I have woken on a Sunday morning to find cars in my street with rocks through rear windows, and wing mirrors smashed off. In light of all this, when was the last time that you saw a police car driving through the housing estates or village centres, let alone a police officer walking the beat? These were always a rare sight, and are all the more rare now that the police station at Westlea has closed. You are more likely to see an officer parked on the Thamesdown Drive trying to catch people exceeding the 40mph speed limit. When one does have any contact with the police they are both polite and professional, but their profile as a deterrent to crime is far from adequate. A visible police presence is required to make criminals think twice before committing a crime. Taking two hours to turn up when a member of the public reports a break in at a West Swindon church demonstrates an inability to respond effectively let alone be perceived as a deterrent. The Inspector in charge of West Swindon recognises there is a shortage and has applied for twenty Police Community Support Officers. Unfortunately we will be lucky to see them on our streets before 2008.

Pupils decide to take community action Youngsters at Greendown Community School are so disgusted with the state of West Swindon that they are planning to take direct action to tidy it up. Working with Freshbrook Church y outh worker Dave Davison some 50 youngsters have volunteered to form an action group to carry out community cleanups with the support of other agencies, like the police, council community wardens, Swindon Youth for Christ and Millennium Volunteers. Year 8 pupil Joanna Roberts joined the project after Dave took an assembly. "He told us the story of the good chav who cared about his community and said everybody is responsible for keeping it tidy." Lianne Rayner said, "a lot of us are angry at the strories in newspapers which make Greendown pupils responsible for all the bad things going , on in the I..-. area. A lot of s want dot h'mgs E..make our communit y better." Dave is pleased with the enthusiastic response. "Young people feel frustrated by the way they are seen. They are often blamed for the ills of society but it's very unfair to lump all teenagers under the category of trouble makers or 'a problem.' "They are responsible people who want to contribute to the place that many will still be living in when they are adults and bringing up their own children." Rather than community action being organised as a top down project Dave wants the ideas to come from the children who will write letters to the council and seek

The future of the Swindon Sanctuary sexual assault referral centre at Taw Hill Medical Centre could shut at the end of March unless Swindon Primary Care Trust comes up with the cash to keep it going. He explained that the catchment areas had to be reconsidered as houses were built on sites nearer the schools. Coun Perkins added, "we've learned from the Northern Sector development. We need to work with the developers to ensure that this doesn't happen again. I think we have got it right in Priory Vale where two primaries open in September to cater for the growing population." Parents will find out if they have a place in their preferred schools when letters are sent out on 16 March. Special provisions are in place for families with a sibling already attending a North Swindon school. With the extra places available at the new Red Oaks primary at Redhouse and Orchid Vale primary at Hayden End it remains to be seen whether children from Groundwell will gain places in schools of their choice. Once places have been allocated parents can appeal. The admissions office at Swindon LEA can provide information on places available at other schools and will work with parents to help them find a school they are happy with. Parents can also place their child's name on a waiting list if their preferred school is oversubscribed. Abbey Meads councillor Justin Tomlinson said many residents were faced with the catchment area problem. "Each and every parent should be free to have the school of their choice and not be bound by unrealistic catchment areas."

Three governors of Red Oaks Primary School on the Learning Campus in Redhouse, Priory Vale, accompanied by headteacher Terri Menham, were given a conducted tour of the site by builders Laing Construction and PFI site managers Equion in February. Chair of governors Jill Bourne said the visit brought home how close opening day is. "As governors we've been talking about the school and looking at the plans for months but to actually stand in Red Oaks was fantastic. It's an exciting time with both the building and our ideas for the school taking shape quickly. Our expectations are high and we can't wait to welcome our first children and their parents through our doors." Peatmoor Primary School headteacher Terri Menham will move to the Red Oaks headship in April. She is experienced at launching new schools having opened Peatmoor in 1999. Explaining how the name for the school was arrived at, Jill said the governors wanted one which

was distinctive and easily remembered, whilst making a link between its Redhouse location and the idea of children growing strong through education. The other new school to open in September is Orchid Vale Primary in Hayden End which has been named after the rare orchid which grows at the nearby Site of Special Scientific Interest, and is incorporated in the logo used to promote the Priory Vale housing development. Nursery places available In the February Link we did not make it clear that there will also be a nursery class at Orchid Vale.

Moredon looks forward to new school The new primary school for the Moredon area, to open in September, will see the merging of the infant and junior schools that have served the area for over 30 years. To be called , Moredon Primary and Nursery School, it will be led by the current head of the

junior school Lauren Connor. Ian Cooke, chair of the temporary governing body, said there is a mounting sense of anticipation in the area. "This is a really exciting development for the whole community. The parents, staff and governors fought successfully to have the new school situated north of the current site with access from Moredon Road. "It brings the school closer to the heart of the community and makes access easier and safer for parents and pupils." Hi-tech boost for Bradon Bradon Forest has improved its standing in the use of information and communications technology (ICT) by being one of the first 100 in the UK to receive the prestigious new ICT Mark. The new quality mark, awarded by Becta, the government's lead agency for ICT in education, recognises schools which demonstrate they use ICT to support all learners and all school activities. The award was made after Bradon was one of the twenty schools asked to pilot Becta's self"0 review framework which helps schools create and implement plans to ensure they use ICT effectively. When Charmaine Watts was weaning her daughter Leyla, she didn't want to use mass produced jars or tinned food and decided to make her own purees. She found shopping, cooking, making purees and freezing very time consuming, but it gave her an idea. "I realised that if I was working, I simply wouldn't be able to prepare the quality food I wanted for my child." To help time pressured parents, Charmaine has set up Pure Pots for Tots with her mum Lynda who has food handling and hygiene training. Together, they cook and freeze the organic baby food at

home. The recipes are cooked to order and delivered in the Swindon area.

Chairmaine added, "I've been speaking to parents who need to

send prepared meals into nursery but don't have time to cook. Others have the problem that their toddler won't eat the same as the adults which means extra cooking. The selection of food ranges from tiny blocks of puree for introducing first tastes to more adventurous toddler meals. The service is not just for children at home. Local nurseries are in discussion with Charmaine about supplying their meals and she hopes that this will mean that more children can enjoy tasty and healthy homemade food. Crisis hits multi-cultural festival The Mela. one of the highlights of Swindon's calendar might have to be severely cut back after NatWest withdrew sponsorship for this year's event on Saturday 29 July. After heated argument the farm on Bodiam Drive was saved for community use and on 1 April it will be transferred into the ownership of the council's youth service. Club secretary Mavis Reed said the success of the campaign which was supported by local councillors Mary Martin and Steve Wakefield, was a great relief. "A year ago we were fearing eviction, but we'd like to thank the local councillors for helping us resolve the problems about the farm and give our club a future." The 7 to 11 year olds club has met on Friday evenings for over 14 years. Now the farm is secure, a Wednesday evening session for 11 to 15 year olds, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, has been launched. After a pilot scheme in the Autumn and thanks to a £7,000 Central Government grant from the Local Network Fund, administered

by the Community Foundation for Wiltshire and Swindon, the 11 Plus Project will have funding for twelve months. There's pool, table tennis and music during term time and the club will be open during day times in the holidays. Toothill councillor Steve Wakefield said, "Mavis and her volunteer helpers have tremendous commitment to young people and they demonstrated the value of the farm as a community resource. Everybody involved in the campaign to save the farm should be thanked." Children who want to join should visit the club with a parent to register membership. • A £500 grant from the Cairns Charitable Trust paid for 40 members of the junior club to have an evening out with a meal at the Kidz Aloud indoor adventure

A day in the life.., in ministering to the community Rev Mike Haslam is the new Church of England minister responsible for North Swindon, covering the St Francis Worship Centre in Taw Hill, the Church of Blunsdon St Andrew and works closely with the Church

of Christ the Servant, Abbey Meads. By way of an introduction he describes a day in his busy schedule. Yesterday finished at 1.30am, trying to sort service rotas, marriage preparation material, conference planning and I can't remember what else. It was another late night and recently there have been too many. Today starts grumpily at Gam when I tell the children to stop making so much noise. It continues in the same vein, through breakfast and the school run / walk. It's so bad that, once I get my act

together, I buy the children some chocolates and my wife some flowers to make up. At 9.15am I enter the maze of Priory Vale and visit a couple to talk about their wedding. We have around twenty weddings a year at St Andrews and I love doing them. One of the great things about the service is that it's the couple who marry each other; all I'm there to do is help two very nervous people say the right words. I manage to fit in a brief first visit to Bridlewood School to fix up a time to return. Then I drop off a certificate and gift for a baby boy I baptised the day before. I still find it bizarre driving around Priory Vale: you pass Victorian town houses, Georgian terraces Regency avenues all in three minutes. St Andrew's Ridge is another maze but I find my way to another wedding visit. And then I take an hour out and go to the gym at the district centre where I bump into two of the people I've already visited in the morning. The Year 3 children at St Francis School have written themselves invitations to the Baptism of Rosie (the name they have given to one of my daughter's dolls). They come up to St Andrews and it's good to show them round the church and to 'baptise' the doll (without getting too wet). Back home, running late, to pick up the children from school. It's then a familiar balancing act of spending time with them, trying to work and cooking tea.

Bath, stories, prayers and bed for the children and then at 7.30pm I' m out again for another Baptism visit, one of forty to be done each year. It's an amazing opportunity to meet people, share faith and welcome them into the community of the church.

The rest of the evening is taken up with preparing for the meeting of our Church Council the next day. I want to share some of my vision for North Swindon, stuff around creating community, sharing faith and allowing our lives to be transformed by the love of God. I certainly don't have all the answers about how we actually do all of that. gelical Church will be looking at the very core of the Christian faith, and what it is that the Bible defines as Christianity. We won't be able to reduce it to fifty words, but during the five weeks we will look at: 1 The Biblical view of God. 2 What the Bible has to say about mankind.

3 Who is Jesus Christ? 4 Why all this emphasis on the cross? 5 What does it mean to believe? A few weeks' ago Channel4 gave two programmes to Prof. Richard Dawkins to declare his beliefs (or lack of them). His much-publicised conclusion was that those who believe in God have a view that is 'intellectually pathetic, puny and measly.' What he didn't tell you is that around half of the world's scientists believe in God! - who dares call them 'intellectually pathetic?' People in Ash Brake living close to a controversial development site off Thamesdown Drive are generally in agreement with a proposal by the Mitchell & Butler chain to build an Ember Inn there. Residents with support from local councillor Justin Tomlinson successfully campaigned against two proposals for fast food drive-in outlets over the last few years. The Ember Inn brand offers a more adult orientated child free environment, whilst its sister chain Toby Carvery, with an outlet opposite the Thamesdown Drive site on Lady Lane, caters for the family market. Coun Tomlinson said, "on the whole the Ember Inn proposal has been received extremely well, with the exception of the over 14s rule for children. Ash Brake is predominately a family area, and therefore I have now officially requested they review this policy. We are keen to have a community facility which everybody can enjoy."

Stephanie Exell has campaigned for two years to ensure that the field containing the rare green winged orchids and great crested newts is protected. And although the field next to Southwold Close was always designated for development, Stephanie wants the number of houses proposed reduced. She said, "as more houses are built, the pressure on the field becomes greater. A lower density of housing would help protect the field which will soon be almost surrounded by new housing." A Management Plan for the field was signed in September 2005 with the North Swindon Development Company, Swindon Council and the land owner Mr Clifford agree-

ing with English Nature, which oversees SSSI, on how the area should be preserved from human interference. This includes maintaining and strengthening hedgerows, building dog proof fences and signage to explain why people should keep out. But Stephanie is very conce rn ed that this has yet to be implemented. "I want the agreed ma n . agement plan being followed before any more building takes place so that everybody is clear about the need to protect the site, and residents know they have something very special in their midst. Discover the latest at Shaw Forest Community tree plant day Sunday 19 March, 10am - 3pm Here's a chance to take part in the fourth Shaw Forest tree plant and discover how the park has been developing since 1994.

The November tree plant organised by the Great Western Community Forest team was washed out by monsoon rains, so go along and find out what's been taking place over the winter months. Since September contractors have planted over 2,000 trees, installed new gas venting and leachate drainage systems and prepared an events field. By the summer a car park will be completed as well as new footpaths. The events open space will be grass seeded and an area where people can plant memorial trees will be identified. The arrangements for this year's tree plant, sponsored by Nationwide Building Society and Intel, are different from previous tree plants. Go along to Peatmoor Community School hall between 10am and 2.30pm to book a tree and take

the free shuttle bus the short distance to the park. Some 500 trees need to be planted, as well as wildflower plug plants and flower seeds. Plans will be on display at the school as well as stalls organised by a range of groups including the Shaw Forest Protection Group. There will also be environmental and fun activities like making bug homes and wild bird feeders. The Forest Cafe will be open as well. Bring your own spade, wrap up warm and wear wellies. Children mustbe accompanied by a responsible adult throughout the day and dogs must be kept on a lead. Local visitors are asked to walk or cycle to Peatmoor School. Car parking is limited. Brook Field children boost birdlife outside classroom Year 3 classes at Brook Field Primary School have been feeding birds in the school's wildlife area to help with their science, writing and computer studies. Teacher Jacquie Adams said the children have been looking at ways of attracting more birdlife, the aim of the project being to develop interest, ownership and responsiblity for the environment around them. "One of the problems we identified was that birds were not visiting the two bird tables close to our building because there was no food for them. Oxfam wants to know what young people think

Anna Hirsch-Holland from Shaw is a member of the Oxfam Youth Board which is made up of volunteer 16 to 24 year olds and acts as a sounding board for issues which are important to young people today. She's looking for help and writes:

As a member of this board, I have been appointed to undertake some research in schools to assess the attitudes of 11-16 years olds on global issues and global citizenship. The information collected will be very useful for Oxfam to help inform their development education strategy for schools in the UK. This provides a framework which schools andeachers can choose to follow in order to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to allow them to challenge inequality, discrimination, and stereotypes of people, as well as encouraging them to take action for a fairer and more equitable world. I have a short questionnaire which I'd like secondary school pupils to fill out, investigating their attitudes and beliefs to global issues surrounding the education of global citizenship in schools. I would encourage as many pupils as possible to fill in this questionnaire, in order to help Oxfam with its valuable work.
