Rapid response provides a little help to typhoon survivors Youngsters at Isambard School put a huge effort into quickly responding to a charity appeal to help survivors of Typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines on 9 November.

Within days of the disaster graphic arts teacher Marie Stacey made contact with Bath based Mercy in Action who were asking for shoeboxes of dried food, toiletries, stationery, gifts and toys, candles and a greeting card.

Become a breast cancer challenger in 2014 The local branch of Breakthrough Breast Cancer is calling on people to take up the challenge of each raising £1,000 during the year.

The project is in memory of group founder Shirley Garman, below, who passed away in 2009.

Her aim when she set up the branch in 1995 was to raise £1 million.

The push is on to complete her dying wish and raise the last £160,000.

Ben’s media message Ben has been increasingly irritated by the repeated misconceptions and mis-reporting of his condition and wants everybody to know that he is not completely immobile. He can move his head and body a bit, though he sometimes needs assistance to put his head and arms in the right position.

He is not dependent on oxygen to sleep, but he does use an air circulation ventilator to aid his breathing at night.

Nor does he need stimulation at school. As a very intelligent Year 8 student at Commonweal he requires a teaching assistant to hold up a book and to take notes or write for him in tests, but he comes up with all the answers.

The developer obtained permission on appeal to build 200 houses at Moredon Bridge in 2009 - between Mead Way and Thamesdown Drive, within north Wiltshire.

The planning inspector specifically vetoed development of the adjacent field called Bradley’s Meadow.

Now Wain Homes want to overturn the ruling said Richard. “Bradley’s Meadow is a Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI). Sadly Wiltshire Council began to negotiate with the developers to recreate a habitat equivalent to Bradley’s Meadow somewhere else.

“The developer is not daft. They offered Wiltshire Council some money to do this, but Wiltshire want the developer to get their hands dirty. There is a simple reason for this reluctance on both sides. Creating habitat equivalent - or ‘offsetting’ - is very much a new science. Debate rages as to whether it is even achievable because you can’t just create a mature conservation area somewhere else.”

Because Wiltshire Council has not given permission, the developers have lodged an appeal for non-

determination of their application.

Richard said: “With 700 houses being built at Ridgeway Farm just up the road, and 1,690 at Tadpole Farm not far away, these fifty houses are not required. Neither the emerging Wiltshire Core Strategy nor the Swindon Core Strategy call for more houses in this location.

Furthermore Wiltshire has an adequate housing land supply in the north of the county according to a planning inspector in November.

“So, it’s time to write to the inspectorate and say, loudly, that these fifty houses should not be built on an environmentally sensitive site.”

Westlea Primary School joined thousands of schools across the country to celebrate the fourth annual Food for Life Partnership's national Roast Dinner Day on Wednesday 20 November, to mark work going on in schools to transform food culture and provide tasty and nutritious meals using fresh local seasonal produce.

Representatives from the Soil Association and Food for Life Partnership joined the pupils for lunch. Funded by the Big Lottery’s Well-being programme, the partnership educates and inspires children about the journey their food takes from field to fork.

At Westlea, only 30 children had hot lunches when they were prepared in an off-site kitchen. Since the school kitchen reopened in April 2011, up to 120 children now enjoy a daily meal cooked by kitchen manager Linda Wells and assistant Claire Baldwin.

Sixth form conversion to be ready for September For nearly 40 years young people living in West Swindon have had to travel to further their education after GCSEs to colleges or school based sixth forms in Swindon town centre, East Swindon, Cirencester, Royal Wootton Bassett or Wroughton.

But work is about to start on converting parts of Lydiard Park Academy in Grange Park to provide up to 250 places for 16 to 18 year olds studying for A’ Levels.

Part of the cafeteria - orginally the Len Hobbs community suite - will become the sixth form common room, with adjacent tutorial and study room. Classes will also be held in existing labs and classrooms.

LPA headteacher Clive Zimmerman said he was delighted with the take-up of places for the first intake.

“We had an enthusiastic response to our open evenings in November.

Parents are pleased to see a sixth form being established to the west of the town and impressed by our curriculum proposals.

“Our aim was to open with a pilot year of 90 students but we believe we’ll exceed this number.

“We’ll have a good take-up from the present Year 11 and a number of students coming from other schools.”

Duke’s magazine highlights Swindon students Community work by Lydiard Park Academy students Logan Prince and Amber Ballard, below, have been featured recently in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award magazine.

Both have been pursuing the Silver programme and in 2013 Amber undertook voluntary work with Swindon Guide Dogs.

Logan, a member of the Okhanagan Ice Hockey Squad studying at the school, has been coaching children at Link Centre in his own time. He said: “The Duke of Edinburgh scheme and ice hockey training have taught me the importance of organisation and discipline in the use of my time.”

Crowdys’ children make connection with kids in Zambia Youngsters from Crowdys Hill Special School are making unusual contact with special needs children at Livingstone High School, in the capital of Zambia.

Working with Swindon based solar lighting charity Lights for Learning who are also active in Zambia, and to build on contacts made in 2012, in November children helped to assemble kits to be installed in schools in the country.

Twenty students assembled and tested LED light boxes that will be powered by solar panels connected to car batteries. Each box was labelled with the name of the student who made it, and they each completed an all-about-me booklet to be sent to the special needs class at Livingstone High School.

Teacher Gemma Watkins said: “Because of our global partnership with Zambia it was great to work with Lights for Learning as part of our science curriculum.

“It’s a big concept to understand the needs of children at a school in Africa. But our students can imagine not having a mini-bus to get to school and not having electricity at the flick of a switch. Roger’s pictures really

brought home the differences, they made a serious impression. The class was really fired up to help.”

In February, with a commission from the Zambian government, 12 Lights for Learning volunteers will be fitting solar powered lights to 9 schools, and also setting up an assembly workshop in the country.

“The Orchid Vale youngsters visited Gablecross police station to view the custody suite and went into the cells. They were most shocked to learn that if anyone checks on you in the cell they might see you on the toilet.

“What makes it even more powerful is that they then go into other year 6 groups and make a presentation to them about youth justice and what they’ve experienced. This has a lot

more impact than an adult like me presenting the same information.”

Commenting on the success of the project Denise said: “Swindon YOT won second prize at the Youth Justice Board conference in 2012 for this initiative which is unique in Britain.

For such a small team we consider this to be a great achievement.”

Expressing her enthusiasm Orchid Vale head girl Abbie Greening said: “It’s a good way to learn about the difference between doing good and bad things.”

Swindon MPs urge schools to use free financial education resources

Justin Tomlinson MP and Robert Buckland MP are calling on Swindon schools to get their pupils talking and learning about money, as part of a charity’s new campaign to help improve the financial capability of young people.

Every primary and secondary school in Swindon has been sent free Get Money Smart posters and teaching materials by the Personal Finance Education Group (pfeg).

The posters aimed at different age groups are designed to encourage classroom discussion about money and personal finance. Foodbank prepares for even greater demand Greendown Playgroup in Grange Park collected tinned and dried food for Swindon Foodbank in early December to help the charity that is experiencing unprecedented demands for help.

Foodbank manager Dave Hartridge reported 2013 saw a 25 per cent increase on 2012. “We’re providing food to 115 to 145 people each week, from single people to families. All have been referred because of a sudden financial crisis.

It’s the inability to plan caused by benefit changes, administrative errors, and the uncertainty of zero hours contracts that strikes people.”

Playgroup manager Julie Seward said: “Parents have again been very generous in helping the foodbank, it’s an important charity which steps in when there’s nowhere to turn to in an emergency.”

Growing school at the centre of Haydon Wick Haydonleigh Primary School is currently undergoing a £4 million building project to meet the needs of families across North Swindon and accommodate a further 30 pupils each year to create a three form entry school.

Ninety children per year have been admitted since September 2012 and building works are taking place in three stages, with the first due to open in February.

Explaining the new facilities headteacher Frances Billinge, above, said: “The first phase comprises the main two storey block of 15 classrooms, including a purpose-built unit for our foundation stage learners. In addition, there will be a studio, a performing arts space with fixed staging and group work areas. Outside there will be a new playground and an exciting play space for the foundation stage.”

At the moment several classes are accommodated in mobiles while building works are taking place. Commenting on the next steps Frances said: “We’re all eagerly awaiting the anticipated finish date when children

transfer to the new building.

“Then there will be the tricky task of joining the new building to the existing structure.

“The existing school hall will be enlarged and the admin offices extended around a new front entrance which will be close to a larger car park.

“Then we’ll be able to say good-bye to the mobiles. All being well this will be in good time for the new school year in September.”

• Haydonleigh Primary opened with a single class in a mobile on the Greenmeadow Primary site in September 1995 before the permanent single form entry, 210 place, building was ready in January 1996.

It quickly became a two form entry school with mobiles on site. By 2017 the school will have grown year on year to accommodate 630 children.

MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It!) offers a free 10 week healthy lifestyle programme for 5 to 16-yearolds who are above a healthy weight, and includes parents and carers in the fun. Participants learn about healthy eating, nutrition and exercise.

There are three MEND Programmes starting in January: • MEND 5-7 from Wednesday 22 January, 3.45pm to 5.30pm at the Oasis; • MEND 7-13 meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from Tuesday 21 January, 5pm to 7pm, at Link Centre; • MEND Teens for 13-16s meets Mondays and Wednesdays from Monday 20 January, 4pm to 6pm, at Stratton Community Leisure Centre.

The question is, does MEND work?

The programme run by Swindon Council has been going for around eight years and overall has a high level of satisfaction from children and parents who commit to it.

Two customers from the course that completed in early December were dad Mark Shannon from Old Town and mum Jo Wilson who used to live in Redhouse. Both had attended twice a week for 10 weeks with their children Edan and Lilly-May. Mark said he had seen a poster at Great Western Hospital when Edan

had to have an operation on a foot, damaged partly because he was carrying too much weight and not exercising enough. “We’ve both enjoyed the sessions because we’ve learnt a lot about making the right choices of buying food with high energy but low sugar and fat.

“Edan has also got back into exercise. The guidance from the instructors has been really good and he’s met a nice group of children.”

For Edan the visit to Asda West Swindon was the best session. “We looked at food labeling and searched for foods with lower sugar and fat, then we tried different food. It was good because some was food I had not tried before.”

The Asda trip also made an impression on Lilly-May. “It was an amazing session,” said Jo. “The kids went round as MEND detectives to hunt out food with high sugar and fat content. It was a real eye-opener for all of us.

“We’ve become much more careful shoppers now. I’ve learnt to say no, but Lilly-May knows why I’ve said it. Her confidence has grown so much and she’s joined two girls’ football teams.

We’re a much happier household for doing the MEND course.”

Former Westlea man Steve George recently took time out from a hike along the Great Wall of China to brush up on some history from his home town.

Steve, a journalist now based in China as the editor of That’s Beijing features and lifestyle magazine, is pictured, with Mark Child’s encyclopaedic history of the town called The Swindon Book.

As well as the perfect companion for homesick travellers, the book, described as ‘an alphabetical romp through Swindon’s history,’ is also likely to have found its way into Christmas stockings across the town.

Town’s loudest citizen passes

Fred Ferris, Swindon’s first and only town crier of modern times, passed away on 23 November, after 15 years in the voluntary position.

Fred, who lived in Penhill, was born in Swindon in 1931 and, apart from a stint of national service, worked on the busses for many years, retiring in 1997 as a bus inspector with Stagecoach.

In the same year Fred entered a competition held at Old Town Festival to find somebody to represent the town at events across the land. His impressive performance landed him the unpaid job, which he held until his death at the age of 82.

Fred was a fine ambassador for Swindon at town crier competitions across Britain wearing a uniform based on a Great Western Railway station master. They always included ‘shouts’ extolling the town’s attractions.

In 2010 he was nominated for the

Mayor’s Pride of Swindon Award and received a certificate for his commitment to the town.

He won the ‘Best Dressed Town Crier’ award at many competitions, and in 2012 was presented with the prestigious Loyal Company of Town Criers Badge of Honour in front of the full borough council, where he received a standing ovation.

International Women’s Day to call for a halt in violence against women On 8 March Swindon will be celebrating International Women’s Day at venues in and around Central Library, with this year’s special theme being to end violence against women and uphold respect.

Describing the need to highlight this issue, author and event coordinator Rosa Matheson said: “Violence against women is not just a woman’s problem. It’s a problem for all of us, men and women alike. We want to raise awareness of how violence is

not just physical – it can also be about lack of respect.”

International Women’s Day was first marked in 1908 and although women’s rights have improved in many countries, with better access to education, employment and a great deal more choice, there are still inequalities in pay and more instances of violence against women than men.

The Swindon branch of Soroptimist International, the global network of women advocating for increased

education and empowerment of women, will be taking part in this year’s activities.

Swindon Women’s Refuge, which takes in abused women and their children up to 18 years, will be present to raise awareness of their work.

History magazine clocks up its first year The publishers of Swindon Heritage are celebrating a successful first year and are looking forward to producing at least four more editions in 2014.

Launched in January 2013 as a not-for-profit social enterprise, the quarterly magazine is approaching 500 subscribers, and the current winter edition is now on sale.

“When we launched the magazine we really didn’t know how it would be received,” said editor Graham Carter.

“Nothing like it had ever been published in Britain before. That’s scary when you have put your own money into it to get it off the ground, but we have some loyal readers and the support of lots of people, not least other local historians, who generously give us access to their archives.”

What a year we had in 2013!

An eventful twelve months that has seen new additions to businesses within Swindon’s town centre, regenerations underway to create a brand new car park and a development with a cinema and new restaurants- plus, with all the events we held in the town centre, there is much to look forward to!

The Opera and Last Night Of The Proms were also broadcast from The Big Screen at Wharf Green; to fantastic crowds of music and arts lovers who waved their flags for Britain; whilst joining in with some singing and dancing to the fantastic Nathan Jones and his Allstar Jazz Band! This year also welcomed the return of Jahmene Douglas and our fantastic local acts to light up the town centre for Christmas - plus we launched the much awaited festive market and were joined by none other than the iconic Coca-Cola truck to really top off the festivities!

Parish discusses managing Redhouse community hall

Pre-school groups and uniformed youth groups in North Swindon are ready to use a community meeting place at Redhouse Village Centre as soon as it’s built, but an organisation to take responsibility to manage the facility needs to be in place before start of construction.

Funding for the £1.25 million building off Frankel Avenue was secured by Swindon councillor Vera Tomlinson.

Ian Jankinson, chair of Blunsdon St Andrew Parish Council, said council members met with Cllr Tomkinson and members of the borough localities team before Christmas to discuss a business plan for the building. “We need to work as quickly as we can and begin to put together a governing structure and a robust financial plan to work to.

“The centre must become sustainable as soon as we can make it so.”

The management team at Freshbrook Community Centre have taken on Roughmoor Social Hall from Swindon Council.

Cricklade Art Group are already preparing for their next exhibition, which will be held during the Cricklade Festival in June.

Former St Johns Ambulance schools’ trainer Gilly Boote from Devizes has set up Trust First Aid, offering training for children and young people via schools, Scout and Brownie groups and youth clubs.

Commenting on the importance of learning first aid Gilly said: “It’s such an important life skill, giving children the confidence to be effective in an emergency situation, but also fostering communication, care, compassion and team working.”

Town leads the way in turning wheelie bin waste into a source of power The rubbish that Swindon residents throw out is no longer heading for holes in the ground for which the council taxpayer has been paying £3 million a year in landfill taxes. From early-January it will be turned into material to be sent to power stations to generate energy for the national grid.

With a £6 million investment by Swindon Council in a state of the art facility at Waterside Park, refuse trucks will now unload household wheelie bin waste onto one end of a giant conveyor belt which separates metals, grit, wood, and food waste using sieves and powerful magnets.

The material emerging at the other end is dried to an industry standard, compressed, baled and then sent to power stations for incineration.

“The system is widely used in North America and Europe but this is the first in Britain,” said production manager Sean Magee, above. “Our

installation has capacity to process 100,000 tonnes of waste a year - from the town’s wheelie bins and bulk waste from the adjacent disposal site.

“After recyclables and moisture have been extracted, we will have 50,000 tonnes of recovered fuel quality material.”

Installation trials started in early December and the system was fully up and running before Christmas.

By mid-January Swindon will have reduced landfill waste by 98 per cent.

Sean added that residents need to keep separating recyclables for curbside collection so that the waste processing equipment can work to maximum efficiency.

The well-attended protests that have taken place at the Civic Offices since the summer demonstrate the strength of feeling against the plans for animal bedding manufacturer Hippofan to burn 55,000 tons of wood each year at an incineration site on Darby Close.

Cheney Manor resident and campaign leader Paul Saunders, a former military engineer currently working as a services manager at Alcatel Lucent in Westlea, has been researching the history of the proposal, and has discovered numerous decisions concerning the issue, which he described as “puzzling.”

He said: “Too many things are wrong, but haven’t been challenged.

For example, initially a site at Groundwell was being considered, but this was dropped in favour of Cheney Manor.

“Simply from a transport point of view, this doesn’t make sense, since access via the A419 would be more straightforward than using Akers Way as an HGV route.”

Paul said the NO campaign is not motivated by ‘nimbyism’, and that no site in Swindon is suitable for an incineration plant of this type.

“My fear is that the proposals are driven by financial considerations

alone, with no regard for the environment or what is best for local residents.”

Paul is also claiming there was a failure to follow due process in consulting with surrounding businesses and residents prior to submitting a planning application, and that a “cynical” attempt was made to falsely position Hippofan as a green energy provider, under the name Pure Green Ltd. He is also pointing to alleged inaccuracies in the planning statement and “unrealistic” figures in the manufacturer’s business plan, including “unachievable claims of synergy with Swindon Borough Council’s own waste processing facility,” as well as other concerns.

Ahead of an anticipated public consultation in February, Paul said: “I feel that a lot of people have been duped by Pure Green, and I sense that Forward Swindon and Swindon Borough Council have made decisions that they are embarrassed to turn away from. Of all the business types that we could and should be attracting into Swindon, this is entirely the most inappropriate.”

Can I just ask those people riding horses on footpaths around Peatmoor Lagoon to clear up their horse mess after them, the same way that we responsible dog owners do?

Several times I have had to make sure my grandchildren do not end up with horse manure on their shoes, bike or scooter tyres. Recently I had to help a disabled man driving an electric wheelchair to negotiate around a mound of muck that was left in the middle of the footpath.

Why is it thought acceptable to leave this stuff exactly where it falls. If it’s dogs mess, we are liable to a £1,000 fine - rightly so, but it should be the same for horse riders.

And the congregation of All Saints Church in Lydiard Millicent, rebuilt around 1457, have had over 500 years practice of using toilet euphemisms.

In recent years, if caught short, they’ve either had to pop across the road to Lydiard Millicent Parish Hall, or cross their legs if it’s being used for another purpose. Now the members are raising £50,000 to build a toilet.

Rev Tricia Roberts said: “There was an enthusiastic response from churchgoers, young and old, who took part in photo-shoots with Sarah Lingham to illustrate well-known expressions like ‘answer the call of nature,’ ‘powder your nose’ and ‘take a leak.’

“The challenge has been to create a washroom in a Grade II listed building whilst meeting building requirements. As the boiler is over 50 years old we’re also replacing it with a more efficient unit. Sixteen church members even managed to squeeze into the small boiler room which is will become the new superloo to illustrate ‘the little boys’ room.’

The aim is to unveil the toilet by August 2014. ‘The Washroom Calendar’ at £4.50 is one of a number of fundraising activities. Copies are available from All Saints Vicarage, The Butts, Lydiard Millicent SN5 3LR. Tel 01793 772417.

Residents’ association aims to become ‘the voice of Toothill’ A new residents’ association has been launched and is going from strength to strength in Toothill.

It was formed after resident Susan Camburn expressed her concerns to Gail Light, localities facilitator for West Swindon about being unaware of key issues affecting the area. These include changes to ward electoral boundaries, the local primary school becoming an academy and a millionpound lottery grant for Toothill.

The association is hoping to become ‘the voice of Toothill,’ as well as being a place to find information and where residents can discuss ideas

to improve where they live.

The group has applied for a Swindon Council New Shoots grant to cover set-up costs.

Toothill councillor Jim Robbins said: “I’m really pleased that the association has been set up; I’m looking forward to working with them to help make Toothill an even better place to live.”

Toothill million key dates set out on magnetic calender

Residents of Toothill will receive a 2014 calender with this edition of The Link.
