occupied providing a broad cross section of commodities, with an emphasis on food. "We'll be making a stall available to a local community group every week and also running a free coach pick-up service for the elderly in the West Swindon area." Commenting on the type of market his company will run, Mr Evans said, "We hope to create a continental feel with brightly striped canopies over a good community feeling about it." Link Centre becomes a fire station
Emergency call-out. The fire engine emerges from the library garage at the Link Centre
West Swindon has its own fire engine, five months in advance of the completion ofa fire station on Westmead Way close to Westlea. Following successful discussions between Thamesdown Council, Wiltshire Fire Brigade and Wiltshire County Council's Library Service, the appliance is being stored at night and over the weekends in the garage normally used for library vehicles at the Link Centre. Assistant Divisional Officer Simon Routh-Jones said the staff for the West Swindon station had been recruited some time ago and using the garage at the Link Centre from 2 January gave the fire service an opportunity to enhance their cover in advance of the new station opening sometime between April and June this year. "Eighteen firemen have been recruited or volunteered to move to the new station. All have moved into the West Swindon area so that they
can respond within minutes. Six men will be on call at all times. "The growth of Swindon has had an effect on response times. Having an appliance and crew in the West Swindon area will improve the cover we provide. "The discussions between the Link Centre and the Library service have been very positive and the outcome is a benefit to the community. The fire engine will also cover parts of north Swindon in conjunction with an appliance from Stratton St. Margaret." In exchange for the garage facilities at the Link Centre, the fire service will be providing a garage for a mobile Library at Swindon fire station for the next few months. Commenting on the new role for the Link Centre, centre coordinator John Fisher said that the Link had been built with flexibility of use in mind and the council was pleased to cooperate with the emergency services.
