TOOTHILL youth club building and live music Bonfire is on from Sounds'.

Toothill Neighbourhood Worker Lucie Hartley appealed forheip in getting Toothill's traditional community bonfire organised last month. As she writes below it's going to be more spectacular than ever.

The Toothill bonfire Event is all set to be an exciting night on Friday 3 November.

It begins at 630p.m. at Toothill Farm, Bodiam Drive. As well as the bonfire which this year will be a burning Viking Ship and fireworks, there will be refreshments and a bar.

More crawlers wanted Toothill Creepy Crawlers is looking for new members to join them.

The parent and toddler group meets in Toothill Farm at 2p.m. on Tuesdays and has quite a number of babies and one year olds.

As they get older, activities are being introduced to interest them.

Although one of the group has had a baby every month since June and more are expected over the next few months, they are interested in meeting other parents with under threes who would like to join.

FRESHBROOK & GRANGE PARK Windmill sets out to be a community pub for the family

After a six week shutdown Thamesdown's deputy mayor Jim Cordon re-christened Freshbrook's re-named and re-furbished pub by cutting a ribbon and pulling the first pint on 10 October.

The Windmill has been re-designed to attract families and to encourage the Freshbrook community to see the pub as its 'local.' Coun. Cordon congratulated Whitbread Severn Inn for catering for the family by providing a comfortable room where children can be with their parents.

Nearly all the reactions towards The Windmill on the opening night were very positive. Barmaid Donna Barlow from Bloomsbury Close said the pub was fantastic and had a great atmosphere.

John McGookin of Fleetwood Court said The Windmill was 100% better than it was. "It's brighter and more homely."

Pamela Melanophy, from Wentworth Park, winner of the competition run by the brewers in The Link, said the pub's design was marvellous. "It's definitely an improvement."

Shirley Day from Shaw was very impressed. "It's a lot nicer than it was. We'll be alternating between The Village Inn at Shaw Centre and The Windmill."

Michael Sefton of Grange Park said he was glad to see The Windmill. "Perhaps it's too good for

Opera comes to school Recently the Opera '80 Company made their second visit to Freshbrook Primary School. Four classes of older children studied the Opera 'Lucia Di Lammermoor' by Donizetti, and learnt some of the verses designed for choral singing.

The Company were at the school for two days and during that time ran workshop sessions for the children. This culminated in a demonstration session for parents on the last day which proved to be both entertaining and informative. Have you grown up in the last five years? The people in five year old Westlea Church are celebrating what God has done in that time. Not that he's finished yet....

There's Dave. He says God started Westlea Church just for him. He heard Billy Graham's Bristol meeting on the radio in May '84 and spent the summer thinking over what he had heard.

By September he had made his decision and was looking for a church. He came to the first service at Westlea. Now he's leading a home Bible Study Group.

There's Jo. (He went to Zaire see the September Link). He became a Christian when he saw

Carolyn (Jo's wife) drew a picture while she had chicken pox (she and their two girls got spotty while Jo was in Zaire-God doesn't always make it easy for us! But together we got through). She showed us part of it - a dark, bleak landscape. She says that's what she was like when they moved to Westlea four years ago.

She unfolded the next part of the picture - a hand reaching down.

She says Jesus reached down to her and picked her up. The last part showed sun on the sea, green hills, life and richness. She leads a mum's group.

Mick says he thought he had

his Christian life all sewn up (his father was a minister). But living and worshipping with Christians from lots of different church background has made him value many new things. And he says he's learning to appreciate other people's viewpoints and tolerance. That's good news for us we don't call him 'big Mick' for nothing.

These four were telling their stories at Westlea Church's birthday party service. Roy Pointer from Bible Society challenged us about our future. "Are you a caring, praying, hospitable, suffering church" he asked us. Well - are we? This is how we want to grow up in the next five years.

As part of their continuing policy of reaching out to the young, The Samaritans have teamed up with the Southampton based Video Solent to launch the new Samaritan Video 'A Time to Decide'.

The video is currently available from Vido Solent's three Swindon branches located at the West Swindon District Centre, Cricklade Road, and Park South.

A time to decide provides an interesting insight into The Samaritans, portraying both callers and volunteers. It is primarily aimed at reaching out to potential callers stressing that Gillian Barber, left, finds the it is not only the suicidal who talk to The Samaritans but also a wide Samaritans video amongst the new releases with Video Solent spectrum of people going through Manageress Sandra Kirby a difficult period in their lives.

Residents Association to be consulted about bridge in centre of village

The last meeting of Shaw Residents Association was disappointing on two accounts.

Firstly the poor attendance at which was a potentially interesting meeting. Secondlythe non-appearance without notice of Councillors Free and Midwinter despite agreement to attend. During the course of the meeting it emerged that Cllr Free had another meeting and Cllr Midwinter was unwell. Whilst we appreciate it was not possible for either gentlemen to attend a 'phone call of apology from our elected representatives would have been appreciated.

The residents of Sandacre Road are still battling to achieve relief from the chaotic bus service in their road. The association has agreed to represent them and is arranging a meeting with John Owen from Thamesdown Transport and Cllr Free.

The meeting identified three areas that were suitable for bench seats to provide resting places to and from Shaw Village Centre. It was also felt that they would

enhance the amenities of the area.

The association is to contact the Borough Council on this and several other matters. Approach is also to be made to British Telecom about the provision of telephone boxes in the area.

The next meeting of the association on Monday 6 November at 7.30p.m. is an informal public enquiry requested by Thamesdown Borough Council.

There have been plans for a footbridge across Roughmoor Way joiningthetwo parts of Shaw Lane for a number of years. There are obvious advantages in having a bridge across a busy road such as for children going to school; equally there are disadvantages.

Indeed will it become an expensive white elephant like so many footbridges in the borough?

This bridge has been talked about for years; it is now likely to become a reality. Itis your bridge, your area, I urge you to attend the meeting, see the model, view the plans and talk to the officers.

The present temporary pedestrian crossing has been the source of much complaint because of the constant building works which has taken place closeby and the increasingvolumeoftraffic which has raised the problems of safety.

Council engineers have put the idea of a pelican crossing to Wiltshire County Council, highway

authority. However this as alternative has been rejected.

Thamesdown Council's planners are keen to see a less heavy structure according to Borough Planning Officer Nick Davies.

'We would like to get away from the large, bulky pedestrian bridges you see elsewhere.

'The engineers have come up with a light, airy, modem design.

The tall pylon supporting the bridge will be a landmark, whilst it will get pedestrians, cyclists and people pushing buggies away from the main road which will get busier in the future.'

Seldom does a week go by without some reference in the Media to the demographic trend which will leave this country desperately short of young people to join the work force.

Suddenly, women workers are fashionable and stay-at-home mums are being wooed back to the jobs they pursued before motherhood. Not since the war have women been so apparently welcome in the industrial environment.

There is now much talk about the need for government run nurseries, workplace creches and a sympathetic attitude from employers. For those of us who are already working mums out of necessity or desire (or both) it all sounds like the answer to our prayers. At present, the realities of arranging childcare can be enough to deter the most enthusiastic of women wanting to return to work.

For many women, the only affordable childcare option is Grandma. This can work out fine and to everyone's mutual benefit.

However, it can also be fraught with problems. For alarge number of women in this community it is simply not an option since grandma is probably in Aberdeen or Sheffield or Cardiff and not just round the corner.

The demise of the extended family leaves many women looking to 'outsiders' to care for their children.

Doubt, then guilt However sure one is about the decision to go out to work and however logically that decision is made, it is at the stage of finding a 'carer' that doubts can creep in.

You might as well admit from the start that there are times when you are going to feel guilty or sad (or relieved) about leaving your child with someone else so it is as well to face these emotions from the start and come to terms with them.

The best place to start looking for a carer is often closest to home. Talk to people, let the neighbours know you are looking for someone, tell them at the Parent and Toddler's group and theClinic. Youmaybe lucky and find that the bush telegraph reaches the ideal person. Be cautious, however; don't enter into agreements with the first likely candidate just because you are relieved to have found someone.

Another good first move is to ask your health visitor or Social Services for a list of Registered Childminders.

Idid this and was given quite a lengthy list. It has to be said that some were no longer child minding and others had no vacancies but it is a starting point.

Advertising can bring results Some Childminders advertise themselves. The noticeboards in Martins Newsagents often carry these ads. Be sure to visit more than one and to be specific and business like in your discussions. Thereis no point in having a cosy chat about the wallpaper and forgetting to ask about thechildminder'sviewson discipline, sweets, TV and the like.

Childminders are less expensive than nannies but if finances allow, it is worth considering the advantages

of someone coming to your home.

Don't be put off by the word 'nanny' -none of ours have been remotely like Mary Poppins! There are agencies which will find you a nanny but the placement fee can be quite high and it is worth frying to find one yourself if you are prepared to do the telephoning answering. letter writing, reference chasing and interviewing.

There are various places to advertise. I tried the Evening Advertiser but it was a short advert to keep costs down. This was a mistake since the ad was not very specific and I had many replies from people who were totally unsuitable for one reason or another.

The advertising boards in Martins and at Community Centres are another possibility and you can give quite a lot of specific detail on a postcard. (But don't give your child's name or your address - just a phone number if you can or a Box No).

One of the best places to advertise is herein The Linkmagazine. (More of this later). I also had tremendous help from the Head of my local junior school who advertised for a nanny for me in his school newsletter. I'm sure the local heads would not thank me for recommending this method to everyone which brings me back to the potential usefulness of The Link magazine as an advertising source.

From my own experience of interviewing and finding carers and from talking to other working mums it becomes clear that one of the problems is that everyone's requirements are different. Many women work part time; some don't work schoolholidays; some only need carers in school holidays; some work shifts. What is also clear is that many mums could and would fit in with these various requirements and be child minders /carers if only they were aware of what was wanted. Might The Link be a suitable place to launch a pilot project in which thoserequiring and those offering childcare use the advertising service to give dear and detailed information as to what they need or can provide?

Winter reading

West Swindon Librarian Linda Black describes some of the exhibitions and the new books available at the library

Winter really is with us now, so make the most of the dark evenings with a good book. I've listed some of the more interesting new titles at the end of this article, but if you would like further information on recent publications, the library service is now producing a monthly listing of all new fiction added to the county's stock. Customers are also welcome to ask to see the library's advance on order list and of course the current copy of the 'Bookseller' - there is no excuse not to be in the know!

During November, the library will be accommodating a special exhibition by local Swindon artist Steven Luce. Entitled 'Memento Mori: Pictures of All Souls. The paintings explore a theme on the cycle of life and death based on the Karma principle. Several of the canvases are set within a Swindon context.

The R.S.P.B. will also be providing an interesting display of information this month so look our for this around the library.

On the literary front, local poet David Buchan will be organizing

Homeward bound

By the time The Link is published Beverly and Bill Kambach will be back home in Tucson, Arizona. Before they left, Beverley wrote some impressions down for The Link Instead of 'a day in the life of, I would like to write about the last 18 months that my husband, Bill and I have spent in Swindon.

Since Bill has been with Galileo, we have made many lasting local and international friends. We were so lucky to have been invited up north to Cheadle Hulme for a most memorable Christmas. It was the best we can remember celebrating!

Gateway, in the West Swindon Centre, is quite an experience to behold. Just when I learn the store, items begin finding new places. Too bad there is not a Safeway or a Sainsbury close by to give Gateway (ASDA) some competition. I think a green grocer and a family bakery is greatly needed. Many times I travelled by bus to the Swindon

Drives through the Cotswolds and the many wonderful villages filled some of our weekends. We would pack a picnic and take long walks. Sometimes, we found that we had lost our way; wondering if we should have turned left at the fence post or gone straight over the stile. Other weekends found us in Wales, Scotland, York, and of course, London.

Since I was too frightened to drive here - the roads seemed so narrow and everyone seemed to drive so fast - I used the walking paths and the bus service to get around. On my many strolls the surest way to elicit a smile or greeting was to walk with a friend's baby or dog. Doing the 'two step' became part of my routine as the walks and grassways seem to be one large doggy toilet.

During our time here we have lived in both Shaw and Freshbrook. We preferred our home in Freshbrook because I could garden and grow beautiful flowers and herbs. We also like being near the new Windmill pub

Town Centre just to purchase good bakery goods and fresh vegetables.

The potatoes, carrots, brussel sprouts and cucumbers are delicious herein England. Other favourites of ours proved to be the bacon, trifle and Hob Mobs.

The Link Centre is an excellent facility. A place for children as well as adults to ice skate, swim and exercise. We took advantage of the movie theatre and the library.

We will miss your television stations BBC 1 and 2, Channels 3 and 4. At first we were put off by having to purchase a TV license, but if it keeps you from having to watch hours of advertising and money raising telethons, it is worth it.

Now that it is time to go home we must trade watching the interesting hedgehogs and foxes, cattle and sheep, hills and green grass for the howls of the coyote, the giant saguaro cactus and hot summers. We have many wonderful memories to take back to Tucson Arizona.

Xmas Ice spectacular to glitter at Link rink

An international tennis tournament worth $25,000 in prize money takes place at the Delta Tennis Centre off Great Western Way between 6 and 10 November.

The tournament is one of two Challenger' events for women held in Britain each year. It offers a chance for young professional making their way to the top to win world computer points which gives them access to larger professional tournaments.

Delta Centre Tennis Development Officer Neil Allen said he was delighted that the tournament was being staged in Swindon. "It's a chance for local people to see good quality tennis being played by Lp and coming stars.'

This year's ice gala is set to be something quite spectacular in the history of the Link Centre.

Take the following ingredients, the Hungarian ice dance champions, Kiara Engi and Attiia Toth who are currently ranked fourth in the world, David Reynolds, a local skater contending the 1989 World Professional Championships and over 100 hundred local Swindon skaters.

Then, add the help of a Time Lord, a touch of carnival atmosphere, a handful of New York gangsters, a few Austrian walt'es, some Parisian flavouring and a castle of ice.

Finally, with lavish costumes and glittering scenery, the scene's all set for two hours of surprise, amazement and delight for the whole family. A great evening out is guaranteed.

The performances take place on Monday 18 December, 2p.m. and Tuesday 19 December, 7.30p.m. Tickets are on sale now from Link Centre reception.

Cricket bat tickets selling well A cricket bat signed by last summers Australiantouring team and the England XI will soon go to a lucky winner in the Swindon area.

Six thousand draw tickets were printed by local insurancebrokers Mansfield Begbie Associates, in a bid to raise £1,600 to help two year old Alex Mortimer of Stratton St. Margaret receive specialist treatment for cerebral palsy.

Mansfield Begbie Associates are representatives for Cornhill Insurance, sponsors of test cricket, and Mike Rees, a director for the company living in Sparcells, was able to secure one of only 30 cricket bats in the country. "Most of the tickets are with or have been sold by local cricketers and they can also be bought at the West Swindon branch of the Halifax Building Society.

"The draw takes place on 1 December. The winner of the bat and runner ups who will receive Cornhill test match cricket souvenirs will be announced in January. If you know a cricket club player, ask him if he has any tickets left?"

Link Arts Studio Link Centre After 4 years of operation, Link Centre is now firmly established in Swindon, but as the centre develops it is important that the community has a say in the way it provides a service.

Thamesdown Borough Council, through the Recreation Sub-Committee, is very interested in having your views on the facilities provided, the programme of activities, prices, opening hours, access, cleanliness, advertising and the many, many other topics you, the customers and users, might like to raise.

In a surprise announcement, the developers of the Shaw Ridge Leisure Park have declared that the facilities will welcome the first customers in November 1990.

Building work at the Leisure Park site opposite the Lirilc Centre started in midOctober and an official 'sod-cutting' ceremony is planned for 15 November.

"It's all go," said Michael Oldrieve of Carter Commercial Developments, Bristol.

"We're very pleased to be on site after a long period of bringing together the different companies involved in the scheme, agreeing designs and seeking approvals."

Carter's proposals were first accepted

by Thamesdown Council in August 1988.

The plans were exclusively revealed to residents of West Swindon in The Link and displayed atapublic exhi.bilionin January this year.

The Shaw Ridge Leisure Park, combining a range of facilities on one site, will be one of the first of its kind in Britain. Mr Oldrieve said the scheme would be a model for further integrated leisure developments in other parts of the country.

A pupil from Bradon Forest School living in Freshbrook is to play the lead role in 'The Shoemaker's Prodigious Wife' in late November.

Nadia Fosterof Crawford Close plays the wife of an old shoemaker in the humourous but thoughtful play by Garcia Lorca and directed by head of drama at the school David Calder.

The play takes place between 22 and 25 November.

Still room at the Secret Circus Link Arts Studios after-school arts and drama group for 8 to twelve year olds has places for another ten youngsters to take part in imaginative, creative activities.

Called Secret Circus, the group is led by Richard White and meets on Tuesdays from 4p.m. to 6p.m. "We've been developing a story which we add to each week," explained Richard. "Right now it's about the Loch Ness monster who is friendly with an old lady who lives in a magic castle. We act out the story whilst it's being told and have been drawing and making things to go with it.

"Secret Circus is tapping the childrens' imagination, creativity and bring out improvisation skills."

Rachel Wood from Grange Park said Secret Circus was great fun.

"We do painting, make things and we all put something into the story every week."

Neal Aplin from Covingham likes making up the play each week.

"I really look forward to coming to see where the story is going."

Steve Greenwood Invites you to discover how good It Is The new season jazz performances just commenced at the Link Arts Studios has well and truly established the West Swindon venue on the musical map. With audiences coming from Bristol, Reading and Gloucester - as well as Swindon - the new atmosphere' of the Jazz club' at the Link is building a reputation spanning regional boundaries.

Jazz in Swindon has been active since 1964, when the Jazz Society was formed and was given an added boost in 1985 by the formation of Jazz Front to cater specifically for contemporary jazz, with its shift in performance location to the Link Studios. Supported by Thamesdown Community Arts, Southern Arts and Jazz South, the performance line up has grown both in size and stature, bringing in internationally renowned musicians.

The Link Arts Studios is transformed into an authentic Club by its bar, low lights, balcony and flexible seating that is positioned close to the musicians. Anything from a duo to an eleven piece band can be accommodated along with 200 people.

The Studios excellent sound quality is appreciated not just by the audiences but also the musicians, the sound of the soulful saxophone takes over on Saturday nights as the autumn evenings draw in.

Contemporary jazz from the new wave to the blues is catered for by Jazz Front whilst the Jazz Society bring special events to Swindon.

I would like to end by referring again to my article in The Link last year, in November 1988. I wrote then that, 'West Swindon students form a very substantial force for good in the school'. That very much remains the case, only more so!

GREEN TENDENC ES Stores not trying hard enough says survey Following on from last months article by Swindon Friends of the Earth coordinator David Searby, we lookat an investigation by the group into how green shops in Swindon are.

In October Swindon Friends of the Earth published the results of a survey into the environmental performance of some of the town's leading food retailers. The survey was carried out on 16 September in 10 stores including 8 supermarkets and two specialist stores.

The survey shows that the town's supermarkets have made no significant attempt to provide an adequate and competitively priced range of organically produced food products. Organic food production is a key environmental issue because it helps avoid soil erosion, avoids excessive use of fertilisers and pesticides and thereby reduces pollution of rivers and the excessive use of energy.

The only large range of realistically priced organic food identified by the survey was at 'Swindon Pulse', a specialist retailer

based in Curtis Street.

The position on non-food products has shown some improvement, with supermarkets such as Tesco providing less damaging ingredients in own-brand household products, thereby allowing competitive prices to be charged.

However, no retailer in the survey stocked energy-saving light light bulbs and only Sainsbury in Stratton, Pulse and Holland & Barrett provided any unbleached toilet paper or kitchen paper.

Swindon Friends of the Earth spokesman David Ballard commented: "We are most disappointed that Swindon's supermarkets are not trying harder to provide a better range of organically produced food to their customers. Most national chains are now trying to persuade the consumer that theyare 'greener' than their competitors, but this survey shows that - in Swindon at least they still have a long way to go.

Thoughtful consumption, avoiding waste and choosing the least environmentally damaging option available can help reduce the

damage we are causing to the planet. Swindon Friends of the Earth will never endorse a product or retailer, but this survey provides useful information which can help members of the

How Green is Asda West Swindon's Gateway Superstore was one of the stores visited

by Friends of the Earth surveyors.

The store stocked only three items of organically grown fruit and vegetables and free-range eggs. Like most of the other chain stores, prices were significantly higher for these items when compared with chemically or mass produced equivalents.

The superstore also supplied organic flour and rice, along with Sainsbury at Stratton.

The survey could not find any organic or free-range meat, other than free range chickens.

As far as non-food products are concerned, Gateway did not stock phosphate-free washing powder.

Cruelty-free soap and shampoo was available at Gateway, but you had to pay 6 times more for the shampoo!

CFC-free aerosols were stocked by most stores, though the survey questions whether aerosols are needed at all.

Well what about Asda? What green products have they got for sale?

In the rush to satisfy the quickly growing consumer awareness that buying less harmful products makes a small contribution to the health of the planet, one cannot help cynicism that the suppliers of food and domestic goods

public makeup their own minds".

Not far from West Swindon is The School House restaurant which is found in old Victorian school building on Hook Street, a mile from Freshbrook Centre.

Built around 1860, the school functioned for about 100 years.

Now the Grade II listed building with its high beamed ceilings and log fires burning provide a splendid setting in which to enjoy fine food and wine. Recently a ten bedroom extension was added to compliment the design of the school house, providing the area with comfortable and much needed hotel accommodation.

The School House restaurant is run by Lorna Keast who has had several years in the catering business. She describes the cuisine as modern classical and consists mainly of French and English dishes.

Bike security stamping session A continuing wave of bicycle thefts In West Swindon has prompted the police to organise a free bike security stamping session.

It takes place on Saturday 4 November from 9a.m. to 11a.m. at Tooth ill Village Centre and Is being run Police Constables Pearce and Wys, by the two beat PCs for the Toothili area.

"Atone point in the summer there were 13 bikes a week being stolen," said PC Pearce. "So many youngsters have these fancy, expensive mountain bikes now that It's worth having them marked for security purposes. I hope we get a good response."

Keep Warm this Winter Nichola Quant, Senior Home Service Advisor with British Gas South Western, makes some suggestions as to how we can keep ourselves warm and save energy.

As the dark nights envelop us and the Autumn turns to Winter, there are-many simple and practical steps you can take to keep yourself and your house warm.

This does not necessarily mean enormous fuel bills as home insulation can help to cut down costs.

Loft insulation is good value for money as up to 25% of heat can be lost through an uninsulated loft. Loft insulation will pay for itself in two years or less in fuel bill savings. Installing more where your modern house is already insulated will save money in the long run.

Also include simple inexpensive measures such as curtains drawn at night (thick, lined ones preferably) but do not cover radiators. Draught excluders, such as 'sausage dogs' are effective as well as weather strips at doors and windows - but do remember to leave ventilators unobstructed.

A sheet of aluminium foil behind radiators will help reflect the heat back into a room, but do not obstruct the heat flow by placing furniture in front of the radiators.

Eating and drinking will also help to keep you warm, start the day with a warming breakfast such as porridge, or cereal with hot milk. This should be followed by at least one good meal later in the day. It is important to have plenty of hot drinks during the course of the day and do not forget a warming night cap before you go to bed.

Warm clothing is also essential, wearing several thin layers of clothing is warmer than one thick layer, and natural fibres such as wool are generally warmer than synthetic fibres.

Thermal underwear is a good investment and gloves, socks and a night cap will all help you keep really snug and warm.

Shopperphone notches up successfulfirstyear A successful telephone shopping service for the housebound reached its first birthday at the end of October.

The Swindon Shopperphone project was launched to help people who are housebound, disabled (permanently or on temporary basis), or who, for health or age related reasons, have difficulty in coping with their mainweekly food shopping. The project which is funded by Thamesdown Borough Council's Local Employment subcommittee also provides jobs for five people, four of whom are disabled.

From the customers point of view, using Shopperphone is simplicity itself. Using a shopping list provided by the project, the customers rings in the order and their requirements are entered into a computer. The order is delivered next day by a team who spend part of each morning touring the Coop Superstore in Old Town gathering the goods together.

Shopperphone coordinator Ann Swinmurn, who lives in Freshbrook, says the scheme got off to a slow start but is now being recognised as a helpful service.

"The team came together a year ago and we actually started deliveries just before Christmas. It took

the elderly. We're here to help for short periods if anybody has been ill, suffering post-natal depression for example or just comeback from hospital. There's no need for a formal referral from a professional.

The potential customer or a friend can approach us and all we ask is to have a reason for using the service."

Shopperphone started with a 'shopping list' ofl,500 items. Over the last ten months customers have added another 1,000 items, not

counting specialist foods for diabetics or seasonal items on offer.

The price the customer pays is exactly what are on the price labels at the Co-op Superstore and there is 50p delivery charge.

"The lads are very good shoppers," says Emily Hayes of Windmill Court group dwelling in Freshbrook. "They always bring what we want or they make good guesses if it's not in stock."

Neighbour Grace Sutton likes the visits from the delivery team.

"They're ever so gentle and helpful when they deliver our weekly order. It's such an efficient service; I don't know what we would do without Shopperphone."

Team leader Robert Chapman says his year working with the project has taught him lot. "We've all learnt to work together and around our different disabilities, I've learnt how difficult it must be for a mum to go shopping with two or three children and can appreciate the problems elderly people have trying to shop in a crowded supermarket. Its been a good year."

With 157 customers on their books, the Shopperphone scheme has capacity for about another 100.

Swindon's Gujarati Hindu Samaj (community) celebrated two important festivals at the Link Centre in October in preparation for the most important festival in the Hindu calender at the end of the month.

Diwali or Deepawali on 29 October represents the end of the year and thebeginningofthenew, and the festivals leading up to it form part of the holiest month for followers of the Hindu faith.

The Samaj gathered every evefling for Nava Raatri or nine nights in the Community Suite at the Link Centre, at the beginning

of October, to offer prayers and to dance around a shrine in honour of the Goddess Shakti who represents cosmic energy. In general the festival celebrates the victory of right over wrong and emphasizes strength and denial over aggressive power.

The festival of Shurad Purnima on 14 October takes place at the last full moon before Diwali and celebrates the Goddess Amba.

Next month, as the Christian community prepares for Christmas, The Link looks back at how Hindus celebrated the holiest event in their calender.

Harvest donation The Oliver Tomkins Playgroup recently donated several boxes of harvest produce given by the children to the residents of the Shaw Community Homes.

Diane Colbert, accompanied by staff from the homes, visited the Under Fives Centre at Kiln Park to receive the donation. Playgroup supervisor Jenny Woodman said, "Judy Sturgess, one of our volunteer helpers, suggested the Shaw units. Her daughter lives there and we thought it was a good idea.

A veterinary surgery opens in West Swindon on 6 November at Shaw Village Centre.

The surgery is a joint venture between vets Alan Robinson from Purton and Peter Southerden from Swindon. Liz Haynes will be the vet in charge at the Shaw surgery which is going to be run to suit the needs of working people.

Apart from being open all day, there will be surgeries from 8p.m. to 10p.m. every weekday and Saturday mornings.

"The Shaw surgery is well situated with lots of parking," says Liz Haynes. "The evening surgery will make it easier for people out at work during the day. Hopefully animal owners will come to us during the evening if their pet is unwell, rather than wait until the early hours and then call one of us out." However the three vets will be working in rotation to offer 24 hour coverage.

Another point which Peter makes strongly is that security is a specialised business. "Nobody in his right mind would employ a carpenter to install a central heating system but too often people are tempted to use an electrician to install security equipment.

They may be excellent at their own job but they wouldn't know BS4737 (the British Standard for Intruder Alarm Systems in Buildings) if it got up and bit them!".

Taking security precautions to safeguard your property and peace of mind makes sense and in the long run will save you money. Most people are under the misapprehension that burglar alarms are costly and can ruin your decor. HOME & GARDEN Cut Down to Size Many people seem afraid of touching their gardens once they have laid a patio and a trolley full of plants have been dropped into planting pits. It is a pleasure to sit back and watch them all grow, but not all plants are as attractive six years after planting as they are two years after planting.

I think my award winner in this category has to be the Berberis. At the garden centre, it looks so fresh in its black plastic pot, with graceful strays of neat foliage. There are some wonderful gold leaved or purple splashed with pink cultivators crying out for that patch of border next to the shed. But after a few years the graceful twigs have become a birds nest and even when the young leaves do gleam again in Spring, they are lost in comparison to the dull mass beneath.

Even when plants continue to be attractive they can be just too overwhelming for the garden pictured as a whole. My beautiful Magnolia stellata is climbing up towards two metres and clothed in its fresh green leaves it appears a little like a giant teacosy dropped in the middle of the lawn.

a tree shape. Again, this is easier done once the leaves have dropped so you can see what the result of pruning away first one branch, then another will be.

Finally, think about moving the plant. Would it look more attractive if it were planted in a larger border, with another plant or two to set off its foliage? Rearranging gardens inthis wayis alot cheaper and less disruptive than redecorating indoors, so take the opportunity to indulge your creative instinct.

Centre to make local Breakthrough West Swindon farmhouse to The growth of West Swindon has forced a change of direction upon a pioneering centre for deaf people and those who work with them.

For the past 15 years the Swindon Centre, formerly the Roughmoor Centre, of the Breakthrough Trust has offered residential facilities to groups of deaf and hearing people who have pursued a variety of social, educational and cultural activities.

However the centre, which occupies an old farmhouse just to the north of Nine Elms, Shaw, has been surrounded by housing development in the last year.

"We used to be surrounded by fields," said Terry Waters, Director of the Centre. "The housing development has put a lot of people off coming here as we're not in the country any longer.

We've had to rethink our aims and from the beginning of November, we will be changing from a residential centre to become an Information and Resources Centre. "This means we will focus on the needs of people in Wiltshire and in particular the 195,000 people now living in Swindon.

Of these, around 35,000 are affected by deafness and the isolation it brings."

Letters to The Link Dog Attack From C Mayes, Yarmouth Close, Toot hill

On 9 October a friend of mine was walking with three small children along the Kiln Park pathway when her four year old son was knocked to the ground and jumped onbya doberman puppy, which was, even though a young dog, much larger than the child.

This caused great distress to both mother and child although fortunately no physical injury was incurred.

Not unnaturally the shocked mother remonstrated albeit hysterically with the animal's owner, a heated argument followed the salient points of which were:a child should not be allowed i) to run on ahead of its mother even on a 'safe' footpath a dog's owner has a perfect ii) right to let his dog run wherever he likes and jump on whomsoever he pleases a dog can defecate and uriiii) nate anywhere the owner or dog chooses and no one has to clear it up people should under no ciriv) cumstances venture onto the grass areas.

My friend is still too shocked to be completely rational about this incident particularly in view of the dog attacks on children recently and so frequently reported in the press.

So on behalf of my friend I would like to say thank you to the kind gentleman who owned that doberman puppy:Thank you for picking up my friend's small son - I'm sure you would have if only you could have been bothered.

Thank you for the apology, uttered with such sincerity it was barely audible.

But most of all THANK YOU for considering that your dog has more rights than a human child.
