Money is to be spent in vast quantities on celebrations, and the marketing experts are preparing to exploit the turn of the century in every way possible. But what's the reason for all the fuss asks Rev. Andrew Hethrington, team rector at Holy Trinity Church, Shaw.

e are getting nearer! It is just 1,000 days to the Millenium. What is it we will be celebrating? We know that some computers are going to have problems when the date clicks over to 2,000. They will think that we have jumped back to 1900! We've all heard about the Greenwich Exhibition, and there are other projects across the country to be funded with money from the National Lottery. But why? It's all to do with the founder of Christianity, Jesus Christ. Nobody has ever had the same impact as he has had. Our calendars recognise this and talk about this millenium as being 2,000 years after his birth. By the year 600AD, the whole known world had been so changed by his teachings that they started counting the years from his birth year. A hundred years ago at the end of the 19th Century, there was a mood of great optimism. Life was getting better, the standard of living was rising, Britain had been at peace for 50 years, half the globe was coloured red showing the extent of the empire and Britian still 'ruled the waves'. The first shat-

announce that the time has come for a new start." He made it happen then, and we changed the calendar, and he can do it again, now! Let's face up to the big challenges and not be afraid! Here's one! Lots of us face debt, but our debt is nowhere near what many African countries owe to banks. An idea from the Bible called Jubilee, cancels all debts after 50 years. Let's do that for our world in 2,000A.D. Sign the petition in one of the local churches. As for your personal debt, ask for help to get that cleared. Of course, 2,000 will be marked by celebrations, and church bells will ring out at 12noon on Saturday 1 Jan. We shall pray that God removes our anxiety and fear and fills us with love and fun! In the summer of that year, why don't we have an event in Lydiard Park? But don't wait til then. The king in England in 1,000A.D. was Ethelred the Unready! Be better prepared: join an Alpha Course in a local church to find out about the person who started it all off.

Cleft palate: a personal experience The March edition of The Link featured Dentaid, a charity trying to help children in the Ukraine who are born with cleft palates James Vernon from Grange Park was born with a cleft lip and palateNP in March 1996. Hisi mother Sue writes about how the family has coped. 'Being born with a cleft lip and palate was, and still can be, a distressing experience for us, and more recently for him as he struggles with drinking and eating some foods. He has had two operations at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford to close the gap in his lip and to reducé the gap in his palate; a further operation will be necessary. About 1 in every 600 babies are born in the UK each year with a cleft palate, and/or cleft lip, when the two halves of the palate or lip do not join in early pregnancy. It is not understood why this happens. The lips have so many basic functions - smiling, eating, drinking, kissing. The palate (roof of mouth) is important for feeding and
. speech. It is essential that repair takes place early for functional as well as cosmetic reasons. James is closely monitored at PMH and by consultants at Oxford. This high level of care will continue until he is 20 years old. He may also need further treatment to correct any hearing or dental problems as he gets older. As a family we also receive help from the local support group. The level of professional skill and care is very high in our country. Cleft lip and palate are distressing for parents and babies, but they can be treated early.' In the Ukraine, children born with cleft lip or palate are usually abandoned in orphanages with little hope of surgical attention. The Haydon Players are looking forward to a busy summer. Three productions are in rehearsal - Tom Stoppard's The Real Inspector Hound and 60's comedy Albert's Plot to be performed at Moredon Community Centre on 4 to 6 June at 730pm, and a street melodrama for the popular Old Town Victorian Festival later in June. The players would like to install permanent curtains, lighting and a stage extension at Moredon Community Centre. With their only revenue coming from ticket sales and membership fees, the message is 'support your local players'. Alan Bushel! writes The Haydon Wick Bowls Club is inviting residents of the parish to an open session. Come and play some practice ends and see if you, like the 80 or so existing members, get hooked on this increasingly popular sport. The well established club plays on the green behind the Haydon Centre on Thames Avenue. It provides sport for all levels of ability and also organises a variety of concerts and other events. Mens' Captain, Barrie Smith, stresses that it is a mixed club for all ages. "Most members are new to the game, so no-one need feel awkward. We have mens and ladies league teams and we play mixed friendlies and have a range of club tournaments. The green is open to members seven days a week for those who who prefer an informal 'roll-up'." The open sessions are on Wednesday 7 May, 7pm to 8.30pm, and Sunday 11 May, 3pm to 5pm. Just turn up with flat shoes or trainers; woods will be supplied. Water workers dig in for pond study Volunteers from Thames Water came to the help of Haydon Wick primary school in April to dig out an old pond and install a much larger one. Using a digger to shift the heavy clay, the volunteer staff carefully transferred plant life and frog spawn into a new environment. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust holds its of healthy physical activity to break the record set in Belfast six major fundraising event of the year years ago on Get ACTIVE Day - Wednesday 18 June. on Sunday 4 May, and they want even more people to take part. The Sarsen Trail and Neolithic Marathon walks between Avebury and Stonehenge is a chance to raise money for the environment as well as a chance to see some of the finest downland country in Britain. There are three sections from 11 to 25 miles to choose from. The Trust manages 30 nature reserves across Wiltshire and the walk, with support from BT for the ninth year, funds much of its work. Canal side walk The Swindon Branch of the Wilts and Berks Canal Amenity Group is holding a sponsored walk on Sunday 1 June, starting at 9am. The walk follows the line of the North Wilts Canal starting in Cricklade and finishing in Swindon town centre behind Mcllroys. Computers Don't Bite This is the name of a week long public information campaign to be run by the BBC between 18 and 24 May. Aimed at the 13 million people, aged mainly between 25 and 45, who claim to be baffled and bemused by computers, the campaign will raise awareness of the increasing dependency of society on information technology.
The campaign will consist of a wide range of specially made programmes about computers and technology, including the start of a 6 part beginner's guide to computers and a documentary on the Internet . 'hands on' sessions in shopping centres around the country, including Swindon's Brunel Centre • try out sessions in pubs (at the Deers Leap in Penhill, Swindon) • a hot line for people who want to know more about computers.
BBC Executive Producer Mike Flood-Page said the campaign will be a good for those who are not confident about technology. "There are magazines and specialist television and radio programmes for the IT experts, but very little for people who know they want to learn about computers, yet don't know where to start. "We want to help the people who feel they are being left behind by giving them the confidence to take the first steps.
Capturing the faces of Swindon A major photography display takes place in the Brunel shopping centre between 9 and 14 June, and the organisers want the people of the town to provide the content.
Each participant will be asked to submit a role of film of 24 photographs in three main categories • A day in the life on Friday 16 May: photos to be taken at two hour intervals - eating, working, watching TV, etc. • My favourite things: items which give an insight into the hopes and aspirations of Swindonians.

Calling 'all the young dudes' Writes avid Mott The Hoople fan David Pike from Grange Park Ex-Mott The Hoople front man Ian Hunter appears at the Wyvern Theatre on Sunday 18 May in his nationwide tour to promote a new album, The Artful Dodger. This is a rare opportunity to see a talented song writer, musician, producer and master showman. From 1969 to the mid 1970's Mott The Hoople produced nine albums. Ian Hunter, together with Mick Ralphs, wrote the majority of the songs, and was lead singer, pianist, vocalist forthe band. Their early music was gutsy rock 'n roll, Hunter is/was a fan of Jerry Lee Lewis. In the 1970s Mott had a number ofhitsingles, including All the Young Dudes, (penned by Bowie), Roll Away The Stone, Honalochie Boogie, The Golden Age of Rock N' Roll... I remember watching Mott at Oxford during the 1970's, Queen were the support band and were good - Mott were excellent. Mott The Ian Hunter band played to also supported Bowie during an early American tour - an impatient packed auditoriums in the USA unruly crowd wanted to see Bowie, during the 1980's, videos were a bottle was thrown at Mick Ralphs produced etc. Hunter has been a striking his guitar. Youngsters at Greendown School got into the charitable spirit last term and raised loads of money for three different causes. Danielle Moore organised the Barnardos 'Ribbon of Hope' appeal and raised £750, and over £1,000 was raised on Red Nose Day in a variety of wild and wacky antics, from indoor abseiling, to shaving the local vicar, to a lunch time talent show. Just before Easter Kris Akabusi from Super Schools put students through the paces and £1,200 was raised to help develop facilities for stars of the future. Ideally we should all accept our pale skin, but I know that this is unrealistic. However there are now very good products on the

'It is never too early to get the sun safety message: don't burn up, cover up.' Skin cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK. In 1993, the most recent local figures available, 76 cases of malignant melanoma were recorded for Wiltshire with 13 deaths in that year from the disease. The good news is that according to the UK Skin Cancer Working Party, four out of five cases of skin cancer are preventable. But it is worth remembering that prevention is always better than cure. Because the main cause of skin cancer is exposure to ultra-violet radiation, mainly sunlight, it is important that people modify their behaviour in the sun and Sc) prevent this sometimes fatal disease.

Bigger flower festival planned
Vicar hears call to move Reverend Rob Buries, vicar of St Mary's, Lydiard Park, which serves Freshbrook, Grange Park and Hook, has announced that he will be leaving in September. After six years in West Swindon he will become team rector in the Park and Walcot area of the town. "I had not intended a move, but after approaches by the parish of Parks and Walcot, I felt God was asking me to go there," he said. "I feel sad to leave, but the church is in good heart with a thriving membership. We will be able to keep in contact with all our family friends as we won't be far away."
Preparations are well underway for June's Flower Festival at St Mary's Church in Lydiard Park. The church will be decorated with lovely flower displays organised by church members, on the theme 'Women of the Bible', and local schools will be contributing art work. The church will be open from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 June. The Summer Fayre on Saturday 28 June will be bigger and better than ever with more stalls and attractions.
