Volunteers needed to make Mela another success After much confusion in early May, Swindon Mela will take place, following agreement between Swindon Council and the organising committee which had earlier announced it was cancelling this year’s event because of new limits on attendance numbers. Clifford Meadow not open to the public

The story in the May Link about the status of Haydon Meadow Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Oakhurst should have made clear that the site is privately owned land.

The Clifford family have farmed the 16 acre meadow using traditional management methods for several generations, allowing grass and wildflowers to grow in time for mid-summer hay making before cattle are allowed in to graze the pasture. It has never been ploughed and as a result has one of the few populations of green winged orchids in Britain. In 2001 the field was designated an SSSI by Natural England. However it continues to be owned by the Cliffords and there is no right of way to enter the meadow or walk dogs. Residents are asked to respect the ownership of the land and also its delicate environment

In a response to the parish council Secretary of State for Transport the Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin wrote: “The cost of building the proposed link road would likely be over £5m and would therefore be classed as a local major transport scheme. “The Department of Transport has already committed to a programme for delivering local major transport schemes over the period of the spending review. Therefore the case of a new link road could not be considered for funding before 2015. Beyond 2015 it is the Government’s intention to devolve both funding and decision making for local major transport schemes to local transport bodies. A story before bed is supposed to calm children for sleep, but an evening with renowned local children’s author Neil Griffiths on Wednesday 12 June at Red Oaks Primary School is sure to keep under fives excited well beyond their bedtime. Neil’s stories are full of intrigue and wonder, and usually involve audience participation. He’s been invited by Butterflies Children’s Centre in North Swindon to show parents in the locality how valuable it is to read to children, especially as a way of ending the day and sending them to sleep. The society’s buildings and works spokesman Dave Peacey said: “We have to wait for the Environment Agency to complete their wildlife survey on the site before we can go ahead and commission the line and the platform. It’s all built, but we are not able to carry any passengers along the stretch until all the official checks have been made.” The extension to Taw Valley Halt will mean trains will be able to complete a six-mile round trip, as opposed to the current four miles.

The next stage in the project of bringing the line south into Mouldon Hill will be a planning application to build a permanent station in the country park, to open hopefully in time for the fortieth birthday. Dave is optimistic and said a lot of effort had gone into getting the track extended to the temporary platform at Taw Valley Halt. “Members have worked really hard to get to this point; there are a lot of people with their chest puffed out at the moment and they should be congratulated.”

Photo: Jac Bingle Presenter Nick Grimshaw and his crew came to Swindon on a tour of towns that had hosted the BBC Big Weekend, in advance of this year's event in Londonderry on 13 May. It was four years to the day when up and coming boy band JLS had students jumping at a performance in nearby Nova Hreod School, just before the Swindon BBC Big Weekend on 10 May 2009. Only 300 students were able to take part in the show due to the capacity of the hall, a quarter of the school's 1,200 roll.

The rest had to attend classes, but, as well as concentrating on their teachers, they were able to listen to the programme through the Isambard wi-fi network. Youngsters were interviewed by Nick Grimshaw and took part in a pupils versus teachers forfeit quiz. Naturally the teachers lost and Mrs Bulpitt, Mr Ward and Mr Jones put on a spirited Gangnam Style dance. There were live performances by Little Mix and Bastille. Year 9s Rachel, Tiffany and Hannah were the only three students who

had thought of making a banner and were rewarded by having their picture taken with Little Mix. Hannah said: "We had kept our banner secret so that others wouldn't copy the idea. It was great to meet up with Little Mix." Headteacher Rachel Mattey was delighted by how the morning went. "The students who formed the audience have received no behaviour logs this year, so it was great to be able to reward them. It's just a pity that space limitations meant that we had to select a cross section from all year groups to be part of the show."

No stopping the new-look Old Town Festival As there won’t be a Big Arts Day this year, organisers of the Old Town Festival are determined to fill the gap and put smiles on the faces of Swindon festival goers. Chairman Trevor Smith said: “The Old Town Festival is about showcasing what a wonderful place it is, and the wonderful facilities it has. This year it is more important than ever because there is no Big Arts Day.” The festival begins with a pop concert in the Town Gardens Bowl on the afternoon of Saturday 8 June, and after a range of events during the following week, including the Brian Bridgeman Memorial Walk on Tuesday 11 June, it ends with the now familiar Parade and Family Day at The Lawns on Saturday 15 June. The climax to the festival has been scaled down to one day instead of two, for financial reasons. Former England rugby captain Lewis Moody put a Year 5 class at Taw Hill’s St Francis Primary School through their paces at a special PE class for Joe Wilding’s classmates, below, on 15 May after he started to follow Joe. On his Joe’s Battle Twitter profile Joe writes: ‘I’m 8 years old diagnosed at 5 with a brain stem tumour. I’ve already had five hours of brain surgery in 2009 and again in 2012 and 18 months chemotherapy. But I’m winning.’ Lewis offered to meet up in December and Joe’s mum Nicola made arrangements for the school visit. After the session Lewis had lunch with children who play rugby at local clubs. The next stage of the comprehensive refurbishment of Link Centre gets underway in early June with a £700,000 project to install up-to-date ice plant machinery and create a new ice pad. Work on replacing the roof and roof lights of the 26 year old building has just been completed. Earlier in the year the external pylons holding the structure up were repainted and the swimming pool reopened after a seven month refurbishment. The process of creating a new ice pad will take several weeks and involves water being frozen in stages until the ice reaches an optimum thickness of 40mm. Plan for a great tomato harvest

With such a late start to the gardening season, plants need all the help they can get to be productive this summer. Neil Long from Wroughton has come up with a good way to ensure tomatoes in grow bags don’t flop over which they are prone to do once a crop starts to ripen. He’s designed and makes cradles out of pressure treated timber to contain a growbag with vertical poles to support the growing plant. Council wants to help you cut energy costs

Swindon residents have until Monday 3 June to sign up for an initiative being launched by Swindon Borough Council to save money on household energy costs. Called The Big Community Switch, the scheme will use the combined buying power of residents of the borough to negotiate cheaper prices with energy companies. The scheme is run in partnership with ichoosr, but there is no obligation to accept the offer negotiated. Similar schemes elsewhere in the country have brought savings of at least £60 a year, and although no assurances are made, if the council reaches its target of households taking part, potential savings of £150 are anticipated. If they like the deal negotiated, residents will deal directly with the successful energy company, but for now they just need to go online or visit the One Stop Shop in Beckhampton Street to register. Shirley Bassey act to star at Down’s Syndrome James Bond ball The Swindon Down's Syndrome Group is holding a James Bond Charity Ball on Saturday 6 July at the Marriott Hotel in Swindon to raise money to fund speech and language therapy groups for all children with Down’s syndrome within the SN postcode area. There are currently over 20 young people in the Swindon area aged 13 to 19 on SMASH’s waiting list, young people who want to change their lives – and asking for a mentor is the first step. Swindon Travel Choices Swindon Travel Choices aims to make it easier for those living or working in Swindon to get around without clogging up the road network. We believe that by giving people proper travel choices, many everyday journeys can be made by bus, bike and foot rather than by car.

June is pedal powered month! National Bike Week takes place in June, but in Swindon we’ve decided to extend the biking festivities to the entire month and beyond. The Active Swindon Challenge begins on June 1st where people can sign up online to log any miles undertaken on two wheels. There will be weekly spot prizes of cinema vouchers, shopping vouchers and even a yellow jersey. See www.activeswindonchallenge.org.uk for details. Get a round in! Residents in West Swindon, Haydon Wick and Dorcan may have noticed stickers introduced on lamp posts in the area. These are marking out the “Rounds” – seven mile circular routes that can be walked, cycled, jogged or even rollerbladed. The routes were devised by local volunteers from Swindon Bike User group and first appeared on the 2009 Swindon cycle map. However, feedback indicated that it was difficult to follow the rounds because the map was too large and the routes weren’t reinforced on the ground. Now – thanks to the hard work of volunteers and funding from Swindon Travel Choices – the routes are all signposted in both directions with colour coded stickers, and the maps are available in an A4 PDF format that can be downloaded and printed at home. Western Flyer Update If you’ve walked or cycled along the Western Flyer recently you’ll have seen the work going on to upgrade the path. Over the summer months, a ‘Gateway Feature’ will be created at the Mead Way subway near Westlea – as well as improvements to the lighting and surface of the path.
