A long awaited meeting between Swindon councillors and officers and the trustees of Lower Shaw Farm in mid-October was described as inconclusive in its outcome and the participants agreed to continue discussions about its future after a site meeting.

Are you ready for wheelies or do you need some help? Swindon’s waste wardens, pictured with leader Rod Bluh and deputy Fionula Foley, can assist you recycle more.

In the run up to big bang week, the amount of recyclable material collected has doubled since 23 July when everybody went onto a weekly recycling collection system.

Whilst the majority of people are willing and eager to recycle and reduce what goes into landfill, some will need help to reduce their bin waste for the fortnightly wheelie collection. Swindon Council has taken on a team of waste wardens who are happy to get stuck in and have a rummage through your rubbish to check that everything possible is being recycled.

The wardens can meet community groups and make home visits to talk through any difficulties. They will also be keeping an eye on areas of the town where recycling levels are low and speaking to residents to find out what problems they are having with recycling.

The team has been busy helping deliver bins to 65,000 homes ready for the roll out of the scheme. Properties not suitable for wheelies should have been notified by post. They will still be expected to reduce waste and each household will be limited to two special blue bags a week, to be collected along with recycling.

Putting arts on the North Swindon map

The Flux action research arts project is charting its work on a giant version of the North Swindon map produced by The Link to give a clear picture of the impact they are having in the area.

So far, Flux events have taken place at the North Swindon Centre, Haydon Wick, and most of the local primary schools. The project, funded by a £1m grant from the Government’s Invest to Save budget, is based at Isambard Community School where much of their work is focussed.

Flux is delivering the entire arts curriculum at Isambard, by commissioning arts educators to teach modules. In the first term, professional singer Liz Terry worked with pupils on a project called Amerisong, North American history through song. The work culminated

in an end of term performance by the whole school in October.

Isambard pupils can choose from extra-curricular arts activities, also run by Flux, which include choir, rock school and drawing.

The project regularly takes to the road to visit other local schools and communities in its Fluxmobile, a film and recording studio fitted into a converted American Airstream bus.

An additive used in anything from diet drinks to children’s medicine has been linked with worrying side effects and Professor Erik Millstone will give a talk in November to set out the latest research.

An open day at Shaw Forest Country Park on 23 September gave people the chance to discover the significant work carried out over the last three years since the site off Mead Way was threatened with commercial development in 2004.

Huge amounts of landscaping work has been completed in the last year, thousands more trees have been planted and a network of footpaths has recently been finished. A large grass events area is ready for use and also a car park.

Shaw and Nine Elms councillor Nick Martin, who in 2004 said he would lie down in front of bulldozers if the council sold the site for a football stadium, commented, “In 1994 I was one of the Thamesdown councillors who voted to turn the former landfill site into a forest park.

“Today I am delighted with the hills, fields and woodlands that have been created at Shaw Forest.

It is a remarkable achievement and I’m proud that residents can enjoy such a large green space barely two miles from the town centre; our children will inherit such a valuable natural resource.”

During the winter, more trees will be planted and the prominent mounds of earth shaped into the land to represent Gaia, the Greek

God of the earth, will be grass seeded.

The entrance road from Mead Way into the park will be upgraded and better signage and more bench-

es will be installed next Spring to complete Phase I and II. Work on converting the third phase, until recently a landfill site, should start next year.

Cricklade Country Way loses out in Big Lottery Hopes of a wildlife and leisure corridor linking Mouldon Hill in North Swindon to Cricklade were dashed on 18 October when the project failed to make the final cut in the Big Lottery Living Landmarks programme.

Twenty three projects from the UK were bidding for awards of between £10m and £25m. In October six made it to the final shortlist but Cricklade Country Way missed out.

“The team is absolutely gutted,” said project manager Ken Oliver. “We thought we stood a good chance of getting it. The Cricklade Country Way is still on the cards. We will be looking for alternative funding but we won’t be able to deliver the project as quickly.” www.crickladecountryway.org.uk

The current Swindon Borough Council consultation on school transport infers that buses have only been provided to Bradon Forest because ‘historically there has been a lack of secondary school places in the area’.

This is misleading.

Since 1962 Bradon Forest has been a popular school choice for the western side of Swindon.

As the area developed, ‘West Swindon’ was served by Bradon Forest, Ridgeway and, since the mid-80’s Greendown, all being part of the Wiltshire Local Authority.

In 1997 Swindon was created as a ‘unitary authority’ and Bradon Forest’s admissions area was split between the two local authorities.

Bradon Forest has always had a close relationship with Swindon. All of Bradon Forest’s admissions were dealt with by Swindon until the new national system came in 2005.

Swindon Council had approached the Bradon Forest governing body in 2001 to bring the school into the Swindon Authority but national government regulations would not allow this. Swindon also approached the Department of Education to see if the results of Swindon children at Bradon Forest could be utilised

by Swindon Local Authority in their league tables.

However, in the last two years the approach of the Education Department in Swindon has unfortunately

Staff identified the need for dedicated areas where they could work with the increasing number of children with complex needs: from learning and behavioural difficulties to low self-esteem or problems making friends.

The brightly coloured Rainbow Room is a place for children to work one to one with an adult or in small groups. At other times, whole classes can use the room for a story or for circle time.

The quiet chill out room, decorated in soothing blues and soft furnishing, is a place to calm children who are upset or angry. It is also a

Emergency visit to playgroup

Youngsters at Upper Shaw Farm Playgroup were able to find out more about the the emergency services when paramedic parent Paul Vincent visited them in his ambulance as part of a health project.

Paul showed groups round the vehicle and demonstrated how some of the equipment works to help the children understand what might happen in an emergency.

The children entered into the spirit of the visit by dressing up as doctors, nurses and accident victims.

A new group is being formed for parents keen on cutting the cost of keeping babies clean and happy in cloth nappies whilst reducing the impact of disposables on the environment.

Some 8 million disposables are dumped daily, filling landfill, and releasing methane gas into the atmosphere over many years. Using washable cloth nappies can cost £500 less than buying disposables.

Movie buffs will have to wait to ‘08 for next film fest

November’s Swindon Film Festival has been cancelled but two events planned for the opening weekend will go ahead as part of the Swindon Imaging Festival.

Revel in the re-mastered version of The Wizard of Oz on 18 November,10.30am at the Wyvern Theatre. The original technicolour print has been restored so that the colour bursts from the screen.

Matthey Older, of award-winning electronic music pioneers I Am The Mighty Jungulator, will present a brand new piece of work, created by people of Swindon and a Jungulator. His unique audio visual experience is a sensory treat, blending electronic textures and a tapestry of visuals. This can be seen on 17 November, 8pm at the Wyvern.

Natural inspiration to do good things in your community

There are some truly amazing sights on the BBC series The Nature Of Britain presented by Alan Titchmarsh which started in October.

Every week local projects involving volunteers are featured at the end of the programme. On 24 October, Swindon appeared in a short film with the Wilts and Berks Canal and the RSPB bird sanctuary at the Thames Water Barnfield Road sewage treatment works receiving attention.

But there are dozens of other opportunities to participate in improving the environment in and around the town, open to all ages and interests.

Two good places to find out how to contribute your time and interest is the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, call Neil Pullen at the trust office on 526228 or mail: neilp@wiltshirewildlife.org or call the Swindon Council Ranger Service at Coate Water on 490150.

Take a break from the coming hype with free craft workshops organised by members of Freshbrook Evangelical Church.

Meetings for volunteers to help prepare and run the project take place on Thursday 15 November, 8pm and Wednesday 21 November, 8pm.

GOSH it’s going to be a hot walk

Trekking through the Namibian desert is the latest challenge for Nicki Styles, who has become a veteran fundraiser for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

She will be walking six hours a day across the scorching desert next May to raise money for the hospital where her son Brandon has been treated for a metabolic illness since he was a baby.

She will be joined by friends met on previous treks along the Great Wall of China and the Inca Trail.

Two of her fellow trekkers came from the New Forest to help with a bag pack at Asda in September which raised £374.

Nicki will be packing bags again on 1 December and would welcome any volunteers who could spare a few hours to help.

She is hoping to smash her fundraising target of £3,000 and would love to hear from local businesses who can sponsor her and would like to see their logo or product in the desert.

Preparing to see the Pope

Four young members of the congregation at St Peter’s Church in West Swindon are preparing to attend a massive youth rally in Australia next year.

World Youth Day is an invitation by the Pope for young people from across the world to get together and celebrate the Catholic faith. In July 2008 up to 500,000 people are expected to make their way to Sydney.

Pope John Paul II was inspired by great gatherings of the world’s youth for Palm Sunday events in Rome.
