4 The Link Magazine • July 2002 Noisy chaos characterised a jubilee picnic lunch at Peatmoor School as the sound of drums rang out to send headteacher Terri Peacock and teacher Donna Bloomfield off for a week in South Africa. They visited Soweto townships in Johannesburg during half term and spent three days teaching at Dihlabeng Christian School in the mountains, four hours from Durban. Peatmoor has linked up with the school via Swindon Family Church and has raised over £1,000 for educational materials. Terri and Donna also spent time searching out crafts and teaching ideas for an Africa Week during July. Making drums and African crafts will be the main feature of a two week summer school for years 6 to 9. See page 41 to book a place. Unpredictable weather forced Greenmeadow School to hold its ^• " planned playground picnic lunch inside. Each class came to school dressed up in the fashions that have evolved during the Queen's reign. Children circulated round the classes playing games designed for each decade, such as the Berlin Wall and the Hand of God games, as well as activities like pin the tail on the donkey, skittles, space hopper and micro-scooter races.

The slide has been incorporated into an embankment to make use of the natural contours of the site." Rubber safety surfaces have been used extensively with tree bark under the rope climbing unit. A painted steel fence surrounds the area to deter dogs, provide security and prevent children straying.

Shakespeare Storysack shows quality in Swindon schools A unique project to teach Shakespeare to primary and secondary school children by using the contents of a Storysack has been hailed by the private company now running education in the town as an example of the excellent work to be found in Swindon's schools. At a presentation on 30 May, children from Greendown and Oliver Tomkins Infants School showed off how they have been working together to develop an understanding of Shakespeare using dynamic interactive techniques based on the early years' literacy aid Storysacks. "It was impressive to see children from primary and secondary schools working so well together. This has potential for smoothing the transition between school phases. Graffiti artists to get their wall back A West Swindon councillor has been successful in getting a graffiti wall repaired for a second time. The wall at Mannington provides one of the few legal sites for graffiti artists in Swindon, but vandals destroyed it for the second time. The second tournament at the JJB Soccerdome in Wigan at the end of June brought together the top two teams from Wales, Scotland, Ireland and England. Just reaching this stage was an achievement in itself as over 3,000 schools entered with over 30,000 players taking part. The Bradon boys won their qualifying group at a canter, beating the Scottish champions 3 - 0, the Irish champions 4 - 1 and the Welsh 3 - 0. From this group they qualified for the semi finals which they duly won 3 - 1. In the final they again met the other English team, St Ignatius School, Enfield, winning the UK title 1 - 0. Race for life in all weathers In contrast to the hot conditions in the last two years, over 2,600 women had to brave a keen wind and driving rain at Lydiard Park on 9 June to raise money for the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK at Lydiard Park. At times runners and walkers were slowed to a slippery slide through the muddy bits of the park. "It was a great atmosphere despite the bad weather" said Eve Osorio from Nine Elms. "The aerobic warm up got us all in the mood. I surprised myself; maybe the London marathon next." The event was poignant for Deirdre O'Connell from Toothill. "Last year I ran whilst going through chemotherapy for breast cancer. It was a fantastic feeling to do the run again."

Swindon's well known radio personality Shirley Ludford is back on air during July as she takes the first steps in new career paths. After 14 years at BBC Wiltshire Sound and before that Wiltshire Radio, she'll be heard during the second trial broadcast for Swindonl07fm, presenting the breakfast slot from 8am to 11am on Saturday and Sunday. She'll also be contributing to the drive time programme between 4pm and 7pm on Monday and Tuesdays, as well as using her experience to train other presenters at the station. "This is a really exciting challenge for me," said Shirley. "It was time for a move and the opportunity to return to air with a regular programme was too good to miss. Looking after West Swindon Having lived in West Swindon for 14 years I sadly have to agree with The Link comments (May 2002) that the appearance of Freshbrook and Grange Park has deteriorated and that some residents have concerns as to how safe an area we live in. It is very easy when walking past graffiti and broken bus shelter glass to forget that it is a very small minority who commit these and other acts. It is also easy to feel intimidated when passing a group of hooded youngsters forgetting how intimidating one's own children may look when out, I believe to live happily in an area you have to have confidence and a sense of worth in that community. This can only occur if you

have trust in the other local residents. We have a lot to be proud of here in West Swindon with facilities that outstrip other similar new communities, for example Bradley Stoke in North Bristol. However, we do have to take responsibility for our area and work together to improve both its looks and community spirit. It can happen, a good example being the Peatmoor clean up organised by their community association. I would also like tobe able to say trust your local councillor but as not one candidate came to my door prior to the recent local elections I do not know their priorities for our area.

Derek Richards of Hayden Wick suggests (in the June Link) that Ash Brake residents should have known about the commercial site on the corner of Lady Lane and Thamesdown Drive when they bought their houses, and therefore have no right to complain about the present proposals for a McDonalds drive-thru restaurant, KFC takeaway, a pizza restaurant and a video shop. I would suggest that the residents have every right to complain. For while the nature of the commercial use was never specified, they had a right to expect that

whatever the use might be, it would be neighbourhood friendly. The present proposals will attract considerable traffic volumes to what is in fact a small site, with associated traffic noise and flashing headlights at night. When you add to this the problems of cooking smells and consumers' rubbish, you have a situation which is a good deal worse than local residents or those who sold them their homes could have foreseen several years ago. They have every right to complain, for it is their homes and their lives that are being affected.

For me, Saturday 11 May was one of the most exciting days/nights of mylife. After months of training and more than a little doubt as to my capabilities I joined the Swindon Twin Peaks team for Walk the Walk 2002. From the moment I got on the coach at the Link Centre I felt 'on cloud nine'. Even if I did not complete the 26.2 miles, I told myself that I would give it my best shot, At midnight it was time to go. Fortunately all my training under the careful eye of Eunice Salmon, our organiser, and the hype of the night came together at just the right ti me. As a person who loves crowds, being part of a team of 10,000 people all with a common aim got me through the first twenty miles - then I hit the wall. Thanks to Sophia, the daughter of one of our walkers I was able to carry on. Sophia had spent the afternoon carefully tattooing a picture of Dinos Papadakis on my

back and another on my husband Ralph's back. Dinos was a member of our group who was tragically killed in a car accident on 6 March and we were walking in his memory. We only had to look at our pictures and all aching limbs were forgotten; the last five miles were relatively easy! I would like to say a huge 'thank you' to Eunice for all her hard work and commitment to Breakthrough, also thanks to all the Swindon Twin Peaks walkers who encouraged me. I am battling against breast cancer for the second time and I want them to know just how much their support and efforts inspired me. As group contact of Breakthrough in Wiltshire I am constantly amazed by the enthusiasm of the walkers. They are all brilliant and I know that we will have raised many thousands of pounds forbothBreakthroughBreastCancer and the Bristol Cancer Centre.

More ladies welcome at get-togethers in Westlea

West Swindon Ladies' Club meets twice a month on Monday evenings in the Sunshine Room at Westlea School, Langstone Way to listen to speakers, chat and organise social evenings. Men's health talk at women's health centre The Swindon Well Woman Centre holds its Annual General Meeting on Friday 28 June, 12.30pm in the Health Hydro, Milton Road. Guest speaker Richard Merrett of the Health Promotion Unit Wiltshire will talk about men's health. The Well Woman Centre holds its women's medical sessions on Mondays, 5.30pm to 7.30pm, and Wednesdays 12.30pm to 2.30pm when there is a creche. No appointment is necessary. A support worker is also available at these sessions, and also on Fridays, 10am to 12noon, to provide a confidential listening and support service.
