Shaw Ridge Leisure Park plans on view After months of waiting, the plans for West Swindon's 210,000 square foot leisure park on the side of Shaw Ridge have been made public. The scheme will be on show in The Mall at the Link Centre during the week starting 21st January.

The Shaw Ridge site is owned by Thamesdown Council who selected Carter Commercial Developments Limited from a shortlist of schemes to develop the site. Since August, Carters havebeen in discussion with the Council's Planning Department refining the proposals. The public consultation exercise at the end of the month is being carried out before the project is put before Thamesdown Council's Planning Committee on 27th February.

On pages 13 to 17, The Link magazine is pleased to provide details of the development to the people of West Swindon.

In an exclusive interview with The Link, Michael Oldrieve, Aquisitions Manager from Carters described the range of facilities in the Leisure Park.

"The Shaw Ridge Leisure Park will provide a range of integrated facilities of a quality rarely found in this country. The participating companies are all leaders within their fields and will offer a very high standard of leisure provision.

"A central feature of Shaw Ridge will be the 10 screen cinema operated by the newly formed CIC, UA (UK) Limited who already have 22 complexes with 200 screens around the country. They are a major force in film production and distribution in America and have been largely responsible for the growth in cinema going audiences in this country over recent years.

"1 would add that their prices are reasonable so that whole families can go to the movies together, though they might watch different films on any one visit!

"Another exciting facility will be the 32 lane 10 pin 'Superbowl' to be operated by First Leisure who run, for example, the piers and conference centres at Blackpool. Ten pin bowling has seen a revival in recent years and Swindon's new bowling centre will be the most up to date in the country.

"Underneath the Superbowl will be a nightclub/disco aimed at the adult market.

Swindon hasn't a venue where adults can enjoy themselves and this facility with its restaurant and bars will be a considerable attraction.

"As far as refreshment is concerned, next to the cinema the well known independent brewers Morlands will run a 120 seat restaurant aimed at the families and local business employees visiting the Leisure Park. On a seperate part of the site, we will see Swindon's first Pizza Hut, a restaurant with over 100 seats. It will also provide a takeaway service and they are considering home deliveries as well.

"The other large element in the Leisure Park will 150 bed, five star hotel with conference centre, restaurant and leisure club. This will be run by DcVere Hotels who manage some of the most prestigious hotels in the

country. They see West Swindon as an ideal location for their hotel "Overall, around 294 full time jobs and 198 part-time jobs will be created by the Leisure Park. All the operators on site run training schemes; DeVere Hotels has its own three year YTS/ technical training programme with a recognised qualification attached to it.

"Obviously such the design of such a large development so close to housing has to be treated carefully. We have tried very hard to minimise the effect of the Leisure Park by building into the hillside, by using natural materials and siting car parks and entrances well away from residential areas. At the Link Centre we will have large plans and a scale model on display and there will be opportunity to ask detailed questions about the Leisure Park.

"I'm looking forward to talking to people in West Swindon about this scheme."

FRONT PIECE Sewage Works Re-development Consultation Meeting on 9th Jan. Thames Water are to spend ÂŁ20 million updating the Barnfield Road Sewage Works and want to talk to people in West Swindon about the proposals. A consultation meeting has been arranged for 9th January.

The scheme is being put forward as an alternative to building a complete new sewage works outside Swindon.

Four years ago the water authority transported 1,000 tons of raw sludge cake from the treatment plant byroad causing great protest at the smell and an eventual ban on such movements.

However the authority now has 5,000 tons of decomposing sludge stored on site and inadequate capacity to cope with the increasing demand for sewage treatment in the future.

Plans now before Thamesdown Council's Planning Committee propose rebuilding part of the existing plant and installation of equipment which will cope with the sewage from a population of 185,000. At present the works now serves a population of 150,000.

In addition to greater capacity, new equipment is required to meet more stringent waste removal standards. The existing biological filters have difficulty in cleansing the effluent during periods of cold weather.

The Water Authority say that the smell will be greatly reduced by the increased capacity to treat sludge. Hence raw sludge will not have to be stored on site.

Engineers from Thames Water will have plans on display and will discuss the project with interested residents on Monday 9th January, 7.30p.m., in the Community Room at Westlea School.

-There will also be a public meeting with representatives of the Water Authority at Rodboume Mannington Community Centre, Morris Street, Swindon on 17th January, 7.30p.m.

TOOTHILL 4 After School Club to go ahead Toothill Church 10 years on Toothill's After School Club is to restart on 1st April, exactly a year after it closed down.

The club was very well supported by local children when it closed at the end of March 1988 following the withdrawal of staff.

Since then parents of the children have been campaigning vigorously to get Thamesdown Council Arts and Recreation Committee to provide the cash to keep the club going.

Although groups of parents and children lobbied the several Committee meetings, councillors refused to provide the backing they were demanding. Working on another front however, the parents have secured the financial support from the Allied Dunbar Staff Fund and the Thamesdown Community Trust.

Altogether, some 30 parents have been involved in the campaign over the last eight months, receiving assistance from local councillors and community workers. One of the parents, Diane Stuckey, said its great that the parents have reached their target. "We're really pleased by the backing from the charitable trusts. All the parents should be

very pleased with the decision.

We've stayed together and kept up the enthusiasm for the idea of an after school club.

"I would like to say a big thank you to the parents and our supporters."

The After School Club Campaign group are holding a meeting on 11th January, 8p.m. 930p.m. at Toothill Farm, Bodiam Drive to discuss how things should be organised, now that the cash to run after school activities has been found.

This includes the setting up of a management committee and the employment of club leaders. All parents who have children who might like to go to the club can attend, whether they have been involved in the the campaign or not.

• Although Thamesdown Council's Arts and Recreation Committee has not funded the Toothill After School Club, it has agreed to appoint a Play Development Worker for West Swindon from 1st April. This will involve working with other local groups wanting to start after school and holiday play activities.

A special service was held at the end of November to commemorate the dedication of Toothill Church in 1988. A 300 name petition calling for a primary school large enough to serve the children expected to live in Grange Park in years to come was presented to the chair of Wiltshire County Council's Education Committee in December.

The petition was co-ordinated

by Grange Park mother and teacher Eileen Sawyer assisted by local councillor Bob Pixton. They claim that the size of the proposed school off Hay Lane is just not big enough to cater for the 2,000 households in the area.

At a public meeting of parents in December, Mrs. Sawyer said the proposed eight classrooms would inevitably mean mobiles on the site which are very unsatisfactory. Ten classrooms on a larger site are required to cater for local children, unless the Education Authority expects some of the children from Grange Park to be placed in other primary schools.

The land off Hay Lane is being acquired by the County Council in a land swap deal with Bradley Homes. However part of the overall site will still be used for housing by Bradley's and this is creating problems according to Freshbrook councillor Bob Pixton.

"I have been comparing the planning applications for the school and the houses." said Coun. Pixton. "I was appalled to notice that the school site is now 5% less than on the original plans.

If this goes ahead, all our efforts for a larger school site will have been for nothing as the school and the adjacent housing boundaries will have been set."

Mrs. Sawyer and Coun. Pixton are urging people in Grange Park to write to the Chief Education Officer at Wilts. County Council calling for a site large enough to cater for all local children.

Alison Angell, last year's Miss Freshbrook, is set for a bright hairdressing career.

Alison, 17, who works at Freshbrook Village Centre's Cut 'n Dry salon, came top of her group of Youth Training Scheme first year trainees at Swindon College in November. The day release course is attended by 30 others who were assessed on attendance, practical and theory work, exam results and attitude.

"Its a good achievement and a lot of hard work; a real confidence builder." said Alison.

Cut 'n Dry proprietor Sue Collins said she was very pleased with Alison's work. "I'm really chuffed with Alison. I hope she carries on in the same way in the second year and throughout her career."

Dear Editor, The article in last months Link entitled 'Bangers and Mash Buy Out' contained some inaccuracies.

The £200 offered, was to compensate the two Scout Groups in the Western area, 1St Too thill and 1st Westlea, for monies that would be lost from the sale of Hot Dogs and Soup at the Firework Display. This, as you stated we have provided since the event started. It was not for the 1st Westlea Scout Group alone.

We also provided some Scouts to help Donaldsons marshall the crowds who attend the event.

If all goes without a hitch, Monday 9th January will see West Swindon's latest primary school opening its doors to its first pupils - four months late.

Salt Way is the area's eighth primary school and serves families in the Ramleaze and Middleleaze areas of Shaw. It should have been ready last August to accept children at the beginning of the school year. However later assurances by the builders and Wiltshire County Council that it would be ready at the end of November were wildly optimistic. A range of reasons were given for the delays including site problems and a tight building schedule.

Despite the lack of a building, the 'school' did start on time with ahead, three teachers and 24 children sharing classrooms and facilities at Shaw's Brookfield School.

"It has been frustrating," admitted headteacher Mrs. Sue Butcher, "but everybody has worked hard to accommodate us and we would like to thank them for their kindness."

Salt Way School, named after an ancient salt transportation route which passes closeby, moves to its building with 29 children. The photograph on the left, taken before Christmas, was the first occasion when all the children and staff were brought together according to Mrs. Butcher, seated rear left.

The next meeting of the Shaw Residents' Association takes place on Tuesday 10th Janaury, 745p.m. in Shaw Church, Old Shaw Lane. All residents of Shaw are invited.

But when she trailed in fourth place in the obstacle race and failed to answer a single general knowledge question my daughter observed that she obviously wasn't a brain surgeon, but just a housewife after all!

So there you are, fellow housewives, firmly at the bottom of the heap. Now I can understand why a child should see being a housewife as boring and mundane, because for a lot of us, for a lot of the time, it is. But where does the idea that housewives are totally lacking in brains and abilities come from? Television has a lot to answer for - it's hard to take anyone seriously when you know that they are worrying about the best way to keep the loo germfree, and running through the

rain to ask some man called Tom for help when their homes are in a mess. And the feminists have not helped either. I only feel bad about staying at home to bring up my own children when I meet a Career Woman who writes me off as a cabbage.

And then of course there are the politicians, bless 'em. For several years it was suggested that women should stay at home and stop taking jobs that any unemployed man would give his right arm for. (Actually I've never met a man who would dream of doing the sort of jobs most women do, but there may be one or two somewhere.) Now politicians are urging employers to lure women back to work, to tap 'an unused source of talent'. Who do they think they are kidding? The number of school leavers is dropping and they need a new supply of cheap labour. How long will it be before we are told that it is our duty as citizens to stop being 'Just housewives' and get back to work?

We can't win can we? So I've only made one resolution for 1989.

If anyone asks whether I work or not I'm going to say with pride, "I certainly do.

As Armenia tries to return to normality after the devastating earthquake which killed between 25,000 and 50,000 people and left many more grieving and homeless, Isobel Manook, wife of BoghosAwanes Manook(Dischekenian), pictured below, from Yarmouth Close, Toothlll, tries to answer the question

Who are the Armenians?

Since our marriage 11 years ago I have consistantly had difficulty in explaining that my husband is Armenian. Alas, as result of the earthquake in early December there are few folk that could not now at least point out Armenia on a map, but still little is known about these ancient people.

Ancient Armenia spread over Eastern Turkey into Iran, Iraq and the Soviet Union. The Armenian culture has been sustained by the religion they embraced around 300AD as the first Christian State.

In the course of quarter of a century between 1895 and 1920 the Armenian race lost one and a half million people by the gun or the bayonet, by deliberate starvation and by privation and pestilance. About a third of all Armenians in the world died a gruesome, painful death.

My husband's grandfather was such a victim of the young Turk Government and his widow plus six children began the long trek from what is now Turkey to Iraq, arriving two years later with two children still alive.

Armenians despite, or maybe because of, their many hardships have maintained a strong culture, keeping their language and Christian religion alive. Today apart from the three million in Soviet Armenia, there are at least another three million spread virtually over all the world.

They are reputed to consistantly exhibit a high intelligence and are successful in business and

professional life. They are noted for their humour in spite of their tragic history and are also noted to be excellent cooks and famous for their hospitality.

Often they are easily recognsable by the IAN ending of their surname (ours is DISCHEKENIAN) which means 'son of' and how many people know that singers Cher, Charles Aznavour(ian) or Gary Kasparov(ian), the Russian chess master, are Armenian?

My husband has an aunt and uncle who still live in Soviet Armenia but fortunately in Yerevan the capital which escaped the earthquake.

Along with one other Armenian family who live in Wanborough we have been heavily involved in Aid Armenia fundraising and have been staggered and humbled by the generosity of Swindon folk.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a very heartful thank you to those who gave so generously to help the rescue and rebuilding work.

Neil already spends a lot of time coaching youngsters and, as chair of the Wiltshire Lawn Tennis Council and its tournament committee, is well placed to see that tennis becomes one of the most popular participation sports in Swimdon.

The post of Tennis Development Officer is funded by Thamesdown Borough Council with a 50% grant from the Lawn Tennis Association Indoor Tennis Initiative for three years. The Delta Tennis Centre is financed by the Taylor Woodrow Property Company and the Lawn Tennis Association with the land being contributed by Thamesdown Council. The centre will be managed by the Council as an annex to the Link Centre and is due to open at the end of February.

The person who is going to get us all interested in tennis is preparing to meet as many people in the area as possible in the few weeks before West Swindon's Tennis Centre at the Delta Business Park opens.

Neil Allen has been involved in the West for a long time. At present he is a Project Manager in the Social and Economic Development Group of Thamesdown Borough Council responsible for Industrial and Commercial Development. As such he has coordinated the opening up and development of employment sites across the town and is currently very involved with the Shaw Ridge Leisure Park scheme.

However, he admits that when faced with the tough choice of whether to stay in a high powered job or give his life to tennis, there really was no decision to make.

"I've really enjoyed industrial development but in my heart, tennis was always going to win," says Neil. "People accuse me of eating, drinking and sleeping tennis and I will admit a passion for the game. Its a rare chance to bring your work and your interest together."

Swindon Wildcats captain and Link Centre Ice Hockey Development officer assess the position the Wildcats find themselves in Its actually right on par to what I have expected this season. The only thing different is that we have lost games I had down that we would win, and we have won games that were down as 40/60 chance.

I think this season our main goal was to tighten up our defense and finish in the middle of the league table. So far, our defense has been tightened up but our goal scoring now has disappeared. I think with the combination of both, the Wildcats will be a team not to overlook.

We played all the top teams at the start of the season and now with easier games ahead the 'Cats will look to stay far from the rele-

gation zone. Plans for the second half after the Christmas break is sweep January with 4 wins and start February in the same fashion.

Right now the 'Cats are a team that likes to play at home only losing one home game, but cannot string together a win on the road. Hopefully the plans of January will see the 'Cats win on the road and get back confidence lost early in the first half of the season.

Support throughout the first half has been exceptionally superb and the 'Cats would like to thank all the supporters for their backing and wish them a Happy New Year.

A Week with Ellen and Bill Bailey

We are Ellen and Bill Bailey who live in retirement flats at Prince Rupert Court, Freshbrook. We have been here two years now and are very happy. Our flat is an upstairs flat overlooking Gains- Bill is very partial to cake. Also we especially love the network of walk lanes around Freshbrook, all so easily accessible. In good weather I take Bill in my ageing car to Toothill Park. Here we sit on the seat and look across the lovely view to the M4 and watch the trains go by.

Monday is myexercise day. In the afternoon I trot along to the Link where I play badminton with the Evergreens.

After badminton I swim twelve lengths of the baths and feel on top of Bill and Ellen Bailey, looking forward to a the world. Definitely my golden anniversary best day!

On Tuesdays and Fridays, Bill again. Saturdays and Sundays is taken to a day centre called are quietly spent together. I go to Fessey House at Haydon Wick. church most Sundays. I get large print books from the excellent library. We find these are very helpful to our now tired eyes. Bill is almost completely deaf and now has sight in only one eye.

Some may think this is not a very inspiring life but we are happy and content. You see we have one great blessing. We still have each other, and in nine more months, God willing, we will celebrate our golden wedding.

The first one last summer, organised West Swindon by Under 5s, was an outstanding success and showed that parents with pre-school children are eager to give them as much experience as possible. The exhibition in The Mall at Link Centre during December brought forth a number of enquiries about the next festival.

Last year's event was organised by volunteers under the umbrella of the West Swindon Under 5s which is a broad based group of people interested in the needs of pre-school children.

West Swindon Under 5s have organised a meeting for Monday 16th January to discuss this a festival for this year. Mother & Child '89 An enormous event aimed at expectant parents and those with children up to ten years old will take place at Swindon's Oasis Leisure Centre, from Friday 17th March until Sunday 19th March.

Entitled Mother & Child '89, the exhibition will include most of the well known high street shops and producers of big name brands in attendance.

There will also be stands from craftsmen, toy makers and community based voluntary organisations such the Pre-School Playgroups Association and the National Childbirth Trust.

Entertainment, magic shows, creches, advice and information stands and virtually anything related to the nurturing of children will be on hand to make Mother & Child '89 a memorable event for all who visit. Up to 20,000 people are expected to attend.

RESOLUTIONS What's it got to do with me?

Until afew months ago Karen Stevenson from Eastleaze described herself as an ordinary person with a general interest in birds and wildlife. But her conscience was thoroughly shaken after reading an article on the destruction of tropical rain forest in Birds magazine.

Looking to the last year of this decade, we might refresh our memories of an area that seems finally to be getting the attention it deserves. Late '88 saw the Government realising that the environment, and 'green' issues, are important and not for cranks.

There has been considerable coverage of the damage being done to the Ozone layer, and to the 'Greenhouse' effect. What doesn't get covered are some of the contributing factors.

I discovered in November, that a consortium of commercial banks, including some well known high street names, are looking to loan $750 million of private money in 'co-financing with the world bank' to Brazil's power industry. So what? Well, this money would contribute to staggering environmental destruction, by helping to finance various hydro-electric projects. If these are to proceed over 20,000 square Km of rainforest will be flooded and over 70,000 of the indigenous peoples will be displaced. Another real shocker was that in late '88 an area of Amazonia the size of West Germany has been deliberately destroyed by fire transformed into a

charred wasteland. All this wanton destruction only makes Ecological matters worse than they already are.

The Worlds ecosystems are so intertwined that any miss-management will ultimately affect us all. No one wants their children or grandchildren to grow up into a world on the brink of self destruction. If this seems alarmist, just look at how fast the Ozone layer is being 'eaten away'. I have been convinced that it has got 'something to do with me', how about you?

Looking for Justice and Peace

by Ian Schagen Do you ever wonder if the world will get any better in the New Year, or if there's anything you can do about it? Members of the West Swindon Churches Justice and Peace Group try not to let all the bad news get them down, but to do something, however small, to make it a little better. The group contains a number of people from different backgrounds and with varying interests, and the things we do vary a lot too.

We meet occasionally on Sunday evenings to talk about world issues, and to pray about them. Some of us meet every month to write letters about prisoners of conscience, hoping in this way to help to get them released. Every other month there is a frugal 'Third World' lunch at one of the churches, at which we have a good time and raise money for the poor overseas. There is an 'action group' which writes letters about all kinds of issues and plans special events.

Some of these special events were associated with One World Week.

In '87 we performed some 'street theatre' and raised some eyebrows, nd perhaps some awareness. Last ctober we held a celebration at St

Peter's church centred on the theme of 'Peace'. Friends from east Swindon joined us and about 80 people took part in a variety of activities to illustrate 'making peace with the planet'.

Unless you have a friend willing to escort you to a community group, it can be difficult breaking into existing activities if you are new to West Swindon, or new to motherhood.

Several groups have been setup to help new arrivals find their way in the community. They meet on: Mondays between 1p.m. and 230p.m. The Newcomers welcome parents with toddlers in the Community Suite at the Link Centre.

Tuesdays, 1030p.m. to midday. Arrivals Officer Pam Pixton holds a coffee morning for anybody who needs information about West Swindon, again in the Community Suite at the Link.

Thursday, from 10a.m. until 12 noon. There is a coffee morning in The Village Inn at Shaw Village Centre for anybody who has moved to Shaw and would like to meet a neighbour.

Friday, 10.30a.m. until midday. The Locobus mobile community centre is parked on Sparcells Drive in Sparcells. The bus is acting as a temporary meeting place for coffee and a chat until a community building can be provided in the area.

West Swindon's Gateway Superstore welcomed parents and children from the West Swindon Family Project to their staff day on Sunday 11th December.

Twenty seven children and 19 adults attended the all day opening where there were clowns, free merry-go-round rides, entertainment and a free lunch for the youngsters.

"We had a wonderful day," said Bobbie French, volunteer worker with the Family Project.

"We would like to say a big thank you to the manager and staff at Gateway for giving the families an early Christmas present."

The Desperate Housing Dilemma Despite a 130 name petition of objection from residents of Castleton Road in Middleleaze, Thamesdown Council's Planning Committee has given the go-ahead to a scheme to build 79 council houses near Roughmoor Way in Shaw. Local councillor Tony Free considers the problems faced bythe Council in trying to provide public housing, particularly for those left behind by market forces.

I don't intend to delve deeply into the ethics of the sale of Council houses at discounts of up to 50%, but it is important for people to realize how we as a local council are able to spend the cash received from the sale of Housing Stock.

You could be forgiven for the comment "why don't you build houses with the money you receive?" The answer is that we do, but the government only allows us to spend 20% of the money we receive, i.e. in the case of a house discounted by 50% we can spend only 10% of thevalueof the house.

The cost of a starter home is now over ÂŁ50,000 which is beyond the reach of most young single income couples and in fact, many two income couples, so the need for rented accommodation is clear. Inability to keep up mortgage repayments is now becoming one of the main reasons for homelessness and yet building societies and banks apply more and more pressure to bring people into the housing market.

Homelessness in Swindon has now reached epidemic proportions and there is every indication that it will become considerably worse. This fact was brought home to me recently when I tried to arrange emergency accommodation for a couple and their children with nowhere to go. Not only was the emergency accommodation full

but there were half a dozen families also in desperate situations already waiting for vacancies in accommodation that is only considered by those in the direst need.

As at August 1st 1988 the Council waiting list stood at 5,390 with houses becoming available at the rate of 950 per year which although horrifying enough is put in perspective by the fact that the Council has also received 1,368 applications from homeless people over the last year.

To fully appreciate the impact of these figures you must realize that we are referring to the number of applications and that the number of people affected is nearer to 20,000 (the population of Swindon is less than 160,000).

The Housing Department is not the most popular of departments with the public, but it should be realised that the emotional pressure of having to say no is so great that some of the jobs within the department have to be rotated.

As a Local Councillor I also am subjected to ever increasing stress by the depressing nature of the cases I deal with, and I feel I am qualified to lay the blame for the current housing situation firmly at the door of this Government.

Keep it safe in '89 Last year, car break-ins in West Swindon increased dramatically according to Freshbrook's beat policeman TrevorCarlton. Afew simple steps could prevent all the aggravation when it happens During 1988 there was an alarming increase in vehicle break ins a 43% increase in the offence in West Swindon.

In many cases the offence could have been avoided. The owners, wrongly believing that items left in the vehicle are of little value to any other person, apart from themselves, leave a brief case, sports bag, handbag or toolbox for all walking by to clearly see.

Unfortunately our would-be thief takes the chance that the bag might contain something of value.

They break into the vehicle often causing damage and steal the property.

This, needless to say, causes distress to the owners, not to mention the inconvenience of having to repair the damage and replace the stolen items.

This crime, with a little help and forethought, could be greatly reduced if only we, the drivers: *Remove all items regardless of value from our cars; 'Make sure the vehicle is locked; 'Where possible, clear out the garage and get the vehicle off the road.

Anglers to be hooked on Peatmoor Lagoon A fishing club catering for young anglers, retired people and anglers with a disability is being organised in West Swindon. A meeting is being called for 17th January to get the club organised.

The club will be based at Peatmoor Lagoon, the ten acre lake between Shaw and Roughmoor villages. The lagoon was designed as a flood control feature and forms part of the Peatmoor Open Space. This contains an ancient woodland, wild flora

Because of the range of possibly conflicting activities going on around the lagoon, Thamesdown Council's Arts and Recreation Committee has agreed that anglers permitted to use the lake will be restricted to the young, the elderly and the disabled.

The Borough of Thamesdown's Arts & Recreation Committee has decided that the lagoon at Peatmoor should be used by a newly formed angling club catering for the above groups.

Starting on 16th January, the display will have information about groups as diverse as the Citizens Advice Bureau, Women's Health Groups, Relate (Marriage Guidance), Samaritans, Home-Start (for families in stress) the tranquillizer support group and many more.

There will be leaflets and advice on how everybody shoulo be concerned about their own mental health and well being and those around them.

Slimmer by willpower (and a little help) Nineteen eighty eight was a good year for Karen Davey of Freshbrook. She got rid of 7 stones of unwanted weight and has become a new person.

When she reached nearly 17 stone she decided enough was enough. "I had never been overweight," explained Karen. "But after three pregnancies in three years, it just became difficult to control the weight. I was eating endlessly as an excuse.

"I was shocked when my mother said I looked 40 and not 28. I started reading magazines and cutting down; the first two weeks were the hardest. Then I joined a Slimmer class run by Margaret Sherman at Freshbrook Community Centre. The discussions, advice and encouragement were a great help. lam still trying to loose a few more pounds but they're as difficult as the first few."

A meeting for all interested anglers will take place at 17th January, 7.30pm in the Lydiard Park Visitor Centre to set the club up.

Family raises nearly £400 A Toothill family presented a cheque for £376 in December to the Lady Hoare Trust, a national charity working with children suffering from arthritis and physical handicap.

Dale and Ann Mooney of Edington Close have received help and advice from the trust concerning their three children, Luke, 8, Ryan, 5, and Keegan,2, who suffer from a variety of complaints which place a strain on the family.

The cash was raised through a number of events. A family friend Steve Hulme, of Cirencester's Prestige Auto Repairs, shaved off his beard, the big family dog took part in a guess the weight of the dog competition and a guess the teddy's name competition was run.

Appeals Organiser Leslie Henderson, for the Lady Hoare Trust, said it was very nice when a family helped by the trust raises funds for it. The charity is entirely funded by voluntary effort and receives no state backing.

A Date for women A major event is being planned for women thinking of returning to work or setting up their own businesses.

With Christmas out of the way, many householders maybe thinking of what small building works need to be done in and around the house.

Finding a local builder or decorator can be difficult, especially if the job is a small one.

Toothill resident Ron Ahrens has been specialising in West Swindon for the last eight months after 25 years working as a builder and decorator in London. His experience in carpentry, brick laying, plastering and related skills means he can take on any job asked of him.

January is not too soon for implementing your New Year's resolution for a garden to rival those in the magazine glossies this summer. The action is best taken indoors though, since cold, wet soil is happier left alone until the warner weather. All the Christmas gifts and baubles have been cleared from the garden centres now and you should find instead their new season's stock of seeds to choose from.

My husband's mother scarcely ever buys plants for her garden.

The new patches of colour that appear in her garden each year are all grown from packets of seed from perennial plants; such as lupins, foxgloves and aquilegia.

She sows these in January; a time I have always thought a little early for sowing; but each year she produces these marvelous plants that flower later in the summer. I think her special ingredientisTLC - tender loving care.

She always sows into a half seed -tray brim-full with compost.

The surface is slightly firmed and watered and onto this the seeds are sown. A light covering of compost is sprinkled over the surface and then the tray is covered over with a piece of plastic from an old polythene bag. Then it is placed on a windowsill where it will receive plenty of light without being baked by prolonged

sunny spells.

I think there are several pointers to successful seed raising here.

First, there is the seed tray; which holds enough compost to stay evenly moist and with a surface area large enough to take advantage of what warmth there is.

Flower pots would tend to be cooler, because of their depth, and small margarine tubs would tend to dry out too quickly. Secondly, the compost used is a peat-based one; which means it will hold the warmth. It could be made yet lighter with perlite added. Next, the compost is watered before see sowing; this prevents seeds being washed down into the compost and then failing to make it to the surface again. I have heard a tip for very fine seeds.

The compost is covered with a layer of fine moss peat after firming to make an even bed for germination, rather like marzipan on a fruit cake. Finally, the plastic covering maintains humidity and so protects the young seedlings until their leaves have spread.

Enough of the technicalities!

Imagine a drift of aquilegia or lupins in rainbow shades, or a carpet of pansies or geums. You may be more or less successful in the germination game, but unless you chance the seed in sowing there will be no plants at all.

A good resolution to make now is to decide to enter West Swindon's first ever garden competition. The West Swindon Gardening Club, which meets at the Link Centre, is planning to invite residents to enter their gardens for- judging in the summer. Details will be published in future issues of The Link.

QUICK STEW Serves 3-4 450gm can tomatoes 450gm can baked beans I smoked pork sausage (Mattesons or Herta) 250gm Empty the cans of tomatoes and beans into a large saucepan. Unwrap sausage, remove the skin, and chop into bite sized pieces. Add to the tomatoes and beans and heat gently to boiling. Serve with bread and butter or mashed potatoes.

2 big fish fillets (weighing about 1216oz) lSoz can tomatoes 4oz green grapes (optional) Rinse the fish under cold tap. Lay in shallow ovenproof dish, skin side down. Empty can of tomatoes evenly over them. Halve and deseed grapes.

Arrange on top of fish.

Put lid on (or cover closely with foil).

Bake in preheated oven Gas Mk 5 (1 90C or 375F) for 40 minutes. Serve with mashed potatoes.

Sadly the planners did not allow for land or buildings for specific organised clubs. This may well be the reason for a lack of activities, particularly for the 13 to 17 year old age group.

Obviously there are the traditional and wellestablished scouts and guides but local young people may like to know about Greendown Air Training Corps, one of three flights around Swindon attached to Swindon 1244 5quadron, with headquarters in Upham Road.

Nationally the Corps is divided nto Wings and Swindon 1244 quadron is part of the Dorset md Wilts Wing. This can be further split up into detached lights of which Greendown is )ne.

Generally speaking it is :hought that cadet organisations )nly accept boys but since 1980 ;irls have been allowed to join. t Greendown our number of emale cadets have been steadily ncreasing. This, we not only want 'ut encourage and the rules and Lctivlties are the same for both nale and female.
