Have your say and use your vote

We all want it but when it comes to the crunch there's a good proportion of us who just shrug our shoulders say 'meh' and carry on doing whatever we were doing before whether it's tending the allotment or trying to glean the latest celebrity gossip from Heat magazine.

And that is your democratic right to decide not to have your say. We don't have a system in this country like Australia where voting is mandatory. It would probably be a very different political landscape if that was the case.

But those same people who decide not to vote are not exactly in a great position to moan about whatever the outcome is after the fact. They can moan but it carries less weight than someone who actually made an effort to get off their couch to change the outcome.

Anyway, it's parish council election time across Swindon on Thursday 4 May. Normally, when it comes to

parish elections, apathy does seem to be, unfortunately, the name of the game but I would urge you all to take part as for many of us in Swindon it will be the first time that these parish council elections actually ever take place and if ever there was an open field this would be it.

The formation of these parishes has been controversial to say the least with some people against them in principle as they have been foisted upon us in the name of Swindon Borough Council cutting costs leaving us all with increased council tax bills. The Spirit of Swindon: Sport, media and culture: Creating opportunity for rest and play

By Tom Wilkes of Spirit of Swindon Poverty, health and education have all featured in our articles so far. The connection between these topics and economic inequality seems clear enough but the link with sport, media and culture is less obvious.

Participation in sport and culture, both recreational activities, can provide for physical, emotional, mental and spiritual refreshment and stimulation, distinct from the working and home environments.

Approximately 35% of people in Swindon participate in sport at least once a week, figures comparable to the national average, with disabled people and those from lower-socio-economic backgrounds tending to be less active. While council services try to signpost residents on to community based sport and the facilities available, the way many live their lives, for example working unsociable hours or on shifts, makes them less likely to take part in sport during their resting periods.

The likelihood of engaging in recreation through culture and sport is linked to education, health and opportunity. The more highly educated a person is, and the higher their income, the more likely they are to participate in active recreation; a link between education and culture recognised and used nationally. As noted in April’s Link, Swindon scores particularly poorly on this criteria.

Nevertheless, on the positive side, Swindon residents make greater use of our museums, arts, sports and heritage assets than the average

for England even though the town has fewer of them than the national average. This signals a demand for greater provision, one which the proposal for a new Swindon Museum and Art Gallery will meet. The annual Literature Festival is a good example of an event that offers many opportunities for participation in cultural activities of various forms.

Where does media fit in to this picture?

Politically or commercially biased agendas have taken over tracts of the media as revenue streams have been declining. Across the Atlantic we have seen how one-sided media channels can feed division and confirm prejudices.

In the UK, and here in Swindon, this is less prevalent but still present. Locally, newspapers and magazines are at their best when they act as ‘good neighbours to the town’, providing fair, balanced and accurate coverage for their communities. Part of this involves raising

uncomfortable issues and asking difficult questions, not as a way of gaining listeners or readers but to serve the common good.

The factors underlying economic inequality are complex and multiple but there are ways of addressing them. Spirit of Swindon recognises that economic inequality is societal and therefore political, however ideological dynamics sometimes prevent us from facing its challenges. Local Authorities across England have sought to meet increasing costs and financial restraints by selling assets which have affected sport and culture at the ‘grass roots’ level. Although Swindon has, until recently, been better placed than many parts of the country, the number of people employed in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector in Swindon has fallen by 30% over a five year period.

What one thing you can do this month (apart from participating in sport and buying a ticket for a Lit Festival event) is to read around each topic and ask awkward questions. Actively seeking alternative voices can be difficult but also rewarding and can encourage all of us to transcend party ideology.

Spirit of Swindon has emerged from a gathering of people who want to raise consciousness of the impact of economic inequality and help Swindon offer a lead to other towns and cities in the UK. Batten down the hatches as Swindon Town Centre will be buzzing with free entertainment and activities for all the family to enjoy next month – inspired by all things pirates.

From Friday 2 through to Sunday 4 June the town centre will host a Pirate Fest spectacular to coincide with the launch of the new Pirates of the Caribbean film ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’ which opens in cinemas at the end of May. There will be an abundance of free activities designed especially for families. Wharf Green will be transformed into Captain Hook’s Pirate Ship zone, featuring live music and dance, children’s entertainment, competitions and prizes. Activities will include apple

bobbing, pirate limbo, funfair rides and free face painting will be available across the town including the Parade, the Brunel Shopping Centre and Regent Circus.

Visitors will also be able to take advantage of lunchtime offers from town centre businesses and hunt for golden treasure in the pirate treasure hunt. Plus, there will be opportunities to meet all your favourite Peter Pan characters across the town centre.

The pirates event, which is taking place during school half-term, is the result of partnership working between The Brunel Centre, inSwindon BID Company, The Parade and Regent Circus.

An ambitious plan to breathe new life into Swindon’s ailing town centre has been unveiled by Forward Swindon.

The organisation has been charged with delivering the Swindon Borough Council Town Centre Masterplan which was published by the Council in 2013.

A key challenge – according to Forward Swindon – is to break the cycle of ‘nothing happening’.

It argues that potential investors see Swindon as ‘risky’ and are put off by uncertainty surrounding the future development of the town centre. Forward Swindon propose a series of connected schemes within an ‘arc of opportunity’ running north-east from the Railway Heritage Quarter to the station and south east along Fleming Way. A re-organisation of pedestrian and vehicle traffic is also seen as

key to the development of the area.

Areas earmarked for development include the Railway Village, the station approach and Kimmerfields.

Paul Chamberlain, director of New Partnerships explained: “A key objective of the Delivery Plan is to change investors’ perceptions, through a series of projects that will act as a catalyst for future investment in the area.

“Yes, there have been commercial sensitivities, but we also wanted to be ready to emphasise delivery – to have things to point to. We know there have been too many empty promises.”

Amy, 7, donates birthday gifts to charity News in brief Big hearted Amy Heron asked friends to help her celebrate her 7th birthday by donating Easter Eggs to a children’s charity.

The Tadpole Farm pupil, who celebrated her birthday on 12 March, decided to give away her haul of 24 eggs to the Memory Makers project to help those less fortunate than herself.

She said: “I wanted to give Easter eggs to people who go to Memory Makers. If they don’t have any chocolate eggs at Easter they won’t be very happy.

“Donating the eggs makes me feel good and I hope they will make people happy.”

She added that because she enjoys thinking of others she wants to become a nurse when she grows up.

Amy’s mum Fiona said: “All the children were very keen to follow her idea and all the parents were happy to support it. I’m really proud of her.”

Memory Makers, which has been running for three years, supports young people aged from 9-12 who have experienced some form of trauma in their lives. The charity

Pop-up shop in Freshbrook to aid British Heart Foundation

Freshbrook Community Centre will be turned into a pop-up shop on Saturday 20 May with all profits going to the British Heart Foundation, all thanks to one seven year old boy with big ideas.

Kai Lewis spotted a television advert by the British Heart Foundation calling for donations towards helping children with holes in their hearts and decided he wanted to do something about it.

Kai asked parents Ross and Henrietta if he could set up a shop to sell items and raise money for

the cause, using the Freshbrook Community Centre where his father is the caretaker.

Henrietta said: "Kai has been so excited as all the generous donations have come in from across the town. The response via Facebook and from word of mouth has just been amazing. Our house is completely full of things we need to sell on the day now!

"We are so proud of Kai for coming up with the idea all on his own and wanting to do something for these children who rely on

the British Heart Foundation and all their hard work. Kai is already planning another event after the pop up shop!"

The event will run from 3pm on Saturday 20 May, and you will still be able to donate items up until 19 May, or alternatively bring along donations to sell on the day alongside Kai's sizeable amount of donated stock.

New CEO appointed Peter Boucher has been appointed as the new CEO at Excalibur Communications.

Swindon heads to the polls for parish elections Residents of Swindon's newly parished areas will head to the polls on 4 May to decide on their new parish councillors.

Voters in all of the newly parished areas of the town should have received their polling cards with details on how and where to vote.

If you have yet to receive your polling card, call 01793 464601 or contact: elecreg@swindon.gov.uk.

The statutory minimum number of parish councillors for each area is five - there is no maximum number.

The number of parish councillors in existing parishes in Swindon range from five to 23.

Anyone wishing to vote but is unable to get to a polling station on 4 May can request a postal vote.

The Council decided in November 2016 to create four new parishes in Swindon. The decision means that 64,000 properties are now in a parished area for the first time.

Parish councils are already wellestablished in other areas of the Borough and have provided local services for the residents there for many years. Shadow parish councils have been overseeing the transfer of some of these services such as grass cutting over the past few

months.

However, the new parish system has not been introduced without objection. A very vocal element in the public gallery during the council meeting that saw the plans voted through to set up the new parishes, as well as calls from the Labour group calling the whole process a “debacle” have been key flash points in the implementation of this new layer of governance.

The four new parishes are West Swindon, Central Swindon North, and Central Swindon South, all of which are in previously unparished areas, while a new St Andrews Parish has been created from part of the current Blunsdon St Andrew Parish. In addition, the existing Parish of Nythe has been extended to include Eldene and Liden.

Controversial incinerator plans in spotlight Controversial plans to create a renewable energy centre at Keypoint in South Marston will go under the spotlight at a special planning meeting next month.

The meeting, attended by Developers Rolton Kilbride and members of the SKIP (Stop Keypoint Incinerator Project) campaign group, will be held at the Wyvern Theatre at 6.30pm on May 16.

Rolton Kilbride applied last June for permission to build a ‘gasification plant’ which would process 150,000 tonnes of domestic waste a year. The developers say the plant will provide a safe and clean way of generating renewable energy from treated household waste; produce energy that can be used by nearby businesses and help cut operating costs; reduce greenhouse gas emissions The proposal has run into strong opposition. Local residents formed the SKIP campaign and organised a petition against the proposal, which gathered more than 3,000 signatures.

More than 100 objections have been sent to the planning department with objectors citing

the impact of HGV traffic and the potential for pollution in the area, particularly should the plant malfunction.

SKIP chairman, Robert Ayres, said: “From looking at their submissions so far I do not feel the developers have adequately addressed all the concerns that have been raised.”

The SKIP group claim there are errors and inconsistencies in the developers’ greenhouse gas calculations that still need to be resolved.

The planning meeting will take place at 6.30pm on May 16.

House and Home Swindon property development boom is great for buyers It’s an exciting time for the development of Swindon with the town seeing a huge increase in the building of new homes in recent years with thousands of new properties that are earmarked for the town.

Most recently, plans have been given the go-ahead to create a development of 147 flats and 293 houses as the second stage of a development at a site near Marlborough Lane.

Construction on the site, which will include a mix of two, three and four bedroomed homes, flats and affordable housing, is set to begin in the summer and the first residents are set to move in next spring.

Other developments around the town include the ambitious 2,000 home Tadpole Gate project on a 179 hectare site to the north of Swindon, near Blunsdon.

Crest Nicholson, David Nicholson and Bovis Homes are among the companies involved in the on-going project. Building on a greenfield site at the edge of Swindon, the development promises panoramic views of where the Wiltshire Downs meet the Cotswolds.

Characterised by tree-lined avenues, large front and rear gardens and generous on-plot parking; Tadpole Garden Village will also boast a local centre for its community, retail and convenience facilities.

The site includes a primary school, play areas, pedestrian and cycle networks, mature and managed hedgerows, ponds and residentonly private allotments.

Properties are also now available on the 890 home Badbury Park development, built by developer Redrow, between Coate Water and

the Great Western Hospital.

But by far the largest of the all the new building projects in Swindon is the New Eastern Villages development - with a total site area of 724 hectares, it represents the largest of Swindon’s strategic growth areas. It will comprise 8,000 homes, a new district centre, and 40 hectares of employment and associated health, retail, education and leisure facilities which should be complete by 2026.

Paul advises: "Some of these things are just common sense. The first thing I would say to people is to de-clutter. The reason why most people want to move is because the are looking for more living space.

If they can see that your home can offer that, they are more likely to buy.

"Just get rid of those bits and pieces that don't need to be there.

In some cases, it might be worth putting some of your things into storage."

He added that as well as thinking about the inside of your home, kerbside appeal is also vitally important.

"Most people tend to make their minds up about a property in

the first 30 or 40 seconds so it is important to create a good first impression with potential buyers."

Most house hunters like to see a blank canvas so that they can imagine putting their own stamp on the property.

Swindon 105.5 Community Radio celebrates ninth birthday with new studio opening - Presenter entered for NY Award

Swindon 105.5 celebrated nine years since bringing its regionally unique service to the town with the launch of the Daniel Gooch Studio at Liden Library on 23 March.

The Station celebrated the anniversary with the launch of its Training Studio, which will be known as the Daniel Gooch Studio with a packed crowd hearing from station volunteers, North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson, Covingham and Dorcan Ward Councillor Kevin Parry and the Mayor of Swindon, Cllr Eric Shaw.

A specially made plaque was unveiled by the Mayor and creator Colin Hatch, which now sits on the

door to the studio, which will also be shared by the newly formed Swindon 105.5 Community Music Project as a recording base for their service users.

Shirley Ludford, Station Manager, said: “Swindon 105.5 has seen thousands of people of all ages and abilities coming in to the station during the past 9 years, seeing great personal achievements.

Finalising our Training Studio and naming it as the “Daniel Gooch Studio” is a very fitting way of celebrating this anniversary, linking with “Swindon 175” and the town we serve."

April as it was announced that Swindon 105.5’s news presenter and chief reporter, Dave Woods hopes to represent the Liden based community radio station in New York later this year after entering one of the world’s most prestigious radio awards.

The New York Festivals’ International Radio Program Awards honours programming from stations, networks and producers internationally.

Dave’s entry, ‘Lydiard: Past, Present and Future’ broadcast last September, was a special edition of the regular daily morning programme ‘Roundabout Swindon’.

Traffic diverted as work begins on major revamp

News in brief Trolley dash time There is still time to enrol a team in the Brunel Trolley TT. The fundraising trolley dash around Swindon town centre will raise money for the Youth Adventure Trust - a Swindon based charity working with vulnerable young people from our community.

Mystery train dates A series of murder mysteries has been announced by Swindon and Cricklade Railway. Fridays, 16 June, 14 July, 1 September.

Bluebell charity run Akers Way has been closed between St Mary’s Church roundabout and Cheney Manor industrial estate for reconstruction work.

This initial phase of the £900,000 scheme is set to last six weeks and the remainder of Akers Way from Purton Road to the roundabout with Cheney Manor industrial estate will remain open during this phase.

The work aims to address problems with the deteriorating concrete base of the road by modifying the concrete road base slabs and adding

a thicker road surfacing material layer on top.

It is hoped that the design will increase the flexibility of the road and provide a longer-lasting protective surface over the road structure below. The contractor will also be carrying out improvements to the parking along the road.

Traffic is now being diverted via Cheney Manor Industrial Estate Road, Darby Close and Cheney Manor Road. There will be no access to Akers Way from the residential

section of Cheney Manor Road including Harvey Grove, Brooklands Avenue and Manor Gardens.

The second phase, set to last three weeks, will focus on a 200m stretch on the western section of Akers Way from the Purton Road Roundabout towards Nova Hreod Academy.

Education News New free schools welcomed

Two new Swindon free schools have been approved by The Government but the number of school places needed in the town still needs to be addressed according to Swindon Borough Council.

The two new schools will be Abbey Farm Educate Together Primary School in North Swindon and Badbury Park Primary School in South Swindon.

This comes after applications for six free schools were submitted to The Government in the Autumn.

Swindon Borough Council leader David Renard said: “We are delighted to get two schools but we believe we still have some capacity issues to address in North Swindon and we will have to sit down and see how the numbers match up.

“The council has a statutory responsibility to ensure there is enough school places for young people. It can be very difficult these days because there is a high demand for places.

“Since 2004 the Conservative Administration has invested heavily in new schools across the Borough to replace the leaking, crumbling inadequate buildings we inherited.

“We haven’t had feedback about

why Great Western Academy was turned down so we don’t fully understand why two were a success and one wasn’t. We would like to understand for any future bids that go in by providers to ensure they are a success.”

The Labour Group Shadow Lead for Education, Cllr Carol Shelley, said: “I welcome government investment for new schools in areas where they are needed and I congratulate the academy trusts on their successful bids.

“However it is worrying that The Government has turned down another free school in an area that is again needed. This goes to the heart of why Labour is against the government’s Free Schools programme. Rather than solely focussing on delivering school places in areas where they’re needed, it’s a popularity contest based on factors not exclusively related to increasing school places."

We're making learning fun Moredon Primary and Nursery School have had a term packed with fun, excitement and valuable lessons.

‘People Who Help Us’ has been part of a recent focus this term for the nursery children. They’ve been on outings to various places and have been lucky enough to have visits from many different people.

Their first visitor was a police officer, she explained how her job involved keeping everybody safe and showed the children her uniform and badge. The following week the children had the chance to dress up in firefighter suits.

When Davina Sparks from the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service came in - she spoke about the serious dangers of playing with fire. A nurse was the next exciting visitor, who taught the children how to find their pulse and listen to their heartbeat. A particularly enjoyable activity the children took part in this term was a recycling workshop, carried out by Pam Jones from Swindon Borough Council.

The children learned about why we use different types of bins for

different types of rubbish. The workshop proved to be a valuable lesson, as on a local walk to the Manor Garden Centre the children were disappointed to spot so much litter down the pathways. Whilst at the Garden Centre, the children discovered all different types of plants and bought some to help brighten up the outside of the nursery.

The last visit the children made was to the local post office, where they bought stamps and posted Mother’s Day cards.

This term has been really busy for the children, but has been packed with fun experiences and lessons, provided at Moredon Primary and Nursery School. The ‘outstanding’ nursery, led by a qualified teacher, has space for up to 52 children a year, offering 15 hours a week in either morning or afternoon sessions.

Trust says £22m gallery plan still on track following resignation Trustees behind Swindon’s proposed £22m art gallery and museum project attempted to steady the ship following the shock resignation of director Hadrian Ellory-van Dekker for “personal reasons”.

Before a packed meeting at New College’s Phoenix Theatre, Robert Hiscox, Chairman of Trustees, reminded the audience of the motivation behind the scheme and the many benefits it would bring to the town.

"If you build a beautiful building here, it really will make a measurable difference.

"This isn't just a place to hang art and display collections, I seriously believe it will give a throbbing heart to Swindon that you can all be proud of."

He said that the development would have a considerable impact on the rest of the town, attracting new investment in shops, restaurants and cafes.

His passion was echoed by Mike Pringle of the Richard Jefferies Museum who urged the people of the town to look beyond the town’s railway heritage and towards the future: "We have one chance to save our museum, it's about a wider view of Swindon's culture and

giving a new impression of who we are."

Among the business leaders present at the meeting was Excalibur's James Phipps who threw his weight behind the plan: “We won't be here in five to ten years if this project and the town centre regeneration doesn't happen," he said.

At the end of the presentation around 90 per cent of a show of hands supported the new build.

After the event, the Chair of the

Swindon Museum and Art Gallery Trust, Robert Hiscox, said: “We had a lively debate, and by the end of that it was clear that there is a huge amount of passion locally for Swindon to have this new, iconic museum and art gallery in the town centre.

"More than 140 people from across the town attended and just seven people voted against the proposal.

“There was considerable enthusiasm in the room for

the project, as people began to appreciate what it will mean for Swindon, and many people came to us afterwards to ask what they could do to help make it happen.

This is a very exciting time for Swindon indeed.”

SBC has committed £5m of capital funding and had secured a £1.3m contribution from the Local Enterprise Partnership.

The SMAG Trust plans to submit a £10m bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund in November.

The great and the good of the town’s business community turned out on Thursday 6 April for a Switch On To Swindon networking breakfast.

Munching on bacon baps and drinking coffee, the attendees heard from several speakers including Jenny Groves, the newly appointed chair of The Swindon Place Board, the private sector-led body that is driving the Switch On To Swindon campaign.

Switch On To Swindon is driven by local businesses and community groups to support and deliver the changes they want to see.

The campaign is based on similar initiatives from across the country that have already brought in significant investment for their regions, including Doncaster and

Coventry.

The breakfast event, which took place at The National Self Build and Renovation Centre (NSBRC) was attended by ambassadors, who are community-minded and business people who have signed up to support the campaign.

Other speakers included estate agent Richard James, Kris Talikowski who runs The Core juice bar in Old Town and Harvey Fremlin, one of the employee-owners of NSBRC. Switch On To Swindon is looking for more Ambassadors from all ranges of business and community organisations to join the campaign to show people inside and outside of Swindon what the town has to offer.

Snakes - they may not be at the top of everyone’s favourite animal list and instinctively are natural hunters, but they are often misunderstood, complex creatures.

In the reptile house at Studley Grange visitors will find three species of snake; The Corn Snake, The Californian King Snake and the Boa Constrictor. Here's eight facts that you may not know about these snakes; 1. Corn Snakes are native to America and are named because farmers used to think that the snakes were eating their corn, but as snakes are carnivores they were actually hunting for the mice that lived in the barns and not the corn.

2. Corn snakes can grow up to 6ft long and live up to 25 years in captivity.

3. Corn snakes are a constrictor, who strike their prey and then coil their body around it. They then squeeze the prey to prevent the blood circulating to the brain, the prey then falls unconscious and the snake will swallow it whole.

4. Another constrictor at Studley Grange is the Boa Constrictor, these feed in the same way but do not hunt. They lie and wait for their prey to pass and then ambush them. They are nocturnal so will do their hunting at night.

5. Boa constrictors can grow to 18 feet long, their usual prey would be rodents, bats, small mammals and monkeys, but the larger Boas have been known to prey on deer.

6. Most snakes lay eggs but the boa is one of few that actually give birth to live young.

7. The Californian King snake is another constrictor but besides feeding off small mammals this snake will eat other snakes, even its own species and are named the King Snake because of this.

8. The Californian King snake is relatively small and averages a length of 4-5 feet. As with all snakes Californian King Snakes' jaws are not fused together and they have hinge joints to allow the head to be very flexible. This allows the snake to unhinge its jaw and swallow prey larger than its head.

The reptile house at Studley Grange is in the Farm Park and Zoo area and is home to the third largest species of tarantula, cockroaches, sun beetles and various species of lizards. Visit them – if you dare!

guide to live music in Swindon through May Now that we are all getting over being stuffed with easter eggs and loud noises from VicFest in April (which was incredible by the way) we can get ourselves prepared for another monthly jaunt through the live music offerings in Swindon.

But firstly, are you one of those people who has always watched The Voice on TV and thought "I could have a go at that"?

Then May is your chance as Level III on Commercial Road hosts an Open Mic audition to appear on this year's show, taking place on 5 May. Bring your instrument, a few songs and, of course, your voice to be part of this popular TV phenomenon.

Mixing things up a little at The Victoria on 12 May, cult hero John Otway will be bringing his chaotic live show to Swindon once again,

taking to the stage as only he knows how. Known for his overly energetic performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test back in 1977 (where he managed to leap onto an amplifier and land precariously straddling a large wooden box) Otway has never really calmed down. Seen to be believed.

Keep something left in the tank though, as on 16 May The Vic

will be welcoming those 'teenage dirt-bags' Wheatus for a show that will likely go down in Swindon's musical history books.

Swindon Arts Centre will be in full flow on 14 May as the Swing Birds return, flying in to celebrate the anniversary of their sell out performance last time in Swindon.

And the fun at the Arts Centre doesn't stop there, with Pete Brown, son of Rock’n'Roll veteran Joe, and his new and wonderfully talented bluegrass band The NewGrass Cutters, returning to entertain fans in the town on 27 May. One for the pop-punk kids in the town now; Boston Manor will be at Level III on 24 May. Support comes from tour buddies Casey, the always impressive local rockers A Way With Words and the travelling genius known as Heartwork. This is another one of those Sheer Music shows, so you know it'll be quality.

Recipe: spice it up with squash and black bean chilli

Either stuff a whole squash with the chilli, or dice and roast the squash and add it to the chilli. The latter opens up a whole variety of serving suggestions: eat it with rice or in a baked potato; top it with a dollop of soured cream, some spicy tomato salsa or some guacamole; stuff it in a taco with some grated cheese; or spread it over a tortilla. If you are stuffing the squash you will need to use one that is a suitable size and will hold its shape when cooked, such as onion squash.

1 medium butternut, large onion or smallish crown prince squash 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for roasting 1 large onion, chopped 4 celery sticks, finely chopped 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped 1 green pepper, deseeded and chopped 3 large garlic cloves, crushed 1–2 tsp crushed chipotle chillies (if you can’t source them, substitute

another fresh or dried red chilli) 1 tsp dried marjoram or handful of fresh oregano 2 bay leaves 2 tsp ground cumin 1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 x 400g cans black beans, rinsed and drained juice of 1 lime (approx. 2 tbsp)

Have you ever entered a poetry competition?

If you are a closet poet it’s a great way to test yourself.

Winning poems have a few things in common. The poem should have a cracking opening. You want the judge’s attention straight away. The second is that the last lines should make the judge hold her breath or

at least send her away to reflect.

The lines in the middle are fillers but they must be poetic – some images, clever word play but most of all you must be convincing. If there’s a twist that’s a bonus.

Finally, you need a good title.

Titles like “Spring” or “Walking the Dog” won’t cut it.

Here are some examples from a really good poem, “A Leisure Centre is also a Temple of Learning” by Sue Boyle. I bet that title gets your attention!

The opening lines are:

chunks. Heat the oil in a large heavy pan over a medium–high heat. Add the onion and celery. Reduce the heat to medium, and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes until soft. Add the peppers and continue cooking for a further 10 minutes or so, stirring frequently.

Stir in the garlic, and cook for another minute. Add the chilli, 1–2 teaspoons of salt, a teaspoon of black pepper, the herbs and cumin. Give everything a good mix then add the tomatoes. Simmer, uncovered, for about 30 minutes.

Stir in the beans and continue to simmer for a further 10 minutes.

Remove the bay leaves, stir in the lime juice and coriander and adjust the seasoning to taste. If using roast squash, add it now, heat through, and then serve. If stuffing a whole squash, fill each roasted squash half with the filling mixture. Loco legend is star of show at new Steam exhibition A Swindon-built locomotive will be the star turn in a new exhibition that opens at Steam on Saturday 8 April.

King George V returned to Swindon's Steam Museum on a low loader in November 2015 and received plenty of admiring glances as it made its way into the town from the M4.

The National Railway Museum in York loaned the locomotive to Steam in preparation for the town’s Swindon175 celebrations last year, which honoured Swindon’s railway heritage.

Now the engine will be the focus of attention once more as ‘King George V – A Locomotive Legend’ opens at the museum this weekend.

The exhibition celebrates the 90th anniversary of the building of the famous locomotive.

Showing objects, documents and photographs from STEAM’s collection, the exhibition explores the story of King George V, from its design, build and operation; through to its decline under British Railways and eventual return to glory when it was preserved as part of the National Collection.

Council’s Leadership Manager for Museums and Heritage, said: “Swindon produced many magnificent engines, but King George V is arguably the most famous of them all.

“The King has a very interesting past and this new exhibition encapsulates this history perfectly and I would urge everyone to visit STEAM and learn about the engine

which made Swindon a world beater.”

The locomotive was designed by Charles B Collet and was the GWR’s most powerful 4-6-0 engine. KGV was the first ‘King’ Class built at Swindon Works in June 1927, and was shipped to the United States in August 1927 to feature in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s centenary celebrations. On its return

to Britain, the locomotive resumed operation on the GWR network, hauling high speed passenger services such as the Cornish Riviera Express.

King George V – A Locomotive Legend runs from 8 April to 31 December 2017 and is included with standard admission.

Railway photographer celebrates birthday with the King From The Archives with Link founding publisher Roger Ogle May sees the ninetieth anniversary of King Geoge V, probably the most famous locomotive to be built in Swindon Works. Former Works photographer Roy Nash was also born in May 1927.

Ten years ago The Link featured the King and Roy on their joint eightieth birthday. The King is now the centre of a new exhibition at Steam Museum until December to mark 90 years of the first of 29 in the King class of locomotives.

Roy left Pinehurst School at the age of 14 to become an office boy at Vickers Armstrong, South Marston and started his apprenticeship in the Railway Works in 1941, qualifying to join the drawing office at the age of 21 in 1948 where he stayed for 38 years, until the Works shut down.

The threat of closure looked imminent with the arrival of Works manager Harry Roberts in 1972, but against expectation, he brought forward a plan to revitalise Swindon and Roy found himself in the right place at the right time.

He said: “One day I was called to see Harry to be told management was going to have a go at

King George V which was built in the Swindon Works is celebrating its ninetieth birthday this year with a special exhibition at STEAM diversifying the Works by attracting engineering contracts. He needed publicity and wanted me to take pictures of everything and be ready to take photos of visiting VIPs. I was more than happy, but my boss wasn’t pleased as I was out of the office so much; I was free to go anywhere I wanted.”

Roy’s interest in photography had been sparked at the age of seven when his father showed him how prints were made, commenting that he was hooked by the magic of a negative image appearing in a tray of chemicals in the darkroom.

When he started working Roy quickly found success in GWR, and

later British Rail, staff association photographic exhibitions and competitions. Always prepared to record events for posterity, even though it was his last day of employment, Roy was ready with his camera on 27 March 1986 to photograph the emotions on the faces of colleagues as the famous Works hooter sounded for the last time.

Roy continued taking pictures for the British Rail regional public relations office on a freelance basis including the visit of Diana, Princess of Wales when she came to Swindon in 1989.

lot of time scanning and printing images from his collection. “I’ve always gone for top of the range cameras and bought my first Leica in 1945.” he said. “It cost £60 and I’ve still got it; my mother was shocked at the small fortune I had spent. I can’t imagine what her reaction would have been if she knew the cost of the digital Leica I bought in 2008.

“I honestly don’t know how many pictures I’ve taken or how many prints I have in boxes all around the house. It must be quite a few thousand.”

Started in 2008, popular Indian restaurant Bengal Square in Peatmoor has consistently run charitable fundraising nights donating all profits to worthy causes across the Swindon area.

Now, the restaurant is expanding this charitable evening to their newly reopened sister site Mantra in Old Town.

Held every Monday and Tuesday at Bengal Square, and every Tuesday at Mantra, the charity nights have raised over £100,000 to date which has been shared amongst local causes from youth football teams to Macmillan cancer research.

Owner Hanif Robbani said: “We donate all profits raised on the evening to the cause of choice, and this can be further added to if the organisers hold a raffle, quiz or auction.

“Donations from ourselves of £350+ are not uncommon and the best night we’ve ever had raised a grand total of over £3,000.

Photographer Richard has his eye on the prize Link Magazine photographer Richard Wintle has been shortlisted for a prestigious National Association of Press Agencies award. Veteran snapper Richard, of Calex Picture Agency, will attend an award ceremony at the Grange City Hotel in London on May 12, where the winner will be announced.

His shortlisted picture was taken during the County Ground clash between Swindon Town and Fleetwood Town on December 17 2016.

Richard said: “I was positioned at the edge of the 18 yard box, quite close to the action. I was shooting away and I knew that I had something, but I wasn’t sure until I had a proper look at half time. I guess I just got lucky with this one because everything came together.”

Richard’s photograph captured Swindon Town striker Nicky Ajose frozen in a balletic tumble as he took on Fleetwood Town keeper Alex Cairns.

“This frame was one of a sequence of three that I managed to capture but this was the one. It is, to my mind, a great agency picture because it’s a nice tight action shot that would fit several formats.”

Richard’s picture was taken on a Nikon D810 using a Sigma 7200mm lens. He used a shutter speed of 1/800 to freeze the moment.

Swindon200, the new equality and inclusion project that launched earlier this year, held its first workshop on Saturday 25 March with 30 people attending.

The event was an opportunity for people with a passion for improving the town for all who live here to come together, network, develop their knowledge and understanding and to generate ideas for events or projects which can help make Swindon a model of fairness, inclusion, opportunity and fulfilment.

The Swindon200 project is a partnership between Voluntary Action Swindon and Swindon Equality Coalition, which launched at the Swindon Community Conference at the National Trust in January.

Together, attendees developed and launched a new ‘Swindon Equality & Inclusion Charter’, a community charter which the project now aims to get as many local people and organisations signed up to.

The March workshop was delivered with Swindon Borough Council, who is funding the project.

The name Swindon200 was inspired by Swindon 175, which took place last year. Another aspect of the project is that it aims to sign up 200 people in Swindon to become ‘Equality Ambassadors’. In return, the project offers opportunities for learning, engagement and networking.

Swindon200 will be holding more workshops throughout the year.

Controversially earmarked, earlier this year, for conversion into flats by current occupiers, Greenwich Leisure Ltd, the former Milton Road Baths, which opened in 1892, is the latest focus of Swindon Heritage’s blue plaque scheme.

We've launched a crowdfunding page to raise the £400 required to cast and install a plaque on the building - the fifth in the series.

Project manager Noel Beauchamp said: “Our first four plaques, which honoured a pioneering suffragette, two war heroes and a film star, underlined the breadth of Swindon’s amazing heritage, but we thought it was time to return to

Golden Oldies beat the blues by raising the rafters An award-winning charity that addresses isolation amongst the elderly through its fun daytime singalongs wants to reach out to more people across the Swindon area.

The Golden-Oldies launched 11 years ago in and around Bath and Bristol with just four sessions.

This has grown now to over 150 across South West England, South Wales, Essex, The Midlands and North Yorkshire. New sessions starting in Exeter, Liverpool and Cornwall later this year will see the total reach 200. These are taken by 50 dedicated freelance session leaders in the town and it enjoys the support of Swindon Borough Council.

Its popular monthly daytime singing and activity session at Coleview Community Centre, Towcester Road, started in 2015 and is led by Alison Dawn.

The next session is from 10.30am to 11.30am on Thursday May 4.

The songs are the memory-evoking pop tunes of the 50s onwards, including of course the hits of Sir Cliff Richard, the Patron of GoldenOldies. Everyone is invited to enjoy their local session at Coleview

The people attending are older people, many who live in isolation, adults with learning difficulties and increasing numbers of people who are living with dementia.

Founded by renowned West of England choir leader Grenville Jones who originates from Swindon, he is always quick to point out that Goldies is not about singing in a

choir; “We simply try to give people something that they can look forward to each month. A reason to get out and enjoy being with others, making friends, singing and smiling.

We know that for thousands, Goldies is now a very important part of their lives. Come along on May 4 to see what Goldies is all about,” he said.

Goldies has won many awards in the past 11 years and featured in the media World-Wide.

Most recently it was awarded top place in the National Voluntary Arts Awards and there has also been considerable recognition for its intergenerational programme with schools across the UK. Brave Beth loses locks for charity Stepping out for Air Ambulance A big hearted youngster has agreed to have her flowing tresses snipped to raise £866 for the Prospect Hospice.

She will also be donating her 14-inch braids to the Little Princess Trust charity - to be made into wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment.

She explained: "I chose the Prospect because they provided end of life care to my grandad, great nan and auntie - they do an amazing job. ."

Year 8 Lydiard Park Academy pupil Beth Vince, 13, took the plunge this

month in front of her mum Leonora, nan Wendy and 14-month old sister Beatrice.

As her long hair was cut Beth said: "It feels really strange - I've had long hair for as long as I can remember. It feels a lot lighter and I can feel the air on my neck."

And as she looked at the result in the mirror at her new pixie style cut, she added: "It looks really nice - it's going to take a little while to get used to but I love it."

Beth's mum Leonora said: "At first I thought it was a bit crazy but we are super proud of Beth."

Staff from Excalibur Communications walked more than 75 miles to work – raising £2,000 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance in the process.

Colleagues of Excalibur Technical Director Graham Ford heard he was planning to trek from his home in the Welsh town of Croesyceiliog to the company’s HQ in Swindon as part of National Walk to Work day… so they decided to keep him company.

Setting out on Friday, on a journey that provided close encounters with an electric fence, coaches, caravans – not to mention being set upon by a large and angry herd of sheep, the group finally made it to work on Monday morning.

Walking in unexpectedly high temperatures, the group that also included Darren Harper, Mike Hayden and Tony Jones were gradually joined by more and more Excalibur colleagues as they drew closer to Arclite House in Peatmoor.

Between them, Excalibur’s personnel clocked up 477 miles, and are set to continue with fundraising to reach the £10,000 target it has set itself to help Wiltshire Air Ambulance in 2017. The charity

MP joins Uplands School pupils for charity bikeathon North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson joined teachers and students from Uplands school, as well as representatives from the Rotary Club and Rockin’ Robin from Swindon Town Football Club at one of their charity ‘Bikeathons’ at Asda Walmart for the Uplands Educational Trust.

The trust is currently trying to raise £5,000 towards buying a new minibus so that learners will be able to attend work placements, holiday clubs and be able to socialise with their peers. Horizons College is encouraging volunteers to get involved cycling 50 miles at each event and according to the

educational trust’s website, they have raised approximately £2,300 so far. Justin was on hand to join the team in cycling a mile as part of his contribution to the 50.

Justin said: “I took this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers who have worked exceptionally hard for the UET. I have been a long-standing supporter of the Trust which provides so many opportunities to its learners and it is so great to see the students so enthusiastic. Their efforts have been remarkable.”

Big hearted youngsters go the distance for good cause Big hearted youngsters from Oakhurst Community Primary School went the extra mile to raise cash for charity.

Cheered on by teachers and North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson, the Year 6 children threw themselves into the fundraiser with an aim of raising £500.

Since becoming an MP, Justin is now a patron of the Swindon branch of the British Heart Foundation and has been supporting a campaign to provide lifesaving defibrillator access in schools.

He has also supported BHF’s parliamentary campaigns to introduce lifesaving skills into the national curriculum.

Justin said: “It was fantastic to see students so enthusiastic to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and we enjoyed cheering them on as they raced around. As a patron of the Swindon branch of the British Heart Foundation I know only too well how much their fundraising efforts are appreciated.”

Teams needed for annual dragon boat race at Coate On Sunday 25 June the Rotary Club of Swindon Phoenix will be holding their 5th annual Dragon Boat Race at Coate Water Country Park.

The event is open to anyone over the age of 12 who can form a team and participate in the racing on the day. Each team is encouraged to raise money for local charities.

There will be rides, refreshments, stalls etc on the day so it makes for a great family/community day out for everyone.

It’s fair to say that I haven’t used my bike over the winter as much as I have previously or anywhere near as much as I would like to have done.

This has partly been because of work commitments meaning a lot more travel but, if I’m completely honest with myself, it’s partly because I used the additional travel as an excuse to drive to work when I have been in Swindon.

I never really appreciated how much benefit I was getting from a simple 30-minute cycle to work until I stopped doing it.

I now feel unfit, I have definitely put on “a few pounds” and my knees are playing up from a lack of exercise.

I meet all of my friends who cycle and they’re fit, healthy and the thing I envy of them the most: They can say that they took on the winter weather, the dark nights, the cold, wet mornings and they won!

Suzuki SX4 S-Cross SZ-T: Good value crossover The old Suzuki SX4 S-Cross from 2013 was okay but rather bland.

Suzuki have obviously taken note of this criticism and this latest version is generally chunkier with a bold chrome grille and revised lights front and rear. It looks smart and the good news is, it’s smart on the road too.

A quick flick of a dial lets the driver adapt to varying conditions. Alas, our test car, in SZ-T trim, was strictly two-wheel drive but none the worse for that. I can say that having used the 4WD system in other Suzukis, it's good, although not for serious off-road work.

On the road, the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross is a pleasure to drive. Under the bonnet buyers can specify a diesel engine but I don’t think you want that. Instead go for the surprisingly nippy turbocharged petrol engine.

The 1.0L turbo three-pot serves up 109bhp which, on the face of it, isn’t a lot. Yet it reveals itself to be a flexible and torquey little unit that can shift on if you wind it up

Try it in a dinghy with Bowmoor Sailing Club

Bowmoor Sailing Club near Lechlade will be holding its second and last 'Come and Try' day this year in conjunction with the RYA ‘s Push the Boat Out campaign on the 20 May 2017 from 10.30am until 3.30pm.

Bowmoor helms will be on hand to take potential new members out on our lake.

Visitors are advised to bring a change of clothing and a towel just in case they get wet. Visitors can

come and chat to members of the club to find out more – whether it’s social sailing, enjoying the fresh air on a fine day or competitive racing.

They also cater for Windsurfing, Open Water Swimming, Paddle Boarding, RC Boats and Canoeing.

The sailing club has just purchased 3 RS Terra dinghies with the help of the Eric Twiname Trust to give junior sailors an alternative choice of boat. These will be made available to junior members for

training and racing.

Junior and youth training courses are held on a regular basis to improve sailing skills and are a fun way of getting children into the exhilarating sport.

Bowmoor Sailing Club is a family friendly club open 365 days a year, with a year round racing programme together with one of the largest youth fleets in the country.

They are an RYA Recognised

Training Centre and the first club to achieve Volvo Champion Club status.

Swindon teen’s charity skydive in memory of best friend

A Swindon teenager is fulfilling her promise to her best friend who died of a heart and lung condition and jumping 10,000ft from a plane for Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, which supports her friend’s family.

Ash Cleverly, 19, from Grange Park, wants to keep Erika Cowie’s memory alive and also Erika’s love for Rainbow Trust, which supports families caring for a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.

Erika, from Rodbourne, who Ash describes as the “sister she never had”, died of idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension two months after her 18th Birthday in September last year.

She was diagnosed when she was 13 and was not expected to reach her 14th birthday. The lifethreating disease prevents the heart from sufficiently pumping blood through the pulmonary arteries.
