Call for the 'community' to be put back into community centre

Betty McKinley, new chairperson of Toothill Community Centre

Over sixty residents attended the Annual General meeting of Toothill Community Centre on 16 June. The meeting, which was at times noisy with people making their points of view forcefully, elected a new committee to manage the centre. Anger flared up when the relationship between the licensed bar and the community centre was discussed. Officers of Thamesdown Council, which leases the building to a local management committee, explained that to avoid taxation of bar profits a trading company would have to be set up under

Apologies in advance Fireworks will be going up over Windmill Hill onSaturday8July towards the end of a day's fun and entertainment for the staff, their friends and relations at PHH. Last years event, which included a disco in tents outside the PHH Centre., went on well after midnight and was quite a shock to people living in the parts of Grange Park and Freshbrook closeby. This year the company has written to the Environmental Health Department at Thamesdown Borough Council to warn them of noise from fireworks and the party. A representative of the department said, 'PHH have informed us that there will be music being played out of doors and a short fireworks display at

10p.m. and that they will be taking precautions to avoid nuisance to nearby residents. "The company has been advised that the Council cannot prevent what is essentially a private function, but as there were quite a number of complaints last year, we have recommended that music be played at a moderate level and should cease at midnight." Speaking for PHH, Communications Executive Liz Johnson said, "This is an annual event to thank all our employees for their work during the year. As we have some 800 people on the staff, we have to have a marquee complex next to the Centre. We will be doing everything we can to minimise the nuisance but hope people will understand."

PHH fete - local people invited Liz Johnson went on to say that during the day on Saturday July, PHH will be holding a fete/fun day in the grounds of the PHH Centre. "There will be stalls put on by staff and a number of charitable groups, childrens sports and refreshments. Residents of West Swindon are welcome to join us. All the proceeds are being donated to equip a special room at Westlea School for children with handicaps." •Westlea headteacher Neil Griffiths describes the room he is hoping to raise £5,000 for on page 6.

the control of the committee. Users of the bar voiced their objection to the closing down of the separate bar management committee. Playgroup supervisor Janet Freeguard expressed her view that the centre should be available to the whole community. Her playgroup often had problems with the centre and there was too much 'them and us' between user groups and the bar. Afterwards she said, "I was angry with what has been going on. The centre belongs to the whole community and everybody should be working together. A lot of people were thinking the same, but not speaking out."

The meeting elected Mrs. Betty McKinley of Warnford Close as the new chairperson of the centre management committee. She has lived in Toothill for 12 years and has been involved with several local organisations like the West Swindon Family Project, an after school club, the local advice point and the new Credit Union. "A lot more activities need to be started in the centre and we need more peopleto be involved. I'd like to see an emphasis on family activities with new groups starting. This is a job for the new committee." To find out more about Toothill Community Centre, telephone on 614492.
