Wine & Dine on Valentine's Swindon's newest park at Shaw Tip is ready for tree planting and readers are invited to Day. Turn to make a start at a grand, free Chinese New Year celebration tree plant on Sundays February pages 16 and 18 to book your table. The event organised by the Great
Plant a tree for Chinese New Year
Western Community Forest team will feature lion dancers from the London based Chinese cultural centre, Chinese fortune telling, kite making and a silk banner workshop. The Swindon Chinese community will be offering visitors a 'Taste of the Orient' where they will be serving delicious Chinese food at a modest cost. There will also be English food on offer, as well as soup to warm up the February weather. Some of the entertainment and displays will take place inside a large marquee on the site. Community Forest promotions officer Julia Castle said children will be encouraged to think about the long term development of the park through environmental games and activities. "The Chinesc New Year launch is an ideal way to bring good luck to this new park, but it will be 50 years before the scheme is fully planted and reaching maturity - when the children of today will be adults. "It's a tremendous opportunity for people of all ages to help launch a project for the future. We have 6,000 trees to be planted, but we will only be covering about three acres."
Keen fan's best bid for football
Lawrence Lee, proprietor of the Chinese Experience restaurant at Sparcells preparing for Chinese New Year with Julia Castle and Landscape Architect Matthew Hawkins of the Great Western Community Forest "Bring the family, from the youngest to the oldest. We need to get all the trees planted and we need everybody to help out. It's completely free. Qualified foresters will provide expert advice and all materials will be provided. Bring a spade if you can and don't forget your wellington boots." The Chinese New Year plant-in will open at lOam on 5 February with the painting of the eyes of the lion, to bring him alive and bring
good luck to all, and will go on until 4pm. The Shaw Tip park will be found on Mead Way between the Renault Building and Sparcells. Car parking will be available at the Hiimead Business Park, but there will be closer parking for people with disabilities, plus volunteers to help push wheelchairs. For more information call the Great Western Community Forest team on 493553.
