Political spread In contrast to the national picture when the Conservative party took a pasting in the County Council elections across the country, West Swindon took on a balanced look on 6 May with each of the three main political parties taking one of the seats. In Freshbrook/Grange Park, Jean Melville retained the ward for the Liberal Democrats after Simon Cordon stepped down from the County Council. The turnout was a reasonable 34% of local electors. The Toothill Ward was split into two wards for County Council purposes. In Toothill/Westlea, Arthur Goring took the seat for Labour with a 29.7% turnout of electors. In the new Roughmoor Ward, whichtakes inShaw,Peatmoorand Sparcells, Alan Winrnill was returned to the Council with a paltry 24.9% response from the electorate, the second lowest of the seventeen wards in the Thamesdown area. "1 think that some people were put off coming to a temporary building but they will feel more confident now they can see we're established in the area." He paid tribute to the late coundllorRicky Midwinter who argued for a temporary doctor's surgery whilst a permanent building was being planned. Dr Kandiah is calling for the road leading to his sur-
