The Link was very sorry to hear of the breakdown of the promising skating partnership of Andrew Seabrook and Marsha Poloushenko just before Christmas.

As a result of extreme financial pressures on her family, Marsha has returned to her home in the Ukraine. She has had to give up skating to look for work.

Following a decision early in January by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott not to call for a Public Enquiry, Swindon's new hospital is one step closer.

Detailed plans now have to be approved by Swindon Council, but it is anticipated that construction work on the £148m scheme will begin during the second half of 1999 with completion in 2002.

Concerns about traffic, loss of a greenfield site and the distance of Commonhead from the town centre led to the call for a Public Enquiry. The decision to approve the project came days after the official deadline for the private finance schemes expired. But it is hoped that the Department of Health and Treasury will be flexible about this.

As well as environmental concerns, both local people and health workers union UNISON are worried that the new hospital will not have the capacity to serve Swindon's growing population.

Although there will be 15% more space than at PMH, there will be only 461 beds and 84 care spaces, with another 25 beds remaining at Savernake Hospital in Marlborough. PMH currently has just over 600 beds.

The new development will provide Swindon with ultra-modern operating and X-ray facilities and, hopefully, a badly needed kidney dialysis unit.

The site will also house a social club, creche and child development centre. Land is available for further development.

Unlike PMH, the site will also be accessible to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance helicopter.

Most of the money comes from the National Lottery with major funding from Swindon Council and BAA McArthur Glenn.

But £300,000 has to be raised

from local sources. Despite efforts to persuade business to contribute, only £50,000 has been raised.

For every £1 not raised, £3 will be withdrawn from lottery funding

Last look at Front Garden decision Swindon Council has agreed to develop the land between Old Town and the M4 where another 4,500 homes are to be built, in addition to 5,500 still to be completed in North Swindon.

The decision made by the Environmental Services Committee now goes forward to the next stage of the planning process with the publication of a formal modification to the Structure Plan.

The public have a further opportunity to comment on the development of the 'Front Garden' area when the documents and plans are put on public display from 22 February until 9 April.

The Government requires Swindon area to absorb another 15,000 houses over the next 20 years.

The Ofsted inspectors conclude that the strengths of the school outweigh the weaknesses and commends the high level of attainment in national tests of mathematics and science, and good teaching at the top end of the key stage.

The report points out that too much teaching in the lower end of the key stage is unsatisfactory and pupils with special needs in a class set up to support them make unsatisfactory progress.

Assessment is not used effectively to plan lessons and record keeping does not monitor pupil's progress adequately. The school development plan is not sufficiently coherent to give a clear vision for its future. Professional development of staff is insufficiently addressed and supported.

The report states that teaching is at least satisfactory in 84% of lessons, and in 34% of lessons, it was good or very good. However, in 16% of lessons teaching was said to be unsatisfactory.

Most issues arising from the last Ofsted inspection have been addressed and the report states that the school is suitably placed to make further improvements.

Governors will now be drawing up an action plan which will set targets for improvement over the next two years.

Positivity is the watchword in the Ashington House Surgery's Patient Participation Group which has been setup with backing from the Wiltshire Health Authority.

A major aim is to be proactive in the interests of patients and professionals and not simply to be a vehicle for complaint. Chairperson Sue Singleton said, "not enough has been done by patients for the practice. It's important that we all work together to make things better for everyone."

Initial ideas included an initiative to minimise missed appointments, contact with other local groups, and a request for statistical information on patient demography and health needs in West Swindon. The group also hopes to tackle patient education and fundraising, and to hold an open meeting in the Spring.

Nearly 500 children, teachers, parents and pre-school brothers and sisters have signed up for a scheme called Books and Beyond which aims to boost book reading and reduce the time spent watching television.

All ages have been encouraged to take part whatever ability, including very young children who can have books read to them.

Displays around the school are promoting the project and a range of incentives have been developed to keep participants keen and reading.

Schools compete for local award Another Youth Action Award has been launched for July 1999 and already Headlands, Bradon Forest, Hreod Parkway, The Ridgeway, Warneford and Oakfield schools are getting involved with their crime related projects.

Youth Action deals with young people's issues, allowing them to express their views and change things within their school and community.

Last year Hreod Parkway's Come and Talk youth action group had great success with their antibullying project, which they explained to then Education Standards Minister Estelle Morris in the House of Commons.

The alarm sounded and the children made an orderly emergency exit in the pouring rain.

A few moments later they cheered as a crew from Westlea fire station arrived, blue lights flashing, to carry out a drill. Health and Safety Officer and school administrator Jackie Harbron and two children were 'found' within the school by firefighters wearing breathing sets and rescued through a smoke filled corridor The school had been selected to launch a fire brigade educational package called 'Learn Not to Burn' aimed at giving children an early awareness of the dangers of fire.

The drill was followed by a talk on fire hazards and a demonstration of equipment by Westlea fire fighters. Teachers also have use of fire awareness teaching resources.

Jackie Harbron said she had been shaken by the experience of the realistic fire drill. "It was carried out very professionally, but it was

very disorientating to find your way down a smoke filled corridor with children. Fire is something we must take very seriously."

Does this sound familiar to you?

All of a sudden you hear a siren from somewhere, but where? You look in your rear view mirror and see a bright orange, 13 tonne fire engine bearing down on you with blue lights flashing, siren wailing and bull horn blasting, announcing our impending arrival.

What do you do? Panic is the answer for most people. Unfortunately this isn't very helpful for us because you become unpredictable and we need to plan our route past other vehicles.

To become an EFAD (emergency fire appliance driver), we must undertake a special driving course under the direction of the brigade driving instructor. This course plus six months non-emergency driving teaches us the basic skills required to handle the appliance.

Try to imagine the stress placed on the driver. He or she has to think of the safety of the crew, be aware of the actions of other road users and pedestrians, plan a safe route through traffic and bear in mind that somebody may be in a life threatening situation and require help. But we don't actually know for sure until our arrival at the scene.

Every time fire fighters respond to a call they are putting their lives

at risk, not only at the incident but also on the roads.

Fire fighters have died when they were involved in road traffic accidents. One such incident was when a crew were responding to what they thought was a serious house fire. On route they were involved in an accident and two fire fighters died. The call was actually a hoax! A result I am sure the caller never intended.

These accidents can be caused by many factors, which is why EFAD drivers need to demonstrate a high level of skill and awareness.

So what advice can we give you to help us? If is is safe, indicate left and pull over. If you can't, don't just stop dead. Keep going until you can pull over, but please do not stop in any old place as it may restrict our view or cause us to take evasive action. Only stop where it is safe to do so.

Indicate your intentions, whatever they are. If you give a clear indication in plenty of time we will manoeuvre around you.

When vehicles in front of you pull over to allow us through, don't use this as an opportunity to get ahead of the cars in front, not only is it an obstacle to us but it is very dangerous.

Likewise, don't try following an emergency appliance through traffic. Other road users may not be prepared for you coming through and as we sometimes pass through red lights you may cause a serious accident.

Remember, we are trying to get there as fast as we can, but as safely as possible.

LETTER FROM WESTMINSTER

Michael made a Minister after PM saves a soul My life changed on 4 January when my office received a call from the 10 Downing Street switchboard asking me to wait by the phone.

An hour and a half later, they rang me again to say the Prime Minister wanted to talk to me from his holiday in the Seychelles.

I held on the line, but two minutes later the operator came back to say there had been a change of plan and that I should expect a call at any time between then and midnight.

By this time I was very con-

fused. I had not been quite sure

why the Prime Minister had wanted to talk to me and I had no idea why it now appeared that he

no longer wished to speak to me.

A week later the story emerged that, to achieve a good satellite 'phone link, the Prime Minister had to go offshore onto the Indian Ocean in a boat. While waiting for a connection with Britain, he had saved a tired swimmer from the sea. I assume that he was actually hauling him out of the sea while I was waiting on the line.

When the Prime Minister finally

got through, he told me he had good news and that he wanted me to become the junior minister at the Department of Trade and Industry, responsible for small firms.

The next day I

was in the Department, meeting the Permanent Secretary

and my Private Office.

I already had one piece of good news that day when I heard that theplanningpermission for the new hospital was to be allowed to

Society calls for choral interest

Haydn Williams, chairman, writes The Wootton Bassett Choral Society was set up almost twenty years ago and meets at the United Reformed Church Hall, Wood Street, Wootton Bassett on Monday evenings at 7.45pm during term time.

We sing from the works of composers ranging from the earliest to those of this century. Each year

we have a summer concert and a Christmas conce rt/carol service in Wootton Bassett. We have also performed in Malmesbury, Aldbourne and Lydiard Tregoze.

Last year we welcomed Mike Avery from Brinkworth as our

musical director. We are always searching for new singers in all voice categories: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Do not be deterred by the thought of auditions we don't hold them.

We feel that experience in cho-

ral singing is not as essential as the enjoyment of singing itself.

Soloists come from within the society, so there is always the possibility that you could one day be

singing an aria from Handel's Messiah. It happened to me.

Winner discovers new photograph of grandfather Janice Potton, from Woodhall Park, won a copy of 'Swindon: A Sixth Selection' offered in the October Link.

To her surprise she found a picture of hergrandfather William 'Jim' Dunford as a butchers's boy at the beginning of the century. She immediately confirmed the discovery with her mother Pat, and Jim's widow Lil, who is aged 90, and li ves in Cheney Manor.

"It was a complete surprise to see the photograph," said Janice.

"We were all really pleased; none of us had seen it before."

Janice is a keen researcher into her family tree and has traced her roots in Wiltshire back to the early

Lions evening for new members West Swindon Lions president Helen Marson writes: Many Canadian servicemen in London during World War II were appalled by the way children of the blitz had to live, with poor food, few clothes, frequent danger, dad serving overseas, mum working to help the war effort, homes destroyed and families split up.

Some of the Canadians were members of Lions Clubs and decided to help. Money was raised back home in Canada to be distributed to the needy by British Lions Clubs. But there weren't any!

After the war it was not long before the first British Lions Club were formed. West Swindon Lions Club was formed in 1993.

On Tuesday 16 February, 7.30pm in the Link Centre Community Suite, there is a chance to find out more about the Lions at a social evening.

Big names coming to Swindon?

Could the arrival of top rock band Ocean Colour Scene on 6 April at the Oasis Leisure Centre put the town on the touring map?

Perhaps. However gig arranger Neil Wyatt for Metropolis Music said OCS love touring and wanted to play the smaller venues after concerts in the huge arenas last year. He added that the band visited Swindon in 1996 and were keen to return.

Maybe other big acts will see that there is a big hole on the map which is empty of headline performers.

West Swindon Lions would like to thank all who gave so generously.

Over four nights £1,400 was collected in local street collections and two weekends outside Sainsburys and the West Swindon Centre.

A raffle at the Harvester pub raised £90.

Following Bradon Forest School's recent win at the English Schools' Ski Championships, 13 year old Michelle Palmer has been selected to represent England at the World Schools Ski Championships.

Michelle will spend a month in Chamonix at the Thompson British Ski Academy preparing for the event. Then, after just two days at home, she will be off on 25 February to Jesenik in the Czech Republic to compete in the slalom and giant slalom.

Make a splash for the NSPCC Join the exercise boom and help raise money for the NSPCC and other charities with a swim at the Link Centre pool this March.

The 9th BT Swimathon takes place mid-March with over 525 pools across Britain involved. The Link Centre is the only Swindon venue involved in Europe's biggest participation fundraising event.

BT wants 45,000 swimmers to help them raise more than £2m for the good causes. Swindon swimmers can take part on the evening of 20 March. To enter, either collect an entry form from the Link Centre or call the registration freephone 0800 731 7316.

Swimmers can enter as individuals or as a relay team of five. They set themselves a target distance to swim of 1,500 m, 2,500 m or 5,000m.

The entry fee is: individuals £6.50 (£3.50 conc.), team of two £12 (£7 conc.) and £15 (£10.50 conc.) for teams of 3, 4 or 5. Swimmers are also encouraged to raise sponsorship. Prize gifts of increasing value are awarded to those raising more than £25.

If you do not wish to complete the distance challenge but want to take part, you can 'Simply Swim' for an entry fee of £3.00.

Grange Park three run for Rett Syndrome Mandy Jenkins, 37, of Grange Park, is looking for sponsorship for her bid to complete the Bath Half Marathon, which she is running in support of Fulcrum, helping the Rett Syndrome Association UK. Mandy, who recently qualified as an aerobics instructor holds her own Diamond Aerobics exercise classes in Freshbrook every week.

Last year she ran in a 10K race to raise £100 for Swindon Animal Sanctuary. Now she has her sights set on the half marathon.

"I feel I want to be fit enough to run a half marathon as I approach 40 and prove that anyone can do it," she said. "At the same time, it is an excellent way of raising money for a good cause."

Middleleaze couple fix up Millennium wedding day Sarah Hiett has finally told her long ti me partner Robert Ponting that they can get married and she's chosen 1 January 2000 to tie the knot.

The couple have been together for over seven years and have three daughters, but Sarah has always rebuffed Robert's proposals. "He's asked me about six times, but I was never sure he was being serious," said Sarah. "He asked me again before Christmas, and I had been thinking about accepting next time he asked. I said let me think about it, and then went down to the Swindon registry office to see if we could get married on 1 January 2000.

"Robert was just a bit shocked when he came home and I showed him the booking slip."

HGV driver Robert agreed that he was taken aback. "Sarah had mentioned that she wanted to get married in the next century, but you could have knocked me off my feet that she had booked it."

Going through the formalities is one thing, finding a place to have a celebration is another. Many wedding reception venues will not be open, and those that will be are quoting astronomical prices because staff will need to be paid to come in after the mega party the night before.

Mum across a generation gap Denise Hofgartner, who lives in West Swindon, is experiencing motherhood a second time around. She now has a teenager and a toddler.

Here she describes the changes in attitude, over the years, towards motherhood and the development of facilities for parents.

"Deuce, deuce!"It's2.14am! The shouts shatter my momentary sleep. Max, my two year old son, wants his juice.

The thoughts of 'whose idea was this?' are long gone. At 1.40pm on 27 December 1996, I had a son.

To keep his sister company? No. She will be 18 in April and is about to join the R.A.F. There is a 15 year age gap between them, a second family and the best contraceptive you could give a teenager!

What a difference a generation makes. I recall recently sitting in a superstore baby changing room and feeling very secure in the knowledge that it was there. I remember queuing up in good old McIlroy's loo in 1981 feeling very inferior as there was nowhere else to do such things.

Indeed it was a nightmare going into town with a toddler,as there were no child friendly places, let alone the luxury of equipped, sometimes stocked, baby change units for Dads as well as for Mum. Whilst recently in one of these rooms, I had a conversation with another mother. She could see that I was an 'older Mum' and was gobb-smacked to learn the gap between my two children.

"I'm only having this one," she said. "I go back to work next week.

I've got him into a child care centre; they take them from 7.30am to 6pm. When do you go back?," she asked.

"This time I'm not," was my reply. "I had to work with my first and want to stay at home until Max goes to school, or perhaps do some part time work next year."

I immediately noticed the difference in attitude. She was obviously bemused as to why I should want to stay at home out of choice.

I remember being made to feel very guilty at going back to work with such a young child. Kirsty

was only five weeks old when I returned to work in 1981. It was necessary to pay the mortgage, bills, etc; my husband was out of work and I had no choice, if we wanted to keep our home.

Now, itseems, it is expected that you should 'go back' when there is someone very able to look after your offspring. Of course, as with my self in those early days, there are many working mums who would love to stay at home with their children, but have to work.

It's the attitude that has changed.

It's quite nice to have a 'blue for dishes, washing etc,etc,.

My own attitude to motherhood has also changed, in as much as I' m more confident and relaxed about the whole thing. The fact that Max is a 'night-owl' just like his sister,and indeed myself as a child, does not worry me. I know he'll grow out of it ......eventually.

I have taken advice from the good woman at West Swindon Health Centre - Tracy Gingall who runs the sleep clinic there.

This was something new to me and it has been a great help to know you are not the only one or that you have got it wrong.

Same with their eating, they will eat, they won't eat. They'll eat their meals when they are hungry. But at 23,1 thought it was me,not baby, that was doing something wrong!

Now, I know that it's baby; and I am God and do all that is right.

Another free New College 'Return to Learn' course starts at the Family Project at 15 Gainsborough Way, Freshbrook on 8 February and runs for six hours a week for 10 weeks.

Many people are reluctant to return to studying. There are often a number of reasons, such as fear, meeting strangers, feeling inadequate because of lack of qualifications, feeling too old to learn, or child care difficulties for preschoolers or after school.

However this course is designed to solve many of these problems.

Adult Education is not like school. You are recognised and respected as adults who have knowledge of life that is not necessarily academic. The tutors are there to guide and encourage you to achieve what you want to. There is no pressure, but a recognised qualification is achievable.

Divided into three sessions: English, Life Skills and Information Technology, the times are arranged around school, or a free creche is available on the premises.

Hard working school with committed staff Ofsted Inspectors have found Shaw Ridge Primary School to be a happy, friendly, hardworking community with high standards.

Teaching was judged to be satisfactory or better in 93% of lessons, with above average attainment in maths, English and science.

Excellent community links and extra-curricular provision were also praised, so was the management of the school, which provides 'sound value for money'.

"The school can be justifiably proud of its achievements," says chair of governors Moira Webster.

"The strong leadership of headteacher Keith Burke and the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff have combined to make it successful. Children enjoy coming to school and work with confidence, while parents feel welcome and at

ease when visiting."

The school will be working to raise its standards in information technology, art and music and improve daily planning. It will also be reviewing the organisation of classes and year groups and its Equal Opportunities Policy.

Keith Burke is delighted with the positive report. "This reflects the hard work and commitment of all the staff at the school," he said.

"With the additional resources promised by the Government for Information and Communication Technology, the school will now move forward into the 21st Century, delivering a truly broad and balanced education."

Investor reward Greendown in Grange Park is the first Swindon Education Authority school to receive the Investor in People Award.

Headteacher Ian Matthews said the award has been made in recog nition of the way staff are managed and developed to achieve the school aim of providing the best possible education for children in the area.

To achieve the exacting standards, all management systems were closely examined and staff were rigorously interviewed The school will be inspected annually to ensure that requirements of the award are being maintained.

Don the wellies, dig out the spade and get along to the new Shaw Tip woodland in West Swindon to plant a tree for free.

There are 5,000 waiting to add to the many already planted on what will become the town's new country park.

There's a chance to dedicate the tree you plant in the name of a loved one. A record will be kept for reference by event organisers, the Great Western Community team.

To make the day really fun in the mud, there will be performances of Romeo and Juliet, children's workshops, live music, musical instrument making and exhibitions about the community forest, the nearby Wilts and Berks Canal and other local environmental groups.

The last tree plant at Shaw Tip in February 1995 attracted 6,000 people. If you attended, you will be able to see how the trees planted on that day are growing.

This year help is also needed to scatter wild flower seeds.

Hot refreshments and toilets will be available on site. Walk or cycle if you can. Car parking is available at Hillmead Industrial Estate.

The Debate of the Age challenges us all to think about this dramatic shift in our age profile. Swindon is no different from the rest of the country. With marriage less likely to last a lifetime and more people used to an independent lifestyle, what support networks will we need to look after us in later life, with longer and hopefully healthier years of 'retirement'?

Will we be able to support ourselves financially as the basic state retirement pension is augmented by new, second pensions? What kind of homes and environment do we want for an ageing society?

Will operations on the NHS for non-life threatening illnesses still be free? Should we be allowed to decide for ourselves how and when we die?

Age Concern is co-ordinating the Debate all over the UK, encouraging participation of all ages, backgrounds and experience, gathering views through conferences and questionnaires, debates and discussions.

Using mateI specially prepared to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, Judith Cranswick will be running workshops and speaking at assemblies, enabling tomorrow's older people make their contribution today.

Community project gets lottery cash to buy house A £99,000 grant from the National Lotte ry is enabling West Swindon Family & Communi ty Project to take another step towards local control.

Management of the project was handed over to the community by NCH Action for Children in 1994. Thanks to the lottery, the project will now be able to buy its premises, a four-bedroomed family house in Freshbrook, from NCH. Project Worker Allyson Cardis says, "now that the house is going to be owned by the community it can be even more responsive to the needs of that community." However, due to cuts in funding from Swindon Borough Council, they are still operating on a £5,000 budget deficit.

The Family Project offers support to people in West Swindon, particularly children and families. It is open to anyone, whatever their circumstances. Some people come for help coping with family stress, others because they feel isolated and want to meet people. Specific activities and courses also attract new members. So do the various volunteering opportunities, including management committee membership, advice point work and skill sharing.

Co-ordinator Mark Thomas said, "what we are doing is a kind of multi-disciplinary community work. We operate across the boundaries of health, education and social services to help local people, both individually and together, to develop skills and knowledge, make choices and take action."

Behind the excitement of moving into a new home can be the fear of living away from friends and family. This can cause tension and worry. Abbey Meads is an affluent area but residents, especially thosewithyoungchildren,arestill affected by everyday problems, which can seem to intensify without a friend to talk to.

From early March an Information Exchange staffed by the NSPCC's support team will be run in the temporary community centre, off Elstree Way every Tuesday from 1pm to 2.30pm.

Angela has been liaising with the staff at the West Swindon Family Project to help assess the potential needs of families new to a large housing development. "We would like to be client led where appropriate; it is important that we get feedback on what would be helpful or of interest to our visitors."

A King's pardon for a `barbarous and bloody murder' Few people know that the St Johns of Lydiard Park were involved in a notorious murder in the 17th Century but an ancient document recently displayed in the State bedroom at Lydiard House is proof of a bloody deed, writes Sarah Finch Crisp.
