Swindon's worth looking at - together

Things are changing in Swindon - fast - as it has done for over one hundred and sixty years. A grand plan for the town centre has been drawn up (see page 4), the next stage of the Northern Development is about to take off (page 5) and Asda Wal-Mart is going to change the face of shopping in Swindon (see page 44/ 45). Praised as an economic powerhouse, more usually criticised for what it lacks, and more recently the butt of jokes for aspiring to be a city, Swindon has a lot going for it. Plans for Swindon's continued expansion on the land between the town and the M4 will be put to the council's cabinet on 3 November and the full council meeting on 23 November.

Once accepted the modifications to Local Structure Plan 2011 will permit development, including the proposals for a new football stadium associated with hotel, casino, cinema complex and snow dome.

The Front Garden Action Group says a sports and entertainment complex near junction 16 is acceptable but it objects to proposals for 3,000 houses on the land. Environment campaigners say that brown field sites within Swindon should be used, and high quality appartment housing should be developed to create higher density urban areas.

The plan covering the area to the north of the Thamesdown Drive extension between Abbey Meads (Lady Lane) and Taw Hill (Purton Road) has been put forward by the North Swindon Development Company as a requirement of the outline planning permission granted by Swindon Borough Council in June 2000.

The Urban Core area

The Redhouse and Oakhurst Framework Plan develops and interprets the Master Plan, provides detailed design briefs for development areas and offers guidance on residential and commercial development, housing densi ty, highway matters, noise reduction measures, conservation of flora and fauna and open space requirements.

The proposal is one of three Framework Plans covering the 5,500 homes Haydon 3 development area. Unlike other housing areas in Swindon, Haydon 3 will be less suburban and will have more sharply defined planning characteristics.

There will be an urban core with higher density town-like three storey buildings fronting onto streets and squares. A formal area will include streets more akin to boulevards and avenues.

The third part will have a more rural look as it lies close to the extensive site boundary, adjacent to open countryside. Within this area is a major site of special scien-

Staff at the Haydon Centre have set up a new initiative to help find a playing companion for sports people of any age and interest.

Partners to Play covers all sports offered at the centre, from snooker and aerobics to short mat bowls and line dancing.

To join, participants need to fill in an application form, giving details about their age, sex and the activities that interest them. Staff will then try to find a sports match.

As an incentive the first time the scheme is used the activity is free.

Vandals cause concern A spate of vandalism and theft at Haydonleigh School has left children frustrated and teachers angry with counting the cost of damaged equipment and repeatedly clearing up the mess.

Since the summer holidays the rear playground, next to the Safeway Supermarket, has been a particular target. The shed door has been prized open twice and equipment has been stolen or broken. The gate that was only installed in July, with the help of The Link and Kudos Fencing, has been ripped off its hinges. Roof tiles are repeatedly broken and beer bottles are smashed in the car park and reception area.

Over £1,000 of school funds will be needed to pay for the repairs.

Deputy headteacher Lisa Hawkins, said, "it's heartbreaking for the children and parents who have done so much fundraising. The action of this minority is thoughtless and dangerous. Instead of buying extra equipment our money will be spent replacing it."

Police believe local teenagers are responsible and are calling upon people using the footpaths near the school to be vigilant and report anything suspicious. Security at the school is being stepped up.

Poet to open school The official opening of Catherine Wayte Primary School on Elstree Way will take place on Wednesday 8 November, when children will celebrate with a day of fun, learning and performance of wild words in poetic form.

Children's poet Kit Wright will spend all day at the school, holding workshops, reading his poetry and listening to work written by the children.

There will be a poetry competition and at the end of the day each pupil will get a signed copy of one of Kit's books to keep as a momento of being one of the first to attend the new school.

Joining the staff and children at the opening will be all those who have contributed to the school, including governors, the education department officers and those who have donated money and equipment.

The fun continues on Friday 10 November when everybody will dress up as their favourite book character.

Classic fiction and certain non-fiction may also be shelved in the store. So if you can not find what you want on the shelves it is always worth asking at the enquiry desk.

Ridgeway Pre-School

Drop in for education advice A brand new initiative by Swindon Council's education department is being piloted in West Swindon to offer advice and support on a range of school issues starting on Friday 3 November, Education Welfare Officers Irene Stollery and Ian Prestwich are holding a monthly drop-in advice point at the West Swindon Family and Community Project, 15 Gainsborough Way, Freshbrook. They have responsibility for Ridgeway and Greendown respectively, and all the primary schools in West Swindon between them.

Anyone with education related queries is welcome to meet them, no appointment is needed. Questions are expected to include attendance issues, bullying, uniform grants, exclusions, special needs, child employment, school transport, transfers and admissions. If the pilot scheme is successful it is hoped it can be repeated in other areas, including North Swindon.

Ian explained, "our aim is to provide a direct and easily accessible link between the community and the Education Department.

We recognise how difficult it can sometimes be to get the right information from the right person, particularly over the telephone. If we do not know the answer, then we know someone who does."

Strange shapes in the landscape English Heritage archaeologist David Field talks on 'Harmony, henges, hillforts and druids: aspects of sacred space in the Wessex Landscape,' on Wednesday 22 November, 7pm, at the National Monuments Record Centre, Churchward (near the Designer Village).

Until 7 January the centre has a fascinating exhibition about the prehistoric monuments to be found within a few miles of Swindon. It illustrates the lives of the people who built, inhabited and used those monuments over 2,000 years ago.

Early Christmas present for Swindon producers Swindon music group Stage Struck goes into its winter show under new

management with Geoff and Jane Marsh from Grange Park taking over from long serving producer David Wainwright, who is retiring as the group's head.

The two evening perform-

ances for A Little Christmas, which features a festive collection of songs and

comedy, and a special Stage Struck musical version of Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol, at the Arts Centre on 17

Another rise in GCSE results Best ever in school's history Over the last five years, Greendown has consistently raised performance at GCSE - in line with, but usually above the national average for all English schools. This year, with 54.59% of our students gaining five or more A-C grades, we mark two firsts. Not only is this a bigger increase than any other year in the school's history, but it marks a 10% rise in these grades over five years. The number of students gaining at least 1 A-C grade has also increased by 12% over the same period Teachers spend a lot of time at Greendown seeking to `maximise the individual potential' of students - and it clearly pays off! With careful

target setting, regular testing and encouragement in our Personal Development Programmes run by the tutor, many students have significantly increased results from early predicted grades.

This year, too, provided a surprise. Bucking a national trend, our boys got nearly 58% A-C grades - outperforming the girls by some 7%. This is doubly pleasing, because improving boys' performance in public examinations has been a major school focus since before our successful Ofsted inspection two years ago.

Though the 5 A-C grades at GCSE are generally considered the unofficial benchmark of a school's success, the results in schools can go up or down depending on the basic abilities of the year group when they enter the school. We are particularly proud, therefore, that year on year, we have so far managed to increase pupil exam success. This success clearly sets our students on course for future careers and qualifications.

Early entry brings out Maths ability Greendown has a successful programme of entering high flying students for their Maths GCSE a year early. Twenty five achieved grades A and B this year and are now persuing an A level course.

Graduates starting to make an impact on the world Three former Greendown students - all of whom did very well at GCSE - have gone on to make significant starts to their careers.

Lucy Proctor left, who completed GCSE Art early and in a year, gained one of the five highest marks nationally in Philosophy A level this summer.

In July Lucy, who together with two other former students, spent two weeks of their holidays working with some of our new pupils in the literacy school, is reading English at Manchester University.

She has already contributed an article to the university newspaper and is considering a career in journalism.

Lucy was delighted with the A level result, but denied that her skill in philosophy had anything to do with the practice she got in

Polly Benford, below, another of Greendown's super artists, who also gained ten grade As at GCSE, recently took the initiative with another Swindon student in September, to hold an exhibition of her work in Old Town. She is continuing studies in fine art at Goldsmith's College, London.

Open evenings a hit amongst parents and year 6 pupils

Each year, Greendown offers West Swindon parents opportunities to visit and find out about our approaches to learning and teaching.

In October, with four evening and morning open sessions, we played host to our largest number of visitors ever. Some 670 people discovered in 'active' sessions, how our students learn every subject.

A session run by senior staff on how we help children make the most of what the school has to offer was packed each night.

For all those children who choose Greendown, visits to meet and get to know them will be made by senior staff next Spring. They will then take part in a three day induction into the school in July 2001.

Greendown brought to Secretary of State's attention Secretary of State for Education David Blunkett must be getting used to Greendown being mentioned in his presence. Social Science students on a visit to the Houses of Parliament in the Spring were lucky to meet him in the central lobby and he stopped to talk to them.

Then assistant headteacher Tim Noble met Mr Blunkett at a reception for teachers in Buckingham Palace in July (sec Shakespeare story overleaf).

During the August summer holidays, student Rosa Hirsch-Holland was blunt with Blunkett when she took up the opportunity to call him on a radio 'phone-in. She gave her forthright views on the burden of GCSE course work that students now face.

Languages boosted by Euro contacts Year 9 students have now made two visits to the British Airways Learning Centre where they act as stewards and passengers speaking Spanish so that BA can test their own personnel while dealing with foreign language speakers. This invaluable practice in a real world context is further enhanced by our regular visits abroad.

This year a Spanish exchange scheme took place, with students from Spain visiting and experiencing learning at Greendown.

One of the hits with visiting students were the lessons on `active' Shakespeare which they took back with them to Spain and set their own school ` buzzing with the bard'.

A French activity trip to the Alps by

year 8 and 9 was particularly successful with white water rafting, mountain biking and plenty of water sports.

With projects during the day in a French-speaking environment, it was a welcome boost to learning a foreign language.

A joint Humanities and English department trip to Italy this year was also ve ry successful. Forty year 8, 9 and 10 students visited Verona to see Juliet's balcony, Rome, to be blessed by the Pope, Florence to see the sites and Pompeii where they visited the city destroyed by volcanic eruption.

The enriching experience gained on these trips will continue to be a major part of Greendown's extra-curSchool trips to France can be quite an experience ricular work.

Meningitis charity weekend Greendown prides itself on its service to others. Charities are regula ry supported through our end of term non-uniform days. But sometimes a special event is mounted. On the weekend of the 30th September, 48 students, two teachers and two volunteers, took part in a 24hour sporting challenge which raised £2,000 for the National Meningitis Trust.

All the students competed against each other in teams and tournaments, including badminton and volley ball, penalty shoot outs and the ` bleep' test.

Prizes were donated by parents and local shops and our catering company, Fairfield, supplied food for the event.

Thanks to teachers Mrs Helen Barnes and Mr Chris Dobbs for organising the marathon and to all supporters and sponsors. The school intends to make this an annual event.

Summer school boosts reading and writing Twenty five youngsters who joined Greendown in September this year spent the last two weeks of their summer holiday getting extra help and support with their literacy as preparation for secondary school. With visits from outside speakers who talked about the importance of communication in their working lives, as well as trips to the Cotswold Wild Life Park and Swindon Art Galle ry , it was a challenging and stimulating start to the school year for them.

Triumph for performers in Shakespeare Festival Supported by some 3,000 parents and visitors who paid to watch them, nearly 1,200 students from twenty different primary and secondary schools and two FE colleges performed a world first here at Greendown in May this year when they acted out thirty minute versions of 35 of Shakespeare's plays. Three hundred Greendown students performed seven of the plays.

With grants from the Millennium Lottery Awards, Swindon LEA, Swindon Community Arts Foundation, Education Extra and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, the students did two performances each of their selected play which had been adapted by the teachers themselves with help from nationally-famous Shakespeare teachers, Chris Geelan and Sarah Gordon of the Young Shakespeare Company.

The brain child of Assistant Headteacher Tim Noble, it followed the successful work on Shakespeare done with partner primary schools over three years and led to an invitation from Buckingham Palace for Tim to meet the Queen as part of the raising achievement in schools awards.

Next year, Greendown will be hosting a play writing festival, celebrating the history of Swindon. We have already received £2,000 from Swindon Community Arts Foundation in support of this venture and will once again be looking to business to help us with an exciting educational initiative.

Stretching students across a range of sports Since opening fifteen years ago, and using its outstanding facilities and dedicated staff, Greendown has developed significant sporting strengths in its teams and games events. Many Greendown students go on to achieve great things on playing fields beyond the school.

Sam Dell won a local gymnastics competition. Zoe Mead is a member of the Wiltshire Hockey Squad and participated in the Millennium Youth Games, which took place at Greendown. Laura Worley is an all-round athlete who took part in Swindon Schools' Cross Country and runs and swims for Wiltshire while Martin Hall, also a star athlete, broke the Wiltshire 800 metre record and was Wiltshire Champion for his age group. Matthew Bennett was all round sportsman of the year at Greendown and Michelle Myers is a county hockey player. Junior leaders take initiative The past year has seen the launch of the Junior Sports Leadership Award (JSLA) in years 10 and 11. The certificate received at the end of the course is recognised by prospective employers, keen to take on students who can work as a team, show initiative and have the key skills of planning, organising and leading.

In year 11, some 60 students have reached the final stages of their assessment. To pass the course they must teach a group of fifteen primary school pupils in a sport of their choice. Women Out West closes Hazel Kenee has announced that, after over 10 years, the group has had to close due to lack of funding to support a creche.

She said the group had been very successful in bringing women together and promoting friendship in West Swindon. "We would like to thank all members for their help and support over the last six months in fundraising to help keep the group running until now."

"The issues are many and varied," said Dominic. "It can be personal problems, relationships with other students or teachers, bullying and coping with the demands of secondary school. Some have low self-esteem or lack of confidence, others need help to manage anger.

"The students are often non-committal in their attitude, but I believe it's a positive experience for many as they are willing to come back to see me."

Students visit him on a voluntary basis, but must have staff permission to miss a lesson. Dominic has a close liaison with teachers,

year group heads and education welfare officers, and is invited to sit in on meetings when parents are asked to visit the school to discuss their child's behaviour.

Headteacher Andrew Fleet is enthusiastic aboutDominic's presence in the school. "It's great to have him providing support for the staff; Dominic is a tremendous resource. The time he can give to listen to students on a personal basis to help them resolve difficulties is invaluable."

Understanding loss The West Swindon Ecumenical Partnership holds a weekly coffee morning for anybody who has experienced loss and bereavement, at Toothill Church on Thursdays, 10am to 11.30am.

Church members who understand the grief being felt are on hand to listen and chat and give support.

A team of people are also available to spend more time on a one to one basis with those who would like to talk in more depth.

Festival goers help emergency services Thanks to the generosity of the 30,000 people at the Wiltshire Festival in August, over £ 3,500 was raised for the Fire Services Benevolent Fund and the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Firefighters from both watches at Westlea fire station attended the shows on both days, and collected for the benevolent fund at the Classical Extravaganza on Friday 25 August. Over £3,000 was raised from the collecting tins and the sale of yellow firemen's hats, over twice the amount compared with last year.

The success of this year's festival has set the scene for 2001.

The organisers are talking to some very big names, but will not reveal who. Andy Cotton said, "there are some very well known performers in our sights for the Classical and the Party. The Wiltshire Festival was the seventh biggest event in Britain this year; we're now getting agents ringing us up.

"We were very pleased at how things went in August and we think the majority of people enjoyed the shows. Next year will be even better."
