Council turns down Westlea houses plan An application to build 88 more houses on land next to the Delta Business Park in Westlea was thrown out by Thamesdown Council's Planning Committee on 6th June. This means the proposed Tennis Centre to be built on the site might have been put in jeopardy because of associated land finance deals. Over fifty people living in roads adjacent to the site lobbied councillors before the meeting and stayed on to observe its proceedings. The planning application to build the houses was put by Tarmac Homes whose representatives attended a public meeting in May organised by councillor Ricky Midwinter. Commenting on the committee's decision, Coun. Midwinter said that it was regrettable that Tarmac had not taken into account the strength of feeling of residents from the public meeting and had submitted an application without any amendments. "Residents had expressed their views very clearly. They wanted fewer houses and the height of the site reduced. 'l was very pleased by the turnout of local people and I want to congratulate them for following the issue through." Local councillor Tony Free, speaking at the meeting, said that he was very concerned by the attitude taken by the developer towards the local community. "Its very important that Thamesdown Council does not crumble under pressure from house builders. If we are taken in by their demands, we would become their organ and not be representing the people who elected us." He was also impressed by the concern shown by residents. (continued on page 3)
