One event that we are particularly excited about is Swinterfest - the free arts and culture festival which takes place on the last weekend of January.

It promises to be the perfect antidote to chase away the winter blues with live music in spades, as well as added poetry and comedy this year.

Sixth formers tour planned new Lydiard House classrooms

By Barrie Hudson barrie@swindonlink.com Senior Lydiard Park Academy students were invited to tour the upper floor of historic Lydiard House which Swindon Borough Council plans to convert into sixth form facilities.

They were shown around the rooms, currently part of the conference centre, by Swindon Borough Council Director of Inclusion David Williams after being greeted by Cllr Marina Strinkovsky, the council's Cabinet Member for Planning and Placemaking.

The previous evening, the Cabinet had endorsed the £700,000 plan during a meeting attended by members of the Friends of Lydiard Park, the independent charity supporting and promoting interest, engagement and research into the Grade I listed house.

The charity has called for the plans to be paused, citing issues including risks to the historic site, lack of heritage and impact assessments, and declining future pupil numbers, and the concerns were put to Cabinet Members.

Greeting the sixth form students before their lunchtime tour, Cllr Strinkovsky said: "It's my absolute privilege to have in my portfolio all of this amazing heritage that Swindon has.

The students were impressed with what they saw.

Typical was Ilyas Sediqi, who said: "It's given a historic vibe and I feel that will influence people to learn more about the surrounding areas and contribute towards our learning."

Fellow sixth former Maria Vendramini said: "I think it's going to attract more people to the school - probably more teachers, as well, who'll want to work with the school."

Many of the students were

not just impressed by the spaces they saw but by the historic details. Lyla Dart and Holly Erwood, for example, admired the ornate designs of the ceilings, and both said these details should be retained.

Holly said: "It shows that you do not want to get rid of our history - plus, it's really nice!"

Gemma Piper, CEO of Park Academies Trust, said: "We've been working on this for a while now, in partnership with key stakeholders, exploring what the options were for increasing access and provision for the brilliant young people of Swindon, who ultimately are going to be the future custodians of all these important places, part of the history of Swindon."

The CEO added that the project not only improved provision for the young people but gave them the fascinating experience of being in the historic building.

News from SBC Thousands of Swindon children benefit from daily toothbrushing scheme More than 2,100 children across Swindon are now taking part in a daily supervised toothbrushing programme through the Big Brush Club, funded by Swindon Borough Council. So far, 30 primary and special schools (around two thirds of all eligible schools) have joined the scheme.

Each day, children brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste under staff supervision.

They are taught how to brush properly, how long to brush for and how to care for their teeth at home, helping to build healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

The programme is part of a wider early

years oral health initiative delivered alongside schools and NHS partners.

This includes parental guidance, free toothbrushes and toothpaste packs and additional support for communities with higher dental needs.

The impact is already being seen. New national figures for 2023/24 show that tooth decay among five year olds in Swindon has dropped from 28.9 per cent to 16.5 per cent over the past five years and is now well below the England average. While this success reflects longterm partnership working, the growth

of supervised brushing is playing a key role in maintaining and building on this progress.

Swindon residents encouraged to make recycling their 2026 resolution Swindon Borough Council is calling on residents to kick off 2026 with a simple but important New Year’s resolution to recycle more and waste less.

With the new year offering a fresh start, the council hopes households across Swindon will take small, everyday actions that make a big difference.

This could include separating recyclables more carefully, reducing contamination in recycling bins and choosing reusable products whenever possible.

Between January and November 2025, residents recycled more than 21,000 tonnes of materials from their homes, including dry recyclables, garden and food waste. If that recycling had been thrown away instead, it would have cost council taxpayers more than £3m to dispose of.

If every household in Swindon committed to improving their recycling habits even slightly, the cumulative impact on the environment would be enormous.

Nineteen Swindon roads resurfaced as borough council spends £5m tackling backlog Nineteen roads have been resurfaced across Swindon as part of the borough council’s annual minor roads resurfacing programme, helping to improve safety and reduce a backlog of road maintenance.

The work, which began in early October and finished on schedule, was delivered by the council’s highways contractor, Connors. Roads were prioritised under the Local Transport Plan, agreed by the council's Cabinet earlier this year, to ensure investment is targeted where it is needed most.

This forms part of the council’s annual major and minor road resurfacing programme, which will see just over £3.75m invested to fix deteriorating road surfaces across the Borough.

Overall, the council has a budget of more than £5m for road maintenance in the 2025/26 financial year, including £170,000 for reactive pothole repairs.

Roads that have benefited from the recent repairs include: - Hay Lane - Kingswood Avenue - Beech Avenue - Collett Avenue - Martinsfield - Southbrook Street The council’s highways team is also planning a programme of works for major roads and footpaths to begin in the new year. Cllr Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, said: “Residents tell us time and time again that better roads matter. That’s why, despite a challenging financial picture, we’re investing every pound wisely to make our

roads safer and more reliable.

“This programme of 19 roads is a step forward in tackling the £50m backlog of road repairs which have built up over a number of years, and I’m pleased works were completed on time, with minimal disruption for residents.

“We’re determined to keep Swindon moving. Even though this phase is complete, our wider programme continues, including innovative thermal patching to make repairs more sustainable and long-lasting.”

Building a greener Swindon

As we head into 2026, we are taking a closer look at Swindon Borough Council’s priorities and the three missions that underpin them. In this January edition, we have asked Deputy Leader of the council, Cllr Emma Bushell, to reflect on the progress made against the council’s mission to build a greener Swindon.

I am deeply concerned about the environment and believe that, as a society, we should be doing as much as we can to tackle climate change for the benefit of current and future generations.

So I was delighted when I was asked to become the council’s Ambassador for the Greener Swindon mission as it means I can play a part in shaping council policy in this area and really champion this agenda

with local businesses and local people alike.

Over the last 12 months, we have made good progress on the Greener mission, which was informed by hundreds of residents and local businesses when our wider Swindon Plan was developed two years ago.

As an organisation, we have an important role in leading by example to show what can be done to minimise our own carbon footprint.

We adopted a new Decarbonisation Framework last month which will guide our actions to reduce the borough’s greenhouse gas emissions and enhance residents’ quality of life. It also outlines emissions reduction work happening across council operations and borough-wide

Swindon Borough Council Deputy Leader cllr Emma Bushell initiatives to combat climate change, build resilience and prepare Swindon for the economic and environmental opportunities delivered through decarbonisation.

You may have also recently read in the Swindon Link about how we’re improving the energy efficiency of our council homes as part of a £30m investment programme.

This work will see new windows, doors and roofs installed at homes to improve heat insulation, as well as upgraded boilers and new solar panels on some homes, across the next five years. This will reduce residents’ energy bills and save them significant amounts of money.

Following the rollout of food waste to houses last year, 11,000 flats now benefit from this service. This has helped us collect more than 1,850 tonnes of household food waste, which is then processed into green energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser, helping to power homes and support agriculture.

This also makes the council money, so please help us by using your food waste caddies and keeping food waste out of your big black bins.

The work doesn’t stop there either, the planting season in 2024/25 saw 10,000 trees planted across the borough and, as we head into the 25/26 planting season, we plan to plant hundreds more trees with the help of the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and the Trees for Climate programme.

It’s been a really productive year for the Greener Swindon mission, but it’s really important that this work doesn’t stop.

While it may not seem like a priority for people going about their daily lives, improving the environment in Swindon is key to making everyone’s lives better both today and in the future.

I’m looking forward to seeing what more 2026 can bring us as we work to help Build a Greener Swindon.

Entry opens for 2026 Longevity Games The organisers of Swindon's Longevity Games have announced the opening of entry registration for next year's first event.

The move came only two weeks after the Series Finale of The Longevity Games 2025.

Designed to help adults of all ages and wallks of life age well through strength, mobility, and movement, the games have grown into a powerful community-driven movement promoting preventative health and physical activity.

The non-competitive sessions see participants work at their own pace - with plenty of encouragement - to improve strength, mobility and overall wellbeing through scalable, accessible competitive fitness events. Its mission is to make preventative health achievable, enjoyable, and community-driven.

Looking back on 2025, games founder Tim Howe said: "Across five events, participant numbers continued to grow, with many people taking part for the first time and others returning to level up from Novice to Intermediate or Proficient, building real strength and confidence in the process.

"The impact has been far more than fitness alone.

Participants have made significant health improvements — some even coming off long-term medication such as blood pressure tablets and Type 2 diabetes drugs, after adopting consistent movement and lifestyle changes inspired

Council sets out framework for decarbonisation

By Barrie Hudson barrie@swindonlink.com Swindon Borough Council has put together a new framework guiding actions to reduce the borough’s greenhouse gas emissions and enhance residents' quality of life.

Council Cabinet members approved the Decarbonisation Framework that sets out how the council will work across several priority themes in the coming years, namely Energy and Buildings; Green Spaces, Business, Transport and Health.

Decarbonisation is the process of reducing or eliminating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions from the council’s operations as well as pursuing policies and projects that support residents and organisations across Swindon to do the same.

Progressing the activity set out in the framework will make a key contribution to the council’s long-term Swindon

Tree planting in Lydiard Park Plan mission to Build a Greener Swindon, summarised as: “Fully playing our part as a council and a town in combatting climate change. Working with communities to find new ways of doing things that help, not hinder, the natural environment.”

The council will continue to oversee widespread tree planting, funded through the Government’s Trees for Climate programme, which has seen over 50,000 trees planted

across Swindon since 2020, including 10,000 planted over the past year.

Cllr Emma Bushell, Swindon Borough Council’s Deputy Leader and Ambassador for the Greener Swindon mission, said: “The new Decarbonisation Framework sets out the practical ways in which we will continue to reduce the council’s environmental footprint and support Swindon residents and organisations to do likewise.”

Council Leader hails Thames Valley devolution deal green light

Swindon Borough Council Leader Jim Robbins has predicted: “Swindon will be in pole position for major investment and long-term growth if it joins the new economic powerhouse being created in the Thames Valley.”

He spoke in the wake of the council Cabinet's decision to back the submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a Thames Valley Mayoral Strategic Authority (MSA) covering Swindon.

The proposed devolution deal, developed collaboratively by leaders and chief executives across the Thames Valley, could see Swindon benefit from billions of pounds in future economic growth.

The region, which would include Swindon, Oxfordshire and Berkshire, is already one of the most productive

If agreed by Government, devolution has the potential to unlock up to £18.7bn for the Thames Valley economy by 2040, generating £7bn in additional annual tax revenue and create new opportunities for residents and businesses.

Local councils would continue to deliver essential services

for residents, but the MSA would take responsibility for the region’s shared strategic challenges, including major transport investment, infrastructure planning, skills development and economic growth.

The Government’s evolving devolution model increasingly involves channeling funding for transport, housing, skills and innovation through combined authorities.

We are happy to announce our fundraising events for 2026. Rotary events, organised by us - open to all.

Fun events designed to raise as much money as possible for local charities.

First is our annual Charity Quiz with a very generous Ploughman's Supper followed by a selection of delicious homemade desserts made by the members of the Inner Wheel Club of North Wiltshire. It’s on Friday 13 March at the Supermarine Clubhouse at 6.30pm. This year the proceeds will go 50/50 to two local charities: CALM (Children with Leukaemia) and The Roxi Foundation.

In April we are staging a Murder Mystery play in one of our locality’s ancient churches. This is on Friday/ Saturday 24/25 April in St Michael's & All Angels church in Highworth. It's a fundraising event in association with the Highworth Amateur Dramatic Society and the ticket price includes a barbecue supper provided by a local butcher.

Our popular Swimathon is on 17 May at Highworth Recreation Centre. Since 2014, it’s been an annual event giving entrants the opportunity to raise funds for a charity THEY choose.

It's free to enter and we give Amazon vouchers to the swimmers who collect the most

sponsorship on themselves.

The main beneficiary this year will be Phoenix Enterprises, a charity which provides a vital safety net for over 120 vulnerable adults with mental and physical disabilities in Swindon.

And on 26 July, a Cyclothon, a brand new first-time event for us. We will run it in conjunction with Limitless Swindon and Wheels for All at the Moredon Sports Hub facility. Again, it's a fundraiser.

Swindon’s Health Hydro will reopen this month Swimmers will be jumping back into the pool at Swindon’s historic Victorian-era Health Hydro on Monday, 19 January when it reopens.

The Health Hydro has been closed while the first phase of major refurbishment was carried out. It is now getting ready to welcome back swimmers and gym users to refreshed spaces in the much-loved historic property when it reopens in the new year.

The restoration project has delivered a range of improvements, including new changing rooms, a redesigned entrance hall, gym and activity space, enhanced energy efficiency and new plant areas and equipment to support the building long-term.

As is common with projects in Grade II* listed buildings, detailed early investigations highlighted challenges that required careful redesign to protect the Health Hydro’s heritage.

Extensive safe removal of asbestos was also completed as part of the work Funding for the first phase has included grants from Historic England, Towns Fund money, Section 106 funding from developers and investment from the council.

Cllr Marina Strinkovsky, the borough's Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, said: “The Hydro is a unique and historic building and taking the right approach has meant working thoughtfully and safely at every stage.

The result is a facility that’s ready to welcome people back, with significant improvements already in place. I’m really looking forward to seeing swimmers and gym users enjoying the Hydro again. And while this reopening marks a major milestone, we’re continuing to work hard to secure funding for the next phases.”

Interview: Cher Smith MBE is Strategy Manager at Swindon Food Collective, an independent Swindon food bank currently feeding nearly 10,000 people per year, a third of them children.

By Barrie Hudson barrie@swindonlink.com Add together her time with Swindon Food Collective and her time with the former Swindon Foodbank, and Cher Smith has been at the forefront of this vital service for nearly a decade.

"We formed in 2018 when the former Swindon Foodbank closed.

"It was a case of the volunteers wanting to do it for themselves and for the local people, and that's why we became a collective.

"Our first funders were Swindon Borough Council, which helped get us off the ground.

We were able to provide a seamless transition, because the old foodbank closed on the Friday and the collective opened on the Monday.

"The service users never noticed a thing apart from the change in colour of uniform and the logo!"

There has been a foodbank in Swindon in one form or another for 20 years; Swindon's was the fifth in the country.

"In 2018 we were feeding 5,000 a year. Then Covid hit. and we went from having 50 tonnes of food feeding 5,000 to 120 tonnes and 8,000 overnight.

"Obviously, that meant we had to manage that with reduced volunteers because our volunteers went from 120 down to 25. We managed it all with 25 volunteers in little bubbles!

"We grew to meet the need.

We peaked at just under 11,000 18 months ago, and now we're feeding about 9,000, but that doesn't include the people who are fed through the charities that we donate to - the Breakfast Club, the Foyer, homeless hostels etc.

"People can get a referral through any agency in Swindon; any school, GPs,

their social practitioners, health visitors, Citizens Advice, the Swindon Borough Council Live Well team, any voluntary organisation.

"We were doing three referrals in six months and we used to issue little top-up bags in between, but we realised that the top-up bags really weren't enough.

"So we're transitioning toward six in six months, and that would be monitored and managed by the referring agency on need.

"A family box with household cleaning products, personal hygiene, pet food, things like that, is £75-worth of food.

It is for three days, minimum, maybe five, depending on what they've got in their cupboards, how good a cook they are etc.

"It's a buffer that gives a bit of emergency relief, and also enables them to access other services that can help them.

"Little things make a difference, things like around Mothers Day, or if somebody says it's their birthday and we have something in the cupboard that we can give them. We give it to the child to

give their mum.

"We also do literacy books; if children are there we can give them a book if it's their birthday or if they want to read. It's just a present to make a grim day a little brighter."

There are as many sequences of events which leave people needing the collective as there are people who use the collective, but anything from the sudden loss of a job toa glitch in the benefits system to an unforeseen household expense can mean the difference between having and not having enough to eat.

"If they're working, it might be that they've had a sudden bill.

When kids go back to school they need uniform; it might me that for a single mum a tyre exploded, and that's over £100 - the food budget gone for a week."

Cher is originally from Hertford, a member of a military family. Domestic violence disrupted that, and Cher recalls that she was still going to court at 12 to give evidence against her father.

"You can either make that something that takes you down,

LINK PEOPLE and you live your life as a victim - or you live your life as a survivor and you make a difference for others."

Originally wanting to be a doctor, Cher was on a waiting list to take up a place at the London Free Hospital when she decided to train as a nurse.

Having worked in that profession for years, Cher came to Swindon with late husband Phil in 1985.

Cher did agency work at the old Princess Margaret Hospital before becoming nursing officer with Swindon Cyrenians, the charity which in subsequent years evolved into Threshold Housing Link, and where Phil was to become operations manager.

Cher's increasingly prominent role saw her heavily involved with projects such as developing the Culvery Court shelter and planning the Carfax Street walk-in centre. She was made an MBE in 2010.

When Phil died in 2015, Cher "crashed and burned" but in 2016 when her vicar's wife said a manager was needed at the foodbank she stepped up to the task.

People can help the work of Swindon Food Collective in many ways. An app called Bank the Food (www.bankthefood. com) lists all the foodbank's in-store collection points, and simply buying and donating an extra food item with the family shop makes a difference.

Another app, easy fundraising (www.easyfundraising.org.uk) lists participating businesses which agree to donate to a chosen charity every time a customer spends money with them.

LINK POLITICS Looking Ahead: Swindon in 2026 A column by Swindon Borough Council Leader Cllr Jim Robbins Happy New Year! January is always a time for fresh starts and big plans and for us at the council, that means turning your priorities into real progress.

We keep getting out knocking on doors and have been listening to what matters most to you, and the message is clear: cleaner streets, better roads, safer communities, more jobs, and a town centre we can all be proud of. So here’s what we’re focusing on in 2026.

First up, fly-tipping. It’s frustrating, it’s ugly, and it’s illegal. We’ve already stepped up enforcement and recruited more wardens with powers to dish out fines, but this year we’re going further—more cameras, faster clear-ups, and a campaign to make sure everyone knows: dump it and you’ll pay for it.

Roads are next. I know potholes drive you mad.

We’ve lobbied the Government and received additional resources to resurface key routes, fill thousands of potholes, and upgrade street lighting.

This year, you should notice smoother journeys and better roads.

On anti-social behaviour, we’ve seen improvements with big falls in reported crime where our wardens have been patrolling, but we know there’s more to do. We’re expanding

our Community Safety Warden team and working with youth services to tackle the root causes.

We’ll keep working with the police to ensure we use our resources alongside theirs to make the biggest possible difference!

Jobs and skills are the backbone of a thriving town.

We’re linking schools, colleges, and employers to create real opportunities—whether that’s apprenticeships, training, or support for start-ups. Swindon has talent, and we’re making sure it stays here.

Our MPs have done a great job bringing jobs back to the town, and we will be making more positive announcements in 2026!

And then there’s town centre regeneration. This is the big one. We’re transforming Fleming Way with new trees and green spaces, reviving entertainment venues, and

unlocking sites for homes and businesses. It’s about creating a centre that feels alive again.

We keep pushing on our new links with the Thames Valley, and are working hard to lobby the Government for direct trains from Swindon to Oxford as a starting point. No more changing at Didcot and halving the journey time!

Finally, my personal New Year’s resolution? To knock down the old bus station!

It’s been a blight on the town for far too long and certainly hasn’t given the right impression to visitors to the town, and clearing it will give us the space we need to keep the regeneration rolling. Plus, it’ll make a great “before and after” photo for my next column!

2026 is about action, not words. Together, let’s make Swindon greener, fairer and better. We are determined to put Swindon back on the map.

A £10m loan was taken out

to pay salaries and utility bills, then paid back 14 days later when Council Tax direct debits arrived.

This is serious. We are committed to restoring stability, and we will take decisive steps.

We pledge to only vote for a fair and affordable Council Tax. We will hit the ground running.

Our town centre and local neighbourhoods need immediate care, which is why we are pledging a zerotolerance approach to flytipping from day one. We will also launch a comprehensive campaign to clean up Swindon’s litter, weeds, and graffiti.

We know that our town centre needs a boost.

To support local businesses and shoppers, we will introduce free town centre parking, starting with a 30-minute pilot

scheme.

We will refurbish the Wyvern Theatre so the public and performers can have a better experience now.

We want Swindon to be a destination. That means establishing a new entertainment venue at Regent Circus and enhancing our green spaces.

We will recognise four new Country Parks and build a new café at Coate Water.

Infrastructure matters, too.

We will fine utility companies if roadworks aren’t finished on time, and we will oppose inappropriate housing development while ensuring we have the needed houses for local families.

Finally, we will begin the vital work towards securing a second hospital for Swindon, ensuring our healthcare services can cope with our growing population.

Bigger, Bolder, Better: Swinterfest Returns with Music, Comedy & More!

Swinterfest, Swindon’s vibrant winter arts festival sponsored once again by UK Research & Innovation, is set to return for its eagerly-anticipated second year, running from Thursday 29 January to Sunday 1 February 2026.

Following a critically acclaimed debut in January 2025, which established the festival as a premier destination for live music, the 2026 iteration promises a broader and more immersive cultural experience across the Old Town area.

Recognising the depth of talent within the local and regional creative community, Swinterfest 2026 will proudly start the transformation into a truly multidisciplinary arts showcase.

New dedicated strands will be introduced, featuring compelling poetry and spoken word performances, hosted by Maurice Spillane and Sophie Boyce, alongside a lively, independent comedy fringe event organised by The Old Town Comedy Club, and a Sip & Paint at Rudi's Bar. These additions, complemented by some other arts-based activities still being finalised, ensure that the four-day event offers diverse avenues of discovery and engagement for all audiences, with most events being free entry.

At its core, music remains a driving force. The 2026 lineup 22

boasts over 30 compelling artists, spanning multiple genres and guaranteeing outstanding musical entertainment.

Confirmed acts already include the energetic sounds of I See Orange, the roots-infused storytelling of Matt Owens & The Delusional Vanity Project, the dynamic presence of Chasing Dolls, and the much loved Canute's Plastic Army.

This curated selection reinforces Swinterfest’s commitment to providing an exceptional platform for both local and more nationally recognised talent.

Swinterfest will be fundraising again for Swindon and Wiltshire’s Prospect Hospice, which provides vital end-of-life care.

Getting ready for Swindon's 2026 Festival of Tomorrow

The next Festival of Tomorrow will be held in February.

The 2025 event saw more than 47,000 people head for Steam and other venues to celebrate and be amazed by the latest in science, innovation and art.

A spokesperson said: "Explore the wonders of the human mind, journey to the stars or interact with robots as the Festival of Tomorrow returns this February.

"The acclaimed annual festival brings artists and creative organisations together with scientists and researchers, to explore the ideas, discoveries and innovation that will shape our shared future."

Organisers say visitors can look forward to an actionpacked programme of performances, immersive art, workshops, events and free drop-in activities, thanks to support from key partners UK Research and Innovation,

This year’s theme of Living In The Future will see artists, performers, researchers, universities and organisations from across the UK coming together to re-imagine how we will live, work and play in the world of tomorrow.

Thousands of primary school children across the borough will get an early taste of the excitement, with a programme of workshops, performances

and interactive online shows and challenges in the run up to the half-term break.

Families can once again look forward to a packed halfterm week of free events, performances and hands-on activities that are sure to keep everyone entertained.

Steam Museum will host two immersive experiences – both exploring the inner workings of the human brain. State of Mind is billed as an entrancing walkthrough audiovisual

experience developed by creative studio Squid Soup in collaboration with neuroscientist Professor Adrian Owen, to playfully explore the effects of today’s digitised world on the workings of our mind.

The other is Network, described as a beautifully illuminated giant network of neurons, to experience a spellbinding fusion of light and sound, symbolising the travel of impulses along neural pathways.

There will also be a variety of events at the festival's other venues - The Brunel, the Designer Outlet and the Science Museum Group’s Science and Innovation Park at Wroughton. The festival will culminate in a two-day Finale Extravaganza taking place on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 February, at The Deanery CE Academy in Wichelstowe.
