Olympic torch bearer returns to Westlea primary with his poster
Ben Fox, who hopes to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games, visited his former teachers and current pupils at Westlea Primary at the end of May to tell his story and show off the Olympic torch he carried down Royal Wootton Bassett High Street on 23 May. Ben, from Westlea, who was born with several organ defects and only one leg as a result of the rare Vater syndrome, was nominated to carry the torch as part of the Coca-Cola Future Flame relay by his father Andy, and was pictured on a series of huge sponsored billboards around Britain which featured celebrities such as Dizzie Rascal, The Wanted and Eliza Doolittle. The poster was held up in a whole school assembly whilst Ben talked about making his way past the huge crowds cheering him on, carrying the torch in one hand, using a crutch in the other propelling him through the air. At a couple of points he appeared to stumble and was close to dropping the torch, but he told the children that he had to keep stopping to pull up his tracksuit bottoms as they were falling down. His message to the children was: “I was in your situation in 2005 but I’ve learnt that if you really want to do something, don’t let anything stop you.” Continued opposite

Flame photo passed on to Drogba fan
The centre of Swindon was awash with colour and noise when 15,000 people watched the Olympic torch touring the town on 23 May. Ten year old Jake Collis from Haydon Wick had a prime spot atop his dad’s shoulders to see his idol Didier Drogba carry the torch, but his mum’s camera was suddenly obscured by a balloon as the footballer passed. Swindon Link was able to help the Chelsea mad youngster who plays for St Francis Primary School, Taw Hill and Swindon Rangers Under 10s A, by providing our picture of the European Cup winner holding the lit torch. “It was awesome when my mum gave me the picture,” said Jake who has displayed it in his Chelsea themed bedroom.

Lydiard Park Academy sees the torch
Ben Fox, continued Alex O’Brian, one of Ben’s teachers at Westlea, said: “We’re all so incredibly proud of Ben; he’s always been an amazing inspiration to us.” Marla Carroll, co-organiser of special resource provision for physically disabled pupils at Westlea, agreed. “Having a physical disability doesn’t stop you in your dreams in any way, shape or form. It was wonderful to take some of our children with and without disabilities to join members of Ben’s family cheer him on carrying the torch.” Ben’s mum Carol said he was extremely proud to carry the torch in Royal Wootton Bassett. “It’s a very special place remembered for sad occasions in the past but Ben was very happy to be part of a joyous occasion.” • Ben is a member of the Great Britain under 21 wheelchair basketball team and is aiming to compete at the Rio Olympics in 2016. • Ben shows Norman Butler how to carry the torch on page 35

Jubilee parade celebrates people of the planet
Children at Oakhurst Primary School made a spectacular promenade around their community dressed in costume and waving flags of countries around the world. The school follows an international primary school curriculum and each class is named after a major city. Three classes went a step further by using the Jubilee parade as an opportunity to celebrate the Hindu festival of Holi where people become totally covered in colourful powder paint, right. Parents and friends watched the cavalcade as it wound its way through the estate, with beat policeman PC Troy Smith organising street crossing patrols, returning to school where children sang God bless the Queen by Out of The Ark Music, and enjoyed a dance C h i l d r e n a t and drumming session with Kaya schools in the White Horse Drums. Community comes together around their village green One hundred and thirty residents living in the Grange Park area of Sleaford, Parr, Cleve and Boleyn Closes came together for the first time to celebrate the Jubilee. Organiser Ali Vitale and representatives from each close started planning in March for their party which included a performance by Swindon Young Recorders, a bouncy castle and a disco into the night. “About 80 per cent of households participated; the Jubilee has really
brought us together,” said Ali. “It’s made us realise how much people value community and are keen to work together to
organise other social activities and things like an effective neighbourhood watch scheme.”
Rapid reorganisation for farm party Toothill residents gathered at Toothill Farm on Bodiam Drive for party games, a bouncy castle, human horse racing and a late event, a timed course for powered scooters. Stan Mark fell out of his scooter after he took a corner too quickly but the winning time on his second run suggested he had extra Duracells on board. Because of threatened rain, the party organised by the Toothill Big Local committee was brought forward 24 hours to Monday 4 June. Torch arrival gives party an Olympic touch The heavy rain on 3 June did not put off organisers of the Jubilee party in Alderley Road area of Redhouse, which also had an Olympic dimension. Resident Carney Bonner brought along the torch he carried through Chiseldon on 23 May for people to see, hold and pose with. Organiser Stephen Mytton said Blunsdon Parish Council had provided funds to purchase bunting and children’s arts and crafts materials. The day raised nearly £338 for Prospect Hospice.

Free Cycle Parking Good cycle parking is a proven way of deterring cycle theft. “Take a Stand” is a scheme that donates free cycle parking stands for community groups, churches, charities, shops and small businesses. As part of our community consultation in 2011 clear concerns were expressed about the safety of using West Swindon footpaths and cycletracks after dark especially in the winter. We have responded with a project to provide upgraded street lighting along a key link from the Link Centre to Freshbrook and Grange Park. A total of 27 new lamp posts have been installed using low energy, low maintenance lights which provide a white light rather than an orange or yellow glow. Consultations also highlighted difficulties in navigating round West Swindon’s complex network of footpaths and cycle routes. In response we have been providing new direction signs at key locations and we have produced maps showing the range of routes and links that are available. West Swindon residents on the route of bus service 19 expressed their frustration that because Sunday services are operated by a different bus company to the Monday to Saturday services there was no comprehensive timetable showing the entire service. In April we therefore produced a full colour leaflet showing the entire service, including a route map and details of fares. Copies were then distributed to all households along the route (Sparcells, Peatmoor, Nine Elms and Shaw).

A hive of activity in Freshbrook
At Millbrook Primary School children created a coin trail in the shape of the Queen’s head which raised £350 for Helen and Douglas House Hospice in memory of Cian Lee, a Year 5 child who died earlier in the year. Classes performed activities relating to significant times in the Queen’s sixty year reign and performed six songs, one from each decade starting with Rock Around The Clock, the 1958 classic that most people say launched the pop music revolution, to Take That’s Never Forget from the 90s, with the whole school taking part in R. Kelly’s World’s Greatest. Fish and chips was served for lunch in the playground followed by line, country and maypole dancing. The Millbrook nursery showing off real royal pomp

Oakhurst Residents’ Association (ORA) chair Paul Exell told the committee that the application should be rejected as there were too many issues still to be decided, such as when a primary school would be built, how the extra traffic from 1,695 houses will be accommodated, and whether the rapid-bus route would go past Redhouse Village Centre or along Oakhurst Way. Terry Hunt, chair of the Rodbourne Residents’ Association told the meeting that the impact of extra traffic from the site would add to the gridlock on all routes to and from the town. He described Crest’s claim that a rapid-transit bus could carry passengers to the town centre in 25 minutes as ‘complete nonsense.’ Committee member Cllr Keith Williams said the inadequacies of the North Swindon development were partly due to outline plan-

Teachers Mark Frank and Suraya Basson were working for a week at Nova Hreod School which first made a link with Harold Cressy High School in 2008 when former deputy headteacher Tom Wilkes set up the staff exchange. Since then six members of staff from each school have visited each other and developed projects in history, science and English. Mark said: “I have enjoyed every minute of my time in the UK and I have been very impressed with all of the learners I have met both at Nova and at Bridlewood. “The reason we came to Bridlewood is to help develop a link between the school and Yellowoods Primary School in Cape Town. Suraya and I will be taking a video, produced by pupils at Bridlewood, back with us to give to the headteacher and her staff.” Tom Wilkes added: “During each visit it has been possible for the staff
involved to learn a great deal about how the school works and how lessons are taught in England and in South Africa. Assemblies have played a large part in explaining to students at Nova and learners at Harold Cressy how people live their lives in each other’s countries. “It has been pleasing that The Link has been regularly reporting on the visits over the last four years and copies of the magazine have been distributed and used by learners at Harold Cressy as part of their education programme.” The exchanges have been made possible through subsidy from the ‘Global Schools Programme’ which has now been axed as part of the Coalition Government’s cutbacks. Schools have been forced to choose between raising all the money needed to sustain this valuable international work through continued face to face contact, or cut it back for lack of resources.

Late party was fun for all Salt Way Children’s Centre held their Jubilee party after the big weekend so that older siblings could attend during the half term holiday. Children took part in jubilee themed arts and crafts, and made crowns, flags and paper chains. They also decorated biscuits and cakes with red, white and blue icing and made cucumber sandwiches for lunch. Open Day as Hop Skip and Jump celebrates first year in Swindon
Hop Skip and Jump, which offers flexible day care for children and young people with special needs, as well as respite care for their families, is opening its doors on Saturday 14 July, 11.30am to 2.30pm, to show the world their facilities and range of services. Based at Upper Shaw Farm Community Centre, Shaw Ridge, the charity offers activities for young people and their siblings up to age 25, and it provides a base for Swindon Young Carers Group who meet at the centre each Monday evening. Summer 2012 is more than sport, as Swindon Libraries launch Youngsters will be looking for interesting alternatives to watching hours of Olympic sport during the holidays and Swindon Libraries are launching Story Lab to help them discover fascinating books. Yet there is a sporting element to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge™ and it is simple to do. Children who join the scheme at their local library are given a three dimensional card and incentives to aim for as they read, with a certificate and medal for those that successfully complete the challenge of reading six books by 8 September.
Last year children read 10,408 books through the summer as part of the challenge. Giving it an Olympic twist, organisers are setting Swindon children the target of reading 12,000 books. Progress will be updated via the library Twitter feed and a totaliser on the Swindon Summer Reading Challenge web page. Throughout the summer there will be several stage incentives, such as taking part in a story trail at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, and receiving vouchers for pitch and putt, crazy golf or ice-skating
at Link Centre. During the challenge library staff and volunteers will be on hand to help children win medals for reading, and an interactive Story Lab website links children with top authors and illustrators whilst giving them room to talk about
their favourite books and share reading ideas. Enrolment starts from Saturday 14 July but Story Lab explodes into action on Saturday 21 July, 10.30am, with a storytelling extravaganza with Neil Griffiths at North Swindon Library.

Big Arts Day – the hottest thing this summer
It’s been a summer for rediscovering community and doing things together and the free festival on Saturday 14 July in Lydiard Park is set to be bigger and better than ever. A Portrait of Swindon, a film about Swindon, seen in part by the Queen, will be screened in Lydiard Park on 14 July. Scores of residents starred in the showreel which celebrates the borough’s rich heritage, culture, commerce, communities and landscapes, made specially for the Swindon tent in the grounds of Salisbury Cathedral when Her Majesty visited Wiltshire on Tuesday 1 May. In keeping with the royal portrait theme, whilst making the film people were asked who they would like to see sitting on a special gold sofa. the bigger picture BMW launch new gravity defying Mini model A Swindon Link idea in 2009 to turn town centre office block Alexander House into a giant artistic canvas has become a reality after owners Lenta Offices saw the possibilities of drawing attention to their building. Originally we envisaged a virtual project for Photoshop users but Lenta sponsored a competition for children to submit ideas. The cost of decorating the build� ing with one of the mural entries was prohibitive, but Mike Pringle, then working for Forward Swindon, approached BMW about attaching two Minis to a ‘road’ painted on the lift shaft of Alexander House complete with a few roundabouts to create a
vertical streetscape. Kimberley Ragousis, commu� nications manager at Mini Plant Swindon, said: “Mike Pringle pro� posed a quirky, out of the ordinary project which fitted the unconven� tional brand that is Mini. The plant in Stratton has been open for 60 years so it’s super to be able to promote one of the town’s products in this unusual way.” At the unveiling on 31 May Lenta MD Robert Levey said: “The Link magazine called Alexander House an ugly building but we thought their suggestion gave us a chance to create a landmark.” Building manager Rachel ������������ Hamp� son added: “It’s fantastic to see the Minis up there. Whatever your point of view, the site is now a talking point for the people of Swindon and visitors to the town.” • The Minis are best viewed from Fleet Street.

Bring some soul to the Big Arts Day and help Swindon’s machine capture the winds of Wiltshire
After two spectacular Big Arts Days at Lydiard Park organisers were looking for a unique event for the 2012 festival finale. Big Arts Day director Helen Miah said she discovered in the Autumn that Wiltshire was the only county not involved in an Olympic themed show for the South West. “When I approached Cirque Bijou in Bristol they said they were working on a massive regional arts project to launch the Olympic sailing events in Weymouth - and Wiltshire was not yet involved. The challenge was there and Swindon took it. “The idea is tell a story loosely based on the Greek myth of Aeolis, the God of the Winds, where each county creates a machine to ‘capture’ and carry their wind to Weymouth, to battle it out in a performance to see who has the best sailing winds.” Artist and former Swindon railway worker Gordon Dickinson was approached to invent the machine whilst UK slack line champion Jake the Juggler took the role of Wiltshire wind collector Eurus who, with dancers and circus performers from Swindon will present the county’s performance in Weymouth.

Think Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Back to the Future, to say the least, Gordon’s creation has character. He drew on his apprenticeship to create beautifully crafted metal ‘clouds’ representing the steam and smoke of the railways. For power he has used an old bike supplied by the Salvation Army Recycles project, whilst pushers using their legs will sit on two old tractor seats facing backwards.
At Lydiard Park festival goers will be able to discover the music that can be created using organ pipes, bellows, and a home made xylophone mounted on the machine which sits on an old caravan chassis. In the evening finale Jake will put on a high wire act - see picture on page 19 - whilst the machine with a DJ on top, steam whooshing from its engine, surrounded by dancers, will capture the Soul of Swindon.

Treetop trail opens in Lydiard Park
Fifty tree-trekking activities on six trails have been erected amongst the trees near the public play area in Lydiard Park. Courses for children of different ages provide the challenge and exhilaration of swinging, zipping and climbing between the trees in a safe and controlled environment. Full instruction is provided and all participants wear a harness and learn how to safely clip and unclip themselves from each activity. Big Screen ready for Royal Ballet inSwindon BID’s partnership with the Royal Opera House continues to bear fruit with a stunning Royal Ballet production confirmed for the Big Screen. A dark, haunting and brilliantly engaging piece, Metamorphosis: Titan 2012 will be beamed back from the Royal Opera House on Monday 16th July. Swindon’s best young dancers to grace Wharf Green On July 21st, some of Swindon’s hottest dance talent will join five top notch professionals to put on a very special performance in Swindon town centre. The urban-themed event, called ‘Marks Set Go!’ will also feature Olympians and Paralympians ahead of the London 2012 Opening Ceremony on July 27th. The performance will be set in front of a ground-breaking new film from
local filmmaker Peter Anderson, which shows dancers and athletes projected into unusual locations to celebrate an exhilarating union between sport and the arts. With performances also scheduled in Plymouth, Bath, Bristol and Weymouth, ‘Marks Set Go!’ is set to take the South West by storm this summer – so make sure you are there to see it!

Swindon games on 21 July will be an opener for the big one
Swindon’s Mechanics’ Trust is aiming to make this year’s Children’s Fete on 21 July in the GWR Park, Faringdon Road, the biggest and best ever. The fete dates back to 1866 and was a key event in the town’s diary until World War II. Revived by the trust in 2002, with a break last year, the London Olympics will be a theme for this year’s volunteer run event. The afternoon will be filled with activities for children including an arts and crafts tent, storytelling, an under 5’s play area, a funfair, circus skills,
and DJ and break-dancing workshops, along with stalls by children’s charities, community organisations and artists, and games organised by Swindon Town’s Football in the Community team. There will also be an older children’s marquee, for those who are less active but are young at heart. The tradition of the past was that all children attending received a slice of cake; this year they’ll be a able to choose from a range of cupcakes. Charlie’s hair could be shaved off if targets are not met in 2012 Freshbrook based woman power-lifter Charlie Shotton-Gale returned from the European Powerlifting Championships in May pleased to have improved her European ranking by two places, and to have beaten three out of four personal bests. During 2012 Charlie, right, hopes to beat the British records of 212kg in the squat, 132kg in the bench and 200kg in the deadlift, and to raise money for the Breaking Free Support project for female survivors of sexual abuse and rape. Her sport and her fundraising goals will come together at the World Championships in Puerto Rico in November, and she has set the bar high. “Either I beat the British records in November, or I raise £3,000 for Breaking Free,” said Charlie. “If I do neither, I’m shaving off my hair.” In Poland Charlie managed 190k in the squat, 127.5k in the bench and 190k in the deadlift, only 10k short of the bronze medal. She feels she is on the right track. She said: “I’ve been an international powerlifter for two years and I’m getting closer to a medal position. I’m happy that

John Maxwell, chaplain to the Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, will be heading out from his Westlea home in July to Tenerife, where he will be competing in the European Police and Fire Games. Unlike the Olympics, the games are held every two years, and John has competed in three tournaments since 2006, scooping 8 medals in athletics and table tennis. John explained: “All the different ranks and ages take part in 76 events. This year I’ll be competing in the table tennis with my colleague Sean Carpenter from Stratton.” Later in the year John will be returning to the Gambia as a representative of Kit Aid, which provides football kit and equipment for teams and communities John, coaching on earlier trip to Gambia in Africa. Olympic pool hopes for Link Centre
Swindon could soon have a 50 metre pool if a bid by Swindon Borough Council for one of the temporary training pools currently located close to the aquatic centre at the London Olympics Park is successful.

The idea would be to locate the full sized pool next to the Link Centre ice rink which would necessitate relocating the all weather football pitches currently on the site. The actual pool is a modular kit with an adjustable floor and a wall so that it can be divided for different uses, or part covered to conserve energy. Councillor Keith Williams, cabinet lead member for leisure services said: “This is a once in a life-time opportunity that we have to go for. The current Link 25 metre pool has just had a £70,000 makeover and will be good for some years. A full size 50 metre pool would realise an ambition of the town’s swimming clubs and would enable talented swimmers to fulfil their potential
without having to join clubs in other towns.” He added that there would be improved spectator facilities as well as improved energy use as the ice rink chilling plant would provide heat for the pool and is due for replacement next year. However the council would need to find about £4m to make the alterations to Link Centre, which would be raised through a capital expenditure loan. Cllr Williams said: “We would not be able to self-finance this type of project from scratch, but this is an opportunity that doesn’t come round very often. It would be a great legacy of the 2012 Olympics to reuse one of the pools here in Swindon.”

Nationwide team tidy up Toothill Farm
The front garden at Toothill Farm was given a major make-over in late May with twenty five staff from the Protection and Investments Team weeding and then planting flowering shrubs, removing a fence and preparing a surface ready for an outdoor table tennis table to be installed. Team leader John Wilkinson said it was good to work with colleagues in a different setting. “We’re all so busy in front of computers in the office day to day, so it was really great to get out and do a team project where we’ve had to work out different problems and discover new skills.” Nationwide aims to undertake twice as much community work during 2012 and 2013 compared with last year. A competition to name the boy and girl mascots that adorn the side of the building at the popular Mead Way adventure play facility Kidz About, has been won by mum of two Nicola Moore from Gorse Hill, who proposed the names of her own children, Joshua and Maisey. Individuals and organisations can buy into the project as a longterm investment with a minimum spend of £250 and a maximum of £20,000. The aim is to make the offer as accessible as possible and the project is particularly looking for local people to apply. If the share offer is oversubscribed, priority will be given to them in the allocation of shares. Adam Twine, organic farmer, green entrepreneur and a director of Westmill Solar, above, said: “We hope that there will be substantial local ownership of the solar farm so that the profits from the site are retained within the community. The solar farm is a great local resource that we hope will inspire other communities to produce their own power. ” The 30 acre site, one of the largest in the UK, has more than 20,000 polycrystalline solar panels and produces 4.8GWh per year - enough to provide 1,400 homes average annual electricity requirement. Part of the solar farm’s income will come from the 25 year government feed-in tariff contract. As the site was generating clean electricity before 1 August 2011, it benefits at the highest level of payment. The share offer is to raise £4 million equity. Westmill Solar is working with leading investment bank Investec to secure a bond for the debt required to complete the purchase of the £15m project from seed investor Blue Energy. The project is led by a board of directors, including Adam Twine, who has a track record in tackling climate change at a local level. Largely unseen behind high hedges, a team of volunteers have been working hard to extend the Swindon & Cricklade Railway line to a temporary station on the edge of Mouldon Hill Park.

If all goes well and necessary permissions are secured the railway society hopes to open a temporary station called Taw Valley Halt in September, a short walk from the car park. They plan to bring a buffet car from Blunsdon Station on a daily basis to provide refreshments to visitors and sell them tickets for the three mile train ride northwards to Hayes Knoll and back. Track laying gang boss Dave Randall said: “With assistance from a track mounted machine on loan from Ready Power the volunteers have cleared away years of undergrowth, prepared the ground and laid one and a half miles

of line on ballast since mid-April.” Railway society building works manager Dave Peacey is optimistic that all the effort will pay off this year. “It’s been hard work getting things right to please everyone. Hopefully in September you’ll be able to see steam trains puffing besides Thamesdown Drive, opposite the Tawny Owl pub.” However he issued the latest of many appeals to pedestrians and dog walkers made through Swindon Link. “The railway is a dangerous place and we ask people to stay off it and not cross the line to reach the fields on the other side.”
