Club heads for top level football Excitement is rising across the town as Swindon Town football club prepare for their end of season play-off campaign during May to achieve a place in the Premier League.
Inside this month's Link the candidates for the Wiltshire County Council elections tell you why you should vote for them. The elections take place only every four years, so take the chance while you canto vote for the people you think will represent your interests best. Election ward boundaries have changed in West Swindon once again to reflect the growth in the area since the last elections in 1989. Freshbrook and Grange Park stay the samebuttheToothil Ward has been split so that Toothill and Westlea (with Eastleaze) form one. The new Roughmoor Ward covers the whole of Shaw (including Ramleaze, Middleleaze and Nine Elms), Sparcells and Peatmoor. Maurice Fanning regained one of the three Toothill Ward seats on Thamesdown Borough Council for the Labour Party at the bye-election on 1 April He will represent the old ward boundary which includes Toothill, Westlea, Shaw, Sparcells and Peatmoor.

Youth needs dented by county cut The end of March saw the loss of one of West Swindon's three youth workers employed by Wiltshire County Council. Carl Bowen, who was well known to teenagers in the area has taken a post in Somerset and his job has been cut from the budget West Swindon has the highest concentration of teenagers in the town. The number of teenagers in the area is rising and will continue as youngsters born in the area as it has expanded grow up. The cutting of the post could create big problems for the community. But that's all in the past and the team's progress from seventh in the First Division when Ross returned from a long injury to third spot has been steady. 'We've worked hard for each other and played attractive football," said Ross. "There's a really good feeling in the team. It counts for so much if you're doing well and riding a crest of the wave. "I think the fans are getting a bit anxious. There's a lot of interest
and there are always people in the car park wanting to talk to you, even at this late stage of the season." Ross is well known at Shaw's Brook Field School where he often dropsoff his childrenlan and Kirsty on his way to training. Other parents have been giving him lots of encouragement he said. Marketing Manager Janet Garrett from Whittington Road, Westlea said everybody at the club was trying to keep calm but the atmosphere was becomingelectric. "The team visited the old people's hospital in Stratton recently and it was just fantastic to see the wards decorated in town colours. Everybody felthumbled. The town might be missing some attractions, but we have a first class football team and community pride is starting to reveal itself once again." SwindonTown's last regularseason home game against West Ham will be televised live on ITV on 2 May and the play-off games take place in the second half of the month.
