First baby celebrates 15th year On 14 March 1976 the Davies family were the first to arrive in Swindon's 'western expansion area,' green fields, building sites and no facilities at all. A month later their daughter Janice was born and fifteen years later, still living in the same house in Markenfield, Toothill, the family celebrated her fifteenth birthday on 16 April. Janice, who attended Toothill Primary and is now a fourth year student at Greendown School, is pictured right with mum and dad Terry and Teresa Davies.

Cafe society aims to offer good food to young people An exciting new project is being planned which will bring together under 25's with nothing to do during the day. Called the Grub Club, the project will be a weekly lunch club for younger people in the community and is the idea of a group of women living in Toothill. Michelle Sutton, one of the organisers said that young mums, the unemployed and people on low incomes are very restricted in what they can do. They can also become isolated from other people. "There must be lots of young people around during the day who would like to get together over a meal. We want to offer a good food at low cost, along with the chance to meet and make friends." A creche will be run alongside the lunch club to give young mothem a break. "Mums often don't have time to eat a decent meal during the day; its sometimes late in the evening and cold," said Tammy Cowdrey. Toothill Neighbourhood Worker Miriam Minty, who is helping the group, said Grub Club is aimed at both men and women. "It will be a cooperative venture which involves some of the members planning the menus, buying the food

and cooking it." She added that when the project is off the ground special events and trips could be organised. The group is looking fora venue to hold Grub Club and would also welcome the help of older people with experience in catering and child care. People interested injoiningGrub Club, or helping to organise it, can contact Miriam Minty on 877083.

Proud Tim leads Town out

Tim Gibson, ready for his big day

A long wait comes to an end on Saturday 27 April when 10 year old Tim Gibson from Grange Park leads out Swindon Town as team mascot. Tim won a competition run last summer by DewhurstThe Butcher, The Link magazine and the West Swindon Centre. We asked entrants to draw or paint a picture celebrating Swindon's magnificent success in the play-offs for a Division One placing. How things change in less than a year. From the verge of the first division to keeping away from the relegation zone, the Town's fortunes have swung. But Tim's not put off by the team's performance. His dad took him to Wembley last year and he goes to the County Ground as often as possible. He's out every evening playing football in the street or the local open space. Tim says he's been practicising hard for the outing. "I'm really looking forward to walking out with the team and also being able to take a few shots at Fraser Digby. I'm hoping they will good enough to beat him." Next month we'll publish a photo of Tim on his big day.
