Members of the Swindon Branch of the Chernobyl Childrens’ Life Line (CCLL) were thrown into confusion when they heard the trip was likely to be cancelled. Families in the Swindon area were looking forward to welcoming the children from a small rural village located in an area affected by contamination from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. A month’s respite away from the radiated zone can increase their life expectancy by two years.

“We were very sad at the thought they may not join us for Christmas but our hearts felt most for the poor children,” said CCLL chair Gin McGiffin. “Many of them come from households where parents are alcoholic and all are extremely poor.

False promises and rejection are their way of life and I didn’t want to let these children down.”

Sadness gave way to frantic activity on 6 December when Gin

received confirmation that the children would be coming in a few days.

With support from local businesses, she was able to put back together an action packed schedule of activities which included energetic visits to Next Generation Kids and Jolly Roger, pizza making at Domino’s, ice skating, Tae Kwon Do, bowling and a trip to the fire station.

There were free dental checks from Brendon Ball’s Freshbrook practice and some children had to have emergency treatment. Four were given glasses after sight tests at Specsavers.

Three of the youngsters were old hands as they had been to Swindon before. As CCLL can only fund one visit per child, their £300 air fares were paid by their host families or sponsors.

Forty years on from The Silver Book the plan could become a reality • 19,000 in the urban area. This includes the houses still to be built in Priory Vale, the Front Garden and possibly Commonhead (by Coate Water); • 12,000 in a strategic urban extension to the east of Swindon (equal to West Swindon) between the A420 and Wanborough village; • 1,200 in other parts of borough, i.e. Highworth, Wroughton and within the town; • 2,000 in strategic urban extensions. This could be at Tadpole Farm north of Oakhurst, which is already owned by developers Crest Nicolson and within Swindon’s boundaries. It has good access to the A419 and the M4 as well as shopping closeby.

• 3,000 as an urban extension to Swindon in North Wiltshire. There was already an outstanding requirement to provide land for another 1,000 homes from an earlier planning enquiry but this number has been trebled.

This could be at Ridgeway Farm, on the other side of Purton Road from Peatmoor. This area was originally included in the western expansion in the early 1970s but a planning inspector in the early 1980s determined that Purton Road be the development boundary.

The RSS report is now in the hands of the Government Office for the South West and is likely to be adopted as the development strategy for the future.

Swindon Council will have to incorporate its requirements into its own Core Strategy plans which are unlikely to be adopted until 2010.

However the RSS report could be seen by housing developers as the green light to build on their existing land interests and they could try to get planning permission to build in advance of an agreement to develop the town in a strategic way.

To show off the range of material that could be featured, there will be live wall casts of activity in Wharf Green, news and sports from the BBC, promotion of local community and arts events and content made by local video producers.

Carol Heneghan, Director of Marketing at the New Swindon Company, said the Big Screen, the first in southern England, would bring a new dimension to the town centre. “Wharf Green is the first area to be redeveloped since we unveiled our plans for town centre regeneration.

Anybody visiting the town since September will have seen the work on new hard and soft landscaping.

The BBC Big Screen will bring a real vibrancy and animation to the area, something that has been missing for a while. It will become a major focus where people enjoy events together.”

The February 2007 Link outlined the sites around the town centre identified for regeneration. Since then: • building the new Central Library on Regent Circus has progressed apace and it should open in November; • MUSE were chosen as developers for The Exchange, a 15 year project to rebuild the land around the bus station, where the old post office, bus depot and Salvation Army hostel were located;

• Modus Developments were granted planning permission to redevelop the Granville Street site, between Commercial Road and Regent Street. Debenhams will be one of the anchor stores, alongside a major food retail outlet; • Permission has been given to Ashfield Land and Parkridge Developments to build apartments, restaurants, offices and a multiscreen cinema on the old Swindon College site on Regent Circus.

“The next twelve months will see further developments in the town centre, all of which are moving us towards the goal of regeneration,” said Ms Heneghan.

She identified some key milestones to look out for in the first half of the year: • In January the development agreement for The Exchange was signed. This project has now been renamed ‘Union Square;’ • Wharf Green will be completed in March with the Big Screen lighting up in April; • The former Salvation Army homeless hostel on Corporation Street will be demolished in March.

For nearly 30 years there has been considerable confusion at the top of Toothill where six roads are affected by the problem. Toothill ward councillor Mary Martin, above, said, “most of the complaints are from people living in houses that front onto Idovers Drive and a few on Flint Hill, neither of which are used for postal address purposes.

These are Belsay, Kirkstall, Luddesdown, Icomb, Queenborough and White Castle.

“If you don’t know the area it is very confusing; I sympathise with residents whose deliveries go astray. It’s also a great concern if emergency services cannot find a house quickly.”

Ted Spalding, whose house is addressed as Beverley but fronts onto Idovers Drive, has been complaining for years about the confusion and was featured in the September 2007 Link after a fire crew was delayed by driving into the wrong part of Beverley.

Redhouse meeting delayed whilst pub design is worked out

A long promised meeting to discuss the next stage of Redhouse Village Centre has been put off until March at least, when it is hoped that the pub operators and Swindon Council planners will have agreed the appropriate appearance of the building for the site.

Responding to criticism that Crest is demanding too high a price for the church site, he said the company was following the guidance set out in the Section 106 legal agreement for developments of this kind.

“After a relatively slow start, development of the village centre is now accelerating,” said Mr Cain.

“We will see a lot of change in the coming months and a good part of the centre nearing completion by this time next year.”

We were losing around 1,000 litres of water an hour; it was just disappearing. The pipework has been checked thoroughly and we have concluded that the force of the water has washed away the grouting in the run off channels underneath and soaked into the surrounding soil.

“Work to regrout the site in the Spring has been authorised and we hope to have the fountains back in action by the summer.”

He added that the cost of maintaining the public areas of district centre, including the fountains, is shared between Asda Walmart and the other tenants on the site.

New head for Nova in September

After 20 years as a headteacher in Swindon, and having made a major input to the design of a brand new school, Andrew Fleet is to retire in July.

Mr Fleet took up the reins at Hreod Parkway in 1997 when Ofsted inspectors had already identified serious weaknesses.

Although the school was put into Special Measures in 2001, inspectors stated that the management was on the right track and within 20 months the school was given a clean bill of health.

In 2004 Hreod was designated a specialist maths, science and computing school.

Year 3/4 teacher David Colclough began playing basketball as a child and reached a serious level in high school and college before moving to Seattle where he played for the Chauffeur Bulldogs.

After teaching in primary schools in the United States for nine years, he made the move to Swindon to be near his wife’s family. While settling into the area, he worked as a supply teacher at Moredon before joining the staff in September.

He was keen to add something extra to school life and offered to coach basketball after-school . “I’ve been trying to introduce basic skills and let children know that there are other sports apart from soccer. It’s a main sport in the States but it’s growing in popularity here.”

Eighteen youngsters have been enjoying training, above, and playing games between themselves but David hopes that neighbouring

schools might consider taking up the game.

He now plays for Swindon Cavaliers and is getting to grips with life in the town which he finds less stressful than Seattle. “I like living here because it’s very peaceful.

I’ve only heard police sirens once since I’ve been here. The weather has taken some getting used to though.”

Shaw Ridge newts to be captured The process of rounding up the protected great crested newts which have delayed the building of the new Shaw Ridge Primary School for six months should commence in February, providing it does not snow and they decide to go back into hibernation.

The site has been surrounded by newt fences since October and some 70 traps are in place to ensure as many as possible can be found and relocated.

Millbrook set for March start A new primary school to serve Freshbrook has been given planning permission. Work should start in late March so that the building can be occupied in July 2009.This will enable the old Freshbrook and Windmill Hill Primary School buildings to be removed during the summer holidays.

Top tutors relaunch as Aspire

Getting the Olympic spirit

Youngsters at Tregoze Primary School after-school club looked at the Olympics at the end of the winter term and decorated a mannequin made by Angela Garrett.

Each piece of fabric, representing flags and symbols of countries around the world was tie-dyed, embroidered and collaged by the fifteen children who took part in the workshops.

“The children worked really hard to make their ‘flags,” said Angela. “When the mannequin was finished, we all decided to call her Olympianna.

“The aim was to show children how enjoyable science can be,” said science co-ordinator, Tracy Dangerfield. “We wanted to get them to ask questions such as I wonder..? and What if..? to stimulate their imaginations.”

Children carried out experiments to protect hard boiled eggs with crash helmets, made bridges from spaghetti and looked for iron in breakfast cereal.

Young engineers also battled to reach the finals of the storm the castle competition, designing and making a trebuchet catapult to fire table tennis balls over a castle wall.

Science shows by Ian Dunne of Do Science Ltd. rounded off the week. The energetic chemist, and lapsed pyrotechnician, demonstrated his favourite bits of science and then visited individual classes for question and answer sessions.

The group was selected as one of the community beneficiaries alongside three armed forces benevolent funds.

The Link represented Lower Shaw Farm at the event featuring the band of the Royal Marines who entertained military personnel and civilian staff based at the academy and the Cranfield Institute. The Royal Engineers parachute team performed an illuminated night time jump and the evening ended with a huge firework display.

Presenting a cheque just before Christmas, concert organiser Wing Commander Peter Bray said the childrens’ project and the Faringdon Family Centre had been chosen from a long list of nominations put forward by people working at Shrivenham. “It’s always a popular event and it went off very success-

fully and just in time. The heavy rains the next day caused huge problems across the country and some at the academy.

“We’re really pleased that the farm is able to use the money to improve facilities for children.”

Andrea Hirsch said, “in January and February we are carrying out refurbishment work on the farm to improve visitor facilities and developing opportunities for families to learn more about the environment and ways to live sustainably.

“The donation from the Defence Academy will help us achieve these aims and we’re very grateful to all the people who work there for their support.”

Railway steaming towards Cricklade

What was it like ‘inside’?

Although Swindon was not the birthplace of the Great Western Railway or its headquarters, it was the manufacturing centre and is usually the first place that people think of regarding the GWR. Peter Timms has written an in-depth social and industrial study of the conditions faced by the many thousands of working men and women and their families whose lives were controlled by the GWR from 1930 to 1960, the beginning of the modern period for the railway with mechanical accounting, up to the decline of the railway from 1957.

He writes about everything from pay rates and timekeeping to leisure, the effects of the Depression, working and living conditions, wartime and post-war and nationalisation. The book features 100 photographs, some never published.

A project to complete another major park in Swindon will take a big step forward in the Spring when Swindon Council completes a car park to provide greater access to the public.

Time for some TLC at the lagoon

The creation of Peatmoor Lagoon started during 1987 European Year of the Environment. The Link ended its feature by saying, ‘this is barely the beginning of a new environment which will be constantly changing and always evolving.’

However the lagoon is looking tired and overgrown. Some of the saplings planted twenty years ago are now huge, a lot of brushwood and brambles now spoil views across the lagoon and self-seeded trees are growing out of the grassy, but originally shingle, beach where children feed the ducks and swans.

Maintenance work is needed to keep the lagoon area attractive but Swindon Council does not have the resources to give it a decent makeover. They are going to cut down some of the largest trees and clear dense areas around the fishing platforms.

But if anything else is to happen, it’s up to volunteers to come forward and take on some of the low level work to open up sight lines and tidy up the beach. Volunteers are well known in the area, they’ve been looking after nearby Peatmoor Copse for nearly 20 years.

Lounge owner Hanif Robani has agreed to commit all his profits on a Monday evening twice a month from his restaurant, take-aways and home deliveries to a good cause, working with The Link to help organisations make as much money as possible.

“Since we relaunched in November, the response to our adverts in The Link has been fantastic, but I want to go beyond a great eating out experience,” said Hanif. “We offer high quality fresh food and a contemporary ambience which has had a tremendous reception.

But as the Bombay Lounge is situated in the middle of the community and I live in Oakhurst, I suggested to The Link that we work together to boost local organisations.”

Hanif believes that a charity or group can expect to receive a minimum of £250 from a Monday evening’s profits. It could be a lot more

if they encourage all their friends, family and supporters to book a table at the Bombay Lounge.

The Link is coordinating the charity night diary. “Hanif has come up with an exciting win-win opportunity,” said publisher Roger Ogle.

Legions of crafters are being bitten by the stamping bug or getting hooked on scrapbooking; for Val MacLeod her hobby took such a hold that she now owns Wiltshire’s largest specialist store.

Val moved her Snazzy Stamping & Scrapbooking business in January to Basepoint in Westlea where she offers a wide range of materials and a large classroom space.

Drop in sessions are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with all materials provided to crafters who can spend three hours in the shop working on their projects for the cost of £5.

Scrapbooking crops take place on Wednesday evenings and there will be technique workshops taught by Val and fellow tutors at weekends and on Wednesdays mornings.

Jog in the park will set hearts racing

A sponsored jog around Lydiard Park this month is likely to be a thoroughly muddy affair, but organisers say this only adds to the fun.

Centre manager moves on

According to Julian Leggett, the manager of the West Swindon Centre who retired in mid-January, the shopping centre has now been open for one year longer than it was originally built for.

Anti-social dog owners

From D. Janes, Grange Park We seem to have some very anti-social dog owners in parts of West Swindon who keep leaving plastic bags full of dog faeces hanging from hedges or branches by footpaths.

The council has provided dog bins around the area which the majority of owners use, and others take the dog poop home for disposal. But is this some kind of weird protest by one or a a few dog owners?

Perhaps somebody can explain this unhealthy and unsightly practice because I can’t understand why some people insist on despoiling their community.

New lease of life for Toothill Farmhouse

In late 2005 the volunteer run Toothill Junior Youth Club were told by officers from Swindon Council that they could only use Toothill Farm social hall for another four months. Now, after a lively campaign, the club has not only saved the social hall, but they have taken over the adjacent farmhouse as a club base.

The West Swindon Air Training Corp display and recruitment evening on 4 January did not attract as many youngsters as expected, perhaps because of the early time in the year and the heavy rain on the night.

Another event is going to be arranged in March or April where newcomers can meet cadets and find out about the unit.

The unit has 24 cadets on roll and now has places for 40 after opening a second evening.

Women combine for prayer

Women’s World Day of Prayer 2008 takes place on Friday 7 March, it’s the oldest world-wide ecumenical movement, writes Suzanne Bullimore.

Each year the service is planned by women from around the globe.
