Ukrainian speakers needed to help dentists training in Swindon Freshbrook dentist Brendon Ball is making an appeal for anybody who speaks Ukrainian to contact him for assistance at the beginning of May when two dentists from Ukraine will be in the town.

He has organised

training for them as a result of his visit to the city of Chekassy last summer with colleague Richard Swift of the Milton Road practice.

Last August they delivered equipment and materials and worked with local dentists, providing training in modern methods and introduced them to up to date materials.

"Dental treatment in Ukraine is about 40 years behind Britain," said Brendon. "The quality of treatment is variable. Much of it is crude and some of the practice we observed was dreadful, with children being badly traumatised. We were shocked by what we saw.

"The equipment is generally acceptable, if old fashioned, and a lot has been donated. But the most important need is for anaesthetics and modern materials, and also training. It would be quite easy to make changes in Ukraine with the right kind of education for practitioners, and also in oral health. For example, dental problems would be reduced if only people would not use sugar and lemon in tea."

He said that the project is supported by the Wiltshire Health Authority and also that Ukraine visitors will only observe practice; they will not be permitted to carry out any clinical work. Brendon's interest in improving conditions in the Ukraine was inspired by coverage of the charity Dentaid in The Link over the last two years.

"The dentists coming to Swin-

don have little experience of travel and speak no English," said Brendon.

"It would be good to give them a chance to chat socially in their own language. It would provide a break from the intense training working through an interpretor."

Swindon House opens A home for teenage boys in Chekassy in Ukraine, paid for by the people of Swindon, was officially opened at the end of December by the Southampton based charity Hope Now. Called 'Swindon House' it provides a place to live after boys leave the Hope Now orphanage.

Smoking in the West Swindon Centre An article in the January Link featured complaints from Ted Spalding and Mike Taylor about smoking in the West Swindon Centre mall and a comment from an Asda representative that it was not perceived as a problem. Reader reaction was both swift and blunt. We have sent Asda copies and have asked them to reconsider their smoking policy. We hope to update their viewpoint next month.

From Darren Mogg I had to write to advise you that both Asda West Swindon and Asda House in Leeds are lying when they say that they have had no complaints regarding smoking within the mall.

About three months ago an official complaint was made to Asda Management by staff regarding customers being allowed to smoke at the customer service desk and cigarette kiosk.

When no response was received the complaint was passed to the

Swindon Environmental Health Officer who officially made the complaint on behalf of Asda staff who have to work within the departments located in the mall. They feel they should receive the same level of protection as their colleagues who work within the main store.

When I last spoke to the EHO, I was told that Asda were looking into the complaint.

I look forward to seeing this campaign grow.

I wrote to the company headquarters in 1998. The reply said that most people wanted to smoke, and they would lose custom if it were to be banned.

I applaud your reporting on the matter, and hope that there will be sufficient publicity for Asda to change their policy on smoking in a public place, thus bringing them into line with more enlightened companies such as McDonalds, Tesco and the RSC at Cribbs Causeway.

Smoking should be banned anywhere near food outlets. Ashtrays are filthy within the complex and chewing gum is rife outside and in.

From Bev Cejer, Jewel Close, Grange Park I would strongly support moves to make the West Swindon Shopping Centre a non-smoking area for all the reasons cited in the article.

I am especially concerned for the young children who are exposed to a high level of passive smoking, a factor which can contribute to asthma in this age group.

Since the centre opened a nationwide move has taken place to make public areas smoke free to protect both staff and non-smoking shoppers.

Going shopping where smoking is permitted is an unpleasant experience for non-smokers such as myself. I currently shop elswhere to avoid the smoke. This must have a commercial impact which Asda should take into account.

Perhaps Asda should ask customers whether they want the centre to become a smoke free area?

From Aimee Georgeson, Westminster Road, Toothill I was very disappointed with the response from Naomi Duggan of Asda. How ridiculous to say that smoking is not perceived as a problem. It is one of the main health concerns for people in today's society and there are nationwide campaigns to raise public awareness on this issue. I would like to know if there has been consultation with consumers on the smoking issue.

As the mother of a child who had (now corrected) several heart defects, I have always had concerns about the effect of smoking on the saturation of oxygen in her blood. There are many people who have respiratory problems and feel anxious and short of breath when around smoke.

I understand the need to accommodate all customers and respect their rights. However it is also important to see a broader picture and protect all customers' health, safety and levels of comfort whilst using the area. It is negligent and irresponsible not to act simply because it would be difficult to monitor.

It is very unhygienic packing shopping close to the cigarette kiosk and people sitting on the benches smoking. I also suffer from asthma When it is bad I go to another supermarket.

As for the spokesperson for Asda and the spokesperson from Leeds denying that anyone has complained before, I am one of many who have complained on numerous occasions.

I am sure an overwhelming number of shoppers would ask for West Swindon Centre to be nonsmoking in line with other centres, buses and now trains.

I hope eventually that the centre will be a free smoke zone. I do believe in freedom of choice but for many people who shop at the centre and the staff, what choice do they have?

David Fletcher, Sparcells Tobacco smoke is a dangerous and, to those of us who have not picked up the habit, highly unpleasant substance, even in very small concentrations. The sooner it is completely banned from all public places, the better.

It is time the West Swindon Centre followed the excellent example of Thamesdown Transport. Enforcement is not a difficulty. Everyone is fully aware of the fact that smoking is prohibited on the buses, so nobody smokes.

Action at Home family reduce rubbish Last month we met Kristianne Drake, Steve Brown and their son Roan, the family from Westlea who have signed up for the Action at Home environmental challenge. Every month they are tackling an issue and seeing if they can change the way they live. Catherine Rice of Wiltshire Agenda 21 describes how the family are reducing waste.

The average household produces a tonne of rubbish each year.

If every British household reduced waste by 30%, there would be 1 million bin lorry trips fewer to landfill sites. So how can you generate less waste?

Kristianne, Steve and Roan have been tackling their rubbish bin with the help of the Action at Home waste pack.

The first thing they did was stop their junk mail. You can remove your details from mailshot files by writing to the Mailing Preference Service, Freepost 22, London W1E 7EZ. If you want to avoid mailing lists, why not use that great source of information, the local library.

Kristianne and Steve always make a list before going shopping and try to avoid over-packaged products. Buying loose fruit and vegetables means they both reduce packaging, and also choose the best quality produce. Cartons get reused to store loose produce in the fridge and they always reuse carrier bags. Now they are looking at the disposable items they use such as tissues to see if changes can be made.

The Phoenix Surgery at Toothill Village Centre was the target of a would-be thief on the night of 30 December.

A very heavy object was thrown through the window, scattering broken glass right across the waiting room. The intruder triggered the alarm system and left the premises empty handed. Although police were on site within minutes no one was apprehended.

Youngsters at Toothill School collected items for a time capsule during January to commemorate the passing of the 20th Century.

Headteacher Richard Jackson said staff had decided that it would be best to create a capsule after the turn of the Millennium. "The children had a greater appreciation of the momentus time and included photographs of the celebrations from around the world."

Also included were pictures of each class, children's writing about current events, sport, fashion and transport, a recording of the school prayer and the school hymn, and a tape by chart toppers Westlife.

The capsule has been sealed and mounted high in the school hall to be opened in fifty years time.

Claire Thorp, 10, said, "it's strange to think I will be 60 when the capsule is opened. I might bring my grandchildren to meet my old school friends."

Ten Research Machines computers have been networked in a central suite and the hardware includes a scanner and printers, one of which is colour.

The software packages are aimed at four levels, offering experience across the ability range in word processing, literacy development, science, art, music composition and maths.

Headteacher Jon Swaffield said, "every child has the opportunity to use the computers at least once a week; they will have their own disc on which to store work and build up a personal file."

The children have been positive about their new computer suite.

Gary Trevett, 10, said, "I don't have a computer at home so I love using them at school. You can use them for lots of different things and have loads of fun learning."

Anna Dilworth, 10, echoed these comments. "I am writing to my pen pal and I can scan pictures and put them into my letter. I would love to spend more time on the computer."

Hoola-hoops, bean bags, skipping ropes, jacks and skittles have been bought with a grant from the Friends of Freshbrook School in a scheme to modify playground behaviour. And the twelve lunchtime dinner ladies are helping children learn how to play creatively.

Deputy headteacher Jane Parsons said the initiative is part of the school behaviour policy.

"Some children have little experience of constructive play; there are a lot of rough games like wrestling and martial arts which they get off the TV. "With the equipment and games we aim to encourage more cooperative and sociable play. Children of different ages are also now restricted to one of the playgrounds for a week. They then move to another area and the dinner ladies

stay with them so that they get to know children better."

Dinner lady Pauline Pellicci said the equipment was a good idea.

"Many children did not know what to do when the games were brought out, but they soon caught on. These are all the things we did when we were at school; it's fun showing them how to play jacks and French skipping."

Jack Mutlow, 9, said, "we just used to play football and run

around. "It's much better to have something to do at lunchtimes."

Lucy Gillett said she had never spun a hoola-hoop. "Playtime is more interesting nowadays."

In one of the playgrounds the dinner ladies organise traditional group activities and rhyming games like 'Oranges and Lemons' and 'What's the time Mr Woolf.'

The NeST aims to bring together representatives from the community, local councillors, the local beat police officer and relevant council officers in order to identify safety concerns and to find ways that people can work together to improve the quality of life.

One the major issues discussed was the need for more contact with the police. As a result local officer PC Rob Mortimer is starting a regular surgery at Freshbrook Community Centre so that concerns can be raised. The dates will be published next month.

Another key issue is how young people can be involved in working as part of the community to reduce' crime and disorder.

Youth workers are liaising with teenagers to ensure that they are able playa role.

As The Link went to press Swindon councillors were reading a lengthy report to be considered at the development control committee on 31 January. The proposal requires the footpath around the lagoon to be realigned to allow construction of the cafe which intrudes slightly into the public open space. Architect Richard HywelEvans has designed it to compliment the main hi-tech glass fronted building which opened after Christmas.

The company proposes to make the facilities available to both its 500 staff and the public.

Cellular Operations chairman Richard Lee explained, "we deliberately set out to create an exciting working environment for our staff, and we do need a refreshment area.

As the site is open to the footpath around the lagoon it seemed a good idea to offer an amenity to people visiting the area."

By mid-January two petitions had been submitted to Swindon's planning department with 207 against. the proposal and 417 in favour.

Peatmoor resident Bernard Taylor supports the petition against the project drawn up by local councillor Nick Martin. He sees the cafe 'as another totally alien structure in a natural setting which would detract further from the peace and tranquillity presently enjoyed by local residents and fishermen.' He comments that 'the positioning of the Cellular Operations building on the boundary of the public open space is totally unsympathetic to the general feeling of the area.'

However local councillor Peter Mallinson, who organised the petition in favour of the cafe, welcomed the proposal. "It would have been easy for Cellular Operations to have proposed a concrete box for its headquarters, like so many other buildings in Swindon.

"They are to be congratulated

for their innovation which will draw interest and attention to the area. The cafe will benefit local residents, people from across the town who visit the lagoon and the anglers who fish there."

The Cellular Operations site is located in a designated industrial development area. Across the lagoon at Peatmoor Village Centre, there are already two restaurants, including the oriental style Chinese Experience, a pub, two takeaways and a shop.

Disruption to end Emergency road works on Roughmoor Way caused by subsidence on either side of an underpass leading to Shaw village centre should be completed by the middle of February.

arachnophobic who has threatened to leave home if he buys another spider. She hasn't yet," he said.

"But she did insist I sell my python when the children were born. At

15 feet, she was worried that they might be eaten if it ever got out."

It costs about £25 a month to

feed the insects, mostly on live crickets. One of the drawbacks though is that they sometimes escape. They were noisily chirping in the warmth behind the fridge throughout the interview. James spends about 10 hours a week on his hobby.

And for the future, he plans to take a trip to South America this year to catch more spiders. Longer term he is planning the horticulture of exotic plants. He already has over 25 different species of bamboo growing in the garden.

Flu puts the NHS to the test But Swindon North MP Michael Wills says the NHS has coped well When the millennium celebrations were finally over, Britain woke up to an outbreak of flu that now looks set to become the worst in a decade.

The new strain of flu - Sydney A fever - is affecting thousands of people in all parts of the country. It is not only Britain that is suffering - from France and Belgium to Spain and Italy, people are falling ill with the new strain. In Switzerland, the number of cases is approaching record figures.

In Britain, early December saw 40 people per 100,000 visit their doctor with flu-like symptoms. By mid-January, this figure had shot up to 197 per 100,000. Not only are more people suffering, but those who are, will tell you it is more unpleasant.

Intensive care units are admitting increasing numbers of people suffering from flu - the figure is currently almost half the patients admitted. And typically, it is taking ten to twelve days before people feel better, rather than four or five.

The flu bug, together with the long New Year break, has put real pressure on the NHS. In the three weeks following Christmas 600,000 people visited A&E, and there were more than 200,000 emergency admissions to hospital. Over the millennium GPs received 50% more calls than last year - mainly due to fl u.

Of course, the pressures on the

8.6 million doses of flu vaccine were also made available this winter - that is one million up on last year.

The flu bug has stretched the NHS, but it has risen to the challenge. Once again we all owe a great debt of gratitude to the NHS and social services staff for making sure that services have been there when people need them.

MP weds in quiet ceremony Julia Drown, MP for South Swindon, ended the 20th Century by marrying her partner Bill Hughes at Alnwick Register Office in Northumberland.

The ceremony took place on 29 December, attended by immediate family. Julia's mother's family originate from Alnwick and one of Bill's sisters and her husband live there. His brother in law is a solicitor in the town and his office doubles as the local register office.

The couple met in 1985 when they were both students at Oxford University. Bill is now a philsophy lecturer there and commutes from Swindon.

Their two month old baby Harvey Dexter was with Julia and Bill for the ceremony. She wore an ivory silk wedding dress and carried a small posy of carnations.

"It was a great day," said Bill.

Building is going on apace for the 210 place school which is due for completion at the end of July, ready for a September opening.

Although Mrs Ching, 45, does not officially take up her position until early May, she is already very busy. The catchment is shared with Haydonleigh and Abbey Meads Schools and Swindon council's new admission policy requires parents to state a school preference by 18 February.

Having just returned from a visit to the site on Elstree Way, Mrs Ching enthusiastically described her initial thoughts about the school. "1 would like it to be bright, warm, welcoming, a school which forms good working relationships within the community.

"As well as concentrating on the academic requirements, I would like to give time to practical subjects. I think music, drama, and sport play an important role in children's development and pro-

vide opportunity for parental involvement. Grandparents and retired people will also be important to the school, as will the church and other outside groups."

Initially there will be five full time teachers and a number of support and administrative staff. The governing body is currently designing a logo and uniform.

Within the school grounds there will be football and netball pitches.

A drop off point for parents using cars has also been planned.

Alex progresses in under 15s rankings

Greendown team reaches final 32

Keen rugby player Alex Norcross from Shaw has been selected for the Wiltshire schools under 15s team and was instrumental in helping the county win its first game of the season in December against Bristol schools.

Under 13s footballers from Greendown School have reached the last sixty four teams in the Heinz Ketchup Cup which kicked off with over 1,000 English secondary schools.

In the first three victorious games played during the Autumn term, two were against schools in Banbury which had already knocked out two Swindon schools. Up against The Warriners School, again from Banbury, on 20 January, the Greendown squad took revenge for the town 5 to 2, with goals from Harry Hambidge and James Grubb, two each, and Andy Harrison.

Swindon's Olympic skating hopefuls Andrew Seabrook and Tiffany Sfikas have launched their career together with a very busy sixth month programme.

Andrew flew to Florida on 7 January where the pair will train with top US and Canadian coaches for two months. They have a week break in early March before a skating exhibition in Iceland and a charity gala in Blackpool. They skate their first senior pairs competition together in April.

Hreod Parkway School: A Learning skills for success Headteacher Andrew Fleet introduces this two page feature

Hreod Parkway is looking forward. We want to hold on to the good of the past in standards and traditions, while we embrace change which will enable our pupils to live for today and prepare for the future.

In recent years we have grown significantly. This brings opportunities.

Funding plans will enhance our learning environment over the next four years. We have just won large grants to • develop a computerised study centre giving our pupils study opportunities day and night; • provide for a full time Pastoral Care Worker over the next 3 years.

These developments are important to enable our pupils to meet the challenges of this new century. They need a `survival kit' of skills, including literacy, numeracy, problem-solving, teamwork, presentation skills and self-confidence.

Pupils also need a concern for the health and well-being of others and the environment. Teaching respect and an expectation of high standards is important in building a community which is caring and successful.

Focusing on being a centre of learning, we are seeking to build these attributes. Part of this approach is our acknowledgement that we can improve on what we have done in the past, summed up in our credo: 'Everyone can do better than their personal best so far.'

We are happy to share some of the ways in which we are looking forward and developing learning partnerships with pupils and parents to ensure success for all.

The alchemy of North Site The rebirth of Hreod Parkway School gathered pace last summer with the focus of developments in the lower school on North Site. The Local Education Authority spent over £140,000 to enhance the learning environment for the pupils. Fifteen new classrooms have been provided as well as four new science laboratories (pictured right). Almost every room in the lower school was re-painted and refurbished.

Alongside this key development was the creation of a new post - Director of Lower School.

Mr Andy Russell, who has the task of ensuring the smooth running of North Site, as well as managing Key Stage 3, has filled this role, ably assisted by over 30 teachers and professional support staff.

The effect of scientific progress on our everyday lives has never been greater. Personal computers, mobile `phones and medical advances are just a few examples of science applications which have changed the way we live.

Never has it been so important that young people today should have the knowledge to make informed judgements on the scientific

progress and applications of tomorrow. For example, the debate over the safety of GM foods and the ethical dilemma of "designer babies".

With this aim in mind, we are delighted to work with our pupils in four very well furnished laboratories, complete with brand new equipment.

The Science Faculty uses a quote from Leonardo da Vinci as its motto:

Dance for all Since September, when GCSE Dance started, eighteen year 10 pupils have had the opportunity to visit Sadler's Wells and in February will join workshops with nationally acclaimed companies at the Town Hall Studios.

Over eighty Year 7 pupils have been attending a weekly dance club tutored by senior pupils. They are gaining confidence to learn more complex moves and performed in their first show at Christmas.

Year 8's have also shown a keenness towards their club and have choreographed in small groups with the help of teachers.

Upper school dancers have produced ongoing high standards in dance sequences set to both chart hits and classical music, demonstrating poise, athleticism and creativity in their work.

A flair for the arts The arts give pupils opportunities to develop aesthetic awareness through many styles and cultures.

These are extended beyond the classroom with extra-curricular activities in music, art, dance and drama.

Groups give regular performances, inclyding a successful Christmas concert, which demonstrated this variety. While the choir sang Benjamin Britten, the Steel Band gave a Caribbean flavour and dances were both modern and Irish.

Readings were performed before a warming open fire designed by the art department.

Ahead we have many exciting events in which our pupils will take part, including a Shakespeare performance as part of the upcoming Millennium festival and the opportunity for our musicians to go "Around the World in 80 minutes," in the Swindon Secondary Schools' Music Festival.

Karleigh Williams, a year 7 pupil, describes one of the activities set for her class by their teacher, Miss Nicola Banks: "You can solve crimes using Chromatography. This is a technique that takes dye out of pens, and if a suspect is linked to a ransom note, you can test some pens and the dyes will separate into different colours. You can match the ransom note ink, with ink taken from the suspect, and hopefully catch the culprit. To get a chromatogram you draw a dot with a pen on a piece of filter paper, put some drops of water on and wait for the ink to spread. The dyes will separate and the way the colour shows up will reveal the pen the person had used."

Maths Clinic has become a popular after-school session with pupils. Every Wednesday. pupils come along to the Mathematics Faculty for a `drop in' session to get help with any classwork and homework that they have problems with during the week, or just to get some extra practice with a topic that they have enjoyed.

The clinic is run by mathematics teachers on both sites who are on hand to sort out pupils' individual problems.

Pupils may stay as long as they need, whether it's two minutes to answer a quick question or an hour to go over a complete topic; the choice is theirs.

The Faculty aims to provide opportunities for pupils to manage their own learning so that they achieve their mathematical targets, with one to one tuition, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Spelling and reading boosters remain on top!!

In the technology rich society of today it is easy to think that spelling and reading do not matter as much as they used to! But, in everyday life most people don't have constant access to computers. So it's fair to say that good literacy skills are as important as ever: perhaps even more so in a century where people are still trying to make strides in effective communications.

Literacy skills are still the key to effective learning. At Hreod Parkway we use several reading and spelling schemes that seek to improve and accelerate such skills.

Even the names of these schemes try to make learning sound more fun - Toe by Toe, Arrow, Spell Well, DISTAR. and Reading Recovery.

These are schemes that use a multi-sensory approach to the teaching of good literacy skills. The Learning Support team at Hreod Parkway strongly believe that to emphasise the true value of these skills remains a top priority.

Twin links

Twinning links have developed between Hreod Parkway and the Salzgitter-Bad Gymnasium in Swindon's twin town. Hreod pupils have exchanged messages with pen-pals in Germany using e-mail and are producing a video introducing the English school and its routines.

On the run The school held its annual crosscountry championshjps in the Autumn with 900 pupils participating for their House.

Pupils first prepared by running the course four ti mes in their lessons and gold, silver and bronze medals together with certificates for the first 15 athletes for each race were awarded.

One hundred and twenty five runners went on to compete in the Swindon Cross Country Championships held at the school in November and twenty athletes gained selection for the Wiltshire Championships in Salisbury.

Ten Swindon s chools competed in the championships at Hreod and Ross Townsend won the Junior Boys race in both Swindon and Salisbury, so becoming Wiltshire champion.

Industry support for year 11 work experience preparation Work experience is invaluable. but can be a daunting prospect for many young people.

When Hugo Pike, from Understanding Industry, offered to put together a Conference, to help our Year 11 pupils prepare for 2 weeks in local work last October, we gratefully accepted.

This year Salzgitter-Bad Gymnasium's Jubilee Celebrations take place and our pupils will be able to participate in the sporting events and the Rocky Horror Show and Disco which feature in their festive programme.

Over the last fifteen months Judith has worked with Neil to illustrate two books aimed at developing early reading skills. The first, 'If only,' tells the story of a caterpillar who thinks he is ugly, but all the other insects know he will be beautiful one day.

The second, 'Mrs Rainbow, is named after Story Sacks office manager Jenny Rainbow. The book tells the story of a lady who loves colour in her life, but she becomes miserable when the local council tells her to paint her multi-coloured house grey.

All turns out well when her neighbours paint their houses in many colours and the council has to change its policy.

New Year's eve proved to be a quiet period throughout the whole of Wiltshire and at Westlea fire station luckily nobody needed our help, writes Sub-officer Martin Lloyd.

We responded to 1,100 calls during 1999, which included over 400 fires. I would like to bring your attention to the community fire watch that we run at Westlea. If you need any advice on fire safety we are more than willing to help.

Don't put things off, give us a call on 487620. We can also be found at various venues throughout the year, so come on over, even if you just want the kids to have a look at a fire engine.

One disturbing statistic is the number of road traffic accidents that we have attended - over 200 in the last year.

Youngsters offered the ultimate adventure A group of thirteen and fourteen year olds studying Spanish at Greendown School in Grange Park have been given the unique chance to bid for a place on a working adventure trip to Ocotal, Swindon's twin town in Nicaragua next December.

Alan Bailey from Swindon's youth services gave a slide presentation to the students on 21 January to describe the project and snake them aware of the difficulties of living in a third world country.

"Ocotal is still suffering from the devastating hurricane that went through central America in 1998, but the people are getting the town back together by their own efforts and with money and practical help from Swindon people.

We are planning a tree planting project which will give students from Greendown the chance to work alongside local young people.

"Those who are selected will go into a very demanding environment: no Macdonalds round the corner, no mobile phones to call home, very few of the home comforts they are used to."

During the three weeks in Nicaragua, in addition to the tree planting, treks into the volcano region are planned and also a five day canoe expedition.

Jean Goncalves has been appointed as play development worker with the West Swindon community education team.

First coming to Swindon ten years ago from the West of Scotland, Jean was supervisor at Oliver Tomkins playgroup and playworker at the Toothill After School Club, before joining Swindon Council community development in 1996 as play resource worker.

"My task is to work with local groups to develop play opportunities for children after school, at junior clubs and during holidays," said Jean. "I am visiting existing groups already involved in play activities and would be pleased to hear of anybody who would like to discuss setting up play projects in their neighbourhoods."

Full steam ahead at Moulden Hill The dream of driving steam trains into Swindon is but a whistle stop away according to members of the Swindon and Cricklade Railway Society.

Plans are well advanced to extend the track south from the society's headquarters at Blunsdon Station to a new country park at Moulden Hill situated between Moredon Road, Taw Hill and Woodhall Park.

Over two years ago the Haydon Development Company built major features including a lake, footpaths and the trackbed for the railway. When opened the park will have a visitor centre, nature trails and a lot more tree planting.

The Great Western Community Forest and the Woodland Trust organised a well attended public tree plant on part of the park 18 months ago.

Moulden Hill is the southern end of an environmental and leisure corridor along the River Ray, which runs from Swindon to the Cotswold water park, taking in the , canal restoration project, steam railway, footpaths and the lottery funded national cycle way.

By the end of the year, subject to planning permission, the society hopes to be laying track and building a station next to the lake. It will be modelled after the old Savernake station at Marlborough on the former Midland and South Western Junction line.

£200,000 in materials alone. The Haydon Development Company has donated £75,000. All the work will be done by volunteers."

He added that the society is always raising funds for a variety of projects to develop the railway.

New members of all ages are always very welcome to help in a wide variety of projects on the railway.
