Freshbrook centre reopens

Freshbrook Community Centre is back in business, just under eight months after it was shut down by Swindon Council after the management committee had its charitable status withdrawn. Members of the two Neighbourhood Police Teams will present a review of work priorities set for them at an earlier forum meeting and discuss their future work on Tuesday 11 May, 7.30pm in West Swindon Library. A brewery group is again considering the building of a pub at Redhouse Village Centre after the 2008 proposal collapsed due to the recession. Not a bright idea

After three years persuading Swindon Council that the speed limit on Tadpole Lane outside the two special schools in North Swindon should be reduced, staff were outraged in early April to discover council contractors had attached a 50mph to the school signpost.

Special needs teacher and health and safety officer Lorna Breslin said the school has a log of the many incidents where speeding drivers have nearly smashed into minibusses full of children. She said, “last year the council put down road markings on either side of the entrance to indicate a school. Then they put up a sign showing drivers how fast they can go past our entrance. Children come to the schools by mini-bus and taxi from all over Swindon, but many drivers seem to ignore they might be turning into the driveway or

leaving. There have been so many near misses.” A council spokesman said, “the contractors putting up new legally-required 50mph repeater signs along Tadpole Lane used an existing sign pole because it was cheaper than putting up a new one, and reduces clutter at the roadside. “Now it’s been drawn to our attention we have moved the sign to a more appropriate place.” The school is continuing to call on the council to install even clearer messages to drivers such as solar powered flashing notices.

Chinese Experience may return to former glory

The increasingly derelict building on the edge of Peatmoor Lagoon was bought at auction for the asking price of £100,000 at the end of April by a group of Chinese entrepreneurs from the South coast who have indicated that they want reopen it as a restaurant. The large building on two floors was launched as the Chinese Experience in 1991 and over the years went through a number of owners until the end of 2008 when the recession killed off business. Since then it has been attacked by vandals and taggers. Clothing charity Dressability is expanding its work to help disabled children and their parents keep up with the latest fashion trends - by making clothes more user-friendly. The government thinks people should be able to choose a GP practice that is the most convenient for them. This could be a medical centre near a place of work, rather than close to home. While nine out of ten people say they are satisfied with the quality of the services they receive – a significant minority say that they would like to move to a different GP practice. Council tax bills have arrived in the post - and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau is offering some timely advice for those who are eligible to receive reductions in their payments. The CAB is reminding those who get help paying their council tax to check how much that benefit will be during the next year - and keep the council informed of any change in circumstances. Failure to inform Swindon Council means paying too much or too little and perhaps having to repay money back in the future. Work starts on Mouldon Hill

The traffic congestion outside the locked gates of Mouldon Hill Park opposite Taw Hill should be a thing of the past by the summer when a 2.2 hectares close to the entrance is developed. Work has started on building two car parks for 30 vehicles, a tarmac area and a stone and dust overflow area, next to the previously built access road off Thamesdown Drive. A large football pitch and two small junior pitches have been ploughed and prepared for grass seed. These will be ready for use in a year’s time. In the Autumn a tree lined avenue will be planted each side of the access road. The developed site will be secured by fencing and kissing-gates will give pedestrians access to Mouldon Hill lake and the park-land itself.

In the early part of the year the building of Oakhurst Primary School was 16 weeks behind schedule, but contractors have poured in more workers and the progress looks good for children to move from the mobiles on the adjacent site into their brand new school in September. “All the snow delayed the brick-laying but the builders tripled their workforce and caught up,” said headteacher Dale Burr. “Some of the scaffolding is now coming down, the children have made visits to the site and we are about to assess some mock classrooms so we can be sure the building is completed exactly as we need it.” Abbey Meads councillor Vera Tomlinson said rumours that the school would not be finished on time were totally incorrect. ”There are always people who voice their concerns or are quick to criticise but everything is going extremely well and the school will be up and running on time and to budget.” From September Oakhurst will triple in size from the present 49 children to over 200 in reception to Year 6. Millbrook Primary School has opened Caterpillars Pre-School in the community room next to the reception class. Early years foundation stage manager Alison Stone said the group would be open on five mornings a week and afternoon sessions would start if there is demand. “We’re extending the foundation stage 2 to foundation stage 1 to make the transition from home into pre-school and then school as smooth as possible.” Caterpillars starts with all the twenty places taken. They stand like above ground archaeology, unexplained, unloved and largely ignored, perhaps surprising the passer-by, yet mysterious and brooding in the landscape. A new section of the 19th Century Wilts & Berks canal towpath has been restored and will be officially unveiled on Saturday 1 May, 11am. Members of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust will be conducting tours of the mile-long path which runs behind Nova Hreod School and Moredon playing fields, parallel to the River Ray between Pembroke Park and Cheney Manor. The reclaimed towpath joins up with an already restored section of the canal at Mouldon Hill. Early railway pioneers struggle with engines

Railway historian Steve Wakefield continues his reflections on the 175th year of the Great Western Railway and considers the choice of rolling stock for the new railway line. Brunel had thought through his requirements for locomotives to haul the trains along the GWR mainline as early as 1836 by making enquiries from constructors of locomotives and he issued clear ideas for the most suitable locomotive that would work on his railway. He wrote: ‘It is not to exceed 10½ tons exclusive of tender and if above 8 tons is to be carried upon 6 wheels. The width in clear between the rails is 7ft 0” and the height of the chimney as usual… and for the purpose of improvement to be similar to the same parts of the best engines now used on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.’ Brunel ordered 20 locomotives from different makers and some of these did not perform as expected. Benefits from being a Friend of Lydiard Park Annual meeting on Saturday 8 May

Thanks to a bequest to the Friends of Lydiard Park by a long time supporter, the late Miss Norah Hardwick, the Friends of Lydiard Park can now support projects to maintain the fabric of the buildings and contribute to the acquisition of artifacts that would enhance the visitor experience. The first major commitment has been a substantial contribution to the appeal launched by St Mary’s Church which is in desperate need of conservation work. An application to English Heritage for financial support towards the cost of repairing the roof has been submitted and the Hardwick bequest will help the work start at the end of the year. Once weathertight the church will be raising £800,000 to conserve the historic wall paintngs and monuments within the building. In return for the financial contribution, Swindon Council is giving Friends free entry to Lydiard House and the walled garden. At the annual general meeting on 8 May, 2.30pm, distinguished architect Michael Grey will talk about how Lydiard has influenced his work designing modern mansions through to social housing. Becoming a friend costs £10 or £18 for a couple. The AGM will be rounded off with tea and cakes. Swindon - don’t be disappointed. Festival of Literature tickets going fast Already sold out is Maureen Lipman on 5 May. Others are likely to follow suit. Authors and speakers proving especially popular include Cherie Blair at the Wyvern on 3 May; Jenni Murray and Milton Jones on 5 May at the Arts Centre; Michael Portillo and rugby guru Brian Moore on 11 May, and Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy on 12 May, all at STEAM. Tickets are also selling well for numerous less well known authors, such as scientists Professor Steve Jones and Anil Ananthaswamy, historian and social commentator John O’Farrell, and community activist Peter Tatchell, above. The ponds act as settlement beds for water running off the former landfill site. Different varieties of reeds have been planted to filter out contaminants as water flows by gravity through the system before it is allowed to drain into the River Ray closeby. Designed by Swindon Borough Council with assistance from the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust at Slimbridge, the project is saving the council £240,000 a year in pumping water into tankers for specialist treatment near Bristol Site manager Bob Fisher said, “the wet winter months have shown that the water is contained within the system, save for a few areas where the water is weeping through the lining. This should seal

itself over coming months. We’ll see the desired ecology developing during the summer as the reeds grow and get to work on pollutants washed off the forest area.” The park also has a separate deep level collection system whereby some 400 litres of polluted water is pumped daily to the Thames Water treatment works at Barnfield Road. The site can be visited from Sparcells or via the River Ray Parkway cycle/walking route. In response to an appeal in the March Link, Bob was contacted by four keen bird watchers who are observing how the birdlife takes to the site. Bob has posted a list of the reeds planted on the notice board on the edge of the site close to Sparcells.

Indian orphanage fund tops £5,000

Over the last three years Ali McCallum from Walcot has raised £5,000 for Palna orphanage in New Delhi and he aims to donate another £1,000 by the end of the year. Ali has sold Christmas cards to friends and family, held cake sales at school, washed cars and chopped wood. Most recently, some of his pictures have been used by Palna on cards, sold to raise money in India. As an infant Ali was left in a basket outside the orphanage before being adopted and brought to Swindon by Neil and Kauser McCallum. The money he has raised has been spent on medicines and vaccines and paid for a much needed repair to the roof of one of the orphanage buildings. Within a week of our article about vandals slashing a trampoline for disabled children donations flooded in, more than covering the cost of a replacement. In April we reported the damage, including safety ropes being cut on a climbing frame in the play garden shared by Special Tots and the Koalas Special Opportunities playgroup at Salt Way Centre in Middleleaze. Stephanie Hathaway, manager of Koalas, said, “the offers poured in, it restored our faith in human nature.” She thanked readers for their responses, including Zurich, Swindon College students, who raised over £50, and Stonehouse Christian Fellowship, who donated £170‚ more than enough to cover the £220 bill. • The DeVere Hotel hosted the Koala’s Spring Ball on 21 March which raised £2,707, topping last year’s total though fewer people attended. Stephanie said, “it was a super evening thanks to the DeVere and everybody who came along. Otters arrive at Studley Grange

After a delay because of necessary inspections three male otters took up residence at Studley Grange Butterfly World on 19 April. They have a purpose built enclosure with shelter, two ponds and a large area to scamper in. A second enclosure is being built for the introduction by the summer of a family of meerkats.
