, 7pm, in West Swindon Library will consider the implications of the council tax standstill and government cutbacks in public spending and changes in the make-up of Swindon Borough Council. In the debate Freshbrook & Grange Park councillor Michael Bray said the developers just wanted to build more houses without regard to the pressure on the people living in the area, the inadequate road network to cope with hundreds of extra vehicle movements and lack of school places. Coun Steve Wakefield, who represents Westlea, said the development represents a threat to his area. “The water from this site drains to Whitehill brook. Not only will there be a threat of flooding in Grange Park from rain water coming off this field, as experienced in 2007, there will be flooding again in Westlea where the council has already spent a lot money in protecting homes and the Link Centre.” Coun Nick Martin said the proposal represented a wedge to prise open the door to development of 2,000 houses south of Lydiard Park to join Swindon to Hook, and also 800 houses north of Peatmoor at Ridgeway Farm - both areas outside Swindon in Wiltshire Council. For the developers, Alistair McDonald of DPDS Consulting argued

have not yet been started. “This site has never been part of any agreed plan for Swindon and the developer is in complete denial of the potential flood risks, the inadequate access on Hook Street and the impact on Lydiard Park which is a jewel in Swindon’s crown. “This is a test of government policy to encourage localism. Local MPs, local councillors and local people object to this development. If local decision making is to mean anything, this proposal must not be allowed to go ahead.” The committee endorsed the officers’ recommendation and turned down the Primegate plan. Mechanics’ Institution gets emergency attention

After standing ever more derelict for several years, Swindon Council finally took action by taking possession of the historic Mechanics’ Institution in the town centre to make it weather tight to protect against further deterioration

However, repair work to the roof revealed severe weakness and it had to be removed in September and October. The total cost to make the Grade II* listed building safe will be over £1 million, partly funded by an English Heritage grant, with Swindon Borough Council looking to recover the remainder from the current owner Matthew Singh. “It’s been a very busy few weeks, and the works that are currently going on are shining a bright light on the issue of the Institution, which we’re viewing as an opportunity rather than a problem,” said Daniel Rose, chair of the New Mechanics’ Institution Preservation Trust (NMIPT). “Since the late 1980s three different private speculative owners of the building have each submitted plans for its redevelopment, but not one of them has been able to obtain listed building consent for their proposals. The trust is the only organisation that has secured listed building consent for plans submitted a number of years ago.” The Trust - formed in 1995 - wants to see the 150 year old building come back into community ownership, and is calling on the council to help resolve the ownership situation. Former councillor and chair of the planning committee, Lisa Hawkes, now a New Mechanics’ Trustee, said, “Swindon Borough Council can compulsorily purchase the building and transfer it to a Development Trust (which the NMIPT is), through the Asset Transfer Scheme for very little or even no cost to the local taxpayer. “It is criminal that the NMIPT trustees have been repeatedly and

continually shut out of discussions with the council and other ‘interested’ parties.” Daniel Rose reinforced the position that the trust has held for many years. “We want the building to be restored to its former function, as a facility for the good of the community, but with a modern twist. “Our plans include a theatre, independent cinema, units for independent retailers and a conference and events venue. We want it to be self-sustaining, without losing or compromising its historic significance.” Against a back drop of public commentary - some critical of the trust’s long held position - Daniel is very clear that this is a time to build a constructive relationship with English Heritage and Swindon Borough Council, with hopes of closer involvement by the National Trust. “There’s been a lot of misinformation floating around - particularly online - but the fact is that the trust has been absolutely right in its interpretation of the planning system. We have done everything we can to safeguard the Mechanics’ Institution’s importance as a landmark building in Swindon. “We’re now reaching a real crunch period and it’s vital that everyone concerned about Swindon’s heritage and the Mechanics’ Institution pulls together and doesn’t give up on it. We’ve got to stand firm and not just settle for anything because the building is seen to be in a bad way. “The trust welcomes people who care about what happens to this icon of Swindon.” www.new-mechanics.com

CAB urges people to seek help to keep warm this winter

Several million households in Britain could struggle to keep warm, and the Citizens Advice Bureau is keen that people are aware of the help that they can get as the weather gets colder.

The way that a household is usually defined as being in fuel poverty is if more than 10 percent of the household income needs to be spent on fuel to make the home warm enough to live in - usually 21 degrees for the main living area, and 18 degrees for other occupied rooms. Living in cold homes can damage people’s health and affect their quality of life - particularly the elderly, children, and those with a disability or long-term illness. Fuel poverty is often caused by poor energy efficiency in the home, high energy prices and low household income. The Citizens Advice Bureau in Swindon has put together a pack of information, specifically aimed at helping people to get the support and advice that can be useful as the winter approaches. This contains useful tips about how to • choose the best energy deal – either with your existing fuel supplier, or by considering changing suppliers. • see if you might qualify for a ‘social tariff’ – cheaper prices for vulnerable customers or those on a low income.

Headteacher Helen Swanson said, “this is the first time we have hosted young children in families, and it’s quite a responsibility, but some very close friendships are being made.” The mayor Rex Barnett, reflecting on John Amos Comenius, the Czech educationalist after whom the British Council funded school partnership initiative is named, said, “it’s amazing that a chap who was born in the 1500s dreamt up a scheme of world education that’s still in use today.”

“It’s never too early to start learning about other cultures,” said Robert Buckland. “Ignorance is a major barrier, but good things flow from knowledge and understanding.” The visitors, including 16 children, made visits to London, and took in the delights of Swindon, including Steam Museum. “We’re also going to be visiting the Mayor’s Parlour and Drove Primary School, so our guests can understand more about multi-cultural schools,” said Helen. “We’re very grateful to the Drove Centre for lending us their school bus for the Comenius visit.” Amicita the dove’s visit to Swindon was short however, as she was soon loaded up with British gifts for Tregoze’s Italian partners, whom teachers and pupils were off to visit in October.

This year the football club is helping to raise the £985,000 needed to build and fit out a purpose built Hop Skip & Jump centre in Lydiard Park. It will offer flexible, immediate and sustained day care for children, and support for their families. During his visit, Jonathan played football with the children and launched orange Hop Skip & Jump Swindon wristbands which the club will sell at matches for £2 each. Lynne Godwin , Hop Skip & Jump development manager, said, “we are delighted to have the support of Swindon Town in our efforts to raise funds for a new centre. Jonathan’s visit was a great success; the children loved meeting him.” “Hop Skip and Jump has been working with children with special needs and their families to provide

care and respite since 1981. Both our Cheltenham and Bristol centres are extremely popular; we have people travelling to them from all over the country which is why we are now raising money to build a new centre. “I hope club supporters will purchase Hop Skip and Jump wristbands to help us reach our target.” The fund currently stands at £147,000. North children’s centre open for service in Abbey Meads

Butterflies Children’s Centre, which will move to a brand new facility at Abbey Meads Community Primary school next spring, has opened a satellite building at the other end of Elstree Way in Abbey Meads, next to Catherine Wayte Primary School. Butterflies is the fourteenth centre of its kind to open in Swindon, offering a one-stop shop providing advice, support, learning and play activities for parents and carers with children aged 5 and under. Swimming instructor Carol Affleck said class members were happy to take part in the annual Tommy’s Splashathon and the toddlers and babies had a great time being guided by parents across the pool. Another great engineer and also civic leader in Swindon

Local historian Steve Wakefield continues his story of the Great Western Railway, which celebrates its 175th anniversary this year I often find myself at Christchurch graveyard in Old Town, reflecting on the life of George Jackson Churchward CBE, Freeman of the Borough, and first Mayor of Swindon. His achievements and his legacy mark him out amongst his equals as a great engineer and railwayman. Climbing the ranks to become the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Great Western Railway, was an accolade he deserved. Churchward could be a charmer, yet was known to be outspoken and rascally with it. This attribute ensured that the workers admired him, though he was revered or feared by other engineers and their respective railway company boards. He was the man who broke with GWR tradition and put outside cylinders on its locos, a change that rocked the GWR traditionalists to the core. He brought about standardisation, so that different locomotives used common parts, and he also experimented with boilers and fireboxes.

Churchward was 45 years old when he succeeded William Dean as chief mechanical engineer, after being assistant for some years before Dean’s retirement, ensuring that the GWR was performing effectively. Without doubt he was the most progressive railway engineer of his day. Born in 1857, being the son of a country squire in Devon did not stop Churchward from becoming an engineer and he began his

career on the railways in his home county at the age of 15 years. He was talent spotted at the age of 19 and transferred to the design office at the Swindon works. To many both inside and outside the works he was known unequivocally as the Squire, dressing in the style of a country gent. He enjoyed fishing, shooting and other country pursuits, and was rarely seen without his beloved pipe.

He never married, was always even-tempered with an independent mind and spirit, and was never afraid to speak out. He was sharp in wit as well as advice. He once said to some men who were teasing him about his bachelor status, ‘A lot of you are big men - important men, doing big jobs, where what you say goes, but what are you when you get home? Worms, bloody worms.’ Being logical and self-effacing, he did not mind the jokes that people made about him. At his

Not one to be put off by GWR doyens, Churchward cut up the rulebook and went back to the drawing board. A man at home whether on the workshop floor, drawing office or in the boardroom, he could handle it all. He had vision and a personality and wanted similar enthusiasm and passion from those working around him, not academic argument. Not long after Dean’s retirement Churchward made his mark on the railway world in a very individual way. He is the man that built the first mechanical object in the world to break through the 100mph barrier. Churchward had designed an innovative narrow firebox and boiler, which maintained efficient

retirement someone said, ‘May each hair on his head be a candle to light him to glory.’ Churchward laughed, as he was as bald as a cue ball. A man of simple tastes he was presented with a fishing rod as a retirement gift. By a quirk of fate on 19 December 1933 he was tragically killed in Swindon on a cold foggy morning by an express train, as he crossed the railway line into the works from his home ‘Newburn’ in the railway village. Churchward was aged 77 at the time and it is believed he did not hear the train racing towards him. Swindon came to a standstill as thousands lined the streets to pay their respects as his funeral cortege passed.

Historic newsreels bring back memories of cinema outings

There was delight and appreciation at an evening of old newsreel films made by British Pathe between 1897 and 1970, organised by Swindon Link in association with Swindon Library on 14 October. Mark Harris, head of online marketing at British Pathe, was invited by The Link to present archive news clips featuring Swindon which are amongst the 90,000 short news reports now available to view online free of charge. There was intrigue to see soldiers’ sports on Empire Day in 1918 and the huge crowds for the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1924. Archery enthusiast turns hobby into thriving business

Andrew Smith from Black Cat Archery has transformed his passion for the sport into a new business venture and he wants to capture Swindon’s imagination. The 47 year old former software target archery and woodland specialist from West Swindon gave shooting. Janet Garrett was delighted that the rain cleared for her Puppy Skool open day in aid of CLIMB on 3 October, and was thrilled to raise £600 to support children living with metabolic diseases. Janet has been involved with fundraising for CLIMB since her grandson Jamie died in 2004. She said, “despite the dire weather warnings Jamie worked his magic and sent us sunshine at 1pm when the doors opened.” The open day saw its usual class competitions, with a high standard of doggy behaviour that made the judges’ decisions quite difficult. The lunch time gardening club produced almost 3 kilos of the variety, which they grew from the seed potatoes provided in the competition growing kit. “Taking part in the project was the first opportunity many pupils have had to grow something themselves,” said headteacher Debbie Kalynka. “For four months they were able to learn about what plants need to grow, and have also grown tomatoes, strawberries, beans,

courgettes, carrots and beetroot. The club was thrilled with their potato harvest and is so proud to have won a prize. “The children also enjoyed trying fresh veg like courgettes for the first time. Come and cut down some trees!

What a bad thing to do, you might think. But some trees grow better and last longer if they are regularly cut - and you can have fun doing it. The Peatmoor Community Woodland Group meets every month to manage Peatmoor Copse by the lagoon. The wood is a remnant of the ancient Braydon Forest which was once a royal hunting ground. Nowadays, it’s a secret green oasis within West Swindon. Over the last 22 years ago volunteers have used the old management technique of coppicing to regenerate the hazel, ash, alder, hornbeam and willow. This has encouraged a wide variety of bird, mammal and insect life to return and increased the lifespan of the trees. The group meets on the first Sunday of the month, 10am to 1pm, and newcomers who want to do something for the environment, try something practical outdoors and learn about woodland management are needed. Children are welcome but have to be accompanied by an adult. The October coppicing session was cancelled by heavy rain. So, the first of the winter will take place on Sunday 7 November. Abbey Meads park being destroyed by vandals

After the October Link story about the destruction of the brand new playpark on Shaw Ridge, Abbey Meads resident Jane Burbage, contacted us about the gradual deterioration of the play equipment on the hill below Warrener Close which has sustained increasing amounts of wilful damage and vandalism, including equipment being set alight and white gloss paint being tipped over safety surfaces. Jane Burbage, who regularly visits the park with her grandchildren, said she’s at her wits’ end. “I just find it very sad that there is a minority of people who think it’s fine to live knee deep in litter and dog poo, and who can do so much to spoil things for the majority. I speak to lots of young mums, dog-walkers and other residents, who are all saddened by what is happening to a lovely play facility.” She thinks it is because the area is not directly overlooked by housing and vandals believe they can get away with damage. “By contrast the play areas near the schools at Redhouse are supervised to some degree because people can see what’s happening in them as they walk by. The lesson to be learned is that future parks should not be built in remote places. “What we started with was a very classy landscaped area after enormous groundworks, a pond with

School rebuilding pond to study

Brook Field Primary School in Shaw has started an ambitious project to bring a disused pond back to life. With expert advice from Bristol consultancy RPS Planning and Development, the school plans to recreate an environmental classroom. Fundraising for materials is going on at present. Headteacher Melanie Sancto, below, raised £350 by taking part in a parachute jump during the summer. She enjoyed it so much that she’s thinking of taking it up as a hobby.
