Upper Stratton Baptist Church has been doing a stirling job collecting and sorting donations for the refugees. Over 60 tonnes was donated in the first two and half weeks of April. Church elder Chris Butcher said, "we have been astonished and overwhelmed by the willingness of Swindon people to give practical help. It has caught us by surprise."

Teddies for Kosovar children Ruth Richmond from Toothill had a huge response to a March 1998 Link article when she appealed for fire proof, fibre filling from old duvets, cushions and pillows which she uses to stuff teddies.

Last year she knitted 300 for Emergency Care for Children.

I have asked myself on a number of occasions why this is the case and the following reasons have been confirmed by clients.

Not only is the advertisement clear and in colour, it is also placed in a magazine that is read throughout by the majority of households that receive it. Some magazines and newspapers are quite simply page after page of advertising with very little in the way of articles of interest which means that the number of people reading them is much reduced. Therefore the chances of the advert being noticed, let alone read, is much less.

I think you can sum up The Link magazine by stating that the readership figure must be very close to the circulation figure. It is for this reason that our advertisements have been the most successful.

Our thanks go to The Link on its twentieth anniversary. We wish them ongoing success in the Swindon area in coming years.

Jane Graham from the Local Plan Group is urging people to read the document and respond to it. "This is the first time the council has produced such a document so early in plan preparation.

The Local Plan will affect us all and we want as many people as possible to give us their views."

Plan needs to improve quality, not quantity Jean Saunders, below, co-ordinator of Swindon Friends of the Earth, casts a critical eye over Swindon Borough Council's public consultation paper to review the local plan to the year 2011.

"The Borough Council must be congratulated for their new approach to town planning which should ensure that more people have their say about how the borough should shape up over the next decade. Development issues have been presented briefly and in simple language whilst commonsense questions have been posed to set you thinking.

Key points have been identified such as growing traffic and loss of countryside. Suggestions solutions are: reducing the need to travel by car by making it easier to walk, cycle or use public transport, and by encouraging more development of derelict land and reusing empty buildings first.

Of course they have made assumptions that Swindon's 'Front Garden will be developed by 2011.

But this land may not be needed.

The latest Government household projections for England produced at the end of March show a drop in numbers.

If the council now concentrates on providing houses and jobs for local people rather than encouraging large companies to move to Swindon and dragging in thousands of workers from other parts of the country who would far rather stay where they are, then we might spare Swindon's countryside a bit longer from the bulldozers.

This is your golden opportunity to influence the decision makers please don't waste it."

Hospital on the web Work on Swindon's new hospital at Commonhead has commenced and developers Tarmac have set up an internet site to show off the facilities.

The hospital proposal created a huge debate between those who wanted it built soon and out of town, and those who called for PMH to be redeveloped or a town centre site to be used.

GM food meeting Swindon Campaign Against Modification of Food by Genetic Engineering (SCAM) is holding a public meeting at Blunsdon Village Hall on Tuesday 11 May, 7.30pm to discuss the planting of a GM crap at Lushill Farm, Hannington, near Blunsdon.

This is the largest farm trial in Britain and SCAM want it stopped because there was no preliminary wildlife survey and inadequate advance advertising. For details, call Sue Birley on 790438.

Proud to visit grave A poignant moment in the Westlea School trip took place when ten year old Danny White was able to visit the grave of his great uncle Thomas Wheeler in the British military cemetary at Bayeux.

"My grandad Dennis Wheeler if we were able to go there," said gave me an old photo and the Danny. He also showed me the letter to his mother from my uncle Thomas's commanding officer which said he had fought courageously. He was only 18."

The school group stopped at the cemetary whilst visiting the Bayeux tapestry museum and Danny found the headstone with his teacher Peter Newbury.

"I felt quite sad, but also proud to see my uncle's grave. The visit to France has given me a clearer picture of how horrible war is."

For Bill Padgett and Rose Knight, receiving Maundy money from the Queen on Maundy Thursday, 1 April at Bristol Cathedral will be a memory to treasure.

Rose, 88, from Freshbrook, said, "I've never experienced anything like it. It was wonderful - and, for once, we had perfect weather.

Something that really struck me was the lovely smile on the Queen's face because she often looks so

solemn in photos.

"We'll never forget it, I'm sure."

Bill and Rose joined a throng of 1,100 people at the ceremony. Seventy three men and 73 women (one for each year of the Queen's age), each received a red purse containing coins of the realm and a white purse containing silver pennies.

Bright Easter for young artists Children at Tregoze School had the chance to earn themselves an extra Easter egg when the Halifax estate agents at Shaw Centre asked them to enter a drawing and colouring competition.

It is the second year that the Halifax has run the competition for 5 to nine year olds. The ten winners received a goody bag with a T shirt and drawing materials, and the overall winner received a giant Easter egg.

Lucky Joanna Johnson, centre, was the winner and Jessica Ford ham came second. Artist Ken Bint copied Joanna's design onto the front window of the Halifax property shop where it can still be seen.

TOOTH ILL

Children go back in time for a taste of discipine Year 6 children from Toothill School had a taste of Victorian life at the end of last term.

Two classes spent the day at Sevington at a Victorian one-roomed school, preserved as it was when it closed in 1913. The children, in costume for the day, were taught in the Victorian manner and loved it, despite the strict discipline.

The outing gave pupils a glimpse of living history to underpin National Curriculum work on Victorian times.

" We're attempting to brighten up the centre and its surroundings to make it more inviting, and also to put a smile on people's faces," said centre administrator Annette Kennedy. "The graffiti around the entrance has been removed and the pansies have lasted three weeks, so we're encouraged that people are gaining respect for the centre."

Centre's annual meeting Toothill Community Centre holds its annual general meeting on Thursday 17 June, 7.30pm.

All residents of Toothill are invited to attend, hear reports of last year's activities including the annual accounts, and to elect next year's management committee.

Annette Kennedy said the centre has enjoyed its best year financially and was able to invest in new facilities. "We have carried out a lot of refurbishment in the building and in July we will be installing a new kitchen for use by the pensioners lunch club and for private hire. On 28 April we organised a fish and chip supper for nearly 100 elderly people and are planning other events. We are keen to organise more activities for the community and to get more people involved with the building."

Year 3 children at Brook Field School travelled back in time to ancient Egypt on the last day of the Spring term on 26 March.

Everybody took on a character, whether it was swathed in mummy bandages, becoming a god, or masquerading as Cleopatra. Activities during the day included making mummy cards, Egyptian sweet cakes or taking part in a quiz about their terms work.

During the term children studied life in ancient Egypt, translating and writing their own names in hieroglyphics, and creating artwork which turned their classrooms into an Egyptian house.

Teacher Melanie Sancto said, "it was a fantastic project which really inspired the children to investigate and learn about another culture during ancient times."

Enchanting

Classic night tickets are hot The Wiltshire Festival's Classical Extravaganza at Lydiard Country Park on Friday 20 August is well on its way to being a sell out.

Tickets have been selling quickly since The Link exclusively revealed last month that 13 year old soprano Charlotte Church, the biggest name in classical music, has been booked for the festival. With publicity also on GWR fm and sponsors Classic fm, bookings are seventy per cent up on the same time last year.

Charlotte's appearance in Swindon will be one of only 10 public performances this year. The week before she is playing Kensington Palace. She will join the English National Symphony orchestra conducted by resident conductor, the enigmatic Jae Alexander.

The Swindon Arts Foundation choir of local school children will

also take to the stage and the ever popular 'Last Night of the Proms' second half will be performed by Swindon born Bethan Dudley.

To add to the spectacle will be the yearly arrival of the WWII Spitfire on the tail of a Messerschmidt 109.

The West Swindon Shakespeare Festival is planning a millennium spectacular so that 1,000 children can be involved with every year 6 class in the area performing short versions of all of Shakespeare's plays.

The English Shakespeare Company and the Buttonhold Theatre Company have been booked to work in primary schools fora term, but the cost of £50 per pupil has still to be met through sponsorship. To find out more, call Mr Noble on 01793 874224.

Other budget measures include a fivefold increase in the winter fuel allowance for pensioners to £100, benefiting 13,470 pensioners in South Swindon, and an immediate allocation of additional funds for books for every school.

I continue to receive letters from constituents who are concerned about the future of the Front Garden. Because of the many complex issues involved in Swindon Council's proposal to develop this land and concerns raised by local residents, I called for it to be publicly examined independently. I was pleased that the council agreed to this so that all relevant factors can be assessed in public, and the best solution found for the town.

I continue to encourage a debate on the alternative of building more homes at higher density on currently allocated and brownfield sites. In respect of this, I warmly welcome the Government's new draft planning guidance, which states that local authorities should set minimum densities for all new developments, and advises that low-density development should be avoided.

At Westminster, I was able to ask a question on Third World debt during Prime Minister's Question Time. I highlighted the plight of millions of children in Africa, whose lives will be lost unless the debt burden that is crippling their nation's economies can be lifted. I called on the Government to cancel outright the debts of the countries committed to tackling poverty.

The Prime Minister responded by reiterating the Chancellor's recent announcement of the millennium target for debt relief of £50 billion to the world's poorest countries by the end of 2000. He also pledged the Government would lead the campaign internationally to cancel as much debt as possible.

Recently, I was delighted to attend the Swindon Young Musicians Gala Concert at the Link Centre. This thoroughly enjoyable evening celebrated the high standard of musical talent of Swindon's young people. It was also a tribute to the commitment of their teachers and of those who give up so much of their time to run orchestras and bands out of school hours.

Finally, I was also pleased to take part in the Get Swindon Reading day on 23 April and thoroughly enjoyed reading to children at Lainsmead School.

Julia Drown MP brought Charles Clarke MP, minister for education standards to Greendown School on 22 April to learn more about this winter's West Swindon Shakespeare Festival.

Downing Street date for carer After speaking out boldly about the plight of carers, Carole Rose, from Westlea, was invited to Downing Street on 29 April for a personal meeting with Treasury Minister Alistair Darling and Swindon South MP Julia Drown.

Carole found herself in the media spotlight earlier in the month when she spoke out at a national lobby of Parliament called to highlight fears about the effects of welfare benefit changes.

Government reforms mean that she, and millions of others like her, will be forced to prove whether they should be looking for work or remain eligible for benefits. Carers, the disabled, the sick, widows and those on low incomes will all be affected.

Carole acted as spokesperson not just for Mencap, of which she is a member, but for a coalition of 500 disability organisations nationally including MIND, Age Concern, the RNIB and SCOPE. Reading a prepared statement, she said, "a few weeks ago, the government claimed that carers were saving the country millions of pounds and that we needed res-

pite and backup services. The welfare reforms are a contradiction and, if the Gateway Interviews go ahead, I feel that this government doesn't trust me and that this government doesn't value the job I do."

As she prepared her severely disabled daughter, Elena, 21, for the journey to Westminster, Carole was filmed for TV and her story was also covered by BBC Wiltshire Sound and The Guardian. The glare of publicity followed two very difficult weeks during which Elena had been ill with a virus.

It's at times like these that Carole's resources are stretched to breaking point. Unable to express what is troubling her, Elena, whose difficulties include cerebral palsy and epilepsy, can become distressed. She will bang her head against walls, spit out food and drink, and have difficulty balancing. Any parent will remember how distressing such behaviour is in a small child. Elena is a fullygrown young woman.

That Carole went ahead with her speech despite this, is testament to how strongly she feels. "It was something I wanted to do personally," she said.

She is glad that she can now get back to her everyday routine of caring, though she feels the experience has taken a lot out of her.

But that's often how life is for carers.

Hopefully, Carole's return to Westminster will have been less draining. She will not be taking Elena this time, nor will she be on public display. Although she is uncertain what the meeting will bring, she expects reassurances.

What is certain is that she will not mince words about the realities of life for Britain's 6.8 million carers.

Chicks coach commended Football coach Ian Povey from Grange Park received a commendation award for his contribution to girls and ladies football at the end of March, in the Wiltshire Coach of the Year Award.

Half marathon cash for genetic disorder Four runners from Grange Park raised £600 for girls with Rett Syndromeby completing the Bath Half Marathon in late March Mandy Jenkins, Angie Roberts and their husbands Mark and Tom ran as part of a 16 strong team for Fulcrum which raised at least £2,000 for the Rett Syndrome Association UK. The syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, which leaves one in 10,000 girls profoundly and multiply disabled.

Women get visible In mid-March Swindon Racial Equality Council (SREC) hosted a groundbreaking conference to look at the barriers that prevent black and ethnic minority women achieving their potential.

The conference was the fourth major event in the last five months in the Commission for Racial Equality's (CRE) 'Visible Women' Campaign. It brought together over 100 delegates, from as far afield as Exeter and Birmingham, promoting a stimulating exchange of views.

Event chair Cherry Short, put the conference in context, saying, "research has shown that black and ethnic minority women face double discrimination on the basis of race and sex. Although they are more likely to continue into further education, they are less likely to get the jobs they want."

Needs identified during the day included: • Better publicity of the fact that

there are 37 groups in Swindon relating to ethnic minorities • Mixed cultural working groups • The development of an interagency mentoring network, • Awareness raising of the numerous dimensions of diversity • Individual empowerment and support SREC will now be putting together a full conference report and sending out a survey to establish what delegates want them to do next.

The CRE were delighted with the success of the day and will be recommending that Swindon is included as a venue for the touring Visible Women exhibition.

New free West Swindon map being drawn

Another edition of the very useful West Swindon map will be published by The Link during the summer.

The Link's salesperson Jenni Fowler has come up with a novel way of combining work at home with happy childcare.

Designed by keen Apple Macintosh user Peter Walker, the new map will be an updated and improved version of our last publication of three years ago.

This time, we are increasing the scale so that it is easier to read.

Toothill, Freshbrook and Westlea will appear on one side, with Shaw, Peatmoor/Sparcells on the other.

There will be a full street index on both sides.

Taking the stress out of sleep Parents usually want to comfort a crying baby. But when baby cries every night, for weeks and months, child, parent and family relationships can be completely wrecked.

For this reason the West Swindon health visiting team have been joined by qualified NNEB nursery nurse Tracey Gingell to provide parents with individual support and guidance.

She runs a weekly sleep clinic where parents can discuss child care and Tracey can talk to individuals about how to deal with a waking baby.

Ten month old Emily Rattenbury from Grange Park never went to bed before 11pm and used to wake 3 or 4 times a night. "It was nine months of hell; we were desperate," said mum Angela. "Tracey advised me to calm Emily in the night, not to pick her up and stop giving her drinks. After two weeks she slept right through and is much happier; me and my husband are getting a life together again."

Angela stressed that every child has different needs as do parents.

"I talk with the mums about their routines, the baby's diet and other aspects of home life. There is no

right way; we look at the problems together and work out a sleep plan."

She said that it is important for mums to talk to their health visitor if their baby is waking at night.

Pre-schools do matter, but they are closing fast As local playgroups face increasing difficulties, the Pre-school Learning Alliance (PLA) is trying to raise awareness of the importance of pre-schools, leading up to its national celebration day on 12 May, writes Gina Dennis.

Since the introduction of the voucher scheme by the last Conservative Government, primary schools keen to expand provision have been absorbing more and more under 5s into pre-reception classes. This boosts school income but is not necessarily in the best interests of the children.

Nationwide, 1,700 playgroups have closed in the last year.

Four year olds in pre-school playgroups are offered a curriculum and staff ratios suited to their needs, usually 1:6 or 1:8. Although schools have been working hard to give infant teachers training in

early years education, many children are still being taken into reception rather than nursery classes where staff ratios are much higher.

The curriculum may be less well suited to the needs of under 5s.

Space and equipment, both in the classroom and outside, may be inadequate and inappropriate.

Swindon Pre-school Development Worker Veronica Gray says, " playgroups offer not only a good pre-school education but also parental involvement. Parents who manage pre-schools find resources in themselves which enable them to go on to further education or to

What is not always realised is that parents do have the right to choose whether their children go to school, playgroup or private nursery until the term after they are five. But some parents experience peer pressure to send their child to school at 4. Many parents simply assume that going to school early will help their child get a head start, but Pat Connolly of Freshbrook playgroup says, "the vouchers can be used in playgroups; children do not have to go to school when they turn

Without playgroups, Swindon Council would be unable to deliver its promise to make education available to all 4 year olds. As numbers peak in the summer term, up to 35% of four year olds attend pre-schools rather than state schools or nurseries.

The government has acknowledged the importance of preschools and their current difficulties. Education Minister Margaret Hodge has promised a review and £500,000 is to be granted to the PLA nationally, from which local groups will benefit. In particular, the money will provide support through the Autumn term when the outflow of four year olds into school results in badly depleted numbers, and therefore creates financial problems for groups.

Computers are now a fact of life and, quite rightly, the government has been placing great emphasis on their use in schools. But, asks headteacher Keith Burke of Shaw Ridge School, "if companies can't keep up with IT developments, what can schools do?

"Like most schools, we have a wide range of computers; many are incompatible with each other. Where is our technical support coming from? And is this really what parents should be raising money for basic equipment, required as part of the core curriculum?"

Pupils at Westlea and Greendown School performed the play before Christmas, but over 500 year 6 children at seven primary schools studied the play intensively over the winter months as part of the national literacy hour requirement.

Two hundred year 7 students at Greendown also took part.

Sponsored by National Power and WH Smith, the festival included the chance to see live performances of The Tempest by the Salisbury Playhouse and a visit by Elizabethan Peddlar Jack Greene.

Sixty-seven year 5 and 6 Tregoze School children started studying the play last September. So enthusiastic were the pupils that an after school drama club met twice a week and lunchtime rehearsals started in January. Some parts had to be split to give more the chance to take centre stage.

Teacher Simon Burrell and Karen Winterburne were thrilled by the children's achievement to

put on such difficult work. "Some of the parents said they had only studied Shakespeare for GCE and were surprised that we wanted to put on The Tempest," said Simon.

"We knew it would be a challenge, but we went for it big time. It was a really hard work and we had a few sleepless nights, but the children were magnificent."

Catherine Moore, playing half the Miranda part, said, "it was really hard work; my parents helped me a lot to learn my lines."

The other Miranda, Leanne Berisford said it had been worth the effort. "It all came together and we had a lot of fun in rehearsals."

Karen Winterburne said the work on The Tempest had greatly broadened the curriculum. "The children have had the chance to look at literature and history in different ways. It's made them think about issues as well as learning facts."

Alan and Valerie Trotman, below, who own Grange Farm Nurseries at Haydon End Lane, have been left seething after viewing plans for the Haydon III development which is being considered by Swindon Council's planning committee in June.

They believe the proposal to create a bus only link between the new district centre and a roundabout adjacent to their business could ruin them. Their problems will become even more dire if the council approves plans to make Elstree Way to Westfield Way a bus only route as well.

No direct car access has been shown on the drawings, although the council has assured them a connecting road will be built eventually. Mrs Trotman said, "it is going to be much more difficult to find us. I cannot understand why the council wants to make 200 yards of road a bus only link as this will encourage people to travel further in their cars.

"Haydon Wick parish council has offered us their full support in opposing this link."

Six hundred customers have already backed Mr and Mrs Trotman by signing a petition to be delivered to Swindon council.

Volunteers Week to be big The first week in June is National Volunteers Week and Swindon Volunteers are determined to make it a big one.

Events planned for an actionpacked week include a town centre exhibition, a sponsored event linking volunteer-involving organisations, a quiz, a survey of the value of volunteers' contributions, stunts by Allied Dunbar and Intel staff and personal appearances/ celebrity volunteering.

Scrapstore appeals for van help Swindon Scrapstore no longer has the use of a Swindon Council van because the District Auditor says it is not a proper use of public money.

Sustained on a shoe string Scrapstore recycles clean, reusable waste from factories and offices to provide playgroups, schools, clubs and training organisations with low-cost materials. For the last seven years, Swindon Borough Council has provided them with its recycling van one day a week to collect and deliver materials.

Geoff Davies, Swindon waste disposal team leader, said, "the council had no alternative but to comply with the District Auditors' rulings. We would be happy to consult with Scrapstore over initiatives but it does not seem that providing transport in this way can be one of these."

Relate Swindon, the major provider of relationship counselling, will receive a full grant for six months, but only half of what it needs for the following six months, that is £12,000 of the £16,000 applied for. After this, council funding may cease altogether.

And, for the second year running, the Swindon Family Mediation Service, who help divorcing couples reach agreement over property and child custody issues, will receive no council funding.

They now need to find over £30,000 to see them through to Spring 2000.

Family mediation in most other areas is core funded by local government.

Wendy Hall of the Swindon Family Mediation Service says, "it is very unfortunate that, despite Government belief in the importance of family values, we don't receive local government support."

All divorcing couples seeking legal aid to go to court will soon have to show that they have made some attempt at mediation. A pi-

lot scheme at the Bristol mediation service has seen its workload double. Without adequate funding, there will have to be cuts in Swindon. This may well sever the lifeline that counselling provides to children whose parents are splitting up.

Relate Swindon currently has 13 fully trained counsellors and provides 45 hours of relationship counselling and psycho-sexual therapy every week. Like Wendy Hall, Manager Christine Gill stressed the way in which their work underpins the government's stated priority of support for families and children. She believes that Relate's service is often able to prevent families from making greater demands on Social Services and the Benefits systems.

Relate has been told that it will not be recommended as a funding priority for next year. But positive support from local MPs and councillors has resulted in a meeting being set up with the chair and vice chair of the community and

leisure services committee.

"I am very encouraged by the fact that the council has agreed another meeting with us," said Christine. "I hope that together we can see a way to solve the funding issue and continue to offer a full service to the people of Swindon."

St John hatchments return to historic church From May this year visitors to St Mary's Church, Lydiard Tregoze will be able to see two newly conserved memorial paintings (or hatchments as they are known), which hung in a dirty and dilapidated state in the South Chapel of the church until their removal in 1997, writes Sarah Finch-Crisp, keeper of Lydiard House.

the St John family was described in last month's issue of The Link, which announced the arrival of a replica painting of Frederick's favourite brood mare by George Stubbs.

The long suffering Charlotte was married to one of Frederick's sons George Richard, and had to endure the humiliation of her husband's notorious love affairs.
