Nepal orphanage thriving with Swindon support

Highworth residents Rosa and Ian Matheson who started a charity to help a former sherpa care for a houseful of children in 2009 have returned from their fourth visit to Kathmandu more determined than ever to find new ways to raise money to sustain the positive difference that has been made to the children’s lives. In the last two years they have found and furnished a new house in the country’s capital for Angel, his wife and their adopted children and helped them attend school. Roof refurb for Link Centre

Swindon Borough Council's cabinet has agreed a major investment to replace the Link Centre’s roof at a cost of £1.1 million. The building, which marked its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2010, has leaked to some degree from the day it opened in 1985, but over the last five years many more buckets to catch rain water have been in evidence during heavy rain as the roof has aged. Coun Nick Martin, who lobbied the cabinet for the money said the funds would be underwritten from future earnings. "Link Centre is a much enjoyed capital asset which obviously cannot be allowed to deteriorate for want of maintenance. After 25 years any maintenance or patch up work was almost doing more damage than it was repairing. “Visitors expect to be able to use the facility in the dry and we need to continue to attract them in large numbers. Even in difficult economic times, the council has a strong commitment to providing a good quality leisure experience." Fellow West Swindon councillor Steve Wakefield congratulated coun Martin for securing the council's agreement. "Nick's done a really good job and deserves a pat on the back for ensuring Link Centre has a long future catering for leisure users and sports people.”

Link Centre manager Carole Jamieson welcomed the decision. "We've only had to cancel the occasional activity like a badminton session or a tea dance in the community hall because of the leaks, but buckets collecting water drips certainly gave a poor impression. "The whole ambience of Link Centre will change and West Swindon residents and the people of the town can now be confident in the knowledge that the centre will continue to be a major sports and leisure attraction." Former Thamesdown Council architect Nigel Honor, who designed the building, said, “the superstructure can last for 150 years but everything else can be repaired and renewed. It’s good to know the council continues to believe in Link Centre.” It is expected that the repair will take place during the summer.

Attack dog owner arrested

The January Link reported a horrific incident at Shaw Centre when a vicious cross breed dog attacked a thirteen year old Staffordshire bull terrier bitch when its owner removed its muzzle just a few yards away. The dogs were separated by two brave staff from Shaw Vet, the Staffie suffered a broken tail requiring about £5,000 worth of surgery. The story generated considerable comment and concern around Shaw. After The Link had gone to press the police identified the owner of the attack dog from CCTV. PC Tom Turner said, “the owner is known to the police and his animal was an American Pit Bull licensed under the Dangerous Dog Act. However, because of the incident, he was arrested and appeared in court at the end of January and the dog removed to police kennels. The owner was found guilty but has appealed.”

In November police appealed for information on criminals stealing lead from four West Swindon Primary Schools, now they are warning householders to be vigilant for thieves stripping lead flashing from house porches and garage roofs. There have been reports from all over Swindon and in particular homes at Beverley in Toothill. Crest to conduct North Swindon Tadpole Farm consultation in March

Housing developers Crest Nicholson will be holding a series of meetings and displays on their proposals to build around 1,700 houses and provide five hectares of employment land, community facilities and major open space areas for public use at Tadpole Farm.

Swindon Borough Council has included the site, north of Oakhurst and Redhouse, in its Core Strategy for forward planning. In February the developers met with ward councillors and representatives of Blunsdon Parish Council, Haydon Wick Parish Council, Redhouse Residents’ Association, Oakhurst Residents’ Association and Rodbourne Cheney Residents’

Over 300 letters and e-mails were sent to Wiltshire Council by the 11 February deadline objecting to the Taylor Wimpey proposal to build 800 houses to the north of West Swindon at Ridgeway Farm. Additionally a petition raised by Purton environmental group Purton Ps & Qs signed by 630 people calling for Wiltshire planning committee to reject the application was submitted. Children’s Project annual meeting

Council scheme aims to get a better deal for people

Rogue traders seem to be a fact of life, they even have a dedicated TV programme, but to reduce the likelihood of residents being caught by the few bad apples, Swindon Borough Council Trading Standards Service has joined a network of local authorities to administer a trader approval scheme called Buy With Confidence.

It’s been around for ten years but Swindon Council launched a local scheme last October. Joint coordinator Lara Hill said, “Buy With Confidence invites businesses who believe they are at the top of their game to apply to become members. A grant of 22,000 Euros has been awarded to Isambard for the two year project which will help widen pupils’ cultural horizons. Assistant head Kirsty Carter, who is one of the teachers who travelled to Germany, said “the exchange will involve between 15 and 20 Isambard pupils visiting the Dr Klaus Schmidt Hauptschule in Salzgitter for ten days in June 2012. The project will focus on local history and digital photography, and STEAM museum will be involved. “Part of the project will be to design a bi-lingual website through

which students can share information, photos and opinions, and which will provide Isambard with an excellent means of launching our German language provision.” The exchange pupils from years 9, 10 and 11 have not yet been selected, and will be expected to submit a creative application demonstrating why they should be part of the programme. Planning continues in March when German teachers visit Isambard, followed by the arrival of the Hauptschule pupils for ten days in October.

Swindon Town FC Study Centre has closed down its County Ground learning suite after 12 years delivering a popular IT service to adults and schools, due to the withdrawal of the government’s Playing for Success grant. Director of the centre Martin Turnbull said, “there was great disappointment with the news that the study centre would no longer operate at its current premises after the end of February. “The sad thing is that we were never given a chance to cut costs or operate on a reduced budget. Festival to bring Toothill community together

Community groups based in Toothill are combining with Toothill Primary School to hold a community celebration to mark the award of £1 million to the area from the National Lottery Big Local Project. Details of the community festival on Saturday 7 May are being worked on but will include a wide range of fun and games, information and advice stalls organised at the school, in Toothill Church and the community centre.

Community cafe returns to original location

After an 18 month break following the closure of Freshbrook Community Centre, the community cafe reopens in the centre on Wednesday 2 March, 9.30am to 1.30pm. Phil Yalden, a McTimoney Chiropractor based in West Swindon will be speaking at the US Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC) prestigious Research Agenda Conference in Las Vegas in March. Phil said, “it is an honour to be invited to present at this prestigious international conference, where leading practitioners meet to discuss chiropractic research and education. Tami wants to fight cancer with vitamin C treatment

Tami Brown, 27, from Abbey Meads, has been told the cancer she has fought off for seven years is now terminal - but she’s not giving up her search for a cure and is hoping Swindon will help her raise £5,000. She needs to quickly raise the money to try out an alternative therapy called High-Dose Intravenous Vitamin C Therapy. Based on research by Noble Prize winner Dr Linus Pauling there is a lot of reported success in the USA and New Zealand. Tami believes this treatment could give her more time on this earth. “I’ve done months of research into this new treatment since I heard about it before Christmas. It’s by no means a definite cure and may just extend my life, but the theory and positive success stories suggest it could work, and that’s good enough for me to want to give it a go. Revolution gets Swindon’s ultra athlete ready for Death Valley run

Sports therapist Adam Dobson is preparing Swindon’s running man Mike Buss for another series of ultimate runs in his quest to raise £250,000 by the end of this year. In 2010 Mike broke 14 world records in 12 months, including running the greatest distance in 7 days (517.25 miles). On 18 March he sets off on another extraordinary set of challenges - running 3,200 miles in three continents. He starts with the 6633 Arctic Ultra, covering 120 miles in minus 40ºC, then, a week later, runs the 256k Marathon des Sables in Morocco, before heading for Death Valley, USA where he aims to become the first person to run 100 marathons in 100 days carrying a 40lb pack in temperatures of 50ºC.

Cameron McGiffin from Oakhurst is seeking help to secure his place as an up and coming international ice hockey player. During March and April he plays for England at under 15s tournaments in France and Latvia and has been selected to play for the SouthWest England Conference Regional Team in May which showcases players aiming to be selected for England and Great Britain teams in higher age categories. There is no funding at junior levels and players have to rely on parents and their own fundraising to progress. Cameron has received personal sponsorship for his Swindon Ice Hockey Academy under 16 Leopards shirt from Hanif Robani of the Bombay Lounge. Richard Britton, 65, will be showing how fit he is at West Swindon’s Mad March Hare around Lydiard Park on 27 March when he takes on his first serious run, following a year working out with fitness trainer Les Slinn after being given the cancer all clear. He was diagnosed with non-hodgekins lymphoma in 2004 and went through chemotherapy to deal with two tumours. Richard, right, said, “when I started with Les I could barely do thirty seconds on the treadmill; now I’m up to 20 minutes and looking forward to 5k around the park.” Les said the rehabilitation work was long and steady. “We took it very slowly to build up Richard’s upper body and leg strength, but he’s done brilliantly and we’re now mitment to inner healing through looking at climbing Mount Kili- Reiki. Girls put on a show

Four friends presented a £65 cheque to the Swindon branch of the RSPCA after organising and performing a Christmas concert at the Haydon Centre.

Tia Thomas, 11, Jasmine Key, 12, Lauren Munro, 12 and Summer Tsokos, 11 put on the show with Tia and Jasmine choreographing and directing the show, as well as making the props. There was a mixture of songs, dance, puppetry as well as audience participation, and a solo from Summer. Refreshments, lucky dip and a raffle added to the total.

A dedicated group of volunteers from North Swindon have won the title of ‘Fundraising Team of the Year’ in leading veterinary charity PDSA’s annual Volunteer Awards.

We’re all extremely passionate about pets and are honoured to be helping to raise vital funds for such a worthy cause. Haydonleigh gains eco-qualification

Children at Haydonleigh Primary School held an environmental day in February which finally secured the prestigious Green Flag Award.
