Learn to drive in West Swindon The Driving Services Agency (DSA) has applied to Swindon Council to relocate its Old Town test centre to Hillmead, next to the former Cellular Operations/Arclight building on Roughmoor Way. If built it will be one of the new generation driver test centres which will incorporate an area where motorcycle riders will be tested under standard conditions by undertaking manoeuvres on a dedicated site. A major implication for West Swindon is the increase in traffic volumes due to the number of learner drivers and motorcycle riders from across the Swindon region visiting the test centre and practicising on nearby roads. Mead Way is already very busy and with Arclight building soon to house about 200 HSM call centre employees, there will be more traffic on Tewkesbury Way and Peatmoor Way, passing housing and schools.
Drive by fast food planned for North Swindon At the third time of asking McDonalds has applied to build a restaurant and drive-through outlet in North Swindon. Previous attempts to build on the commercial site at junction 5 on Thamesdown Drive were blocked by residents’ protests, but this time they want to build at the North Swindon District Centre, close to the fuel station. Abbey Meads councillor Justin Tomlinson, who led previous protests, said, “with a pizza restaurant at the district centre, the grounds for objecting to another fast food outlet are limited. There are already precedents for restaurants and drive-throughs at retail parks. But we have told McDonalds that their standard ‘kit’ building would not be acceptable. Safe access to bus stops and shelters needed on Mead Way
When Thamesdown Transport altered the No18 to speed buses from North Swindon into the town centre via Mead Way in 2005, it was routed away from residential areas. However when the West Swindon road network was designed, no footpaths were built along main roads. Instead, a network of pedestrian walk ways was intended to create pleasant routes, away from traffic. As a result there is no footpath access or hard standing at several stops, next to the Spectrum building or at Hillmead. People visiting the Ford or Vauxhall garages and nearby office buildings have to walk along the verge and wait at muddy stops. Although shelters are provided by advertising company Adshel, hard standing and access would have to be provided by Swindon Council. “Mead Way was never originally intended as a bus route,” said transportation officer Phil Martlew. “At the moment, we’re looking at the

The complaint often made about Swindon is the lack of variety, which is then used as an excuse to take off to shop in surrounding towns. Peatmoor Gymnastic Club has grown to the extent that it needs to invest in better quality equipment to help youngsters improve. Puppy school grows up The massive response to adverts for Janet’s Puppy Skool in The Link has shown the tremendous demand for training for dogs of all ages. Although she runs puppy socialisation classes, and helps young dogs to become good citizens, Janet doesn’t stop there. She has other sessions for dogs of all ages and is keen to make sure that older dogs are still learning new tricks. To give more flexibility for owners, a Tuesday evening class is now running as well as a series of Saturday workshops. These can be booked as a block of four or one at a time. They will cover life skills, socialisation and obedience but will be adapted to the dogs in the class on the day to provide enough challenge for all abilities. “We have all sorts of fun,” said Janet. “We have such a unique venue: all the teaching is done outside so the dogs are prepared for real life experiences like walking in the park.”

Peace of mind for pet owners Twenty years ago Sheila Mitchell’s daughter’s pet goldfish led her into a business which has been going swimmingly ever since. On a long drive back from a family holiday in Scotland, Sheila, from Westlea, was pondering on how difficult it had been to find somebody to care for the fish and decided to set up Pets at Home. She visits homes twice daily while the owners are away to look after any small animals apart from dogs. Over the past twenty years Sheila has cared for a wide variety of creatures from cats, rabbit and guinea pigs to birds, fish, snakes and lizards, with many regular customers. Peatmoor Primary School is the second in Swindon to receive an EcoSchools Award. Over the last two years pupils have been carrying out a wide range of projects to cut down on energy by closing doors in the winter, recycling paper from every classroom, and working with parents to recycle at home and with partner schools in Sweden and South Africa. Vegetables have been grown and measured for maths, a compost roly-pig kept full with fruit and vegetable waste from lunchboxes and the school kitchens, taps turned off and teabags collected for an adult craft employment scheme in South Africa. Now they can fly an eco flag over the school , but only after planning permission has been granted.
